Letter from senator shelby on behalf of constituent regarding issues with general motors diesel exhaust fluid( def) system used in ems and fire service vehicles. *smd the consumer stated there are five ambulances in operation, all of which are general motors diesel chassis with module box patient compartments. in january 2010, government emissions regulations required engine manufacturers to incorporate a def diesel exhaust fluid system to reduce emissions from diesel engines. the system required the use of a urea based fluid that was added to an additional tank on the vehicle and the fluid was introduced into the exhaust system which caused a chemical reaction and reduced emissions. there were several issues that could have occurred with the system, including, but not limited to running out of fluid, poor fluid quality, and faulty fluid quality sensors. if the vehicle vehicle's computer detected an issue with the def system the vehicle may exhibit reduced engine power, reduced speed, or reduced torque. recently, one of the vehicle's lost speed, due to a faulty nox sensor in the emissions system that led to the vehicle speed being reduced to 55 mph.
