Was driving 65 mph's and tried to stop quickly, but not to the point of squeeling brakes and truck refused to stop. i ended up driving through the turn into a grassy, flat medium before stopping. brakes were initially pressed at 65 and failed immediately and you could feel the anti-lock system working because of the vibration, but that is also when braking ceased. i had a witness in the car and we were fortunate i had experienced this type of behavior before qand was able to take control and steer away from any major obstacles. this has happened is the past in sudden stopping situations on dry land and also in snow and rain or anytime the anti-lock system became activated. i have anti-lock in our 1994 mitzubishi galant and the difference in stopping ability is not even near each other in effectiveness. i'm not sure what my options are but i thought that a recall was generated from this and all gm trucks where the ability to control the vehicle was very minimal under similar circumstances but my dealership said that this was arumor only and no recall had ever been issued. i have talked this over with owners of similar vehicles (gm trucks) and we have all experienced this type of episode. this rumor, by the way, was in printed form in our local newspaper about 6 months ago and i just confronted my dealer just last week again. i know this is a problem and by documenting this complaint in the manner i am currently doing hopefully will act as a documented approach in case of an accident to myself or family member which would allow a lawsuit. i would prefer a safety recall to fix the problem before an accident does occur.

Dt: the consumer owns a 1994 gmc sonoma. the consumer is having problems with the brakes. sometimes when she is trying to stop, it will excessive force to stop the vehicle. the dealership wanted to charge her 125 dollars to look at it. in two months she has had the brakes replaced three times. they have replaced the rotors, pads, drums, emergency brake cable and nothing seemed to help. the abs light has never come on. gmc stated the consumers vin was not included in with the recall because her vehicle was too old and a lot of miles on it. the shocks have also been replaced. the nhtsa campaign id numbers are 99i006000 and 99v193000. *jb

Anti-lock light goes on & brakes go to the floor had it in to the dealer was told nothing was wrong, took it home light came on again & no brakes, twice i almost killed myself. took it back to dealer they then found the problem, i was told it was hub bearing worn & rubbing on the anti-lock sensor. i do not think that should make my brakes go to the floor. my brakes were in excellent condition. there were no signs of noise or wear on the hub bearings.*ak

The abs brakes that gmc put on this pickup appear to be miss calibrated or something like that. the brakes appear to work fine at high speeds. it is a different story when you try to stop when the speed drops. dry pavement with sand on it the stopping distance is extended. the local dealer found an special factory order and replaced the brake brain which didn't change anything. the brake pads on the front are new and the rear shoes are in good shape. when you try to drive on the antifreeze compound the state and city apply to the streets makes it a real challange to even slow down with out front brake lock up. i carry about 400# of weight in the winter to faciltate starting and stopping. last winter i was coming down a hill very slowly and applied the brakes and front wheel lockup and the back wheels didn't stop but turned slowly leaving tread marks. the rears didn't slide at all as i slide off the road in the a snow bank. i try not to drive the pickup in the winter because i don't want to cause a wreck. every time i try and stop in the winter it is a thrill. my car has abs and i know how abs should work. this pickup is the greatest truck i have every owned except for the brakes. i do understand that my truck has many miles on it, but it is well maintained. gmc should be able to come out with a fix for the brakes before somebody is killed. i really don't want to park the truck or junk it. thank you.

Vehicle not listed by gmc as being one as defined by nhtsa campain id number: 99v193000. this is per my local gmc dealer. my vehicle's anti-lock brakes do malfunction as defined. on icy/snow covered surfaces and gravel hills the brake pedal will suddenly drop while foot pressure is being applied. the brakes will then lockup unexpectedly. the only way to overcome or prevent this malfunction is to place the vehicle shift lever into four wheel drive before hand. this problem is so widespread there is an aftermarket kit available that allows the gmc owner to bypass the abs system. i know gm owners who have done so because they feel the abs brake system is unsafe. do you know how many of the 1125749 potential number of units affected were actuallly notified by gmc to have this problem corrected? *ak
12/07/1999100004/01/1999
My pick up has four wheel anti lock brakes. when the brakes are applied on irregular surface the stopping time is greatly extended. when you have one front wheel on a slick surface it slides and the stopping distance is extended. today i pulled the front wheels on ice and applied the brakes with the back wheels on bare pavement and the stopping time was greatly extended and the front wheels appeared to lock up. i have been told by gmc that they are working on this problem with you and may have a resolution in january. i would hate to have a wreck in the mean time. i have not notice any of these brake problems with my 1999 lhs.
12/01/19951210/01/1995
Brakes are woefully inadequate with or without abs coming into play. i've had numerous incidents where i could not stop this vehicle in a normal stopping distance because of either abs kicking in from a single tire bounce while stopping on uneven road surfaces or when the truck was loaded, such as when hauling heavy material or pulling a loaded trailer. the front disc pads for this truck are exceedingly undersized when compared against a similar weighted sedan (5300lbs) and sedans aren't expected to haul 1/2 ton loads. i have accidentally traveled through intersections trying to stop this vehicle several times. luckily never hitting anyone or getting hit but very disturbed. i understand there are two recall campaign programs slated for this vehicle by gm (99i006000 and 99v193000) but per my dealer gm is several months away from having any parts or corrections for this.

Anti-lock braking system has a design defect that causes longer than necessary stopping distances and on some similar models may cause fmvss105 stopping distance failures. the abs system during any 4wd abs event will completely release the rear brakes, and keep brake pressure at zero during the entire stop. normally abs is not activated during fmvss105 compliance testing so the manufactures test results will not show this effect. the increase in stopping distance is unecessary and unsafe. the vehicle also does not have an accelerometer or g-switch for reference velocity in four wheel drive which can cause the abs to allow the wheels to lock at a significant speed and the driver to lose control. *ak

Upon three separate situations, last one and the only one which caused front end crash damage, i was attempting to stop quickly at about 35 mph, the truck felt as if it were on ice. the truck took longer to stop than expected and there was no pulsing feeling in the brake pedal or no sounds while consistently holding it down with hard foot pressure. the brake pads were changed at around 50,000 mi. on the other two occasions, the same thing happened but i was able to avoid a crash because of clearance to manuver into the other lane. *ak

The problem i am having is that the brakes on this vehicle do not work very well. i have replaced the master cylinder, brake shoes and pads and brake fluid. the brake system is still inadequate. the pedal bottoms out on the floor and it is very difficult to stop. please help me and the many consumers who are suffering from these problems. gm has taken advantage of us and is endagering the lives of it's customers and other drivers on the road. they need to find a solution and i think a recall is warranted.
