Gm states that some brake/tail lamp bulbs can prematurely become inoperative due to malfunctioning brake/tail lamp sockets.on march 2, 2004, gm initiated a 6-year/72,000 mile special policy for 989,487 subject vehicles to inspect and replace the rear brake/tail lamp bulb socket assemblies.on april 4, 2004, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe04-032) based on consumer complaints alleging brake lights not operating when the brake pedal is depressed.on august 3, 2004 odi upgraded pe04-032 to an engineering analysis (ea04-021).by letter dated october 27, 2004 gm notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa # 04v527) covering subject vehicles that were not already repaired under gm's special policy.my 2004 subject vehicles built after august 8, 2003 contain improved brake lamp assemblies and are not included in the recall.gm dealers will install the improved brake lamp assembly on subject vehicles built on august 8, 2003 and earlier.the action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 gmc envoy xl. the contact stated that he has been experiencing the same failures as noted in recall # 03v096000 (electrical system: wiring: interior/under dash). he has taken the vehicle to the dealer, but the failure still persists. the contact stated that the seat belts continue to lock and the windshield wipers are malfunctioning. the wipers have been replaced numerous times and the failure causes limited visibility in certain weather conditions. the suspension for the arms of the ball joints was replaced and the vehicle continues to shake, shimmer, and make a loud noise. the vehicle was repaired, but the failures are ongoing. when turning, the steering wheel hesitates and causes the vehicle to jerk uncontrollably. when the windows are down, the interior lights dim due to an electrical short. the tires were changed four times, but continued to fail. the contact stated that the brakes have been replaced repeatedly. the dealer stated that the discs were failing due to adverse weather conditions. the current mileage is 68,000 and failure mileage was 38,000. updated 1/15/09 *cn the catalytic converter, the camshaft, and engine coil was replaced. the check engine light is still on. updated 01/21/09

My rear high mount stop lamp attached to the lift gate window has became detached yesterday on it's own. it seems that it's fastening holding it down had loosened and broke. it is now hanging from it's wiring and needs to be replaced, rewired, and mounted. i believe this is similar to nhtsa campaign number: 04v527000, where vibration and heat from normal driving use played a factor in uncovering another defect in the exterior lighting:brake lights. *jb

On our 2002 gmc envoy, when driving in heavy fog or any type of falling snow the headlights shoot a beam of light straight up. it looks like what the searchlights look like in old war movies. the reflection from the light on he fog or snow really messes up the drivers vision because it effectivly blocks the sight of anything past the hood. we talked to the dealer about it and the service manager said that we weren't the first to compalin but until gm did a recall, he couldn't do anything about it.
