I was driving on the interstate. my car started trying to go out on me like it wasn't getting the fuel it needed or something. i was going 65mph and then also when i stop at a light it tries to idle out or it does go out.

Car has intermittent stalling issues while driving. car has been serviced in leesburg honda, only known thru carfax report. leesburg honda could not verify if ignition switch was repaired from recall status. verification came from charlottesville brown's honda that switch was replaced but not by who. told if key was shook while running and car stalled then it was ignition switch. car still persists intermittently in shutting off with no warning signs. sometimes, after stall, it takes several turns of key to finally get car started. stalling can happen at any time and has in fast lanes of highways making car a little hard to steer of the road. only hazard lights work to send warning sign of car trouble.

My honda1999 barley has 79,000 on it, im second owner. i bought it when it had only 37,000 mil. on it. the car is already having transmission problems. it jerks when driving and coming to a stop, like a pop jerky feel. my cooling system had problem in 2010 oil going into my radiator. and know i have electrical problem. the car at times would go off. 79,000 i cant believe it. you would think this my car was a ford with their older modules. known to have engine problems after 70,000. this is crazy. i have all papers from first owner, never realized till reaching the chaos of my engine. that my car as well was a recall. i have the documents.

My wife was in drive-thru at mcdonald's when the engine died suddenly. she was able to started back up right away by turning the ignition off and on to crank the engine. later around 1pm on the same day, while driving on hwy 101 at 65 mph, the engine died suddenly, the 'key in ignition warning' came on that warns the driver not to forget to take the key out before leaving the vehicle. the car coasted with engine dead just a short distance and the engine started up again. the car ran fine after that until my wife got home. i googled '1999 honda accord engine shut off while driving' and found a dozen other drivers had posted about the similar problem with their honda accord. i found that the ignition switch is the cause of engine shut-off and there's honda recall on them. the car had a problem with the ignition switch in november 2006 at 135,500 miles. while driving on the freeway, smoke came out of the steering column and the car started jerking. the ignition switch was replaced at a dealer after having the car towed there.

Over the last week i have been experiencing the car suddenly turning off....no rpm's, no speed...while i am still in drive (automatic transmission). in viewing various websites, this is now becoming a common occurrence...and it extremely dangerous. although headlights still work, power steering is no longer available...so i must hurriedly shift into n to glide to the side of the road. the car does not restart right away. this has occurred at intersections, on the highway (at 70 mph) and while going 20 mph. there was a recall issued on the ignition for this type of problem in/around 2002-2003. i received this late...but did go to the dealer and have it replaced in 2009 (honda recall #02v120000). after experiencing this problem recently, i have gone online to see countless numbers of other honda accord owners who have been experiencing exactly the same problems....even after having the recall filled. evidently, the replacement part has been failing...or it was not the fix to begin with. this has was a very popular model..and there are sure to be hundreds of thousands of these on the road...about to run into something when the power fails. i am going to the dealership to get this resolved...but it is incumbent upon your organization to have this issue reviewed..and a solution available...asap. please look into this....i have never experienced such a frightening problem while driving. thank you

While driving down the high way, my car just turned off and had to pull over the right side of the road. luckly it was not busy, but it has been happening a lot lately. that means i don't have a car. i looked online and they have a faulty ignition switch. at first i changed the main relay to a brand new one from honda. but it still did the same thing, till it didn't start again.

Honda needs to recall their recall of the ignition switch. at their suggestion i had the ignition switch replaced several years ago when it was not a problem. just recently i had a problem with their replacement and had to have it replaced again. why was the original switch a safety concern in their eyes but their defective replacement switch is not a safety concern. i feel they should be held accounable for the failure of their replacement switch.

At times, engine suddenly dies out when coming to a stop (traffic light; stop sign). the car has automatic transmission. i can easily put the car in park again and restart with no problem. the car has 80k miles and is well maintained. after a few of these scary experiences, took the car to a local honda dealership in atlanta ga. cost of $160 (description - routine maintenance - bg fuel service all - cleaned throttle body). assumed this would have corrected the issue. i was wrong. in two more occasions - had the same problem again. the last time it happened, the car suddenly stopped while slowing down to stop at a stop sign. the car started again (takes a while in an automatic transmission though). i was lucky a car behind me had enough space to stop. this time, i researched the web and noticed many owners have similar problems with honda accord 1999. i was one of the lucky ones though (the car had not yet stopped while driving in a busy traffic). at 20,374 mile, the same honda dealership performed the 2002 safety recall - accord ignition switch - electrical ignition switch fp number : 3510-s84-305 (switch e 79530), this was done on 12/03/02. took the car back to the honda dealership on 10/28/11. i asked the service technician to look into the 2002 ignition switch recall ; customer complaints & what else was performed to correct it. i don't believe this service adviser was aware of this major safety issue with honda accords (1999). this time the dealership surprised me with replacing ignition switch again. this was a $405 repair. the fp number is 35130-s84-a01 (switch s 79530). i assume there are two parts in the ignition switch. i am not certain why the 2002 safety recall did not advice the dealerships to replace both parts (e & s switches). the dealership advised me the s switch is behind the ignition switch.

I have had incidents with my honda accord for months. many times, particularly when the weather was extremely hot, it would take as long as 15 minutes to get it started. but worse, it would just simply die when i was driving it. sometimes this was in my neighborhood which wasn't scary, but a couple of times it was in major traffic and once on a busy highway. i took it to my honda dealer (where it has been regularly serviced since the day i bought it!) and explained the issue. they charged me $100 to tell me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. my sister found this website and thought it could have been the ignition switch. it continued to have issues, so i took it to an independent mechanic and told him to check the ignition switch. he charged me $40 to tell me there was nothing wrong. i took it to another independent mechanic who said the ignition switch looked fine, but maybe it was the fuel switch. he replaced that and i still had issues. i took it back to the last guy and told him to replace the ignition switch anyway. the car feels great! it hasn't run this well in a year. my point is that if you have these symptoms, and they tell you it looks fine, insist on the switch replacement. this guy charged me $180 (and that included an oil change) and it would have saved me time, money and some very scary situations had honda done that to begin with!

I was driving my 1999 honda accord on the highway and all of a sudden all the electrical system cut off and i was forced to pull over and restart the car. this has happened several times before and i took it to my mechanic who said there is a problem with honda's with the electrical switch and it was recalled..this is very scary and could cause a major accident. is there anything one can do to rectify this problem because i was told to pay for it myself..thank you

The nhtsa should be aware that honda has failed to notify many accord owners of a potentially dangerous problem, namely, an ignition switch that may cause their cars to quit at any time and at any speed. nhtsa recall 02v120000 of may 16, 2002 included the 1997-1999 accords; however, honda claims many of these accords, including ours, were excluded due to their vins and will not replace the switches without charge. our 1999 accord ex recently experienced this problem and examination of the old switch (photos included in a letter to the nhtsa) showed that deterioration of the switch contacts caused the switch to reach a temperature sufficient to melt the solder on the v+ white wire/switch bond. replacement of the switch remedied the problem. when the switch fails the car quits immediately and the driver is left with no option other than to pull to the side of the road -- which at high speed and in congested traffic may lead to a serious/deadly collision.

Our 1999 honda accord ex automatic is part of the recall program on faulty electric ignition switch.so sometime in oct. 2002 the electric ignition switch was replaced at robertson honda in north hollywood, california. no such stalling problem has occured until december, 2010. but on jthe morining of january 2011 the car stalled in the freeway with four passengers iin it..everyone is so fearful because the freeway is busy with cars driving at 65 miles an hour. the car has approximately 172,000 miles at that time. this incident happens again four times within the span of 6 months after january 2011 on the freeway and on surface street . i broughjt the car to robinson honda at north hollywood on january 30, 2011 for service telling the service manager that the problem is exactly the same before the recall and that it may still be covered by the nhtsa recall program but he said if it was fixed before then you are not eligible for the second free service. at 2:30pm , i called craig lavoie for status of my car but he said they are not doing anything because they couldn't duplicate the problem. i am suspicious they did not do anything because i mentioned to him it may be covered by the recall. i told him to replace the elec. ignition switch and i will pay for it. they did in a flash for $180. i place a complaint at honda corporate office at torrance, california in august 2, 2011. i was assigned a case manager to mediate the issue but still yet to receive the outcome of my complaint. the car has registered with 180,326 miles at the time of the service.

I was driving down a freeway w/ my 6 yr grand daughter in backseat, when all of a sudden ( no warning ) my car died. we almost were rear ended. when it died, the lights on the dash flickered on and off about 4 xs. mech state ig switch burn out cuz 2 much amp goin thr system. honda refused to do anything even thou ig switch was on recall but not my vin number. several attempts/calls were made to honda-said no. the ignition switch that was taken out, well it is quite obvious there is too much of something going thru causing the melting of all the stuff i can see. i have the old switch. i had the mech give it to me. when he told me it was switch i asked if there was a recall so he checked and yes so i called honda. the woman i spoke to was very mean/snotty saying my vin was not on the list. so, i had to go ahead and pay out of my pocket at the dealership my insurance comp towed to for fixing. if honda was going to fix it, i would have had it taken on to a honda dealer. the poor ways i was treated on the phone, i don't think much of honda anymore.mech said honda has not made a switch yet that will handle the amperage that is going to it so this one will only last 4-5 years give or take. we could have been killed when the car died.

Starting in april of 2010, my car started stalling at random times; there was no rhyme or reason to it and no noticeable associated symptoms. the car would simply stall or completely cut out on me in an instant, whether i was idling, stopping at a stop sign or light, or driving down the road, most commonly when i was driving in the city in traffic, but three times when i was driving 70mph on the interstate. most often after it stalled and i put the car in park, it would start again immediately. however, it was also common for the car to stall and for it to take 5-6 tries for it to restart. this stalling occurred nearly daily, most often once but sometimes 3-4 times each day. i took the car into an auto repair shop twice, in may and june 2010, to have this stalling looked into, but they were unable both times to find anything wrong with it. i finally took it in a 3rd time on october 11, 2010 and they told me that i have a faulty ignition switch.

Occasionally the car has died while driving on city streets or interstate. the tach drops immediately to zero and i think all or most of the dash lights come on like they would with the key in the start position. when i try to restart the car, it starts and runs for about one second then dies again. sometimes, it will take four or more attempts before it will keep running like normal. it does this when the car is cold or hot and has done this in intersections. there was a recall for this problem (nhtsa no. 02v120000) for 1999 honda accords, but honda says my vin was not included, therefore i am not covered. *tr

While driving on i-75south bound all of sudden my car (1999 honda accord) stalled, immediately i put the car in neutral and moved to the shoulder, i realised this was an issues with my ignition switch. i could hold the ignition key and drive.i called a tow truck and he took me to the nearest mechanic who said there was a recall on the ignition switch. he gave me temporary fix that would get me home and i could talk to my honda dealer. the issue is if there was a recall and if was fixed (next my dealer told me that my recall was fixed) why did it occur again. was the fix done during the recall was not good enough? is there a really an problem with ignition switch? i had the car fixed at the dealer again.

I own a 1999 honda accord. t will periodically stall while i am driving. i believe it is an electrical failure of some sort because some of the dash lghts go out and it just quietly stalls. this ha happened in town, in intersections, on the highway...it is scary and dangerous. it happens radomly and with no pattern. my mechanic says he can't find the problem. i found a description of te same problem online and itsaid it was a sensor in the ignition.

My 1999 honda accord ignition switch was under recall and was fixed in 2004 however again the ignition switch problem almost killed myself and two children when i was driving on the highway and stalled while i was going 65 mph. i could not get the car to restart. i took it to a local dealer who said that again the ignition switch is bad in my vehicle. when this occurred the safety hazards and flashers on my vehicle also failed so there was no way to warn anyone on the road that there was a problem. *tr

As i was driving in the fast lane on the highway late last night my honda accord lost all electrical power for about 15 seconds and then turned back on in gear. during this time i had no engine power. as i was pulling off the freeway this occurred again for about 20 seconds. since taking the car to the dealer this morning this problem occurred 3 more times. the dealer seemed familiar with the problem and recognized it as being related to a 2002 recall of the 1999 accord v6. the dealer then replaced the wiring associated with the ignition switch that had previously been fixed in the recall. this seems to have corrected the problem. *tr

Ignition switch failure, second occurrence. car stalls during normal operation. the original recall replaced the ignition switch and repaired the interlock. the switch failed again. obviously this was not a fix only a delay of the next failure since the same component failed. i used detailed repair instructions from the internet to make the second repair myself. i requested goodwill from american honda which was denied so i am out of pocket for parts and my time to repair. i believe that honda should be accountable since the replacement part also fails at the same rate as the original component. when this finally causes an accident or death i'm sure they will settle out of court to prevent further loss on this component when all they really had to do was engineer a non-defective replacement. in other words fix it once but fix it right. honda did not do this and will not warrant the second defective component. they better hope i am not injured when this fails for the third because i have my documentation. *tr

My son's 1999 honda accord experienced intermittent ignition failure, forcing him to pull over to the side of the freeway, and then attempt to re-start the car. this occurred randomly over a period of about a month, and was very unsafe. the car has about 117,000 miles on it, and was subject to an earlier recall campaign 02-031, which resulted in changing the ignition switch several years ago at about 52,000 miles. now the replacement switch failed. he took it to honda of el cerrito in the bay area and they charged him about $100 and told him they couldn't figure out the problem. i purchased an ignition switch from a discount honda parts supplier over the internet for about $50, and replaced it myself. i found several internet web sites that described this problem in detail, and i feel that there are many others experiencing the same thing. i have a 99 accord and a 92 civic which both experienced ignition switch failures, so i had a pretty good idea of what was going wrong, even if the dealer was not being very smart about it. this is very annoying and dangerous. i wish the dealers were more helpful. i spoke with american honda in torrance, and they told me that since the vehicle was repaired as part of the recall campaign, that if the part failed again, it was my responsibility. why can't they make an ignition switch that holds up longer than 50,000-60,000 miles? the last time it failed was while i was driving through placerville, california on highway 50 on october 24, 2009. the first time it failed was around the beginning of the month. *tr

While approaching a stop light at north loop 1604 west on 9/26/09, the engine stalled without warning. i had to sit there in the middle of the street and struggle to get it started again and hope no one came behind me. while driving on university campus, the engine stalled out of the blue. it happens about 6 times per day while driving the vehicle on busy city streets. the consequences are extreme stress and fear for mine and others' safety because i don't know when this vehicle will just stop on me. this exact issue is described in nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000. i called honda and was told by on operator that there is no such issue with the 1999 honda accord and there was only one recall on this particular vehicle, yet i found over 15 recalls on the 1999 honda accord by searching the nhtsa website. while it may be true that not all of those recalls may apply to the 1999 honda accord that i drive, nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 is exactly what is happening to my car when i am driving it. *tr

My car will randomly stall out when stop or driving. its stalled while stopped at a light, turning after stopped at a stop sign, on the highway during rush hour traffic. all the lights will come on, the rpm will fall to zero, its will kind of chug like if a manual were to stall even though it is an automatic. the spark plugs, ignition switch, distributor and pvc valve have been replaced. *tr

Ignition switch failure vehicle shuts off while driving, a recall of the ignition switch was completed in 2002 for similar problem. nhtsa #02v120000 the vehicle is now exhibiting the same problems addressed in the original recall, i contacted honda usa on 08/11/2009 to see if they would repair an obvious defect in the ignition switch. i was told they would only repair a recalled item once. since the replacement switch is also defective and creates a dangerous driving condition, i would hope nhtsa would look into this issue before someone is injured or killed due to honda's lack of concern for their parts and repairs. *tr

My car began quitting while driving may 2009, however, it would immediately start again. 06/2009-7/2009 when trying to turn the ignition, the dashboard would flicker. after a few tries, the car would start but then quit. on 8/4/2009, while driving the car quit again but then smoke came from behind the steering wheel ( steering column area). simultaneously, the car quit. the car would not start at all by turning the ignition forward. however when turning it backwards it would try to crank. the car was towed to and now currently sits at bluegrass honda in paducah, ky. according to honda, it is the ignition switch, which i found was under recall but the dealership claims that the ignition was replaced in 2002. i don't believe this is true because here i have the very problem that the recall acknowledged. i don't believe i should responsible for payment on a recall, however, the dealership is charging me $200.00. *tr

I am the owner of a 99 honda accord coupe and have been having trouble with my car failing to start in certain types of weather and the longer i've had the car the more the problem has progressed and it is now stalling while i'm driving down the road, including yesterday when i had my 4 month old daughter in the car. if someone had been following too closely who knows the damage that could have been done. multiple mechanics have looked at it and cannot find anything wrong. i have been on honda's website and found that there are recalls and mine have been fixed long before i bought the car the only problem is i am still having the problems i've contacted honda and they seem to be very unwilling to help me further and so i am stuck at this point with a vehicle i'm afraid to drive because i'd be putting myself, my daughter and others on the road in danger. i've recently found the website car complaints.com and under electrical complaints i was baffled at how many people are having the same problems even after their recall had been taken care of also, and that was only one website. i do not have the money to take jabs in the dark replacing parts that don't need replaced especially after i've had to pay to have it towed twice now (not cheap). i should not have to wonder whether or not a car that is in great condition and under 100,000 miles is going to start or not. i hope this complaint will move someone to do something because i have not been able to receive help from anyone else. i feel that this case should be reopened and something should be done to make honda responsible before someone is seriously injured. *tr

 1. car shuts off suddenly without warning while driving. it has happened while idling and when moving 70 mph on the highway. 2. there was a safety recall in 2002 to replace the ignition switch for this same problem. there were no problems at the time but the work to replace the ignition switch was done in 2002. car began problems early in 2009 with 125,000 miles at random intervals. no accident has occurred but still a very scary incident. 3. since the recall work had already been done, the dealer replaced the main relay after diagnosis showed nothing for a total of $212. another failure occurred the very same day so i returned to dealer and got the ignition switch replaced at a cost of $146. *tr

For the last 4 to 5 years my 1999 honda accord has stalled for no apparent reason or would not start up right away. i had taken my honda to several places for checkups, i have replaced the battery and a sensor several times before a diagnostic check indicated that i likely had an ignition switch problem, that repair company referred me to my honda dealership where i purchase the vehicle new and the dealer could not duplicate the problem. yesterday my wife had the car on the city of memphis busiest street when it stalled with her in the center lane without any warning by the indicator lights. she called me frantic telling me that almost every car passing her nearly hit her. i called the police to help get traffic control to help her. she as a few others have indicated could not get the car to shift gears to neutral while stalled. finally after sitting 10 minutes she was able to start the car. if this would have happened and my wife was rear ended with my 19 month old daughter in the car, i would have likely gone nuts on honda. instead this morning i took the car into the dealer who kept the car running for a while when they were able to get the car to stall (or so they say). the dealer switched out the ignition switch at a cost of $300 on top of the $75 diagnostic at the dealer one month ago and a $49 diagnostic at a small service station not to mention the sensors that were switched out that did not solve the problem. i have already filed a complaint with honda indicating that this problem is a life safety issue which they should replace free of charge. if this happens again i will likely see a lawyer i just pray that my family is not injured or worse. this morning the dealer indicated that the problem could also be the main relay but since they were able to supposedly able to duplicate the problem they replaced only the ignition switch. please let me know if anyone else is involved in litigation to get this problem resolved and receive reimbursement. *tr

The vehicle had been experiencing intermittent, sudden and complete engine stalling over the past several months. my local independent shop could not find a problem. the car finally stalled completely and the steering column started smoking. dealer replaced ignition switch and said it was under recall. i never received notice from honda of a recall. during two recent visits to the dealer the paperwork indicated that there were no open recalls on the car. i have lived at the same address since purchasing the car new in 1999. i received and responded to an earlier recall. however i believe that honda and their dealers are now neglecting to inform owners of required recalls. i was unnecessarily put in dangerous situations and spent a great deal of time and money addressing a problem i was not properly notified about. *tr

In 2002 - 2004 my 1999 honda, accord had a recall to replace ignition switch, vehicle could stall in traffic causing an accident. i had the ignition switch replaced by honda in 2004. december 2008, my vehicle while driving down the road just shuts off, after a few minutes restarts. the vehicle shutting off starts to get more frequent, so i take it to a mechanic, who replaces the ignition switch. the problem seems to be fixed for now. apparently honda didn't fix the problem with the first recall. *tr

Ignitions switch was replaced due to car randomly stalling on at least 6 occasions while driving resulting in near collisions due to loss of power steering, power brakes and the ability to accelerate in order to safely remove vehicle from the roadway. honda customer service informed me that the ignitions switch had been recalled however the ignitions switch had previously been replaced on my vehicle several years ago under this recall and any repair would be at my own expense. repair invoice is available as can verification of the problem by the repair shop who experienced the same problem while test driving the vehicle. i feel this repeated problem illustrates failure on honda to resolve the original problem associated with the defective ignition switch which presents an immediate treat to life of all owners of the 1999 honda accord and the public at large affected by the original recall and another recall should be mandated by the nhtsa. *tr

Main relay problems i recently purchased a 99 honda accord le coupe - 6 cylinder automatic. once i got the car home i found that the car had a starting problem. early morning when the temperature was cool the car would start fine. after sitting in the sun all day while at work the car would fail to start. opening the doors and letting the interior heat drop would allow the vehicle to start. with no satisfaction from the dealer other than looking at me like i was crazy i searched the internet for honda hard starting problem... i found a website that gave the same problem that i was having and directed to how to repair the main relay. i followed the directions as they explained and re-soldered 5 connections on the printed circuit of the main relay... since that time the honda will start in any type of weather. just seems odd after searching the forums and the amount of people that have had the same problems that i was having and nobody has seemed to know what it was... some searching turned up a problem resolve... now you mean to tell me that im not the only one having the problem and honda service centers tell me that they have never heard of a problem like mine.... don't get me wrong i love the accord and can live with some of the problems but as a customer i expect that honda would at least acknowledge that there is a problem and by the description they should be able to tell me what they think it is and how much it would cost to repair the vehicle....i'm not chasing a recall... i simply want my car to start when i turn the key... *tr

I was driving my 1999 honda accord when my cd started skipping and then my abs dash light came on. i continued on the highway (a major interstate with heavy traffic) until my exit. when i slowed down at an approaching intersection, my car just died. absolutely everything quit...radio, ac,etc...car flashers would not work, i was stranded in heavy traffic without any way to let approaching traffic know i had car trouble. put my hood and trunk up and escaped my car. it was terrible...but would have been much worse if i had still been on i-285 which is a heavily trafficked artery around atlanta with multiple lanes and fast traffic. i got absolutely no warning that this would happen...no dash lights (i.e. battery indicator light) came on to let me know that my alternator had died. that is why the car quit as i slowed at the intersection...the battery had been drained completely. i have had nightmares about what would have happened to me had i still been on the interstate or had this occurred at night, and i do not feel safe knowing that this could happen again since i travel that busy highway every day! i think this is a major electrical defect. my car was repaired at carey paul honda in snellville ga and they assured me that i did not have an electrical problem...but, no indicator light came on at all! please investigate this. i will also contact honda of america about this problem. *jb

My 99 honda accord ex cuts off while traveling down the road without warning. this is due to ignition sensor which i corrected shortly after buying my car with rick hendrick honda. now years later there is a recall on the ignition interlock. but, honda will not fix the ignition senor because it has nothing to do with the recall. certainly this is a serious safety matter and i feel it's unfair that honda will only fix half of the problem and burden the cost to me. i don't think i'm alone with this type of problem. please investigate this matter. i feel i shouldn't have to pay for this ignition sensor. i had the recall ignition interlock fix at honda of columbia, p.o. box 8234 , columbia, sc 29202. *tr

I was trying on the highway going about 65 mph when the car stalled. when i realized what happened and tried to coast off the road, the car started back up without me doing anything. it continued to stall and restart nine times in a 3 mile stretch. the last time i pulled off the road because the car did not restart. i waited a few minutes and tried to start the car. it started. i drove the next 10 miles holding the key steadying in the ignition. i don't know if that helped but i got home without it stalling again. i knew it was the ignition switch because it had been recalled and replaced twice previously. when i took it to the dealer they told me it was my emission system and i had to have my evac canister replaced ($250). i did that and was driving home from the dealer when my car stalled and restarted again. i took it to a local repair man who took care of the problem. he replaced the ignition switch and the car has been fine since. *tr

Sometimes my car will just stop running without warning. extremely perilous when it happens in a turn and at low speeds because of loss of power steering or if sitting at a traffic signal. it appears to be related to the ignition. dash lights may or may not flash on an off. adjustment of the ignition key position/angle fixes it until it happens again. has happened about 10 times in the last year. *tr

I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. as i took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. the car was towed to marin honda. they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the d4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago.(my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. the d4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. and it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called marin honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. when we checked your website and looked under recall for 1999 accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out? *nm

My husband and i bought a 1999 honda accord ex in 2002. not long after buying the car we noticed that the car acted sluggish when going from a stop. it wasn't that much of a problem so we didn't do much about it other than adding heet to the gasoline thinking we had bad gasoline. then we started noticing a sort of grinding noise when we would start the car which came from the key ignition. the car wouldn't start so we would try again and then it would start. this year 2006 we started having problems with the car stalling when we would stop at stop signs. we took the car to a mechanic and we paid for new spark wire and plug. soon after the car started stalling as we were driving down the highway! we immediately took car to a honda dealership where we were told our catalytic converter needed to be replaced! my husband didn't think this was the problem so we didn't have it replaced. the car kept on getting worse almost causing a couple of accidents when it would quit going down the highway. we then heard of a recall on 1999 honda accords through consumer reports. we made an appointment with the honda dealership again but were told we would have to pay for the repair since our car wasn't included in the recall! we called honda corp to find out why it wasn't included and were told they recalled only certain makes and models and ours wasn't one of them. we of course went ahead and had the ignition switch replaced. we can't understand why honda didn't have our model and make recalled when we could have been in a serious accident. at the very least we should have been told of a problem so we could have repaired it right away. we did keep the ignition switch. we just had the car repaired but haven't had any problems with it stalling. *nm

1999 honda accord ex coupe v6 (california) engine stalls immediately when blinker/signal lever is used, for left or right turn signal. when engine stalls, green key light flashes on dashboard. otherwise, failure happens randomly. failure has occurred both while driving at 60+ mph and while vehicle is stopped. at high speeds, engine stalls and then restarts in a few seconds. has not occurred when engine was cold/not-warmed-up. failure occurred about once a month at first, but in the last three months, averages about one failure a week. failure started happening at around 70,000 miles. car now has ~92,000 miles. car has had one owner since purchased new. car recieves regular scheduled maintenance. car had complete tune-up (oil/filter,spark plugs, ignition cap & rotor, ignition wires, transmission fluid (honda), air filter, fuel system cleaner, etc...) after first failure. alternator failed and was replaced many months after stalling/blinker failures first occurred, and had no apparent affect on stalling problem. stalling still occurs, and have no idea what cause is.

Problem was the ignition switch that applies to of the safety items on the ignition switch recall. i was charge by a honda dealer $498.00 including taxes. the reason i have i brought my car was: worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. ( i do not understand why is not on the ticket ). as a secondary issue i have mentioning the lock not working properly as a result of your previous work (recall in 2007). your technician has told me that was a normal thing. the mechanical from firestone rafael toledo, (phone +1 (305) 667-4866) disagree with your suggestions at that time, the car should not been returned to me with the lock like that, but that was not important to me not even now.. anyways it always turn my car on. i told the advisor not to proceed with the recode of the old key because it was worn; i am really scared to drive my car now.  I have a 99 honda accord in which the engine stalled while driving. i didn't realize it until i tried to turn the wheel and realized that the steering wheel locked. it took several times to restart and took it to the mechanic. i thought it might be the alternator but the mechanic said no because the light would have come on. he said it was the ignition switch. honda had a recall on these in 2003. i was never notified of the recall because honda said my switch was not apart of the recall. i am having the same problems with my car stalling while driving as the switch with the recall. i called honda to rectify the situation and to find out why they didn't notify me of the potential problem. i have two little girls who ride in this car which by the way is my only car and we could have gotten killed due to this manufacturing defect. *tr

Car stalled when at complete stop to make a turn on5-24-07, started back up immediately and drove fine. car stalled while making a turn into a pharmacy parking lot on 5-25-07, started right back up and drove ok after that. i was thirty miles from home to go to the doctor so i started home on i-44 in a rain storm. i was driving 65 mph in the inside lane when the car stalled. thought i was going to die. this on a friday afternoon on a holiday weekend. was fortunate enough to be able to guide the car over the outside lane of traffic and get it off the road. started right back up. i did turn off the ac and prayed all the rest of the 20 miles or so that i had to go to get home, which i did. called a local repair shop that i have used before and being a holiday weekend, could not get it in before tuesday, 5-29-07. found to be ignition switch. was told to call honda dealership in springfield, mo and was told was fixed after recall. in looking at the paper work i had from previous owner, it had been done at 67375 miles and again had problems and was done at 83050 miles again. they would not help me at all at the dealership so i had no choice but to pay for it myself. the car now has 103596 miles on it. so that tells me that these ignition switches are good for 20,000 or less and my life was in jeopardy because of this faulty switch. now how long can i drive and be safe before this happens again???? the very least that honda could do is pay for this but more important fix the switch so that people do not think they are going to die like i almost did. i am 69 years old and this is a strain mentally and financially. *tr

The 1999 honda accord was subject to a recall in summer 2002 for an ignition switch defect. i had the recall taken care off in october 2002. now, in 2007, the same part was defective again. the cost to me to have this fixed wasa $293. the dealership was not willing to help w/ the cost because of the time lapse. honda refused to look at it. i was told that a recall part was only repaired once a period! any additional repairs to that part were the responsibility of the consumer. my position was that if the part was defective in design, this should still be handled as a recalled item. i have no true way of knowing if the part i received in 2002 was indeed a redesigned part, or simply the same part in the vehicle at that time. i am asking specifically for all of the charges to be refuned or at the minimum some part there off 1/2 to be shared by both parties. the ignition switch should not fail under normal driving. car stalled 3 times in traffic with no warning due to this defect. *ak

1999 honda accord vehicle id #1hgcf8648xa061168 november 21, 2006 i was driving on a freeway, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. i took the exit off the freeway. the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the car was towed to marin honda, a nearest dealer. november 24, 2006 they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the (trans gear selection) light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem. marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. november 24, 2006 ever since the ignition switch was replaced, the trans gear selection begins to flash when the engine is on. and it makes a clunk sound and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called the marin honda service advisor and said the transmission problem must be related to the ignition switch replacement, but he was adamant that ignition switch has nothing to do with transmission. he said it is pure coincidence that both the ignition and transmission had problems at the same time. november 28,2006 december 1, 2006 the mechanic at petaluma honda said that the range sensor is malfunctioning and there are a few wires dangling which may be why the cruise control is not working. they recommended that we take the car back to marin honda. i drove the car to marin honda. december 2, 2006 eddie parnell, service manager at marin honda said that they've replaced the range sensor but still has the same problem. he thought it could be the transmission. he said that they continue checking. december 9, 2006 after eight days, jack, service advisor at marin honda, called and said that the transmission has to be replaced. he said that we will have to pay half of the cost. *nm

The honda accord ignition switch recall in 2002 arrived the same day my wife had our 1999 honda die on her while driving on i-95. the engine suddenly dying (turn the key and it starts right up again) has happened a total of six times since then. each time we've taken it to our honda dealer. they eventually said to bring it in the next time it quits (without re-starting it) so they can find out what's wrong. how do i do that? the recall stated they would replace the ignition switch with a new improved one. only recently did i find out that the dealer only replaced the wiring (twice) and it continues to die. the dealer says it can't be the cylinder/tumbler (and i say it must be the tumbler) and that it would cost me about $380 to replace the complete ignition switch (which they should have done in the first place. honda should do something. too many people have had this happen to them!

On at least two separate occasions, the engine on my 1999 honda accord spontaneously quit while driving down the road. it then restarted immediately. on at least two other separate occasions, the engine would appear to start, but would quit immediately when the key was released from the start position. the cause of the problems was diagnosed by the dealer's service department as a faulty electrical part in the ignition switch. i have learned that some honda models manufactured during the same time frame as my vehicle have been recalled for this very problem, but i was informed that my vehicle was not part of this recall. considering the history, it sounds as if not all of the problematic cars have been identified and/or recalled. the problem is clearly a safety issue. losing power to a vehicle while driving at highway speeds could lead to catastrophic consequences. as a result, i feel that my 1999 honda accord should have been a part of that recall. fortunately, i was able to identify and correct this problem at my expense before it caused an accident. *nm

Over the last two months, my accord ex has stalled numerous times while driving on highways, major streets, and a couple of times in the middle of major intersections. not only does it stall, but it is very difficult to start up again. i sometimes have to sit wherever i may be for 10-15 minutes while trying to start up again. when i took it to the dealer last week to have the recall on the ignition switch taken care of, i was informed it was already done in october 2002. yet, they told me my problem was a bad ignition switch. they proceeded to tell me that honda has no obligation to fix it since they have already replaced it once. when i complained that 3 1/2 years was an unusually short life for an ignition switch, especially after a recall, i was given the honda customer service number to call and complain. upon calling, i was again told that honda has no obligation to do anything. i continued to complain. finally, they told me they would file a case for individual review. today, i received the decision that my case does not qualify as a goodwill case because my car does not receive its maintenance at the dealer. (why should i when i can get the same work done for 1/3 to 2/3 of what the dealer charges.) i told the customer service rep, chris, that apparently the switches honda furnished the dealers for the recall parts were as defective as the original and honda does not want to take any responsibility for their actions or for possible effects of them. he did not disagree, but maintained his stance that they had no obligation since they fixed it once and i don't have my car repaired at the dealer. i don't understand how policy for goodwill cases can supersede safety issues. i strongly believe that honda should pay for replacement of the switch. they are flat denying any responsibility for a problem that can and probably already has resulted in serious injury. *jb

The car has had difficulties starting and stalled out numerous times while driving. this is an extremely dangerous condition and can cause an accident. this exact problem was highlighted in a recall by american honda for 1997-2000 honda accords dated may 23, 2002. they suggested in the recall that the ignition switch should be replaced. i took the vehicle to honda and was told that the vehicle's vin # 1hgcg6678xa032278 did not fall within the category of this recall that affected over 1.3 million cars. my problem is the exact issue that is outlined in the recall notice. i spoke to american honda and they set up a case # n012006-05-0100464. they would not cover the cost of the repair even though this is a manufacturing defect that can cause serious injuries or death if the car stalls. as indicated this car has already stalled numerous times. i request that you require american honda to cover the repairs of this issue. *jb
