21 year old step-daughter drove my truck to work this afternoon, when she went to leave at the end of her shift, she stepped on the brake pedal to shift out of park, it went all the way to the floor. thankfully she was still in her parking space, and not out in traffic on a very busy 6 lane road. i found at least one of the 2 brake lines from the master cylinder rusted completely through where they are clipped into the plastic guide on top of the frame. *tr

On my way to the store i noticed reduced brake pedal and increased stopping distance. no warning lights were on at this time. on my way home the brake warning light came on and i had even less pedal and needed extreme stopping distance. i went directly to the repair station and the mechanic found heavily rusted lines especially in the areas of the abs module. one of the lines was rusted thru and leaking in the area of the abs module causing the malfunction. i already have had the brake lines to the front calipers replaced in july of 2012 due to extreme rust. i am having all the brake lines replaced with stainless steel at the time of this posting. this vehicle gets very light duty personnel use and shows no signs of rust in the body. *tr

I have a 2000 gmc sierra with an anti-lock brake problem. at low speed braking the truck's anti-lock system comes on and causes the truck not to stop correctly. this has caused many near collisions. i spoke to gm about the problem and was told the they had repaired the truck before i owned it, and they had fixed the problem. but if the same problem is happening again, then they have not fixed it. i understand that wear and tear is a issue with every car and that over time things need to be repaired, but if it's the brake system itself and not the condition of the brakes, shouldn't that fall on gm to make that correction. thank you *tr

Thank goodness no one was hurt, and no vehicle hit when my brake lines burst on this vehicle. when repaired the mechanic said they basically rotted off from rust and that this is a very common problem on these vehicles. i understand some maintenance is normal on any truck, but being able to use your fingers to crumble parts of the brake line is not. you need to investigate this before people are hurt or killed, if some haven't been already. you also need to revisit the abs sensor problem from the previous recall. that fix did not work, so all i could do is disconnect them or chance an accident!!!!!!!!!!

Truck had failed to stop at an intersection as we approached red light. upon depressing the pedal the brake pedal went to the floor just enough to get truck slowed before emergency pedal was depressed to come to a complete stop. we were traveling about 20 miles an hour before we reached intersection about 75 yards away. as light turned green, we slowly pulled into a parking lot and parked truck until a tow truck could get vehicle back to the garage for repairs. upon inspection by our mechanic, it was found that the brake line had ruptured near the anti-lock brake housing which was caused by corrossion and poor brake line tubing material. it was noted that material was not stainless steel or any non-corrosive material supplied and installed by the oem. it took two weeks for our truck to be repaired as the mechanic had to customer bend the new brake lines because oem does not have replacement lines which came to a final cost of close to $1300.

Anti lock brake sensor corrosion causes low speed braking failure. diving at less than 5 mph was terrifying. almost hitting pedestrians at a crosswalk, rolling into an intersection, and almost hitting a stopped car in front of me. i took the truck to the dealer and they verified the corroded sensors. this was a recalled issue already complied with. no help from gm. they said the burden was mine.

Complete brake failure due to excessive corrosion. i got lucky that i had room to roll out. upon inspection i noticed that many components show signs of excessive rust.

While driving home i pushed the brake pedal and experienced a ruptured brake line under the drivers side door. luckily no crash occured because i was on a back road with no traffic. after inspection it was confirmed that all brake lines were very badly corroded and all were ready to fail. the worst damage appeared near the wheels which i would assume is due to road salt and moisture.

I have a 2000 gmc serria that had brake line rust through causing brake failure. i got under the vehicle to try and change the line and found all the lines are severly rusted as is the fuel lines. yes my truck is old and i live in the rust belt of n.y but something needs to be done either n.y stop using salt or the vehicles need to be built with lines that dont rust out. this issue i think is a safety issue that would be easily fixed by either no more salt or better line in the vehicles that dont rust through.

I have a 2000 gmc sierra 1500 sle pickup truck. at 8 years ols - one of my brake lines failed while driving on the highway. this was due to extensive corrosion on the under carriage of the car. i had to have every last brake line replaced for $1,600 due to the corrosion. i have never seen corrosion on such an important component before. as an aside, much of the rest of the truck is incredibly corroded on the underside, and i just had a fuel line fail for the same reason.

Braking coming to a red light. catastrophic brake failure occurred due to brake line corrosion. upon investigation, all five brake lines leading from the pump under the drivers seat, next to the frame are severely corroded. everything else is in very good condition. there is almost no corrosion at, except the severely corroded brake lines. all brake lines need to be replaced. this is clearly an issue of inferior brake lines used.

Abs activation at slow speed, often when turning. paid for wheel speed sensor cleaning and reinstall 12/14/2004. recall for same problem performed 11/16/2005. symptoms have returned, dealer will not perform recall procedure a second time at no cost. slow speed abs activation increases stopping distance, and can cause a crash. *tr

Excessive rust from middle of under carriage on back lead to two part failures. rear main brake line on driver side of vehicle burst while applying brakes in driveway leading to brake failure. i stopped truck by applying emergency brake and slamming transmission into park--thank god this happened in my driveway and not on the road-- research on internet reveals excessive rust for these trucks is common. after hearing about the toyota tundras dropping a spare tire due to excessive rust, i figure brake failure possibly leading to traffic accident qualifies too. *tr

Purchased 2000 gmc sierra 1500 new. have during time of ownership had both front and rear disc brakes/rotors repaired/replaced twice. once with 20,151 miles under warranty. the last set of front rotors and pads were replaced with 74,299 miles during the recall 05068 for abs speed sensor corrosion. i had to pay for this set of rotors and pads at a cost of $406.03. since time of safety recall truck has intermittently not stopped properly at low speed. while driving i attempted to stop heard a slight pop and the brake peddle went to the floor with little resistance. had truck taken to dealer ship where last brake repair and safety recall was performed, they discovered that my main brake line had rusted through and had failed. at that time they also informed me that all the brake lines were rusty and should be replaced. i had at the time of dropping the vehicle off informed them of the problem with low speed braking and the feeling that the abs was activating. upon repair of the main brake line at $244.32 (i declined to have all brake lines replaced at my expense) they test drove the vehicle and indicated that they were unable to experience the low speed brake failure. i do not believe that a vehicle with less than 90,000 miles should have brake lines rust through, that two sets of rotors rust to the point of failure. this degree of rust to the braking system appears excessive and unwarranted. in looking at internet appears to be serious problem with 2000 gmc and chevy pickups. wife will not ride in the truck as she feels it is unsafe since can't always stop truck! *tr

While replacing the fuel filter on the vehicle the mechanic stated the fuel lines were badly rusted and started leaking. the transmission and brake lines were also found in the same condition. i was advised that all the lines should be replaced immediately due to their deteriorated condition. the vehicle was not safe to operate in it's current condition. went to dealer to order parts and was told that the transmission and fuel lines could be ordered (approx. $500.00) but the brake lines are no longer available. also the rear brake backing plates have rusted off the vehicle. all 4 rotors have been replaced 3 times along with brake pads. the vehicle has approx. 70,000 miles. i had a few near misses when trying to stop quickly - abs problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 gmc sierra k1500. while attempting to depress the brake pedal at approximately 4-5 mph, the antilock brakes automatically engaged. this prevents the vehicle from coming to a complete stop. the failure has occurred on dry pavement and sunny weather conditions. the vehicle eventually comes to a complete stop over a period of time. as a result, the contact runs the risk of rear ending another vehicle. through research, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 for the same failure. he took the vehicle to a mechanic and had the vehicle diagnosed. it was discovered that the front abs assembly was defective and needed to be replaced. the contact called the manufacturer and explained the issue. gm stated that his vin was not included in the recall; therefore, they would not be responsible for the repairs. a mechanic performed the repair, but the contact believes that the vehicle should have been included in the recall. the failure mileage was 129,000 and current mileage was 133,000. updated 12/30/08 *bf while depressing the brake pedal, the anti-lock brakes engaged on dry pavement. the problem started out as increasing in stopping distance. the consumer stated the anti-lock brakes vibrated so violently he was unable to stop the vehicle. the only way to stop the vehicle was to pull the fuse controlling the anti-lock brakes. updated 01/05/09. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 gmc sierra 1500. the contact received a recall notice for the service brakes wheel speed sensor. on september 19, 2007, the dealer repaired the recall; however, the abs and brake warning lights have been illuminated since the recall repair was performed. while driving between 15 and 50 mph, the vehicle made a loud noise. the dealer stated that the wheel speed sensor and wheel bearings were one unit. the dealer also stated that they cleaned one side and the other side did not need to be cleaned. the service manager confirmed that they used force to remove parts from the vehicle and stated that the vehicle was able to withstand much more damage than what occurred. during the recall repair, the dealer damaged the front ball joint and dented the rotors. the driver side ball joints were replaced; however, the failure is worse than it was prior to having the recall repair performed. the dealer was unable to provide the contact with an invoice. when the abs light is illuminated, the brakes fail to operate normally. the contact has to shut off the engine to allow the abs to reset itself. a second diagnosis by a different dealer revealed that the driver and front passenger side wheel bearings were damaged, including the passenger side that was repaired for the recall. the second dealer further stated that the noise was due to the wheel bearings failing to move freely. the manufacturer was informed by the dealer that there was no noise present. the manufacturer provided the contact with claim number 71558918083. the approximate failure mileage was 106,500 and current mileage was 108,500. updated 03/05/08. *lj the consumer stated informed dealer many times for the ticking heard in the vehicle since the vehicle at the time purchase. updated 03/04/08 *tr

2000 gmc 1500 sierra 47,357 miles had a recall about a year ago. they cleaned and etched front brake lines at the calipers. today towing a trailer with a car in the i-95 corridor between d.c. and baltimore i had to attempt a quick stop for slow traffic when suddenly i lost all breaking pressure and fortunately ended at the inner grass space barely saving a horrible crush with several cars lined in front of me. my front reservoir was very low, underneath the car at the driver's door level all 4 break lines were badly swollen and corroded, one at least was obviously dripping, and even the frame was corroded and metal chunks were easily knocked. other sections look very rusty worse than a 65 ford galaxie am restoring .and this at almost 48,000 miles . *tr
