POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)
09/18/2005118950511/21/1991
D4 light comes on and stays on for 10 minutes. transmission hunts for gears at cruising speeds without warning, often landing no gear, causing a scary scenario. a web search revealed thousands of complaints by 1989 to 1993 owners of that model honda accord who are having the same problem. it is supposedly a failure of the transmission computer. honda dealers have no safety or maintenance recall/bulletin on this issue. they offer to replace the tcm (guess that is the computer) for $570.00 plus labor! several hundreds of thousands of these years' models were sold and are on the road. if a computer failure puts the driver and the traffic at danger because the car chooses a different gear or no gear, the manufacturer should fix the damaged computer component or whatever the failed component. since such sheer numbers are involved the nhtsa should investigate the matter independently. *jb
