Six of the odi complaints are duplicative of honda complaints, as well as four of the crashes.the one injury occurred when a rollaway vehicle struck the exiting operator who had inadvertently parked the vehicle in an unsecured state (not in park, brake not engaged).honda identified the warranty claims from complaint descriptions that contended the interlock system failed to operate properly.honda presented the results of their investigation into interlock system failures at an october 16, 2003 meeting with odi in which honda identified a supplier and an engineering specification change for the ignition cylinder body (cb), a subcomponent of the ignition lock assembly.results from honda

Car suddenly shuts off on its own while driving; all electrical goes off except for check engine light, abs light, or none at all. happened 3 or 4 times, sometimes at freeway speed, car restarted from neutral a few minutes later. taken to honda dealer & diagnosed with a faulty transmission module, replaced for $450. yet the problem just recurred not long after that repair. this creates a serious road hazard & potential for crash & serious injury, as suddenly & without warning, the vehicle shuts down & cannot be controlled with any acceleration, power steering or normal braking. this vehicle has always been maintained meticulously, since new, per recommended schedule with honda dealerships. browsing the internet shows this to be an unusually common, serious & difficult to diagnose issue with hondas & acuras from ~1997-2002. *tr

My car experienced stalling at both highway speeds and slow speed operation. this of course led to a loss of throttle response and power steering, jeopardizing the safety of the vehicle. the smell of burning plastic and light smoke were also evident coming from the steering column during these events. this stalling had the exact same symptoms as if the key had been switched to the accessory position (i.e. power was lost to the dash and the engine shut off, but radio and other accessories stayed powered), indicating an electrical failure. the engine would turn over and catch when the key was put in the start position, but it would stall when the key returned to the on position. research indicated that these symptoms matched recall 02v120000 exactly. this recall called for the replacement of a faulty ignition switch. honda dealer and honda america both said the car had already been serviced under this recall and that they would only honor the recall if it was inspected at a dealer at owner expense. when the owner replaced the ignition switch the problem was rectified. the replaced part showed melted solder (that had melted off of the contact and into the outer casing of the switch) and melted plastic at the 1g1 terminal of the ignition switch, explaining the smoke event. a multi-meter also showed inconsistent continuity between the 1g1 terminal and the wiring harness when the switch was in the on position, matching the description of the prior recall and explaining the stalling. upon searching online forums and the nhtsa safety complaints database, it is evident that this problem is widespread in cars that have already been serviced under the recall. please investigate

My car underwent the ignition switch interlock recall in 2002. but this ignition switch was faulty and again in 2011, the switch failed. my car stalled a few times on the freeway and i was in great danger of being in a accident. the system was while driving the car, it would immediately cut off the engine and if i put it back in neutral and restart it would start fine. honda knew about the faulty switch replaced and now is recommending a new and improved version at the owners cost. i had to tow the car at my expense to a nearby mechanic and spend my money to fix this issue instead of honda fixing the faulty component

While braking, car just died (including dashboard electric) and then difficult to restart. after car started no further incident for a few days. next, while travelling on highway ~50mph at night, car unexpectedly died (no braking involved) and most, not all electric died (emergency flashers worked). no check engine light ever came on, before dashboard blanked out. ignition switch replaced in 2002 with national recall. mechanic at a loss. honda headquarters initially denied a problem existed. car again stalled a few times while braking to slow down or come to a stop, but assumed it might be bad gas. evening of 8/3/2011 travelling at ~50mph, car lost all electric 3 times (dashboard blanked out, but headlights worked), but immediately came back on (as though it blinked off), without having to restart it. after parking car, took key out of ignition- it was burning hot. this time when i called honda headquarters they said it might be part of a second recall, but car had to be checked by honda dealer service staff. if it was the ignition switch, it would be replaced free. it was explained to me that this was not part of a nationwide recall. result- ignition switch was bad and was replaced free. i was lucky i wasn't killed or seriously injured in a bad crash. please order a nationwide recall- it could save a life or lives.

On several occasions my car would not start. this would happen out of nowhere, sometimes it would start up after a few minutes and sometimes i would have to come back and get it. on one occasion the vehicle died while i was driving down the road. shortly after that i took it to a honda dealership to have it repaired. according to the dealership the ignition switch was the cause of the problem. i paid $233.27 for parts and labor. they also charged me to repair a few other things, in total i spent around $400.00. since then my brother purchased a 1999 honda accord and they started having the same problems. he found out that his car was part of a recall for the ignition switch and he took his car to the same dealership and they fixed it for free. i looked online and it seems that honda accords from 1997-2002 all have this common problem with the ignition switch failing. i believe my car should be included in the recall. and i believe i should be reimbursed for my expense in repairing the ignition switch.

I own a 1998 honda accord and i am experiencing issues where my car completely cuts off while driving. just recently, this past sunday to be exact, my car cut off 3 times in traffic while i was driving and i was almost rear ended by another vehicle. when my car shuts off, i lose all power and my dash board goes black (not 1 light is lit). i have to find a way to get out off traffic safely, so i can place my car in park and restart it. my car restarts with no problems but my car also dies/cuts off without any warning. i contacted honda today and was told that my car was not part of the ignition switch recall #02-031 but they said that it was part of the ignition switch interlock recall#03-088. i took my car to a repair shop and was told that the reason my car is cutting off while driving is because of a faulty ignition switch. i have not corrected the problem on my own because i feel that my car should be included in recall#02-031 and honda should absorb the cost.if all else fails i will have to pay for the repairs myself, to avoid being seriously hurt or injuring someone else. i feel unsafe driving my car because i am constant worrying about will my car cut off in traffic and cause a serious accident. i have no choice but to drive it at this point because it is my only means of transportation. please take this complaint into serious consideration because lives are being endangered. thank you

While driving, the engine got shut, steering got completely locked (can't do any left-right). the key light got on. all other lights were off. luckily there was no car behind my car. else i would have met severe accident. i stopped the car, restarted it, and reached home safely. i am scared now to drive anymore.

1998 honda accord stalls randomly while driving. dash lights flash for a brief instant at same time engine stalls and you can hear all the dashswitch relays firing. this car had a previous recall for defective ignition switch which would cause the car to stall suddenly and randomly while driving. this appeared to be the same issue. my car had the recall repair done a few years ago. the dealer told me that the replacement switch was failing. i paid over $245 for a 3rd ignition switch to be installed. this is a real safety concern as it can cause the engine to stall at any time while driving, including freeway driving and cause the potential for serious accidents to occur.

1998 honda accord vehicle just shuts off while driving does not want to restart and run. you have to let it sit then restart. found similar complaints on line checked with honda for ignition recalls. none on this vehicle but they said it sounds like the ignition switch. have had it replaced at my expense and hope it solved the problem.

My honda accord 1998 engine has stoped. when i was trying to start it was working but only till i loose switch in on position. so i couldn't to drive, because it not safe. in my understanding it is electrical switch (part of ignition switch) problem.

Engine cuts off at 60 mph. sometimes hard starting. honda said it was the ignition and replaced it. works fine now. 220k miles and still rolling.
05/20/200998000
My 1998 honda accord lx while driving would turn itself off. this occured repeatedly in city driving conditions and also on freeway driving conditions at 60 miles and above. when the engine would turn off, all dash lights including the green key security light would come on. the car would start up again if you turned the ignition key on, but at 60 miles an hour, or crossing a busy street and losing power that would not be the first thing one would do and the problem could have led into very serious accidents. given there was no code in the computer, the remedy was a hit and miss, my mechanic after he extensively test drove my car for a week found that on occasions when he was behind a red light when he touched the ingnition key, the car turned itself off. he then connected with a honda mechanic and he informed him that the ignition harness had a short. when he went to purchase a new harness, the supplier (accroding to what he told me) had shared with him that, oh yes, we always keep a supply of these harnesses, they go out a lot! given the danger this poses to this vehicle (it seems the model was produced for several years), there should be some warning to owners of this dangerous situation so that they can have a competent technician test their ignition harness and make sure there are no shorts.

1999 honda accord purchased as a used car in 2006. no problems up until recently when the car stalled several times. car would start up after stalling. took car into mechanic and was told that there maybe be a recall on the ignition switch which he thought was the problem. took car to honda dealer. they said that vin of car did not fall into recall for the ignition switch. they did find that the electrical portion of the ignition switch was bad and replaced it for 250.00. i explained that there was 2002 recall on this exact part and that the car should be considered under the recall but the technician said if the exact vin doesn't show up under the recall, they cannot fix the problem for free. *tr

Had the ignition switch replaced on our 1998 honda accord dx in 2002 via the nhtsa# 02v120000 recall at honda dealer. recently car stalled a few times and i discovered it was the ignition switch they replaced in 2002. i have since moved but called nearest honda dealer 60 miles away and asked if they would replace it and they refused, stating i did not have the extended warranty on vehicle. i feel since the part was on safety recall and it failed again; i should be reimbursed for the $150.00 i had to spend locally to repair problem so the vehicle could be driven safely. i also have the defective part that was replaced. thank you. *tr

My 1998 honda accord had the ignition switch recall performed with the recall came out. in november 2008, i started to notice starting issues. the dash light would flicker. after trying a couple of times the car would start. the car ran fine until around january 2009 when the car engine shut down without warning while stopping at a traffic light while driving home from work. the car was able to start back up immediately. one day while driving on the interstate in feb. 2009, the engine rpm started dropping and i could not accelerate to get more speed. i pulled into the emergency lane and stopped the car while the car was still on and in drive position. once i stopped, i could accelerate again. another time the dash lights flicker when i tried to start the car. the car did not start until after a couple of tries. each time, these problems occurred, i check if it was related to a certain condition (weather, temperature, etc). the problems happened randomly. after reading various complaints on this site and other sites, i started to try to reproduce the dash board flickering just by turning the car on but not starting the engine. i was able to reproduce the flickering by slowly turning the key toward the off position. i talked to honda headquarters and they told me the recall was already accomplished and the my car was out of warranty and they can not do anything about it. my car now 142250 miles. i talked with the dealership that i had the recall done and they said they could not do anything about it. i talked with another dealership where i get my maintenance done now. they said that it would be $100 to run a diagnostic on the car. i told them what would guarantee me that the problem would be found if the car was running fine at the time. i will be replacing the ignition switch on i figure out how to get to the wiring since honda will help with this issues. this switch is putting me in unsafe situations when driving. *tr

1998 honda accord ex 4-door: horn functions intermittently. while driving straight ahead (normal highway driving), horn usually does not work. isolated the malfunction and found that the steering shaft is only intermittently grounded, and the horn requires that ground in order to function. the horn (and the steering shaft ground) operates perfectly when the key is removed from the ignition switch. it appears that something in the ignition switch is causing the loss of ground. this year and model vehicle has already had two different recalls for different problems with the ignition switch. i know of at least 2 other people with identical symptoms, and one of them has already had an accident that would have been avoided with a working horn. as far as i know, this vehicle has never been in an accident. the failure has not been repaired as of yet. *tr

The car is a 1998 honda accord lx v-6 coupe w/ auto trans. and now has 65700 miles on it. while driving at low speeds the engine sometimes died. when this happened the steering became difficult and the brakes did not function well. most times after the car came to a complete stop i was able to restart it. other times when i tried to start the car, it would start and then immediately die. i would have to wait 2- 4 hours to start. at still other times trying to start it, it would just crank on the starter motor and not start at all. sometimes i would have to wait overnight to successfully start the car. these problems have been occurring since 2003, but with increasing frequency in the past 2 months. i have taken it to two different honda dealers. the first merely sprayed carp cleaner into the throttle body. the second kept the car for three days and replaced the main relay. last year, i had to have the alternator, which seized up replaced. *nm

Last spring (4/25/03) , i took my 1998 honda accord in to the dealer for brakes and while there, they fixed the ignition switch which had been recalled. ntil then, i had never had a problem starting my car. after the recall replacement, i now have starting problems! it seems that my car will crank normally but not turn over. it appears not to be getting fuel. the car will then start normally after an hour. i have had the car back to the dealer and they can not find anything wrong. i have had the battery and the alternator replaced but i still have this problem. strangely enough, it does not seem to happen in the cold weather, only on hot days. i am told by the dealer and private mechanics that they need to see it when it will not start in order to diagnose & fix the problem. as i have stated above, it will start after an hour or so, it will start before i can have iit towed to the dealer. i have 39,963 miles on this car and i am the original owner. i have never had any other problems with this car. my daughter's friend had the same year & model car and had the same starting problems. she got rid of the car. i do not want to do this.*ak

Please be advised that this has happened on multiple dates ranging from 1999-2012. i thought it was covered through nhtsa campaign id #: 98v018000 but i did not use the car enough to recognize a pattern until 2002. i think at that time, there may have been several thousand miles in 2002 when i began to use the car on more routine bases. there are two occasions that cause the issue to arise. while i am driving, the steering column will lock up causing an issue to shift from gear to gear and the mobility of the car. as the steering column would lock and cause the horn to malfunction and not make a sound and the limit my mobility to park the car. most streets that i drive are not on an incline but there have been few occasions, where if the car was on a slight incline, it would begin to roll. i would use the gear brakes to prevent an accident. another issue involves another path (occasion) which causes the steering wheel to lock which causes malfunctions in the horn and the interlocking incident. if i am driving and in the stages of parking my car, the steering column will lock affecting the ability for me to change gear and my ability to adequately mobility when park. this has occurred more frequently now but it has occurred in 1999. when i was advised of the interlock recall, i thought this was addressed. once this occurs, the car can only be unlocked when i drive when i press down of the hear charger, put the key in the slight covering the gear changer and move the steering wheel. between nhtsa campaign id #: 03v423000 and nhtsa campaign id #: 02v120000, i thought these issue was addressed. when i called honda today and spoke to [xxx] 800-999-1099 ext [xxx], the recall is associated with the vin soi wanted to make sure this was acknowledged for incidents for my car model & vin. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Had the ignition switch replaced on our 1998 honda accord dx in 2002 via the nhtsa# 02v120000 recall at honda dealer. recently car stalled a few times and i discovered it was the ignition switch they replaced in 2002. i have since moved but called nearest honda dealer 60 miles away and asked if they would replace it and they refused, stating i did not have the extended warranty on vehicle. i feel since the part was on safety recall and it failed again; i should be reimbursed for the $150.00 i had to spend locally to repair problem so the vehicle could be driven safely. i also have the defective part that was replaced. thank you. *tr

The ignition system fails in my 1998 honda accord. it has already been through the recall process for the same problem (03v423000). design problems were obviously not corrected. the recall appears to have replaced existing parts with new parts that are the same. car cuts out due to failure of ignition circuit to be completed. this can occur anywhere. it has happened driving down the road at 60 mph. sitting for 1 minute will sometimes correct the situation. jiggling the key will sometimes correct the situation. can result in dangerous situations in traffic. *tr

During the last 6 months i began having problems with my ignition locking up and car would not start & occasionally the car would stop running while in motion for no reason. the dash lights would all flash and then lock-up & die. i checked online and discovered there had been two recalls on my 98 honda accord lx, ignition switch and interlock. i phoned my local dealer, honda of ocala and they gave me an appt. for 10/20/06. they took a look at my car and then tried to sell me other services. i asked that they only fix the two recalls as scheduled. i waited for 1 1/2 hours and then was informed that the ignition switch was bad but i would have to pay $205.00 if i wanted it fixed because it had already been fixed. they couldn't tell me where or when this was. i refused to pay for a recall that was supposed to be done free of charge. after making me wait another 35 minutes my car was returned. i asked about the interlock recall, had it been fixed? he said no you'll have to call and make another appt. this appt. was for both recalls. they had my car for over 2 hrs and did nothing. i went home and called honda of america. i spoke with a rep that took my complaint. on 10/23 i was told by both reps that my only option was paying labor and getting it done at honda of ocala. i did not want to return to this specific dealership due to them treating me so miserably at the first appt. i have no records that this recall was ever fixed. my parents were the previous owner's and they don't either. regardless the part is obviously defective as this is not normal and should be covered in full, free of charge by this recall. *nm

I am a first hand owner of a 1998 honda accord ex coupe, the car has exhibited failure of the ignition switch since 2 months (march 2006) ago. one time i was driving about 65 miles at freeway 15, all the sudden the car just stall and lost all power; no dashboard lights, no air-conditioning and car engine stall. fortunately, there was not much traffic and i was on a downhill slope, so the car gained some momentum and i was able to pull it to the right shoulder. the same thing happened 3 times on local streets. when i took the car to my mechanic, he said the ignition switch failed. he told me that there was a recall on accord ignition switch and suggested that i call honda to find out the details. i didn't received any notice of recall regarding ignition switch failure. i did received one regarding ignition switch interlock operation (campaign id# 03v423000) which i had fixed. i call honda customer service today and they said that my vin# was not included in the recall of the ignition switch failure (campaign id# 02v120000), they will not pay for the cost of repair. but my car is exhibiting the exact behavior as describe in the recall (ignition switch failure caused car engine stall without warning while driving) the car was running fine before the incident happened, i believe this is a failure caused by manufacturing defect of the car and my car(vin#) should be included in the recall! *nm

Ignition switch failure this is the third ignition switch failure in this vehicle. honda replaced the first two but refuses to replace the third. service manager at dealer decided it was not the switch this time before even looking at the car. currently the car intermittently will not start. my independent mechanic got the car to act up and said it is definitely the ignition switch again. the first time it went the car died on the beltway at 65 mph. a big suv came up on my bumper. i was in the middle lane on a hill and could not get to the right because cars were passing me on the right. it was scary. *jb

This complaint is similar to investigation number pe 03-014. my wife's 1998 honda accord (4 cylinder with automatic transmission) rolled away from the spot where she had parked it. apparently she had left the vehicle in drive, but was able to remove the key from the ignition. when she returned from her errand, the car was no longer in the parking spot where she had left it. the car had rolled about 75 feet away, somehow managing to miss several other cars in the parking lot. thankfully, she and our baby weren't halfway out the car door when the car rolled away. i verified that the key can be removed with the shifter in drive. i took the car to the honda dealer here in colorado springs, and they indicated that there may be a mechanical problem in the ignition switch, but that it isn't covered by a warranty or recall. they also said it would be pretty expensive to fix since the electrical part of the ignition switch would need to be replaced as well as the mechanical part and the electrical part of the switch has an anti-theft feature that reads a computer chip in the key and that the system would have to be reprogrammed (including the remote controls for the doors...). the car had about 60,000 miles on it when we first noticed the problem. we don't recall the exact date of when it happened, but it was during the summer of 2002 when we first noticed the problem. thank you for your attention to this issue. michael brady (719) 668-4068. *ak

Reference complaint #10008215: nhtsa assisted in arranging a meeting with mike monell part/service director for norm reeves honda and eric catherine, district parts/service mgr. for american honda. the meeting took place on 3/24/03 and i explained the problems associated with my 2003 hybrid and my 1998 accord. the primary concern about the accord was the recall of electrical portion of the ignition switch. norm reeves had claimed to install a complete ignition switch on the instructions of american honda. after the alleged repair, the vehicle continued to stall. i proposed the following: (1) i buy the new part, (2) i witness the installation, and (3) i receive the part removed. mr. catherine promised to get back to me in a couple of days. this never happened. i bought a new part from another dealer and had it installed by an independent honda mechanic on 5/9/03. his opinion was that nothing had been done and that the part removed showed wear unlikely to occur in the short interval. he also stated that norm reeves could not have replaced the complete ignition, since that type of repair would have necessitated the re-programming of the keys. further, hondas written service bulletin 02-031 clearly instructs the dealer: center-punch a completion mark above the eighth character of the engine compartment vin. no such mark appears on my vehicle. in view of the evidence, i now believe that honda has engaged in a fraudulent implementation of the recall order. to further prove this allegation, i seek the assistance of nhtsa to determine the significance of the hand-written numbers on the electrical switch part. i have photographs of both the original part (35130-s84-a01) and the replacement part (35130-s84-305). further, i note that the raised plastic numbers on the parts differ by one digit. i believe that nhtsa should ascertain the significance of both the raised plastic numbers and the hand-written numbers to determine whether a new investigation should be initiated. *jb

On 8/30/02 i took my car to immke nw honda to have the ignition switch replaced due to a honda recall. i left the car at the dealer for the weekend because i went away on a trip. when i returned sunday night i had a voice-mail message from jason white saying that the ignition switch could not be replaced and that the car would not be touched because of the anti-theft device that was connected to it. he said that they could not reconnect the security system and would rather leave it alone until i agreed to incur the cost of reconnecting it. the following day i went to pick-up my car with the idea that i'd call honda about this. when i returned home, i found that the security system in my car had been disabled and the ignition swith was not replaced. i called immke about this and have called them several times since only to get people blaming others and nobody taking responsibility for the problem. the service dept. manager (terri nader)does not return my calls. i called honda and they say its their policy not to re-connect after market security systems. in other words, they don't fix the problems they cause after their recall.*ak

I have a 1998 honda accord ex coupe v6. i recently had the cable reel assembly fail on this vehicle (pn: 77900-s84-a22). this is the part that attaches the electrical connections from the steering wheel to the rest of the car. this part failed causing all of my switches on my steering wheel to fail and there is a high likelyhood that the airbag was inoperable also. the honda dealer told me that these parts almost allways fail on 1998 honda accords. this part is critical to the operation of the airbag, and this creates a safety issue. honda does not list a recall for this issue on this vehicle. someone should look into this issue to see if a recall needs to be made.*ak
