Defect Summary | Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that could decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. if contact occurs and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. the brake warning lamp will be activated when the brake fluid level reaches the indicator limit.
Consequence Summary | During braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. if this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will inspect the front right-hand brake pipe for wear. if there are signs of wear, this section of the brake pipe will be replaced with a new designed brake pipe section. if there are not signs of wear on the brake pipe, the dealer will install a spacer clip to ensure sufficient clearance between the brake pipe and the body cross sill.
Notes | Owner notification began february 5, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236). |

The first time the abs ebcu failed we had only owned the car a few years. we figured out something was wrong by the continuous growling buzz under the vehicle. we had to full the fuse to disconnect the unit to prevent it from running down the battery while we tried to learn exactly what was wrong. ----------- on the good side, the car runs fine without it. on the bad side, ebcu replacement is a ridiculously expensive repair. gm charges $1400 for the stupid part, the total was just under $2000 by the time all was done.----------- it would be one thing if the ebcu was some great invention that really improved the human condition. it is not. not only does it never help, it is actually dangerous.---------- any time you try to stop on bumpy roads the ebcu fights you. many times i thought i was going to drive into an accident at an intersection because there was a bump and then the stupid abs unit would not let me brake. it forces the brake pedal up and lets the car roll forward when i am frantically trying to stop the car.---------- how many times i have wished i didn't have power brakes at all! ---------- the reason i found this website is because now at 130782 the stupid thing has failed again. now without a warranty, but with the internet, i learned how many other people have experienced the failure of this unit. there are many pages about it among gm car enthusiast groups, and even ebay auctions offering to fix the things! ---------- the ebcu is in a tight spot you can only get to with one hand while lying under the vehicle, and a quart of brake fluid drips out on you as you sequentially undo the 5 brake lines that lead to the unit.---------- my general opinion about auto design is that whoever approves the final design of some part should have to change one of them at home with tools commonly available to an average citizen! *tr

While driving vehicle and towing boat depressed brake pedal and it went to the floor. there was no prior warning that brakes were about to fail. used emergency brake to stop vehicle. after getting vehicle to secure location, observed steady stream of brake fluid running onto ground from under drivers side door. apparently rotten brake lines that run from front of vehicle to rear failed. *tr

1. during a family vacation to florida, my braking system started to fail at slow speeds normally between 5 and 10mph. the brake pedal would become stiff and the system would make noise like the abs was being activated. 2. being a family vehicle, i had the repair done immediately, the technicians in florida were not familiar with my symptom. at first they replaced the master cylinder but this did not solve the problem. 3. the crew took two additional days to figure out finally that the front wheel sensors for the abs were corroded (because i live in maine) and they finally replaced the sensors and this alleviated the problem.

This relates to the recently announced investingation into the anti-lock brakes on gm light trucks and suvs. nhtsa action number pe05020 i own a 2000 yukon xl. when the vehicle was about 2 1/2 years old, it developed the slow-speed abs activation problem described in your above-described action, resulting in occasional inability to stop properly at stop signs and parking spaces. the frequency of incident increased, until in early 2004, we had an incident where we bumped another vehicle, although with no damage or injuries. we then took it to a local gmc dealership, who repaired it by disassembly, cleaning and reassembly, at our expense, since the warranty period had lapsed. as of now, the problem has not yet reoccurred, however, we believe that since the problem was caused by corrosion, it will reoccur. we would like a permanent fix, as well as perhaps gm to take financial responsibility for the repair already performed.

My gmc yukon xl has braking and fuel system problems, i have had 1 accident because of the yukons brakes deactivating while hitting a small bump on the street while trying to avoid the accident. i have contacted gmc and all they said is they would offer me a 1,000 rebate on the next purchase of another vehicle, although they advertised this defective product on (cnn) along with the other defects. there has been other hidden recalls on this vehicle and the manufacturer did not properly tell or notify me. *jb

On my 2000 gmc yukon xl, a computer module for the antilock brake system is defective and goes out causing a small electric motor to stay on running the battery down. the fuse for the anti-lock braking system must be removed, thus disabling the anti-lock braking system to keep the battery from dying. this has already happened twice on my vehicle and also to many others with 1999-2002 yukons. gmc knows of the problem but refuses to correct it. *nm

Abs sensor went bad in front passenger side wheel bearing assembly. abs would go off on dry roads just before vehicle stopped. sometimes this caused our vehicle to take longer to stop. we had the whole wheel bearing assembly replaced by a non dealer garage to the tune of $382.47. now one year later the problem is back. i think gm has a big problem here and should recall all these. our 2000 gmc yukon xl only has 50,000 miles on it.

Dt: the brake's abs system is malfunctioning. the brakes are not engaging properly at low and high speeds. the brakes have to be pumped a couple of times before you can come to a complete stop. the consumer has had the brakes replaced once. the dealer was the one to replace the brakes. the speeds are between 20-30, high 40-50 when you have to start pumping them. if you hit a bump at low speeds the brakes will push back up instead of down. the consumer has had this problem for 5 years. the dealer was informed that there was a problem on the vehicle. the consumer was in a minor accident because of the brake failure. *tt

When applying the brakes on my 2000 gmc yukon xl i have experienced engagement of the anti-lock brakes and subsequent increased distance required to stop the vehicle. i have not had any accidents related to this problem. the described problem usually occurs at lower speeds, 25-40mph, and good road conditions (dry pavement). i have recently had maintance work preformed on this vehicle at the gmc dealership wheire i purchased the car. i reported the braking problem to the service managerand asked that the brake and anti-lock brake system be inspected. prior to visual inspection of the brake system a test drive was completed in an attempt to duplicate the braking problem. i was informed that the vibration: was due to a problem in the steering column and it did not pose any safety threat. i explained again that the vibration was not felt in the steering wheel but in the brake shoe while applying the brakes. the brakes were inspected and reported to have 80% wear on the front brake pads. the rear brake pads had been replaced about 9 months ago and still looked good. there was no reported problem with the anti-lock brakes. i requested to have the front brake pads replaced at that time. all maintance service with the exception of oil and filter changes has been done at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased.
