PE03014HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)04/15/200309/05/2003IGNITION-PARK INTERLOCK SYSTEM
Six of the odi complaints are duplicative of the manufacturer complaints, as well as four of the crashes.the noted injury occurred when a rollaway vehicle that had been inadvertently parked in neutral struck the exiting operator.the warranty claim count shown for other represents incidents where honda's analysis of claim detail indicates the interlock system malfunctioned.the interlock system utilizes a lever to block ignition key removal when the transmission is not in park.honda has identified a wear condition of the interlock lever that can cause the system to malfunction; when wear occurs the key can be removed from the ignition while the shifter is in a non-park position.honda documents indicate that a manufacturing process may be the cause of interlock lever wear, and that this process was revised in january of 2001.an engineering analysis will be opened to further investigate this concern and its scope.

On the date specified above up to the current date 11/14/2012 i [xxx]have had this 1998 honda accord ex for less than a year and i have had problems out of this car's take off speed. to further explain the car struggles to take off, and when it does and tries to shift, the shifting is either delayed, and or the vehicle shifts very rough. it is almost as thought the vehicle is leaping forward. there are even times when i try to take off after stopping in traffic, the car behaves as though it is in neutral when trying to shift from first gear to second gear. my engine light did not come on until later indicating that there was a malfunction somewhere. i pulled out my code reader and hooked it to the obd outlet on my car and it indicated, low torque shift solenoid circuit. i checked the internet to see if any other honda owners had this same issue with their honda accords, and it appears that i am not alone with having the same symptoms. it also appears that honda has had these problems with the craftsmanship of their transmissions on the accords from year models 1998-2002. however, so far from what i have researched on the web their has been no accidents or fires reported yet. i am urging the nhtsa or safercar.gov to immediately investigate this issue. this is a safety issue that i believe needs to be addressed. although my car is a 1998 model, their have been customers whom have had their vehicles have transmission failures with mileage as low as 56000. this type of mileage of 56000-117000 miles for a transmission to fail is not normal. especially if the vehicle has been very well maintained, with maintenance records to back it up to date. anyway, please investigate before someone gets seriously hurt or even killed. i don't want anyone or honda to suffer like firestone tires did a few years ago. come on honda, fix your product that you have been standing behind. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I bought the car from a dealership. and it was ok at first than check engines light came on and i got it checked out long story short the dealer replaced it. but i messed up my wrist bc of the jerk from the vehicle. and now a year and a half later my torque converter goes out again at 245,000 miles which means your transmission is out too. i been all over the web why hasn't nhtsa made honda recall their transmission when its effecting so many people. i'm now about to be out of a job, and home. i'm begging nhtsa do something about this 2000-2003 weren't the only year to have a defective transmission problem 1999 are to. i think there is no better proof than research. if u google transmission problem honda accord/odyssey 1998-2002 have bad issues with the torque converter code p0740. please resolve this issue transmission shouldn't go out after 50,000 miles. safety wise: this past week i almost hit to semi truck bc it jerked forward i could've died. and being on the highway n the middle is a dangerous situation when it you and your family. another issue is that people wanted to know the issues with the car they are buying carfax only stats recall. i prefer a recall like a thousands of other people but if you can't, at least make honda come up with a better solution a better transmission have them add a transmission filter. *tr

1998 honda accord complete automatic transmission failure at 91,150 miles. incident below resulted in near collision when my vehicle pulled out to merge into traffic and vehicle would not accelerate more than approximately 15 mph. other vehicle had to slam on brakes to avoid side collision. i have a 1998 honda accord lx, 4- door, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission. at approximately 91,000 miles, i noticed that the automatic transmission started to slip shifting from first gear into second gear, especially right after the vehicle was just started. this issue would get worse under medium to heavy acceleration. having had another 1997 honda accord lx, 2 door, automatic transmission, that failed at 66,000 miles, i suspected that the transmission was failing on this 1998 honda accord lx. the vehicle was taken to cottman transmission for evaluation, and the technician test drove the vehicle immediately after starting up the vehicle in the morning. the technician confirmed the severe slippage from first into second gear and ran diagnostic tests on all the electric components, including automatic transmission solenoids. upon completion and additional examination of the problem, the technician stated that the automatic transmission was failing, and required a total rebuild. once the honda accord automatic transmission was removed from the honda accord and taken apart, it was noted that the internal metal filter was plugged with metal savings, the clutch bands were burned, and an internal electric switch was defective. expect no help and/or compensation from honda corporation as pursing that route has been futile. it would seem that honda corporation had been over confident in the sale of hondas in the united states, that the quality of their product now suffers. *tr

At the approx miles stated above, my honda accord began to struggle shifting from first to second gear. it was as though the car was losing power. also at times the car not only struggle to get into first gear but when it shifted it would shift rough, and the car would plunge or gallop forward. i researched several websites and blogs just to see if any one else had experienced this same problem. as it turns out everyone has experienced the problem on the honda accord 1998-2002 models. so since this was not just me, i contacted honda headquarters about this issue to see if they would be or had issued a recall on this vehicle regarding the transmission. they stated they had not, however, i feel they need to because this is a hazard, and a major problem. when the car struggles to get into first gear while trying to get into traffic, the car can lose power, which can possibly cause someone to loose control of the vehicle. and as a consequence an accident may occur, resulting in serious injury or death. i ask that the nhtsa please immediately look into this issue. i have read blogs and complaints all over the web regarding honda and this problem with the honda accord transmission solenoid, dating back as far as 1990-2002. honda apparently has know about this problem, and has failed to be courteous about fixing it. although my car is old, i still feel honda should be held liable for a faulty part on the transmission. to continue where i left off with honda, i have talked to them 4 different times and in different months regarding this issue, it seems they are not interested in correcting it, unless they are forced to do so. the lady over the phone did not even offer any type of compensation for the repair. so now it seems it is all up to me as the consumer. nhtsa, again, please look into this immediately. *tr

The clutch master cylinder on this vehicle is defective. when the vehicle is stopped ,when the clutch is depressed and the car is placed in gear the clutch automatically engages and the car moves on its own . this can cause deadly consiquenses at a red light ,school crossing, railroad crossing , the master cylinder fails with usage ,one of the problem is honda doesn't have the parts to fix it! so here we are with a 5 year old car w 70000 miles in it and the factory doesn"t have any parts.

The catalytic converter failed but was under some special extended warranty so i didn't have to pay a cent. but, it failed, and i am not pleased. the second problem which is my major complaint is that i am being told that i will have to replace my transmission on a car that only has 83k miles on it! honda knows that this is a problem with 98 - 01 accord models, but only extended the warranty to 00-01 models. i believe honda should be force to do a recall! it is very dangerous to be driving in southern california i-5 with a car that doesn't shift properly. please help all us 98-99 honda accord owners.

My transmission went out (slipped in and out of gear lurching forward) at 81,000 miles even though i had maintained the car just as the manufacturer suggested at the honda dealership. after seeing many of the exact same problems from other honda owners of the v6 engine for years 1998-2002 on the internet, i confronted the dealer and asked them to contact american honda. i got them to give me a new (reconditioned/rebuilt) transmission and it did not cost me anything. unfortunately if the consumer is not informed and fairly direct, then you could end up paying what they wanted in the beginning which was $4,500 for a new transmission. from what i could tell on the internet, the best deal everyone else got was a transmission but they paid for the labor (around $500). i paid nothing, except being without a car for a week.

The engine completely blew out one day. i was on the way to work and there was an explosion under my hood. honda put in a re-built engine and i have had nothing but problems since then. a few months later...the paint gradually started to fade away on the roof. it has only gotten worse and will get much worse. it is a 1998 honda!! this stuff shouldn't be happening!

Speedometer is inaccurate at the 10% level which maufacturer says is within guidelines established by your agency altho could not provide me with hard copy, later dealer said inaccurate speddometer readings within dot standard and finally said it was a honda standard. inaccurate speedometer is dangerous and may lead to a serious accident. honda replaced it once. told me replacement might be as bad. and it was. so does honda have who knows how may accords out on the roads with 10% inaccurate readings on their speedometers? i believe that accuracy standard shoud exist for sppedometers but am at mercy of manufacturer who says they set the accuracy level only. this is a safety issue in my humble opinion. could you look into this for me and probabl thousands of other honda owners who do not have the faintest idea that their speedo are giving them false reasdings.

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

*tr

I have a 1998 honda accord. i have recently been noticing that it has been shifting rough or like it has lost power. i have been driving and after stops or attempting to merge into traffic the vehicle feels like it's lost power and then lunges forward. o also just got a check engine light with the error code for the torque converter. i have read this is a common problem and could cause someone to give the vehicle too much throttle do to the lack of power when the accelerator is depressed. and due to the delay in acceleration a person would not be able to tell. i have not repaired my vehicle but the dealer is saying to change the transmission. $3000.00.

1998 honda accord ex-v6. transmission failure. 1. i was driving on the highway and suddenly the transmission started to disengage and re-engage by itself and then locked the transmission. 2. before the failure, i started to notice the transmission slippage around 55,000 miles. i brought it to honda dealership at around 60,000 miles and they just replaced the transmission oil. however, the problem was just getting worse. 3. after the transmission locked up, i almost lost control, i have to put the transmission to neutral and had it towed to honda dealership. i was told that transmission was out and need to be replaced. the replacement transmission cost was about $3000 4. i just noticed that there were similar recall for honda and acura transmission. *tr

Have a 1998 honda accord. was driving slowly up a hill in congested traffic and the car acted like i had put it in neutral. at this time the car rpms jumped up and the car started rolling backwards almost rolling into a car behind me. the car then jumped into gear and lurched forward almost hitting the car in front of me. the car started to run fine after that but since it had first happened it has re-occurred a number of time, just not on a hill. the check engine light has come on and a reading of the code was a po740 which is a failure of the torque converter. i've checked on the web to see if anyone else has had this problem and i'm surprised to see that it seems to be a common problem with accord models from 98 to about 2002. there was no one hurt or damage to anything but i can see where it could really be a safety issue around uneven roads with slow moving traffic or, around mall type parking lots where there are usually a number of persons walking around and thru traffic. *tr

I drive a 1998 honda accord ex v6 with 140,000 miles. as of the end of december, 2009; the vehicle's gears would not engage when putting it into 'drive'. the car would roll forward for about 100-200 yds; if you tried to push on the accelerator it acted as if you were in neutral and the engine would just rev. after that, it would jump/jerk and kick into gear. i have 2 children, ages 2 & 7 that are in the car daily. i have been told by a honda dealer that w/o at $3,500 replacement of my transmission the vehicle will likely leave me stranded on the road. i am also scared to death when pulling out on a major road and my car won't go over 3-5 mph. i'm sitting crossways in traffic hoping that it will eventually kick into gear. i have come close to causing a few accidents b/c my car won't move. the honda transmission has a design flaw; yet honda won't cover any of the repairs and there is no recall. this is absolutely a safety issue and my car should not be on the road. *tr

My 1998 honda accord is having transmission problems. i have had it worked on numerous time with nothing actually fixing the problem. it was a huge waste of money and time. it has a hard time shifting. i was pulling out on to a road that went up hill and on coming traffic almost hit me because my car wouldn't go into gear. just in time it jerked into gear and i floored it getting out of the way just in time. the on coming car was extremely up set with me and i pulled over to the side of the road to gather myself. i had my transmission fluid changed at jiffy lube and about 2 weeks later the transmission began slipping. that event is what started it all. for all of the complains about the 1998 transmission problems i cant believe they don't see a safety issue. i could have easily cause a wreck that day. *tr

I own and drive a '98 honda accord ex 4-cylinder with automatic transmission. the transmission had been having a rough shift in the 2nd gear for about 1 year when driving the car from stationary to moving. but the car was running fine on the higher gears. i was able to drive on highways till few weeks ago. around the 15th of dec 2007 i suddenly started to have vibrations in the car and strange hitting noises came from the engine when driving on the highway. the car felt dragging on the highway (i270s) which panicked me and i have to give more gas to pull to safety. the car still rust, but i'm not using it for about a month now because of fear of getting into an accident because i have heard cases with similar transmission issues where the car down shifts to 2nd gear suddenly on a highway without any warning, which will lead to an accident with the car coming behind me. dealer says that to fix this problem, the transmission needs to be replaced with a cost of around $3200. i referred the case to american honda, but they refused to do anything to resolve this safety issue. the current mileage on my car is around 105000 but the problem started when it had around 93000 miles. the 90000 mile service was done at the right time and the transmission oil was changed at that time using genuine honda manufactured transmission oil. i also have changed engine oil regular and done all maintenance as per the schedules provided in the '98 honda accord manual. the car had been under professional care all through the time i owned. this transmission related issue is a real safety issue which was addressed in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 honda accords by voluntary recalls by honda motor corporation. honda had changed the transmissions on these cars to resolve this issue. but that recall needs to be extended to the 1998 model cars as well because the accord model had been completely redesigned in 1998 when, i believe, this problem had originally started. *tr

Last august got check engine light checked; car slippe d from 1st to 2nd gear and accelerate d badly. dealership didn?t find the problem. i had them do a transmission flush anyway . check engine light went away but came back on later. *ak around march 31, check engine light again, had me pay $600 something and still original problem not fixed or diagnosed april 7, 2007 went back spent close to $900, original problem still not solved a couple of days later, after almost getting in an accident twice because the car decides to not respond to acceleration and instead decelerate on the major highway. fearful of my life and that this wasn?t a safe car i took it back in to honda again and finally this time they diagnose the transmission problem and say i need a new one after i had almost gotten seriously injured and spent close to $1500 on repair that weren?t really the main issue. i am a college student, i had to borrow part of the money from family to meet up to that $1500 and now i don?t have $4000 which is the quote for the transmission. i?ve always heard good things from honda about service and reliability. researching my problem on the internet i come across countless issues with the same 1998 honda transmissions. seems like a defect in the design of these transmissions and honda should take full responsibility in poor workmanship and recall these transmissions. i shouldn't have to pay close to $4000 for something that shouldn't happen in the first place seeing that it is a very common and widespread issue with this model year transmission. they should replace them free of charge because it is very unsafe to drive.

I bought my 1998 honda at the san francisco honda dealership in san francisco and did all of my maintenance work at their shop. it has 70,000 miles on it and has had no serious problems. on sunday i was crossing the bay bridge from oakland into the city and the engine light went on and the engine revved like i was in a drag car race and lurched forward and lost power and then accelerated violently all the way across the bridge. i literally almost got rear ended a few times and i am lucky to be alive! i was able to get my car to the dealership and they told me they had to charge me a $140 non-refundable diagnostic fee to determine what was wrong but they suspected it was the transmission. i got a call the next day letting me know the transmission was slipping and that it would need to be replaced at a cost of $5,000 parts and labor and they would have to order the transmission and would probably take 2 weeks to even get it? the warranty i had purchased had,of course, expired and no matter how much i tried to get a reason for this happening they just said it happens. so after spending $17,000+ on a car and maintaining it i now have a dangerous and expensive lemon. i paid my $140 blood money and got my car out of there and deciding what to do next? *jb

During the last 6 months i began having problems with my ignition locking up and car would not start & occasionally the car would stop running while in motion for no reason. the dash lights would all flash and then lock-up & die. i checked online and discovered there had been two recalls on my 98 honda accord lx, ignition switch and interlock. i phoned my local dealer, honda of ocala and they gave me an appt. for 10/20/06. they took a look at my car and then tried to sell me other services. i asked that they only fix the two recalls as scheduled. i waited for 1 1/2 hours and then was informed that the ignition switch was bad but i would have to pay $205.00 if i wanted it fixed because it had already been fixed. they couldn't tell me where or when this was. i refused to pay for a recall that was supposed to be done free of charge. after making me wait another 35 minutes my car was returned. i asked about the interlock recall, had it been fixed? he said no you'll have to call and make another appt. this appt. was for both recalls. they had my car for over 2 hrs and did nothing. i went home and called honda of america. i spoke with a rep that took my complaint. on 10/23 i was told by both reps that my only option was paying labor and getting it done at honda of ocala. i did not want to return to this specific dealership due to them treating me so miserably at the first appt. i have no records that this recall was ever fixed. my parents were the previous owner's and they don't either. regardless the part is obviously defective as this is not normal and should be covered in full, free of charge by this recall. *nm

I am a owner of 1998 honda accord and have just started having problems with my transmission knocking, clicking when i change gears, and it jumps out of gear as i am going down a hill. i did some research and found out that thousands of people are having the same issue. when i took it to the dealer they even was aware of the situation with the faulty transmission that they have been putting in people cars, but act like it is not a big deal. you think you are buying quality when you buy a honda, but that is not the case. i hope no one gets killed before they take action. if i have an accident while driving with my kids in the car and it locks up, i will be moving on up to the next step because i don't understand why they would not stand behind their faulty junk and not risk some being hurt or even killed. *jb

The automatic transmission in my car started with hesitation during cold starts as described by numerous other honda 98 accords. it would get out of park and into 1st gear just fine, but when getting out of 1st and into 2nd, the rpms would just shoot up and the transmission would catch the 2nd gear 2-5 seconds later. in those 2-5 seconds, there would be no power transferred to the front wheels. the car is so jerky that sometimes i spin out on my front tires. the problem had been looked at by honda, but they wanted $5,000 for the repair; the entire value of the car. we took it to aamco and they did the repair for 2,200. we've been into their shop twice now in their 1 year warranty, but the hesitation has come back. the car has only 82,000 miles on it and i don't drive it hard at all. something is definitely wrong with these units and something has to be done. *nm

 (1) driving from pennsylvania to ocean city, maryland for vacation and the check light came on when we were almost there. we pulled over on side of road and checked fluids and car and everything appeared to be okay until we could make it to garage. started driving again in 4th gear and transmission started to slip and car started to downshift and rpm's went up. (2) let car sit and then tried to drive again in 3rd and 4th gears but same problem kept occuring. then we put it in 2nd gear and that worked fine. we drove in 2nd gear going slow in the middle of a place we did not know and barely made it to the beach where my car sat the whole time and we could not drive anywhere. we had to have the car towed from ocean city to harrisburg, pa (about a 4 hour drive) (3) after talking with a honda certified technician and others we determined it was the tranmission going out. my car is still sitting and i am trying to figure out what i am going to do considering a new transmission costs 3 to 4 thousand dollars as i was told by honda. this is great considering i have only had my car for 2 years and still have 3 years to pay on it and it only has 86,000 miles on it.

I have a 1998 honda accord with transmission problems.. after startin the car in the morning as i drive down the street the transmission revs higher then normal when shifting from first to second (driving normaly) like it suppose to shift at 3000 rpm but when it gets to 3k it shifts but then the rpm's just climb for 1k more then the car just lags a lil as it goes into second after the car is warmed up that problem disapears. the other problem is when slowin down to make a turn and if no cars are comin i gently step on the gas to go (not completly stoped) the transmission slipps and then stutters till 2k rpm then it cathes and launches the car forward. i have talked to the honda dealership and they wont do anythin and want to charge me 4k for a new transmission. i read of several other people are having this problem.. *ak

I have a 1998 honda accord v6 with 103000 miles on it and suspected problems with the transmission since 93000 miles. the transmission slips at 20, 30, and 40 mph. i called the honda corp in ca and told them my honda accord ex v6 transmission was having problem and they told me to take it to a honda dealer to check it before i can make a claim on it. the honda dealer looked at it said i need a new transmission and there will be a $90 fee. the dealer and i called the honda corp to put in a claim and he explained that i have completed all recommended maintenance schedule and a day later the honda corp called the dealer and denied to assist in any way with my claim. i did not even receive a phone call back from the honda corp. the dealer called me to tell me the news and they gave me a transmission for over $4200. i call the honda corp and spoke with kevin brown and he said can not do anything to help and sorry your case it closed. how is my case closed only after one day of evaluation. kevin brown also said that the honda corp has assisted other people with 98 v6 accords with more miles than i have, but he said those cases were different. how are other cases so different when i have taken good care of my car. after reading other websites and forums, i can see this is a more common problem then i thought and now i have read over 100 complaints with honda accord v6 98 and 99 transmissions on the site. some action needs to be taken now!!!!!!!!!*ak the consumer disputes nhtsa's assessment of the 1998 honda accords transmission failures. the consumer found several issues which were very similar to his vehicle. the consumer requested a replacement transmission. *sc *jb

My 1998 honda accord's maintenance has always been maintained regularly and serviced at honda. i only have 49,000 actual miles on my 98 honda. the vehicle will lunge when going from reverse to drive. also, when at a complete stop and then begin to accelerate, the car will lunge. furthermore, when accelerating at a low speed, the vehicle will seem as though it is in neutral. it will not accelerate. i have to release the gas pedal and keep pressing and releasing the gas pedal until the gear will move. honda has now informed me that i need a new transmission. can you believe this; a new transmission on a vehicle with only 49,000 miles? honda has agreed to replace my transmission for no charge of the transmission, but i have to pay for the labor costs. honda obviously knows there is a huge problem with these transmissions, why should i be responsible for the labor costs?i hope i'm not going to get the same faulty transmission replaced in my honda. this website contains a lot of complaints for a problem that could be very dangerous and should be taken seriously. hopefully, and in the near future, there will be an investigation into this serious problem before there is fatalities. *jb

Heard thumping type noise in 1998 honda accord with approximately 58,000 miles. took vehicle to honda dealer where all routine maintenance had been performed. originally told that wheel bearing had failed but then informed that bearing in transmission had failed and that transmission would have to be replaced at owner's expense despite the vehicle's impeccable service records, low miles, and excellent condition. remanufactured honda transmission was installed at owner's expense, but the premature transmission failure rate associated with this vehicle needs to be addressed and those owners affected by this failure deserve full reimbursement from honda.

I was driving to la for business. along the freeway, i heard what sounded like an increase in wind noise that got louder, and i realized it was a mechanical problem. by the time i reached la, it was a gearing noise that sounded like it was the transmission of my 98 honda accord. i stopped by the gas station and checked the auto transmission fluid, it was full and there were no lights on the dash. later, the car would only go to 1st and 2nd gear. i brought it to the local aamco, where they told me it was a transmission failure. this was unbelievable to me since the car had only 93k miles - my toyota's ran well over150k easy. i contacted honda motors, i describe the situation to darcel (4/19/04) who told me to bring it to their local deale ($100). then, honda motors took one week to assign to a person who neglected to call the dealer, i had to call the dealer to call david. in addition, david humbray, 800-999-1009, ext 118128, neglected to read the intake information that i gave to darcel. two weeks later, still no action. david finally called and asked for all the oil change and other maintenance records. given the fact that i bought the car used and performed the oil changes myself, information i gave to darcel during the intake, i don't have all the records. my argument is that there is a track record of 98 honda accord auto transmission failures which seems to indicate a manufacturer defect - this site, there are 133 complaints compared to about 8 for a 98 toyota camry. honda actually extended the warranty of 2000-2001 honda accords with auto transmissions to 100k. i was just asking for the same. but the run around that honda motors gave me was ridiculous and added insult. i ended up payng $100 just to file a complaint. the final result is that i took the car back and had it repaired. it is now for sale and i am never going to buy another honda product - so much for honda relaibility and quality.

I own a 1998 honda accord (automatic transmission, v6, 4dr) with a mileage of 120k miles. i bought it when 110k , prior to which it was a lease car with proper maintainance history. over the last couple of weeks i noticed i was having a problem with delayed and hard shifting of gears especially at lower speeds . honda dealer checked and replaced transmission fluid. this did not help and a week later the engine check light had come on. a private transmission service advisor run computer diagnostics on it and came up with a diagnosis code of p740 and po230. they could not pinpoint the exact fault. at this point the vehicle was lunging forward whenever it came to a stop and it would have a trouble changing gears (especially the second gear). though the vehicle is in drivable condition it seems like a big safety hazard and a disaster waiting to happen. when i took the vehicle to a honda dealer who recommended that i replace the entire transmission at a cost of about $5600+labor. given otherwise extremely good condition of my vehicle i can only attribute this problem to a manufacturing defect. when i did some research i found out that there are hundreds of 98 accord owners who have been facing similar problems with their transmission. i am expecting honda to take responsibility since many hondas experience a similar fate and the honda service who changed the oil the first time could have tried harder before more damage may be done. i am currently not using this vehicle much given the obvious safety issues. *ak

1998 honda accord ex-v6 needs new transmission, 108,000 miles - problem since 86,000. seems that quite a few consumers have the same issue with this model; however, american honda has ignored the complaints of 1998-1999 owners with transmission problems. fortunately, for the 2000-2001 owners got a recall. the problem with the transmission is the same in the 1998-1999 models. it's not fair that we have to pay for this ourselves when there is an obvious problem (look at the number of complaints). also, honda never sent me any recall or service notices for other problems such as the fuel float, egr problem, or this transmission problem. this is my second honda - first i owned for 17 years, and now this? i am very upset.*ak

My 1998 honda accord with 61000 miles on its automatic transmission has joined the growing population of accords with failed carrier bearings in the final drive (transmission). i have had all of my service work done at the service shop where my son is employed as a mechanic. thus when i discovered the transmission fluid leak i took the car in to my mechanic for what i thought would be a seal replacement, only to be hit with the horrific news that it is going to cost me $2500-$3000 to fix the failed carrier bearings in the final drive! i've called the dealership that i purchased the car from (klein honda in everett wa.) and was told by trevor in the service department that they are experiencing this problem with the v-6 engines, but not the 4 cylinders (mine). when i asked him to help me this the expense he recommended that i contact honda customer care and wished me luck since i hadn't had any of my services conducted with a dealership. all of this took place within the last week, so my call to honda customer care will occur on 2/9/04. if i don't get anywhere with them i do plan on turning this in to the better business bureau and everyplace else i can find to lodge complaints with. with the research i have done over the internet i have found that this a common problem that needs to be recognized by a honda recall action! *ak

We took my 1998 accord ex in for regular service (90,000 miles) and to have the interlock switch recall done. when we picked up the car, the dealer told us the transmission was leaking and needed to be replaced. i've never had a problem with the transmission - no leaks in the garage, no strange shifting problems. we declined the service, but the dealer called and said our re-manufactured trans was in and since i had the extended warranty would be replaced at no charge (incl. rental car). i was suspicious that they would order the part and push the issue so strongly, so i did some research. on www.accordforums.com i found that others had been having transmission problems with this car. this transmission can suddenly fail due to a problem with a bearing (in fact, the service write-up states trans fluid leak, trans may fail due to differential bearing going out causing fluid to leak). i thought this was warranty fraud by the dealer, but apparently they know about this potential transmission problem. they aren't clearly explaining the problem to owners, which is what makes the issue seem suspect. in fact, when we picked up our car, the dealer was explaining the exact same problem to the person in line before us (which is why we got suspicious). it seems that honda has a problem that they don't want to tell vehicle owners about, but their dealers are pushing to fix it anyway. of course, they originally quoted us $1,600 to $5,000 for the repairs. after we told them no, we were informed it would be completed at no cost to us. sounds like a stealth recall to me. (they told us it would be free because we have the extended warranty with no deductible through honda care. i don't know how much i believe that either.) we're having the work done today now that i know what the potential problems are. i think others need to be informed of this issue so no one gets killed or injured if their transmission fails because they couldn't pay for this work. *jb

My 1998 honda accord (automatic transmission) has a mileage of only about 50,000 miles. over the last couple of months i noticed that the engine check light had come on and i was having a problem with delayed and hard shifting of gears especially at lower speeds . the engine check came up with a diagnosis code of p740. the service advisor also detected leaking transmission fluid and he recommended that i fix the seals and drive it around for some time. even after the seals were replaced i still found that the vehicle was lunging forward whenever it came to a stop and it would have a trouble changing gears (especially the second gear). though the vehicle is in drivable condition it seems like a big safety hazard and a disaster waiting to happen. i took the vehicle to a honda dealer who recommended that i replace the entire transmission at a cost of about $4000. given the low mileage and otherwise good condition of my vehicle i can only attribute this problem to a manufacturing defect. when i did some research i found out that there are a number of 98 accord owners who have been facing similar problems with their transmission. i have sent a fax to honda of america with a detailed description of this problem about a month ago but have not heard any response. i am expecting honda to take a greater responsibility in understanding and rectifying customer complaints with such serious safety implications. however that has not happened so far. i am currently not using this vehicle much given the obvious safety issues. *la

I have a 1998 accord ex, only 75000 miles. at first i heard noices under the vehicle at low speed. later i notice my transmission fluid leaks and then the noice got louder. the gear seems to slip and not shifting properly when accellerating and decelerating, this occurred more especially at cold start. i then brought the car to my family mechanic and was told that the my transmission need to be rebuilt, that i have a broken bearing which caused the fluid to leak and making all the noices. later he told me that one of the solenoid shift valve was bad in which caused the transmission to shift out of the ordinary and would not shift up and down at low gear per engine rotational speed (rpm). he told me that if i had driven this vehicle longer it would cost me a fortune to replaced the transmission. if this is the problem with honda, why it's not resolving this issue with a recall. i am so skeptical of buying another honda vehicle. my last 1993 toyota 4runner did not have any problem at 189,000 miles. if yall out there know any info, please let me know. thanks. *ak

In 2002, we began having problems with the axle seals leaking on our 1998 honda accord. we have always followed honda's recommended maintenance schedule, and thus took the car to the local dealership. they have seen the car for this problem 3 times, replacing the seals at least once. they now advise us that by diagnosing the symptoms (they cannot dissemble the transmission) they feel the leaking is due to worn differential bearings and the only solution is a new transmission. we have reported to honda north american who advises they can do nothing as this is a maintenance problem. if so, why wasn't this caught during one of the many visits to the dealership? when the problems began, this car only had 75,000 miles on it. with the leak, there has also been clunking and slopping shifting, almost since the first day we owned the car. *jb

Driving around normally, automatic transmission will clunk and jerk going into and out of 2nd gear. drive it a little harder, it yanks and bucks the car. during normal operation, when you came to a stop (when the transmission is trying to go back to 1st when decelerating), the transmission will fight the brakes and jerk the car forward. not only is this an immediate danger, but it is a degenerating problem that will eventually cause a catastrophic transmission failure, creating a safety hazard at any vehicle speed. other 1998 honda accord v6-coupe owners and even dealers have recognized this as a widespread problem with this specific component. http://honda-acura.net/forum/forum12/html/008731.html*ak

After approximately 2 weeks of owning my car i began to hear a whinning sound when i would take my foot of of the gas. this noise got progressively louder. i would like to know if other consumers have reported any problems with there new car and the tranmission and if so will there be a recall. honda was very good about fixing my car and i have no problems with the service but i am concerned about just purchasing a car and having something major like this occur

This complaint is similar to investigation number pe 03-014. my wife's 1998 honda accord (4 cylinder with automatic transmission) rolled away from the spot where she had parked it. apparently she had left the vehicle in drive, but was able to remove the key from the ignition. when she returned from her errand, the car was no longer in the parking spot where she had left it. the car had rolled about 75 feet away, somehow managing to miss several other cars in the parking lot. thankfully, she and our baby weren't halfway out the car door when the car rolled away. i verified that the key can be removed with the shifter in drive. i took the car to the honda dealer here in colorado springs, and they indicated that there may be a mechanical problem in the ignition switch, but that it isn't covered by a warranty or recall. they also said it would be pretty expensive to fix since the electrical part of the ignition switch would need to be replaced as well as the mechanical part and the electrical part of the switch has an anti-theft feature that reads a computer chip in the key and that the system would have to be reprogrammed (including the remote controls for the doors...). the car had about 60,000 miles on it when we first noticed the problem. we don't recall the exact date of when it happened, but it was during the summer of 2002 when we first noticed the problem. thank you for your attention to this issue. michael brady (719) 668-4068. *ak

Please be advised that this has happened on multiple dates ranging from 1999-2012. i thought it was covered through nhtsa campaign id #: 98v018000 but i did not use the car enough to recognize a pattern until 2002. i think at that time, there may have been several thousand miles in 2002 when i began to use the car on more routine bases. there are two occasions that cause the issue to arise. while i am driving, the steering column will lock up causing an issue to shift from gear to gear and the mobility of the car. as the steering column would lock and cause the horn to malfunction and not make a sound and the limit my mobility to park the car. most streets that i drive are not on an incline but there have been few occasions, where if the car was on a slight incline, it would begin to roll. i would use the gear brakes to prevent an accident. another issue involves another path (occasion) which causes the steering wheel to lock which causes malfunctions in the horn and the interlocking incident. if i am driving and in the stages of parking my car, the steering column will lock affecting the ability for me to change gear and my ability to adequately mobility when park. this has occurred more frequently now but it has occurred in 1999. when i was advised of the interlock recall, i thought this was addressed. once this occurs, the car can only be unlocked when i drive when i press down of the hear charger, put the key in the slight covering the gear changer and move the steering wheel. between nhtsa campaign id #: 03v423000 and nhtsa campaign id #: 02v120000, i thought these issue was addressed. when i called honda today and spoke to [xxx] 800-999-1099 ext [xxx], the recall is associated with the vin soi wanted to make sure this was acknowledged for incidents for my car model & vin. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The subject vehicle was parked in my driveway, i put the vehicle in park or so i thought and removed the keys from the ignition to go inside my home. about a half hour later i was contacted by my neighbor who told me that my vehicle had rolled down my driveway and across the street. he stated that the vehicle narrowly missed him before striking his brick mailbox structure and destroying it. i told him i couldn't understand how the vehicle could have rolled backwards as i had put it in park and removed my keys. upon further investigation i came to realize that the vehicle was actually in neutral. i contacted the honda regarding my concern about being able to remove the key from the ignition when the vehicle was in neutral not park. the dealership informed me that i should not have been able to remove the keys unless the car was in park. they indicated that the vehicle was out of warranty and that they would be more than happy to look into the problem at my expense. i told them that i didn't believe that safety features should ever be out of warranty. i am reporting this to you because i am concerned that possibly there are other vehicles out there with the same problem. this could certainly end up getting someone hurt or killed.*ak

 (1) my 1998 honda accord (v6 coupe) began jerking and failing to accelerate. after repeated occurrence of this, i took my car to the honda dealership to identify the problem (2) it was determined that transmission, specifically, the torque converter failed and needed to be replaced. (3) the transmission was replaced with a refurbished transmission. *tr

At 66,000 miles the transmission began to slip and shift gears roughly. when i put the car in reverse it would clunk. then as i accelerated i would have to let off the gas so it could shift each gear. i took it to a midas shop for a transmission service - new filter/flush, etc. they would not do anything because it was leaking fluid. another mechanic told me i needed two new axles and axle seals to fix the leak. by that time the check engine indicato was on so i wanted honda to look at it since i had researched the problem and found many instances of transmission failure at low miles. honda cars of columbia, sc said i needed a new transmission. the computer diagnostic code was po740 torque converter failure. a honda accord with only 66,000 miles should not need a new transmission. i am aware that honda recalled 2000 and 2001 transmissions but not 1998,1999 or 2002 even though they are the same transmissions. honda customer relations' good will assistance said they would not replace it since i did not purchase the car from a certified honda dealer or purchase an extended warranty. the fact that they have good will assistance shows that they know they have problems with their cars. they have replaced other owners transmissions, why not mine?*ak

With clutch pressed down while car in gear the transmission would start to engage. problem was occasional at the beginning, then worsened to the point vehicle was undrivable. (1 year period) took to local dealership twice but they were clueless to any cause. vehicle would often stall in stop and go traffic and at any lights. if clutch was pressed down for more than 5 seconds while in gear the hydrolics would fail and kill the engine. slave cylinder, clutch hydrolics eventually failed. dealership replaced slave cylinder and line for over $500, clutch now operates fine. dealership had to replace with modified honda parts since original slave and line replacement parts were defective. contacted american honda for relief do to faulty design/parts but refused due to ultimate failure occurring outside warranty period. *ak

About 4 months after the purchase of the car, the clutch started making some loud squeeks while pressing or releasing the clutch. the squeek got louder as the traffic got heavier. while this was occuring the clutch becomes hard and difficult to control (too much release or too little). i took the car to the nearest dealership (honda world, westminster) and told them. they said it was the master cylinder and at this moment there was no replacement. i waited about 2 months then finally in august '98 it was replaced. i left for a trip to san francisco and by the time i got to my destination it was already occuring again. while driving in the city and going up steep hills it became difficult to calculate the release in the clutch because it was not smooth- it felt like it was rubbing against something else, i had to use the emergency brake. i took it back to the dealership as soon as i came back. at this moment they told me that it was a defect and they had no solutions and that i could only wait. after waiting for awhile i called american honda and told my problem. they said they were awared but they could not do anything about it at this time. they promised to call me to keep me inform of the situation which they have been. in one of the phone calls i was told that they had a part but it was only temporary and it would not solve the problem permanently. at this moment other things have come out - the driver's side door lock gives me electrical shocks while locking and unlocking the door and these are not minor shocks. also sometimes the brakes squeak while pressing - it happened a little bit when i got it but i thought maybe because it was new. i don't want to be stuck with a car with these many problems - it was new and i have followed all the schedule maintance, all the help given it greatly appreciated it, thank you...
