2001 yukon xl parking brake inoperative. dealer says normal wear and tear. but car is in excellent condition and i hardly ever use the parking brake. normal brakes are still good at 68000 miles. informed by several mechanics that this is a normal occurrence with this vehicle. this is a design flaw gm should fix. *nm

My 2001 gmc yukon xl 1500 slt parking brake has failed. the vehicle has 66000 miles and is in excellent condition and properly maintained. the parking brake foot lever goes to the floor and does not hold at all. the parking brake failure was reported to me by a chevy/gmc dealer during my latest state vehicle safety inspection. i am the second owner of the vehicle. the original owner says he never used the parking brake. i have never used the parking brake because it is not needed in our flat terrain. according to repair shops and the internet, this is a common safety problem with many os these vehicles. you may already be aware of this safety problem, but i show no information on your web site. i am informing you of this to perhaps prevent a serious accident. any help you can provide will be grateful. *nm

2001 gmc yukon. abs module failed causing pump to run continuously. rather than pay $1,000 for repair, opted to have fuse pulled (suggested by gmc service manager). abs light on dashboard stays lit constantly now. so does the brake light. parking/emergency brake has not worked for three years now. two weeks ago the traction assist off light came on and now it stays lit up too. from what i read in the owners manual, this problem may possibly be related to the abs. after much internet research, i have come to learn that problems referenced above are quite common with gmc vehicles. since the problems are related to the braking capability of the vehicle i believe there are some serious safety issues that need to be addressed. not to mention the fact that i will lose approximately $1500-$2000 value when i try to sell this vehicle. *nm

Dt: the contact stated the emergency brake failed twice. first, it happened in october 2002. the vehicle was taken to the dealership ,and they replaced the emergency brake bands ,and turned the drums. the dealership was unaware why it went out that early. this happened again in september 2005, the vehicle was taken back to the dealership, and they replaced the emergency brake system again. they said there was a clip in the brakes that may have fallen off. the contact then called gm, and they stated there was nothing that could be done. *ak updated 11/29/2005. *nm

Non-working parking brake. if the vehicle is left in neutral (automatic or manual) with the parking brake applied the vehicle can roll. see 05v161000. this is caused by a design flaw from the manufacturer that causes the parking brake to not fully disengage while driving causing wear on the parking brake components. these vehicles have separate brake systems for normal and parking brakes. the parking brake system should never wear out. applies to all 1999 - 2005 gm & gmc full size pickups and full size suv vehicles. *jb

Dt: the consumer stated that the parking brake system failed. the vehicle is a 2001 yukon xl. the consumer took the vehicle to a repair shop to have it repaired. the consumer talked to gm, and they offered no free repair. the brakes have been failing for the past year. the consumer's vehicle failed inspection, and that was how he figured out there was a problem. the consumer felt that this was similar to nhsta recall 05v161000.*ak

Heard slight grinding noises while making turns. short time later i discoverd the parking brake would not hold the vehicle while in neutral with the motor running. vehicle begin rolling down my driveway. made appointment with dealer and discovered parking brake drums and shoes were worn out. repaired under warranty, but considering the work involved, i am sure it would have been rather expensive. i hope the dealer used the new style spring clip.

2001 yukon/xl parking brake does not work. failed inspection twice, first repaired under warranty at ~15k miles, second for $225 at ~65k miles. never has held. last time was adjusted to hold, drags brake when released as too tight. obvious poor design and safety hazard. can never assume parking brake will hold. *jb

I own a 2001 yukon xl and have a parking brake problem. when the pedal is pushed, it goes all the way to the floor. when i raised this issue with the service dept. in the first 3,000 miles, i was told this is normal, but have since discovered otherwise. i now have 46,000 miles on the vehicle. i just paid $125.00 to have it repaired by another dealer who told me of the design defect. gm needs to recall all the vehicles and correct the design flaw.*jb

My 2001 yukon xl has experienced a mechanical parking brake problem since purchase in 2000. at approximate mileage 11500 i took the vehicle into the gmc dealership where it was purchased to complain that the parking brake went to the floor when applied. they told me that was the way it was designed. since that time i have tried to use the parking brake several times and found that it did not hold the vehicle when applied. a few months ago i had my vehicle serviced by a non gmc shop and told them about a swishing/rubbing noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, which now has approximately 73 k miles on it. they told me that this was the parking brake pads rubbing on the rotor and that this was a gmc design flaw that gmc was well aware of. i then took the vehicle to a gmc shop, coury gmc in mesa, az, where i bought the vehicle. i again told them of the non functional brake as i had previously done at the 11.5k mileage mark. service personnel again told me that the brake was designed to go to the floor when applied. they also told me that the rear rotor and emergency brake pad was worn out and needed replacement. i showed them the previous service order from the 11.5k mileage mark. they told me that they would not fix the parking brake at their expence because too many miles had accumulated between complaints. i live in the arizona desert and can count on one hand the number of times that i have applied then released the parking brake as it does not hold the vehicle. according to independent shop owners the parking brake design is defective and wears out even if it is not used. this is obviously apparent in my case. not only does the parking brake not hold the vehicle when applied it wears out when not in use and causes damage to the rear brake rotor, a definate safety issue. i was not surprised that there are many other complaints on the nhtsa website covering this very issue.*ak

On may 17, 2003 my 4 year old daughter was killed in our driveway by our 2001 gmc yukon. we were cleaning the rear of our vehicle when the vehicle came out of gear and the parking brake failed to hold the vehicle. my 2 year old son was in the vehicle at the time, but there is no way that he could have applied the brake to release the vehicle out of gear. this is something that no family should have to endure and i am asking for help in proving these failures. i feel there are two failures with this vehicle. the parking brake on all models of these vehicles fails to hold these vehicles. i have searched your websites to find 50 plus complaints about the parking brake on gmc/chevrolet vehicles of this kind failing to hold the vehicle and vehicles not passing safety inspections because the parking brake does not support the vehicle. the second issue is i believe that there was either a malfunction of the transmission or that there are mechanical overrides in this vehicle as in the 2003 gmc envoy recall campaign #03v075 that can allow the transmission to be shifted out of park with the ignition in the off position. i also, i found odi id number: 897722 which shows that this should be investigated. i believe a full investigation should be done on the parking brake and the transmission of the gmc and chevrolet vehicles. this is the link to the accident. http://www.springsgov.com/newsresults.asp?newsid=688 please help!!!!!!*jb

2001 yukon xl parking brakes inoperative. failed dealer inspection. he said they just wear out. interesting, my vehicle has 60000, and the disc brakes are still the original. i have rarely used the parking brake. maybe on a hill once or twice. this is a design problem or a module problem and gmc is not taking responsibility. i have an extended warranty and its not covered according to the dealer. the abs went out at 40000, and was covered by the warranty. i'm perplexed about gmc's lack of concern for its products and safety.*ak

My 2001 yukon xl failed inspection on 10/06/2003 due to an inoperative emergency/parking brake. the gmc dealer which performed inspections that this is a known problem (the parking brake hanging open and wearing) to both the dealer and to gm, but no recall has been issued. my husband adjusted the emergency/parking brake the same evening and the suv passed at re-inspection the following morning, however, the emergency/parking brake is again hung open and wearing (less than 24 hours after being fixed and passing inspection). *la

I have a 2001 gmc yukon xl and took it in for some routine maintenance at about 30k miles. the dealer informed me that the parking brake was not operating properly (would not hold the vehicle). since it is a wear item it wasn't covered by the warranty. i have owned several gm vehicles as well as many of my family members and i have never had a problem with the parking brake wearing out, let alone prior to 30k miles. the original dealer gave us an estimate of $800 to fix the parking brake. at this time we are waiting a response from gm's customer service dept.*ak

2001 yukon parking brake was pre-maturely worn. my own rudimentary research shows that this is becoming a pervasive problem for many late model gm suv/truck owners. brake shoe was gone, scraping metal to metal with rotor. parking brake was not functional and potential hazardous if relied upon for parking on an incline. defect in the brake shoe alone was $250 to repair + $200 to replace the rotor damaged by the faulty brake shoe. gm has acknowledged this problem with a service bulletin, but refuses to replace voluntarily. *jb
