EA04011 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 04/09/2004 | 05/10/2005 | PARKING BRAKE FAILURE | 05V161000
In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. a total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed. for additional information, see the attached closing report.
PE03057 | GENERAL MOTORS CORP. | 12/08/2003 | 04/09/2004 | PARKING BRAKE FAILURE
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

Cold weather stalling while turning. when the outside temp. is below ten degrees, the engine completely stops while executing a low speed hard right or left turn (such as entering a driveway from the roadway). this has happened twice-once in dec, 2000 and most recently in jan, 2003 (the only times the temp has been below ten degrees since i purchased the vehicle as new). no mil lamps illuminate nor do the gauges indicate a problem before or after the incident. fuel tank was half full during the most recent incident.

Fuel gauge often reads empty when tank is completely full or at some position midway between full and empty. i have no way of knowing for sure what the actual level of fuel is because the gage jumps over the full range of positions while driving. other friends tell me they experience the same problem with the fuel gauge.*ak

At 50,547 miles on 6/23/2008, my 2000 sierra developed a brake line rupture in a rear brake line and i experienced sudden decreased braking. no accidents or injury occurred. at about 56,000 miles on 4/5/2010 at least one line to the front brakes blew out and we stopped 3 feet from a business front window. no contact or injuries occurred. my truck is currently being repaired at don's auto alignment, inc., 2611 eaton rapids rd., lansing mi, 48911. phone number 517-393-0372. first invoice 21200 for $215.19. next invoice will be about $800 since have chosen to replace all lines out of fear for others failing. my mechanic claims he is using higher rated replacement part than original parts.

Dt: the contact owns a 2000 gmc 1500 super cab. the contact complained about brake problem problems a couple of weeks ago. on 10-13-05 it started getting real bad. when coming to a complete stop the pedal pulsated, and then got very hard, and would not move. this happens only at low speeds, and when coming to a stop. on 10-13-05 goodyear replaced both rear rotors and put new brake pads on the rear. the dealer pulled up recall 00v0550000 and told the contact that if the recall had nhtsa on it he would have to pay for the repairs. in addition, told him that this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin, and that if the recall did not have gm on it he could not fix it under the recall. the contact has not yet spoken to the manufacturer.*ak

Gm recall no. 05068 is limited to certain states. my vehicle is one of those listed in the vin range, but i now live in wisconsin, i have not been notified. the truck has the problem and up until july of this year had a michigan title. by allowing gm to limit the recall to certain states people like me fall through the cracks and might be harmed. i am unemployed and cannot afford to pay for the fix outright. *jb
