(1)no events leading to failure. (2)on numerous ocassions while braking the brakes made a buzzing sound and the pedal went to the floor, losing braking power. this problem has almost caused a few major accidents. i've researched and discovered there is a recall on my vehicle for this problem but gmc dealerships says there is not. (3) not fixed, dealership says there is nothing wrong.*ak

On 5/27/98, i was in a vehicle accident in which i rear ended another vehicle, which caused damage to both vehicles. the vehicle i hit was a total loss. at the time of the accident i was traveling approximately 40 mph and when i put on the brakes my vehicle slid three car lengths (leaving skid marks on the pavement) and stopped when i hit the car in front of me. the sliding was intense and the smoke so thick that i thought my vehicle engine was on fire. i felt at the time that the abs system had malfunctioned, and i mentioned this to the police officer at the scene. when i took the vehicle to the local gmc dealer for collision repairs, i asked them to check the brake system. they indicated that there were not any problems with the brakes. the reason i am filing this claim is because i am a very careful driver who has never been involved in a motor vehicle accident. up to this point in time i had a perfect driving record. the police record indicates that i told the police officer that i was unable to stop in time. this accident has tarnished my perfect driving record and as a result of this my insurance rates have increased. as a side note, i have had the dealer fix the 4 wheel drive switch (under warranty) on two occasions because the vehicle would not switch from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.

Driving north on hy 101 north of bay city , weather clear , road dry at 2:30 pm , new tires. p/u truck stopped dead in front of me to avoid an accident. i thought i had enough room to completly stop and applied my breaks with firm steady pressure but ran into the rear of the p/u. no damage to him but his trailer hitch and steel bumper damaged my front end. contacted local gmc dealer and he said the gmc recall on the abs did not pertain to my vehical. i feel that maybe it should.

I am having a problem with my anti-lock brake system. i have a 1996 gmc jimmy and any time that i apply brakes and there is a difference in road conditions (pavement to gravel) while applying brakes there is always an extended stopping distance and no control. we have pine needles that gather on the side of our small road, making small mounds. if i apply my brakes while going across these the car will not stop. it makes a pong sound a couple of times, then it will finally stop. luckily there has been no oncoming traffic. this has been happening every since i have had the vehicle. i have contacted a chevrolet dealer in the past and they informed me there was no recalls on vehicle. *jb

Front wheel speed sensors have now failed twice within a one year period. both failures occurred during winter. when the vehicle was parked the previous evening the abs system was apparently functioning, on both ocassions, when the vehicle was started the following morning the abs dash light was on and the abs was inoperable. if this problem is not limited to my vehicle it seems to warrant some re-engineering by gmc. given our road conditions, un-announced failures of the anti-lock braking system could pose a serious danger to motorists who might just end up relying on the system to help avoid an accident. additionally, i am told that as this is technically an electrical failure my warranty does not cover the cost of repair. the manufacturer should be responsible for repairing safety related items on the vehicle that seem to fail repeadtely over a resanably short period of time. *ak

When braking the brakes make a noise and have lost vacuum power and gone straight to the floor numerous times. the first time was when attempting to brake when going down an incline to turn into a parking lot. a slight bump when braking and the brake pedal went to the floor. a few seconds later, i was able to brake again. this has happened more often on wet or slippery surfaces. on 07/21/00 i was in a parking lot when another car was pulling in front of me. the surface was still wet and slippery and when braking, the brake pedal made a noise and then all braking ability is lost, the brake pedal goes to the floor. luckily there was no accident. this problem has happened to me numerous times. i brought my vehicle in for the abs recall the end of 1999 and told the dealership about the problem. they couldn't find anything wrong. i travel a lot with my family and a braking problem is very scary!!! *ak

Anti-lock repeatedly engages and pulsates brakes at low speed stops. has caused one collision and at least 15 other close calls. usually occurs when slowing for a traffic signal, etc. at slow enough speeds that the anti-lock should not engage. after this occurs, the abs warning light comes on. when the warning light is on, the brakes work fine. when the warning light goes back off, it is then likely to reoccur at any time. warning light has stayed on since last occurance and i feel safer as long as the warning light stays on. i'm already paying for this safety defect through higher insurance rates and shouldn't have to pay to replace an obviously faulty system. i just received my 2nd abs recall for this vehicle but it appears this problem addresses a different defect in the same abs system. *ak

Windshield wipers work sometimes but more then often do not work. i called gmc as there was a recall but they tell me my vin number was not part of the recall. the recall was a month before i bought the truck. why do i have the same problem but i'm not part of the recall? on the brakes- it was recalled for the antilock on a volunteer basis. i took it in for the computer adjustment as per the recall fix, they said it was done and a week later, on the same road it first happened to me, a light changed, i hit the brakes (not hard) and antilock kicked in and the pedal went to the floor and i almost crashed as my heart went into my stomach. long before the recall, i had my truck into gmc many times for brake problems and even wrote letters that describe the recall long before i know there was one! gm says my truck brakes are fixed but they're not. the wipers they won't cover. other then these problems and that the engine idles rough and is rough at low speeds, i really like my jimmy!!*ak

*ak

When driving at highway speed and when turning a corner at 15 mph, applied the brakes, and abs system kicked in, causing the vehicle to slide. also, power brake systmem went and transmission went failed. in addition, dealer replaced the brake pads. *ak

Pulled out of parking lot on to road. applied brakes while approaching a light. even with both feet on the brake pedal the 1996 gmc jimmy barely came to a stop from a distance of 6 car lengths going 30 mph. narrowly avoided rear-ending vehicle in front of me. this was not the first time but the closet encounter. before this incident i had the front rotors, disk pads, calipers, front flex lines, booster, vacumm hose and connector on engine to booster, master cyl., and rear brake linings - replaced. since then i had the vacumm checked from the engine to the booster and was told the booster was bad. i had the booster and masterc replaced again. still no change. pedal goes too far down and feels like it hits a brick followed by very weak breaking action.*ak

This is the second jimmy i drive (too loyal for my own good.) the first one a 1995. also had a booster failure at around 40,000+ miles (luckily i was able to coast on that occasion to a full stop without causing any damage to anyone. this one a 1996 has failed, like clockwork, at 45,000 miles. *ak |
