This is a complaint added to a number of others on the odi website concerning repeated failures of the srs system in 1995 honda accords. i first had to change the srs control unit in january 1998, which was covered by the honda warranty. in august 2002, the srs control unit failed again, and i had to pay to replace it. the unit again failed in july 2009. in a phone call, american honda advised this was my responsibility. i believe this is honda's responsibility and a serious safety problem, as there is no way of knowing whether air bags will deploy in case of an accident. given the number of complaints filed with odi, there should be a recall. *tr

Regarding my 1995 honda accord v6 ex: last year, i went on a search for an older model honda accord to purchase for my son to use in the near future. i made a down payment on a 1996 4 cylinder sedan, only to find the srs light came on, and the anti- lock brake system automatically disabled as a result. the srs test gives vague results (as in - the air bags may..or may not..deploy. i cancelled my purchase. i looked at 3 other 95-96 accords and found they all had the srs/abs lights on. the owners told me they did not want to go to the expense quoted to replace the system, because they said most people don't care if it works or not. airbags? you're kidding. i researched and found it is so common, there entire chat groups on the subject and businesses built around the fault. there are even sites instructing owners how to bypass the honda problem, and how to disconnect the idiot lights, etc. i purchased the above mentioned accord from a trusted friend, and, of course the srs light and abs lights are on. 4 out of 4 honda accords. this one, a v6 ex. i decided to buy the 95 ex because i saw a recall for 95 honda accord srs online, and thought - at least they did something about it on this year model. now, after scouring the pdf docs, i find the recall does not include the v6. and i find there are srs recalls on later model hondas, too. the srs failure is obvious for many years of accords and other honda models. we either have to pay $700 - 1,000 to replace them or worry we will suffer the consequences. i'm sure the shear number of srs tests and srs replacements will more than prove out the widespread problem. the biggest problem is the fact that people do not pay that kind of money to have it fixed. it makes you wonder how many serious injuries have resulted due to faulty honda srs. this recall needs to be expanded. thank you for your time. if you can offer any new info on my srs, i would be grateful. *jb

When i turned on the ignition the airbag light came on. i took the car to honda and they said the computer component in the air bag system was defective. it would cost $600 to $800 dollars to repair/replace. i contacted honda three times and they would not repair the airbag system saying that all parts on the car wear out and have to be replaced and that is my responnsibility. i argued that something like a safety device in standby condition coulld not wear out since it was never used. they persist in saying all parts of a car wear out and have to be replaced. i need help. roy sutz nlm

The srs light came on when my wife was on a trip far from home. when she returned, i took the car to milton martin honda. they put it on the computer, but could find no fault code. they reset the srs light, but it came on again the next day. they had said that when this happened, they often had to replace the air bag computer. i checked the nhtsa web site and found that there had been a recall for 1995 honda accords for air bag problems (nhtsa item number sb041021). i also found a honda tsb on the problem (service bulletin number hon/a90). finally i found a large number of similar complaints in the nhtsa database by other owners of 1995 honda accords. consequently i called honda of america at 1-800-999-1099 and spoke to nicole royer at ext. 124157. she promised to call me back within 3 days with feedback about what honda proposed to do about my problem. she has thus far failed to call back 6 days later, and all i can reach is her voice mail when i attempt to call her. it is clear from the recall, the tsb, and the large volume of complaints that honda has a major problem with the air bags in the 1995 accord which they seem unwilling to deal with despite the fact that this is a critical safety-related component. i hope that nhtsa institutes an investigation and compels honda either to recall the 1995 accords for this problem or at least pay for repairs when the problem occurs. i own 3 hondas which i bought because of honda's outstanding reputation for reliability and honesty, but i am bitterly disappointed at their apparent lack of concern about this potentially very damaging problem. i would remind them and nhtsa of the ford/firestone case in which a known safety problem went unacknowledged until a number of accidents with injuries and fatalities occurred. surely honda would not wish to experience similar problems with their customers.

Srs indicator on at 65000, but unit was reset which cleared the problem. srs indicator back on at 134k. delear thinks that bad alternator may be masking the problem. alternator being replaced (500 dollars). if the srs unit cannot be reset then this will be another 500 dollars plus labor. there is a recall notice out but it seems to be for the 4 cyl accords only. logging this entry mainly to get the word out. possibly if enough of us report this as an issue we might be able to get some relief from honda (ya right).

Dt: the contact states the srs light is on, and according to the dealership this controls the air bags on the driver's side and passenger's side. she noticed this in may-05. the contact took the car in to the dealership in june-05. it will cost $350.00 to fix the problem. it is not covered under the warranty because honda told her this is normal wear and tear on the vehicle. the mileage on the car and the year of the car are also factors in determining the warranty coverage. the air bags never deployed. the car has never been in an accident.*ak

On november 12, 2004, i noticed the srs light came on and stay on the entire time that i drove the car. (it still does to this day.) on november 16, i took it to classic honda of san marcos, tx--dealer #208339--for a check up. they informed me that the srs control unit needs to be replaced. the vehicle is a 1995 honda accord station wagon, manufactured in january 1995. the mileage was 89,000 miles when the problem occurred. the owner's manual states when the car is 10 years old, have the dealer inspect the [srs] system. so the expectation is that the system should function normally for at least 10 years. the srs system is one of the safety equipment, much like the seat belt. i know honda has a lifetime warranty on the seat belt and the replacement muffler. i feel that the srs system should carry a lifetime warranty as well because it provides additional safety. i called the manufacturer on november 22, 2004 to report the problem and asked them to pay for the control unit replacement. they denied. i have done some research through the nhtsa website and found that just looking at the first and last five pages of the complaints shows that the srs indicator staying on has been quite common (i found 11 complaints). i found a complaint filed as recently as january 24, 2005. there was a recall notice 96v217000 out for replacing the srs control unit. was that recall out in september 1996, and what were the circumstances? *ak

My srs light has come on and when i had it checked by the mechanic i was told that the srs control unit had failed and needed replacing, to the tune of ~$500. i researched your recall data base and found that a recall was issued in sept of 1996 (96v217000). this recall replaced the srs control unit. when i called honda i was told that recall did not apply to my vehicle. my vin # is 1hgca5545ja045337. while researching this problem i have discovered there are a lot of these units failing on hondas and i was wondering if this recall should have covered a broader universe of vehicles.*ak
