Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, a fuel filter fitting can become disconnected. if this were to occur while attempting to start the engine, a no-start condition would result and fuel would be pumped out the fuel filter onto the ground.
Consequence SummaryIf the fitting becomes disconnected while the vehicle is in motion, the engine would stop due to inadequate fuel supply and cause a loss of power steering assist. if an ignition source were present, fuel leakage from a disconnected fuel filter fitting could result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel filter quick connect retainers. owner notification began september 20, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020. gmc at 1-800-462-8782, or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.

EA07009GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/10/200708/28/2008FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.

Odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle.gm states, the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak.corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment.odi has upgraded this pe to engineering analysis (ea07-009) to further assess this issue.

2002 gmc envoy - continue to experience fuel smell condition. had vehicle serviced in 2009 for this issue. dealer repaired per recall, never notified of this issue, a fuel filler neck issue that allowed vapors to escape. problem has resurfaced and it is suspect that issue is fuel tank related. issue is difficult to identify without sizable expense. not sure now is issue is repeat of repaired condition or fuel tank problem. this is a serious issue with warning about fuel vapors and concern about fire and explosions in around gas stations yet this know condition is allowed to exist on these gm vehicles without a safety recall.

Gas smell both in and out of vehicle. within a couple of days gas would leak after car was driven. fuel pump leaked due to rusted pipe on fuel pump to fuel line. it is the only exposed steel fitting and sits on top of the gas tank where water and moisture can collect, which is then conducive to rusting. *tr

2002 gmc envoy fuel smell. took to 2 different gm dealers before problem was found. the 2nd gm dealer found it to be the fuel pump module which was rusted and leaking gas. gm would not stand behind this problem as she was the second owner. the problem is the way metal fuel pump module sits in the recessed portion middle of the plastic fuel tank invites moisture, rust , salt, corrosion etc. replaced at our expense of $520.00 this is a design problem. *jb

Was driving at 65 mph on highway. depressed accelerator and vehicle did not accelerate. went to pull over and noticed there was no power steering or power brakes. motor had stalled. the vehicle behind me nearly collided with me as i could not maintain speed and i had to swerve amongst traffic to get to break down lane. tried to re-start in breakdown lane and incident repeated within 100 yds. vehicle was towed to gmc dealer for service. dealer had vehicle fail at least 3 times on roadway under same conditions over a period of 4 days. dealer diagnosed failure of fuel pump module (pump, sensor, filter). parts are being replaced today. after an internet search, i learned this is a common issue with this model vehicle. should be a recall or preventive maintenance bulletin. *nm

We purchased new vehicle october 2001 and within 4 months began experiencing problems beginning with a noise within the steering wheel. dealer technician replaced defective airbag module. the next month, my new envoy has been to the dealer 4 times for the same problem of 1) wind and/or whistling noise at speeds above 45mph, 2) vibration noise coming from transmission when vehicle reaches 3rd gear , 3) when vehicle has reached 3rd gear and previous noise begins, there is also a vibration felt in the acceleration pedal. on the first trip to dealer for these problems, technician only agreed with the wind noise. discovered the front side mirrors were the cause. replaced both mirrors---problem still exists, however, he can't hear them. explained it was the nature of the vehicle. he also repaired the weatherstripping which had fallen off the right rear door. he advised that he did not hear any noise in the transmission area or in the gas pedal. we took to another dealer who had a technician test drive the vehicle and advised that there was both a noise in the area of transmission and a vibration in the gas pedal. returned to the dealer who originally was doing repair work and had him ride with me. at this time, he heard the noise i was complaining about and advised that it was coming from the heat shield at the catalytic converter. made an appointment for repairs, picked up the vehicle and later the same day, the noise returned. took vehicle back, technician said he didn't hear any more noises. waited 2 weeks, made another appointment to return vehicle for right rear door rattling , and heat shield noise which had become non stop. at this time, they replaced the weatherstripping on the door and again adjusted heat shield by making a cushion so that it would not vibrate against the exhaust manifold. this did not resolve the problem, as it still vibrates so as i can still feel stress through the gas pedal on the transmission when reaching speed.*

When attempting to fill the fuel tank, gasoline will spill out the top of the tank (not the filler hose) and onto the ground. rather than return up the hose and indicate to the pump that the tank is full, the gasoline goes everywhere. if you just add gas but do not fill the tank, this does not happen.*ak

The electrical computer memory for the exterior mirrors and the seat adjuster failed. this caused the seats for driver and passenger side not to be adjusted. also the mirrors are not able to be adjusted. driver has to continously adjust the miirrors in order to see. dealer reset memory seats, reprogrammed mirror memory, and replaced left and right front seat modules. did not remedy problem. customer states that there is a fuel leak loss of 1/2 tank in 3 miles. dealer repaired loose connection between main fuel line and the fuel tank. *tt

2002 gmc envoy began to emit overwhelming odors. the interior of the car and exterior of the car smells strongly of leaking fuel. the vehicle must be parked in my driveway to prevent vapors from accumulating in my garage and seeping into my home. the leaking odors into the garage and house have caused me to have severe headaches. the captured vapors in my garage presented a severe fire hazard. i took my vehicle to a local mechanic who reported to me that the fuel pump assembly on top of the fuel tank was leaking due to corrosion on several of the tubes that transport fuel. he stated this is avery common problem on the gmc envoys and that he has repaired many of them for the same problem. *tr
