Defect SummaryVehicle description: sedan, coupe and wagon passenger vehicles except the dx model and models with v6 engines. the factory installed air conditioner wire harness was improperly routed allowing some wires to rub against each other, eventually causing a short circuit.
Consequence SummaryThe short circuit canpossibly cause the underhood wireing to overheat and smoke, causing a fire in the engine compartment. a short circuit can also result in a blown fuse or dead battery.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the vehicles for proper routing of these wires. any harness improperly routed will be inspected for damage and the routing will be corrected. if any insulation is worn through and the copper wires are exposed, the harness will be replaced. dealers will also install plastic tubing to protect the harness.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin october 8, 1998.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

While driving, both tach and speed needles dropped to 0, engine died and had to switch off. sometimes, the car would start back up again. other times, the engine would die right after the engine starts. it sometimes would take about 15 minutes of switching the keys off/on before the engine would stay running. then after some distance, the engine would die without warning again.

1995 honda accord ex, automatic transmission: initially, dash lights do not light up when key is in run position. starter motor will turn over, but because there is no ignition current, engine will not start. non-ignition on related accessories (radio, powe windows) work fine. however, this occurs intermittently. eventually, on an occasion when the engine does start, after starting and running, the engine will die while the car is in motion. please see nhtsa campaign id # 02v120000 for 1997 and newer accords. ignition switch plate was replaced by dealer but problem has returned.

The replacement of the failing ignition distributor (engine light is on), which is essential part of the emission control system, is required on my 1995 honda accord wagon lx. in addition, there is a significant decrease to the mileage and speed sensor may need to be replaced. according to honda north america the extension of the emission warranty (tsb# 98-081) granted to all 1995-v6, 1996-all and 97-all accords, is not applicable to my year and model. since the same exact issues were reported for vehicles covered by extension of the emission warranty (tsb#98-081), honda should also extend this coverage to 1995 v-4 accords.*jb

I believe a faulty ignition switch is causing this and it is currently being recalled on models 1997 and newer. i would like to see this recall extended at least to the 1995 model. my car experiences the exact same problems. i'll be traveling along and the engine just quietly shuts down. i'm afraid of driving it for fear that the engine might quit when i try to pass another car or make a turn at an intersection. thank you for your attention to this. jason fritz. *ak

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - STARTER ASSEMBLY
05/10/2001106/01/1995
On thursday may 10, 2001 around 12:05 pm, the starter on our 1995 honda accord (@76,000 miles) engaged while no one or the key was in the car. myself and at least two other people witnessed the car climb a four inch curb and move approximately 35 ft with the parking brake applied. the car was stopped with foot brake. it started to smoke. the engine compartment hood was raised to find the starter and cables in flames. a hand held co2 fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire twice. the local fire department arrived and unhooked the battery. we had the car towed to rick woodson honda, peters creek road, roanoke, va. this car has never been wrecked. there has never been any work done on the starter. it has never failed to start nor has the starter system ever required checking. other than motor oil and a battery replaced on november 4, 1999, every maintenance part has come from honda. only a honda dealer or my husband has ever had the engine compartment hood up on this car. it has never required a jump-start nor has it jump started another vehicle. i have driven 95% of the miles accumulated on this car. this car was purchased from cleveland village honda, cleveland tennessee on june 24, 1995. the car had slightly over 6,000 miles on it and was supposed to have been driven by the service manager.*ak
