VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Whilst driving on i-10 it was noted the indicated speed was less than posted. i accelerated , but the indicated speed did not increase. by the time i realized the speedometer was reading incorrectly i was zooming past other traffic. i was likely traveling 90 mph in the 70 mph zone. this was an extremely unsafe event. i took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told speedometer cluster failures were very common in 2003 and 2004 gm/gmc vehicles, but there was no recall. the dealer replaced the instrument cluster . he told me if he had a nickel for every one he replaced he would be a rich man. *ak

I have a 2004 gmc yukon with 46,000 miles and the speedometer has started sticking at random points on the gauge. sitting still with the key off the speedometer can read 10, 50 or even 70 mph. at the moment the problem appears to be intermittent, and i have researched this, and found it is a common problem with the chevrolet tahoe, the same truck as i have except labeled as a chevrolet . a replacement from gm is more than $500, including their installation and recalibrating. i find this to be very concerning for a car that is only 3 years old to have such a serious problem. *ak

The speedometer is stuck at 80 miles per hour. the process to fix the vehicle requires them to take the part off ship it to dallas or houston (min 3 days w/o vehicle). repairers have been behind (min 1 week w/o vehicle). according to my service provider they have 5 others waiting for the same type of worked to be performed. if there are 5 people waiting to have their speedometer repaired (at the same time) sounds like a consistent problem. i don't know how one sticks their speedometer. *jb
