Was driving approx 60mph on newly paved 4 lane highway (us 31). vehicle began to make a noise and then shake. front driver's side tire was completely destroyed with approx 80% of the tread and belt separated from the tire and numerous holes in the tire. many sharp steel prong ends were sticking out of the tire and the separated tread/belt. destroyed the wheel well covering. 2002 yukon xl. tires had been installed in march 2008. when looking at the front passenger side tire, it had numerous large cracks from the tread extending into the sidewall. to avoid having another blowout/separation, quickly replaced that tire and returned both to the dealer where purchased. having the dealer contact cooper and inspect the rear 2 tires as well (visual inspection did not show the tread/sidewall cracks). *tr

After owning my 2002 gmc yukon xl, i noticed uneven tired tread wear at about the 5000 mile mark. when my vehicle was taken into the carriage motors company service department for my vehicle's 7500 service, i mentioned my concern for manner in which my tires were wearing. both the front and back tires had the same tire wear since they had been rotated at 5000 miles. the tread wears unevenly on the inside of both the front tires, causing excessive tire noise from inside the cabin and more importantly, the vehicle pulls from side to side. most noteably right after the tires are rotated. i have since complained on numerous occassions to carriage motors and each time was given the response that it is normal tire wear for a gmc yukon. second opinions were sought from different tire dealerships in the temecula area, with all stating that it is not normal. my concern is for my wife and three children, as my spouse is the primary driver of this vehicle. the vehilce handles very poorly on the freeway and most recently, having received some rain in our local area, i was alarmed at how poorly the vehilcle handled on the wet roads. a local tire company in my area stated that my tires on not contacting properly with the road, which results in poor handling. in addition, the carriage motor company stated the reason for the manner in which the tires wear for yukons was the design by gmc in an attempt to make a smoother ride for this vehicle. i am seeking the nhtsa assistance in this matter as i have exhausted all efforts with the carriage motors and gmc customer assistance. if your agency is unable to assist me please direct me to the appropriate agency that will provide assistance in this matter. dt

I bought a new 2002 yukon xl which came with firestone wilderness le tires including the spare. i have rotated all tires properly and according to the maintenance schedule, every three to five thousand miles. i have had the front end alignment check out, which was found to be perfectly in alignment. the tires have 24,000 miles on them. all four of my tires are defective with high/low spots on the outside and inside tread. the three center rows of tread are wearing perfectly correct and even. the tire shop and the dealership reccommends replacing all the tires because they are a safety hazard and could possibly cause me to have an accident at higher highway speeds.*ak
