AQ10001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.11/18/2010Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened.

The vehicle is equipped with a gear driven power liftgate that opens and closes the rear hatch at the touch of a button. i approached the rear hatch of the acadia to load groceries, and signaled it to open. the hatch powered open normally to its full height. i walked underneath it. with no warning, the hatch suddenly fell and struck me in the head / back of neck / shoulder area. it hit hard enough to cause serious injury.

My air conditioning has never been cool on my vehicle, especially in extremely hot weather. i took it in to the dealership several times with the result being there is nothing wrong with it. finally on the 4th of july it stopped working completely. it was blowing hot air. we took it to the dealership again and they said that the compressor had been failing for some time. metal shavings had come off and clogged the condensor and filter. the dealership replaced the compressor and the condensor. the air conditioning still is not really cold, but at least it isn't hot.

Power liftgate strut broke or malfunctioned while i was removing items from the trunk. the heavy trunk lid dropped about 18 inches, hit my back and then started to automatically close on my back and head. when the trunk lid hit my body, it still tried close with the power function even though there as an obstruction. i was able to squeeze under the closing lid and escaped injury. i am very concerned that if a child or elderly person were removing items from the trunk that they would have been injured. there are numerous posts on the internet about acadia liftgate problems.

The battery has died three different times after being driven the night prior. i have taken it into the shop once where they said nothing was wrong, but the battery was low, they charged it. the second time (a week later) i was told the battery could not keep a charge so they gave me a new one. now three months later, it dies again. waiting to hear what they are going to do now. i can't imagine a car that is a year old can go through two batteries, needing a third.
