Defect SummaryVehicle description: s -trucks equipped with 2 wheel drive. these vehicles may have had the right-hand antilock brake system (abs) module feed pipe and/or brake crossover pipe tube nuts tightened without seating the pipe-flared-ends enough to withstand normal assembly and vehicle inputs without partially unseating. this does not comply with requirements of fmvss no. 105, hydraulic service brake normal, emergency, and park braking performance.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurred, the seating seal could be broken during vehicle assembly, or from early road inputs or brake fluid cycling, and a leak could occur increasing the brake stopping distance.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the brake pipe union for signs of brake fluid, and if necessary, install a new brake pipe union.
NotesOwner notification began august 20, 1999.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

On january 5, 2004 i tried to stop my 2000 gmc jimmy (suv), instead of stopping, the jimmy picked up speed and resulted in a three car crash. two of the cars (my jimmy and a 1995 mercury) were totaled and the other car (a honda runner suv)had damage totaling $11,000. althought i was driving 35 mph, when my car hit the car in front of it (the roasrunner), neither of the airbags in my jimmy were deplyed. luckily, no one was hurt in this accident. the mechanics at henderson chevy in las vegas informed me that the abs system failed miserably. as for the airbags, they did not have a clue. i contacted gmc and filed a formal complaint. their investigators came to the dealer and authorized some work on the jimmy so as to assess the damage and the reasons for the crash. as of this writing, i have not received any reports from gmc. i have tried, repeatedly, to contact gmc but no one would return my calls. i also demanded that the results of their investigation be sent to me in writing. this request was, also, ignored.*ak

At 94,445 miles: noticed a small leakage on garage floor, forward of left rear tire--within 10 miles noted significantly reduced braking capability. taken to repair facility the following morning...the steel brake lines on driver's side were found corroded and cracked which caused brake fluid loss- ironically as the service technician was pulling the vehicle into the service bay--there was a total loss of rear brakes-- only then--in the bay, did the brake service warning light came on! (good reason to call them ' idiot' lights)

Upon inspection of 2000 gmc jimmy 4dr / 4wd brake line drivers side over frame next to fuel tank held down by a clip leading to rear brakes ruptured due to corrosion around the clip area that holds the line to frame causing total loss rear brakes and proper braking when brake pedal went to the floor while returning home to park vehicle at our residence,.. luckily at time of incident we were on our own rural property in driveway which is (approximately 2/10 mile long) and not the busy main highway which was traveled at 55 mph. the terrain was used in our driveway to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. thankfully no injury's to occupants (including a 3 year old child) or damage to vehicle occurred with this incident.
12/27/2008620001
Noticed dampness around the left rear brake hose to rear brake caliper. we took our vehicle to be inspected and were told that there are 2 copper washers that are causing the leak and requires replacement. we were also told that this is quite a common problem. if this was not repaired and the leak continued, it would have resulted in the loss brake performance, loss of vehicle control and injury to the occupants. *tr

I bought a 2000 jimmy from oak motors. i have had it for 5 months. in the last 5 months i have replaced the alternator, 3 pulleys, serpentine belt. the brakes are going out, power steering is going out, engine is tapping. i took it back after having it for 10 days because the service engine light came on. they wanted 175.00 to look at it. i was told at the time of purchase that i had to purchase the warranty for 995.00, i thought this was to cover any problem with the vehicle. it doesn't. they now want 540.00 to fix it. please help. *tr

I have a 2000 slt jimmy which has been a pain. i've had lower ball joints replaced, upper ball joints replaced, major problems with the brakes, u joints replaced, hub and wheel bearing problems, altenator failure, a/c blower motor replaced, broken blend door which caused encoder motor and module failure, rear wiper moter replaced, back window lock replaced. too many things have gone wrong with this vehicle. gmc should consider some sort of recall because i've read many complaints regarding some of the same issues.*ak

On wednesday june 23, 2004, i went to red holman pontiac to replace a hub and bearing assembly on the front left wheel of my gmc jimmy 2000. a grinding and metallic noise was coming from the front of the vehicle and i had to have done at the dealer. two years ago, this same hub and bearing assembly was replaced at 48000 miles. now, this vehicle has 75000 miles and i have to replace the right hub and bearing assembly. this means that this part only lasted 48000 miles and the replacement part less than 27000 miles. on both instances, there was also a failure of the abs brake system. i have owned over the years more than 11 gm cars with various mileages at trading time and i never had to replace a bearing. when the first replacement assembly was put in, the dealer told me that it was a hazard and for the other wheel, the dealer acknowledged the fact that it is a safety hazard on my invoice if these parts pose a threat to the safety of gmc owners, why is gmc installing parts with material defects? i was also informed that the replacement part carries only a 12000 miles warranty and the price is about $460 and labor $124.00. luckily, the first repair was under warranty, but this time i had to negotiate with the dealer and i had to pay $284.00. i believe that these parts should last longer since there is neither maintenance nor any facility to disassemble the unit. i see no fault with the dealer; rather i see a manufacturer defective product. this repair should have been the gmc responsibility due to the short life span of this product.*ak sincerely, claude durand

Upon hearing the wear indicator on front brakes of my 2000 gmc jimmy with 24000+ miles on it, i took it in for repair expecting only pad replacement and maybe machining of the rotors. as it turned out, all 4 rotors needed replacement due to large areas of deep corrosion that, according to the repair shop, was severe enough to affect braking, and thus, pad wear, leading to premature failure of these critical components. an attempt was made to machine one rotor to get past the corrosion, but the corrosion was too deep and would leave the rotor too thin. the repair shop is beginning to see this problem on late model gm vehicles, and as such, provided me with all the parts that were replaced (4 rotors and all pads) as well as an itemized list of new parts used in anticipation of some sort of follow-up action from gm or the government.*ak
