FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - DELIVERY - FUEL PUMP
EA07009GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/10/200708/28/2008FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.
PE07013GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/12/200707/10/2007FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
Odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle.gm states, the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak.corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment.odi has upgraded this pe to engineering analysis (ea07-009) to further assess this issue.

PE04001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/05/200405/07/2004FUEL SPILLAGE DURING REFUELING
This investigation was opened on the model year (my) 2003 chevrolet trailblazer.based on gm's information request (ir) response, odi added to its analysis the my 2003 gmc envoy and oldsmobile bravada vehicles.these vehicles share the same vehicle platform (gm 360/370) and fuel fill components.incident summary numbers reported above include these vehicles.epa regulates the fuel dispensing rates at filling stations and gm states that the reports of spitback for the subject vehicles are principally caused by fuel dispensing pumps exceeding the rate specified by epa.odi finds that the rate of complaints, field reports and warranty is low compared to other vehicles that have been recalled for a spitback issue.a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of the agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached report for additional information.

(2003 gmc envoy xl) i have recently found that my wife and kids have been riding around in a vehicle that was an explosion waiting to happen. general motors has extended their warranty on fuel tank issues 3 times because of a flawed design. i had no knowledge of this before purchasing, as i believe i am the second owner of this vehicle. i have since seen that this issue has been brought to your attention but not to the magnitude to which it is occurring. i wounder if someone has to die a fiery death before this issue is addressed seriously ? i have compiled many accounts of customers complaining of this issue and have records to share. i have contacted gm customer support, only to be put on hold for a total of 153 minutes in the realm of 4 calls with no resolution. this engineering failure consist of great numbers still on the road. unlucky ones like myself will not have any knowledge of this until total failure occurs and at that time gm's poor design becomes the burden of the current owner. i need help understanding how such a safety risk can be swept under the rug with 493,579 of these vehicles being sold. i have found that the design was so bad that aftermarket suppliers do not even offer this tank. the only place to get one is from gm dealer at a price of $650.00, which is exorbitant for a piece of plastic. i need help with this matter but it's not just about me, your actions could save someones lives !

I have a 2003 gmc envoy. from the beginning i've had problems with the electrical working propertly (rearview mirrors, seat controls, etc). also, my fuel indicator and speedometer both went out at the same time. i believe gmc should take responsiblity for the default and request a recall. i have read numerous complaints dealing with the very same issues on models from 2003 thru 2011.

I have a 2003 gmc envoy that has the fuel guage issue as well. for years i always have to make sure i have gas in the tank because i really never know how much gas a have. i can but $30 or $40 in gas in my tank and my guage will read whatever it wants. it has shown that i have gas and i have ran out twice while driving. it is scary with two children in the car. i've seen that this is a major problem in other envoys particularly 2005 and up, but also see there are internet posts on complaints reguarding 2003 models as well.

I have a 2003 gmc envoy that started smelling like gas. i took it to the dealer and they stated the filler tube and fuel assembly was under warranty. however the costly fuel tank was not. how can you have an item directly related to corrosion that caused the tank problem in the first place not be reimbursable. i am very dissapointed in gm to allow customers to ride around with such a dangerous vehicle. safety in not important to them.

I have a 2003 gmc envoy and there is a gas leak. i bought it in october 2006. in 2007, i took it to a gmc dealership for the check engine light, they said that it was probably caused by my not tightening the gas cap. since then, i have had problems with pumping gas into tank, problems with a gas smell when the tank is filled or if i go over a bump. now, there is reduced power. husband says it is on fuel filler neck. on several web pages, it says there was a recall only i am unable to find any information on it. a lot of people have had this problem, why has it not been recalled? i can't afford another vehicle and what happens if i get in a crash. we have 5 kids that i drive around. *tr

Vehicle having the service engine soon light on and off for like a couple of weeks and then it came light on steady for a while and smell gas around it sometimes until i brought it for service at the dealership where i bought the vehicle. after some diagnostic they found trouble code p0442 evaporative leak detected. they performed evap leak with smoke detector but did not find any leak. service tech found a leak around a metal seal at the upper part of the fuel tank. *tr

The gas tank on my 2003 gmc envoy xlt (80k miles) is leaking, especially when tank is full. there was a small puddle on the driveway. the problem actually started back around 50k miles with engine light on. i have taken it to dealer and mechanics before, but it was thought to be some sort of fuel cap problem or over sensitive sensors. however, today, because my gas tank was full, the dealer found that there are leaks caused by a crack tank and fuel tank neck. the fuel leak and vapor are so strong that i feared a small spark can set the whole vehicle on fire like a roman candle. car was used for everyday commute only. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 gmc envoy. after the contact placed fuel in his vehicle, he continued to smell an odor of gasoline. he crawled underneath the vehicle and noticed fuel leaking on the outside of the gas tank. the gas tank weld was rusted and cracked, causing fuel to leak out of the tank. the contact also stated that the front suspension of the vehicle was banging whenever he drove over the smallest bump. in addition, the fan clutch was making a clicking sound. the dealer informed him that the vehicle was out of warranty and the repairs were his responsibility. the current and failure mileages were 88,000.

8/7/08 found on your web site nhtsa action #: pe07014; which states gm will expand its special policy to address the fuel tank inlet check valve fractures on certain model year gmc envoy xl and they will provide free repair of the fuel tank. it also states that gm would be sending letters to owners beginning in june of 2007 regarding this special policy. i did not receive such a letter. i contacted gm today at 866-996-9463 regarding this special policy, and this is the answer i received. since i was not granted such a letter, and gm did not include my vin # as part of a selected vin# mailing for this recall, i am not eligible for reimbursement of the monies spent to replace the gas tank. my complaint is this: my vehicle fits within the guidelines, meaning the make, model, year, and description of defect exactly matches that of what gm claims to be recalling, but since my vin # was not selected as part of the lot of vin # gm decided to send letters to, i am not eligible. that is not a acceptable reason for not reimbursing my expenses. *tr

Took my 2003 gmc envoy to my local garage because the clutch fan would not shut off. mechanic asked about the strong smell of fuel, and i said i was aware the tank needed to be replaced due to a crack where the fill tube goes into the tank. the mechanic said both are important to fix, but the fuel leak could be a deadly situation, and he would suggest tackling that defect first, but in order for car to run normal had to have clutch fan replaced too. total cost for tank related replacement: $1,058.04. total cost for clutch fan replacement: $719.50 total cost for taxes: $72.75. why haven't these well known defects been addressed in a recall. these are not inexpensive repairs we are talking about here, not to mention the potentially deadly consequences gmc is subjecting their consumers to. *tr

I have a 2003 gmc envoy. lately i have smelt gas when outside and even inside the vehicle. after doing some research online, it appears that this is a common problem with these vehicles. this should be recalled with gm, this is a huge safety issue. since what makes gasoline explode is the vapors i would image that gm might have a death on their hands before long. *tr

2003 gmc envoy xl-- service engine light came on had vehicle checked. they decided the problem was a fuel cap. replaced with new cap and service engine light comes back on. take vehicle back and they check further and tell me i need a new gas tank. notice when parked on an incline gas is leaking from tank at the inlet from the filler neck. during investigation on internet i've noticed alot of people complaining of the same problem with fuel leaks. why no recall for fuel tank issues??? i haven't had the vehicle repaired yet because i was searching for possible recall. i'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow to see if they will cover this issue. if the vehicle is leaking fuel on an incline then i'm sure it has vapors escaping on level ground. *tr

There are various ongoing problems with the 2003 gmc envoy slt xl.*mr fuel flows out of the tank when pumping. the dealer had told the consumer to pump slowly, they replaced the emission canister vent solenoids, replaced the tank neck/hose and replaced the left tank. although these components have been replaced the problem still exist. the service manager came across a service bulletin that indicated there was a problem with the envoy like the consumer experienced. he stated he would order the filler upper pipe assembly and lower hose assembly. if this repair does not alleviate the problem the consumer request a refund or a replacement vehicle. *nm

The 2003 envoy we purchased gave us numerous problems, including a number of the ones other owners mentioned here, like the glass liftgate that does not operate properly, various electrical problems, but especially the outside rear view mirrors that move on their own no matter how many times they were supposedly fixed by service technicians. they do not stay in the position we set them in, and the fuel tank leaking is very dangerous as well as inhaling freon because of malfunctioning a/c system. why is gmc doing nothing to solve these problems? i can't understand how they are getting away with this seeing that so many owners are having the same problems. what do we have to do to get some help?*ak

I was stopped at a drive up atm and the check engine light came on. i called onstar and theyasked that i check the gas cap which i did. later that day while parked on a sloping driveway for an hour i found gasoline leaked and covered the driveway. the cause was a crack in the gas tank just below the filler neck. i was out of the state; my son's mechanic said that i can drive home as long as the tank is less than half full. no prior repair on the fuel tank or required its removal. i called gmc andwas told that there was no recall but the person (tracy) that i spoke to said that this has occured to a number of vehicles gmc envoy xl 2003. my dealer even stocks the fuel tanks for the vehicle.*ak

I have a fuel leak at the point where the fuel filler hose enters the fuel tank. i have researched this on the internet to find this is a very common problem with this vehicle. i feel that this is problem has the potential to cause fires and explosions. *tr

I took my vehicle in for service because it failed emission testing and the repair shop told me that they have seen several vehicles like mine with a similar problem. i found that your nhtsa action number pe07014 is the problem that the repair shop found. i understand that the investigation into this is still open. the repair shop told me to contact the gmc dealer because they felt that the dealer should stand behind the problem and it is a safety issue. will this become a recall issue and will the dealer need to replace the fuel tank at their expense? *jb

I have a 2003 gmc envoy xl. my check engine light came on. i had a mechanic hook his computer up to the vehicle. the code it gave was a bad gas cap. he replaced the gas cap and reset the computer. two weeks later the check engine light came back on. i also smelled gas after filling the gas tank and noticed gas on my garage floor. i am having the gas tank dropped and checked this weekend. i wonder how many others are having the same problem? *jb

When filling my gas tank, i have had a few issues with the pump shutting off too quickly as if the tank is full. however, i have also had the opposite at one particular gas station. each time i got to this particular station, the gas pump clicks off, but gas continues to flow and spills into the tank and all over the vehicle. this only happens with my gmc envoy and not any other family or friends' vehicles at the same gas station. it happens each and every time with the envoy so we have had to stop using that station for the envoy fill-ups. after seeing the many complaints about the cracked gas hose and issues with leaks, i wanted to make sure that someone knows there are a lot of problems with the gas tanks on the envoys. i am very concerned that the design of the gas tank and assembly is a faulty design and will result in injuries. *jb

Dt: the contact stated the gas tank on 2003 gmc envoy had a leak in it where the spout went into the tank. he noticed this when the service engine light came on. he took vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer replaced the gas tank. the contact felt gmc should pay the expenses. *ak *nm

I have a 2003 gmc envoy xl. my check engine light came on about 2-weeks ago. i took it into the dealer only to find out that my fuel tank had a leak. the dealer stated it was cracked at the filler neck at the tank. the tank had been leaking fuel and had to be replaced. in researching this on nhtsa, it appears that this has been happening to other consumers. *nm

My service engine light came on and then i started detecting a odor of gasoline. the order grew stronger and then i got the special notice, but not a recall about the corrosion in the fuel tank. when i took the car into the dealer, i was told that this was not the problem and that it was a crack at the filler pipe on the gas tank and that this was not covered. i asked what could cause this and they could not give me an answer. my car only has 49,000 miles and is in excellent shape, except for all the recall items. i believe that gmc should fix this problem, not only it is costly to fix, but it is very dangerous to be driving like this. and reading the complaints, it sounds like several others have the same issue. *tr
