DP10001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/07/2010ALLEGED FUEL TANK LEVEL SENSOR FAILURE
Mr. billy hayes of old hickory, tn, petitioned the agency in a letter dated november 27, 2009. the petitioner requests that nhtsa open an investigation into the performance/reliability of the fuel level sensor installed in model year 2005 chevrolet trailblazer vehicles. the petitioner alleges that the fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in a subject vehicle running out of fuel, stall, and being rear ended by another vehicle.odi will evaluate the petition for a grant or deny decision.

The office of defects investigation has received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving in model year 2005-07 chevrolet trailblazer, gmc envoy, buick rainier, and saab 9-7x vehicles.of the 668 complaints, 58 incidents were alleged to result in a vehicle stall.of the 58 stalling incidents, 43 complaints reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than what is actually in the fuel tank. one complaint alleged a vehicle crash after the vehicle stalled while exiting the interstate, became disabled, and was struck from behind.summarily, the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most complaints received within the past year.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

Fuel gauge stays on empty after filling the gas tank. it may alternate from full to empty intermittently.

About three months ago the fuel gauge, after filling the tank, would read empty for a period of time. then the gauge would read full, then it would go back to empty. this would continue for a short period of time and eventually the correct (i assumed) level would be shown until the next fill up. as time has passed, it takes longer for the gauge to finally settle down and read normally. i have now received a letter from gmc stating they are aware of the problem and will pay for half the repair cost. my question is that if this is a premature failure, as the letter states, why gmc is not responsible for 100% of the cost. the letter also states that the fuel level shown may read more than the actual level. could lead to running out of fuel on the interstate, getting in an accident trying to get off the road, and/or injector damage.

I bought a use 2006 gmc envoy denali with 69,000 mile in june 2010, by july i was replacing the air shocks on the right side of the vechicle. on about 7/28/2011 on the beltway where the speed limit is 65 i was in the far left lane approaching a left hand exit when my car staled, i had run out of gas with no indication. i wait over a hour for someone to come put gas in my truck at about 100 degree tempature. i later ran out of gas on a back road coming to my house at night. again no indicator light came on to let me know i was low on gas. not the gas gauge floats between fuel and empty contionusly. this was a very dangeous and scary situation both times. i flasher were on the whole time and i had to change the battery. now the air will not come out of the vents only the floor and defrost. but the most important thing is the gas gauge, i could have me involved in an accident both time.

2006 envoy denali. consumer writes states gas needle stopped functioning *tgw the consumer stated the gas needle began to fluctuate in the beginning and since that time, the needle has been stuck on empty, and the engine light illuminated as a result. in march of 2009, when the consumer stared the vehicle, it sounded as if there was something metal tumbling around under the hood. upon inspection of the vehicle, it was determined the engine needed to be replaced. on june 10, 2010, the vehicle would not start and had to be towed to the dealer. an inspection revealed a starter was needed. also, an alignment was done and the rear brake light was replaced. on june 12, 2010, the vehicle would not come out of park. after 25 minutes and over 50 attempts, it finally came out of park. the consumer drove to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. september 2010, the consumer noticed the rear of the truck was sitting very low. the rear end air suspension needed to be replaced. the air condition randomly worked. there were times where the air would just start blowing and no buttons were pushed. also, the defroster stopped working. the consumer continued to experience problems with the vehicle not coming out of park. *jb

Fuel sensor failure in the gas tank. causing the fuel tank to read empty when full, causing the suv to stall when the tank is full, causing the check engine light to come one. this is a safety issue.

Fuel gauge is not working properly on my vehicle. it stays on e when there is plenty of gasoline in the car. there have been several complaints about this that i have seen on websites. ocassionally the gauge willl move up but then go back to e. i went to dealer and they said it is a bad fuel senor guage which is in the gasoline tank. seems like this is a common issue and could cause other problems. the fuel gauge has been like that for over 6 months, as the cost was astronomical and i believe there should be a recall. additionally, recently my oil pressure gauge has shown the max amount and then last night it went down to the lowest amount on the instrument panel. it goes back and forth from high to low and the oil pressure low light comes on the instrument panel and then goes off. it says to stop engine. there does not appear to be anything physically wrong with my engine and i will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow to confirm that. i believe both of these issues are caused by a faulty instrument panel or electrical system included in gm's models. i have a family member with an older gmc suv with similar issues and they also had issues with a gmc truck they used to have but got rid of it, due to the malfunctions. seems like a very common issue that should be resolved by ge.

The problem is with my 2006 gmc envoy denali edition. about january 1, 2011 i received gas at a shell gas station. after receiving fuel the fuel gauge remained at e and did not g to f signaling a fuel tank. every time i refill the tank the gas needle swings back and forth between f and e. around half a tank the needle drops to e. the fuel gauge is not reading accurately and has caused the truck to stall once while driving. the check engine light is constantly on. i have not done any repairs because i've been told the fuel assembly has to be replaced which is a costly repair. to prevent the truck from running out of gas while driving i've been monitoring the trip meter and going by the gas mileage.

Gas gauge and fuel sensor stopped working, two estimates to repair of $800.00. this is an extreme safety issue not knowing how much fuel is in your tank.

I have a 06 envoy denali it started with the check engine light being on, i was told by a mechanic that it needs to be reprogramed which worked until i drove a few miles then came on again.. then my fuel indicator stop working stays on e when i fuel up. now the other day i lost power in my gas peddle(read low pressure) then the car died. it started up but didn't have enough power in the peddle. waiting for mechanic to look at it.

I have a 2006 envoy denali with 53000 miles, about 4 weeks ago, i was filing up with gas, i always fill up at 1/2 tank since i purchased it in 06. after filling the gas gage went to empty, and then would go to full, then back to empty. it did this for about 5 min and then went to empty. now the gage do not read correctly at all, i use the trip to keep track of my milage as the remaining miles fuel gage does not register either.....

Fuel level sensor failed at just over 52,000. miles. from my research this seems to be a reoccuring problem with many 2006 gmc or chevrolet vehicles from the same year range 2005 to 2006. the recommendation from the dealership was if you don't want to pay the $500.00 plus repair estimate, just do what many other people are doing and reset your trip meter at every fill up. look to re-fuel between 250 and 300 miles. in my research i discovered a person whose vehicle did the same exact thing. he was using the trip meter as the guage and even with fuel in the vehicle, he was left stranded in an interstate due to an entire fuel system failure. should this happen to a family during inclement weather there could be serious safety situations. in light of the fact that the vehicle that we own was priced at $38,000.00 plus msrp,i would expect that the fuel sending unit would perform beyond the 50,000 mile range. i'm sure, by now, that your organization has heard from other gm owners about this same situation. i am interested in your response.
