ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION

Tl*the contact owns a 1994 honda accord. the consumer stated the keys would come out of the ignition when the vehicle was turned off and in park or when the vehicle was turned off and placed in neutral and only comes out when he turned the key on the steering column to the lock position. there were no recalls for this failure. the vehicle was taken to an auto shop for a routine oil change and was placed in the neutral position. the service dealer stated that the key released out of the ignition and caused the vehicle to roll away. the vehicle struck another vehicle. the failure and current mileages were less than 170,000. updated 7/9/09 *cn updated 07/17/09.*jb

The car lost power while i was sitting at a red light. i thought it had stalled, and it took me a couple of minutes to get it restarted. while i was driving home a few minutes later, the car lost power while i was driving. again, i thought it had stalled, but i thought it odd the car would stall while driving at speeds around 45 mph. i had to coast on the momentum of the speed the car was traveling before it lost power. i had to maneuver across 2 lanes of busy and fast-moving traffic and barely made it to the right shoulder before the car stopped. i feel i only made it off the road because the driver of the pickup behind me realized something was wrong, and he straddled the lanes of traffic behind me, forcing traffic to slow down so i could get through. i feel a serious accident could have occurred had this driver not done what he did. again, it took me a couple of minutes to restart it. i made it home fine, and we took it to our mechanic, who searched the engine, tuned up the car, but found no reason why it would have stalled. when i drove it again, the problem occurred again, this time when i was waiting to turn left into my home driveway. i switched my hazard lights on, but i'm not sure the lights actually turned on, because it took the drivers behind me some time to realize that i wasn't going to be turning left after traffic cleared. this time, i noticed that all power to the dashboard indicators was gone, and that the car had not actually stalled as i had originally thought the first time the problem occurred. a return trip to the mechanic confirmed that the entire ignition control unit and the ignition coil was no longer functioning properly, and he replaced it. there have been no problems with the car since the module was replaced, and it's been a few months. we had the recurrent problems in the 2 weeks leading up to when we had the ignition control unit and ignition coil replaced on 9/22/06. *nm

While drving the vehicle, the engine just quits. there is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. the radio, heater fan, and brake lights still work. i was driving on the freeway in morning traffic going 70mph and the tachometer and speedometer went to zero and the engine quite. a second later the engine restarts. this happened twice on the freeway. i also have trouble running the car. it will start but not run. to have the engine continue to run the key needs to be forced forward. i needed to have my car towed and the tow truck driver attempted to start my car and told me he has seen this problem numerous times in honda's and acura's. he said the ignition switch is faulty.*ak

Traveling on highway at 65 mph in high speed lane, lost all power to car--had to be towed, distributor at fault--cost $682 to repair. since learned this is the achilles heel of hondas--not too happy to be in high speed lane and lose all power--dangerous.*ak

While interstate driving, car (engine) suddenly shuts down . noticed rpm drops to 0 at the instant of the shutdown. lost steering capability (steering wheel hard to turn in any direction), lost acceleration power. had to drift off to side of highway. luckily no traffic immediately behind. car towed to dealer. dealer determined ignitor coil, ignitor u and engine oil seal all failed. lost all oil from engine. dealer replaced coil ignitor, ignitor u, t-belts, oil seals, water pump, coolant and rubber, according to parts listing on invoice. damage amounted to $837.33. honda now recalling and repairing oil seal but will not reimburse for water pump, exterior belts or the two ignition/ignitor parts replaced. this was a major failure that could have resulted in death on the interstate. if honda recommends replacement of a part to prevent future failure as in the case of the water pump, then honda should reimburse for same. *ak

Faulty ignition switch on honda accord 1994 ex sedan. while drving the vehicle, the engine just quits. there is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits.when you finally coast to a stop and try to re-start, it immediately re-starts and runs okay.when the key is turned to 'start', the engine did start but as soon as you released the key to spring back to the 'run' position, the engine would quit. eventually, it would stay running but it quit reguarly after that. i am going to repalce the part by tomarrow becuase this is serious . the car stopped in the highway , the stering wheel stop because it is hydraulic and abs brake stoped working.

My 1994 honda accord has the safety defect present in 1998 honda accords (refer to nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000). i was aware of the defect about two years ago but didn't realize the accident potential until seeing an article in february 2004 consumer reports (page 11). i believe a recall and dealer repair might save a serious accident or loss of life. *jb

I own a 1994 honda accord. over the past month, while driving, the instrument panel would fail - almost as if the engine had been shut off. over time the symptoms became more frequency and the engine would also switch off. this failure caused the vehicle's accessories including power steering to stop functioning and almost resulted in an accident. i later learned that the problem is caused by a faulty ignition switch which though known to affect many honda accords does not cover the 1994 model year. replacement of the ignition switch, at my expense, has remedied the problem. *nlm

Starter failed once, and it made strange sound and failed to start first time and then after couple of times it started. this happened three times before the starter died. i got it replace from dealer with original part. after an year or so looks to be i am in trouble again with the same problem. also front right power window rattles and dealer mentioned it needs regulator ($330). numerous times the overhead light in the car fails. i am not sure is there any major problems with the electric system in the car itself or i am unlucky to have all. *ak
