Defect SummaryCertain sport utility vehicles have a rear side closure latch that may not latch or unlatch due to corrosion caused by road splash, such as water and road salt. these vehicles were originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia.
Consequence SummaryIf the door is not latched properly and it goes unnoticed, it may open while the vehicle is in motion. if an unbelted occupant fell out of the vehicle, personal injuries could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a seal along the lower part of the rocker panel to prevent intrusion of corrosive material, and inspect the rear side closure latches. functional latches will be cleaned and lubricated. non-functioning latches will be replaced. the recall began on february 24, 2006. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

I own a 2003 gmc envoy. the drivers side rear door latch has become inoperable. the door latches maybe 1 in 10 tries. i found a recall but they are telling me mine is not covered under this recall even though it is the exact problem an i am in one of the states that it covers.

In six years my 2003 envoy has had notthing but electrical issues. my lights are constanly being replaced. my head light wiring has shorted out and now the whole wiring connection needs replaced. the latest is an electrical system problem that is draining my battery and not allowing it to properly charge.

The rear driver door popped open and won't close. the fan clutch failed 2 weeks after i purchased the vehicle. i thought the transmission went out because it was winding really high and not driving normally. also the rear passenger doors on both sides have malfunctioned. the window on the passenger rear went out. i have not corrected the failures as of now. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated on 10-14-04 both rear door latches were replaced because the doors were failing to lock. in 2-06 the contact received a recall letter concerning the latches/locks and linkages; nhtsa recall # 05v494000. on 3-13-06 the dealership replaced the weather stripping around the rear doors and inspected the vehicle for corrosion on the latches. the dealership determined there was no corrosion on the latches. on 4-8-06 while driving at 40 mph, as the contact was making a right turn, the passenger side rear door flew open, causing extensive damage to the front passenger door and to the rear passenger door. both child safety locks were engaged at the time of the incident. the vehicle was towed to the dealership on 4-08-06.

Left rear door latch does not release 100% of the time, making it impossible to open door from outside. *nm

I have a 2003 gmc envoy xl. i have to constantly replace head lamp bulbs as they continuously burn out. i also have a problem with the turn signal. if i have the heat on, the signal won't blink - just lights up. i am using today's date although this has been going on since late november. i also had the problem with the back doors and had to replace the latch on one of the doors in september and i can feel it going on the other door as well. *jb

Faulty driver side seat belt that will not release to fasten. i have taken the car in and the repair person said that there was nothing wrong, and that it just was catching on something. also, the passenger side door behind the drivers seat was very hard to open the repair person at the same dealership broke the handle trying to open the door. the repair shop did fix the handle for free, however the door remains still very hard to open and i would not use this particular door. after a while the door would not close and the door latch had to be replaced at my expense. the back window would not go all the way up and the actuator had to be replaced also. i am not sure what month the first incidence took place, but everything seemed to happen quickly afterwards.*jb

While making a right turn out of parking lot, the back let door opened, even though it was locked. i was unable to close the door.

In four different cases on my 2003 gmc envoy the rear door latch mechanisms failed to work. in at least one case the left rear door failed to open from either the inside or the outside. the left rear door has stuck but never failed to open, although it is a fight to do so. the last time i returned the car they replaced the entire latch assembly on the right side, with the dealer telling me they have never had complaints. i found this to be untrue as conversations with many owners of the gmc envoy and chev. trailblazer have seen the same thing. my biggest concern is that in the case of an emergency if the rear doors don't work how do we get our children out of the car. *ak

Out back latch door, does not shut properly. you have to slam it, and it feels like it is going to break the glass. it seems like this should be a very big issue because if it fails to stay close like it sometimes does, it could be a very serious issue. *tr

Lift gate, upper molding cracked when opening back hatch window. poorly designed, contacted gmc basically my problem, even though local gmc dealer has to replace several over the last few years. also any vibration from the road causes the window and or gate to come unlatched while driving. spoke to gmc in regards to that and i also checked for recalls. we purchased this vehicle used in 2006 its a 2003 gmc 4x4 slt xl 8-5.3l. *tr

Rear hatch cover for 2003 gmc envoy xl, in winter climates, snow then ice collects and it can break, potentially come off going down the highway, could it cause an accident? hasn't happened yet, but they still have not changed the design, and according to former service writer at local dealership, they have repaired or replace several. first repair consists of using adhesive under hatch, doesn't last long. i consider it a design defect, that should be changed, again would only be a problem in winter climate areas. incident date is date schedule for replacement of part. *jb
