PE03014HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)04/15/200309/05/2003IGNITION-PARK INTERLOCK SYSTEM
Six of the odi complaints are duplicative of the manufacturer complaints, as well as four of the crashes.the noted injury occurred when a rollaway vehicle that had been inadvertently parked in neutral struck the exiting operator.the warranty claim count shown for other represents incidents where honda's analysis of claim detail indicates the interlock system malfunctioned.the interlock system utilizes a lever to block ignition key removal when the transmission is not in park.honda has identified a wear condition of the interlock lever that can cause the system to malfunction; when wear occurs the key can be removed from the ignition while the shifter is in a non-park position.honda documents indicate that a manufacturing process may be the cause of interlock lever wear, and that this process was revised in january of 2001.an engineering analysis will be opened to further investigate this concern and its scope.

Transmission fail squills whines loud in reverse won't go in reverse sometime squills whines in park when started only way to hush it is to throw in drive then into neutral and pull the park brake. in drive it shifts hard going up in gears then when slowing down it down shifts hard like a manual transmission sometime hard enough to squill the tires . this is a big problem with 98-02 honda accord automatic transmissions and this needs to be fixed its going to get someone killed . honda needs to be forced to recall these car/ cars and fix the problem

My 17 year old daughter just bought a 1999 honda accord. after less than 24 hours she noticed the transmission slipping when going into 2nd gear. if you attempt to accelerate, the transmission causes the entire car to shake violently while not accelerating. this problem is known to honda for many years. there are thousands of instances of this same problem and literally hundreds documented online. how many people will have to be injured or even die when the car fails to respond to a driver entering traffic before honda will admit they knew the transmissions they were installing were defective and provide a fix?

I bought this car new in 1999 while working as a salesman for a honda dealership.its always been well maintained as it is the only transportation i have.i no longer work at the dealership but my little boy needs a way to get to various activities as well as school.we depend on this machine and hondas reputation to get things done.around 76000 miles the transmission started to shift hard and not want to go into gear. after checking around various shops and the internet i was surprised to find out that so many other owners of 1999-2002 accords had the same problems or worst.some with only 50000 miles had to be replaced.i'm pretty sure this is an american honda deal as the japanese people would back up their products.once again we get screwed by our fellow greedy americans.i will not be buying another honda product be it a lawnmower, car, motorcycle, generator or paper bag for that matter.i will also warn everyone i know by internet and carrier pidgeon about american honda and their lack of ethics.what goes around comes around!

Dear sir / madam - honda in usa has intentionally dropped a large number of vehicles from its list of recalls/ fix needed to save the costs and maximise their profits. this case is one of them. my honda - 1hgcg565xxa091504 is facing all issues similar to ones recalled from 1999-02 models. first the ignition switch issues last year and now the transmission issues. i called honda and they said its not part of re-call while everyone knows these were part of re-calls so why was this vehicle dropped from the recall database ? how many more vehicles were dropped from the list and why ? i think the issue is not related to age but something else and needs investigation. now it makes me wonder how many vehicles they include and what they drop from re-calls as cost saving measure ? thank you ! ravendra bhardwaj 920-574-3220 4727 north brookridge lane unit # c appleton, wi - 54913

Check engine light came on. brought to the dealer and they said the code indicated a torque converter circuit malfunction. dealer supposedly checked and road tested and said they couldn't find anything wrong. they reset the warning light and said the transmission maybe going bad. i was charged their typical outrageous labor cost. i should have brought it to an auto parts store who could have told me the same thing for free. but i thought they would know more about what is wrong with their cars than an auto parts code reader, i was totally wrong. the warning light came back on during my drive back home from the dealer. all the required maintenance has been performed by the dealer since the time i bought it new. the car had around 98,000 miles when the warning light first appeared. i brought it to a transmission repair shop next and they replaced the linear solenoid and checked the others which were all fine, but the warning light came back on. the trans. shop said this is a predominant problem with 99 and 2000 accords, but the mfr only recalled the 2000 models. i know this is true because i also own a 2000 accord which was recalled by the factory for transmission problems. the mechanic said that honda should have recalled this model year also since the 99 and 2000 models were essentially identical. now the only recourse is to overhaul or replace the transmission which will cost lots more money. the manufacturer should recall the 99 accords as well or at least shoulder half of all the expenses because of this defect. i have own several vehicles other than hondas and i have never encountered any transmission problem and all have gone over 150,000 miles. good bye honda! all my family and friends will surely know about this. *tr

I have repaired my transmission twice now and its in my garage now it needs a transmission again i have changed all sensors egr o2 sensor this last time was different i was driving at a normal speed then suddenly i got a hard jerk and i knew my transmission was going bad again in 2005 when my transmission went i called honda to see if my 99 accord v6 coupe was one that was on the recall after taking my vin number they said it wasn't but if im having the same problem like everyone is why im not getting the replacement. *tr
04/03/2009960001
The check engine warning light came on and the trouble code is p0740, transmission torque converter circuit malfunction. the car surges forward from a stopped position even at the slightest depression of the gas pedal which makes it prone to an accident by hitting the vehicle in front. i brought it to the dealer and they reset the warning light, test drove it and told me that they can't find anything wrong but told me that the transmission may be getting bad. on the way home, the warning light came on again. i brought it to a trans repair shop and they checked the trouble code to be the same p0740 code. they checked the resistance of all the solenoids and replaced the linear solenoid which was out of spec. the warning light came on again on the drive home. i had it scanned again and the code was p0740 again. the trans shop said that they may eventually need to completely rebuild the transmission and may cost around $3500-4000. i have already spent $400 so far. i now drive the car sparingly until i can have the funds to get a rebuilt trans. i wish the nhtsa would require honda to recall this model year like they did for the 2000 model since there seemed to be an unusually alarming high rate of complaints on 1999 accord transmissions. *tr

We bought our used accord about a year ago for our daughter to go to college and not to long after we realize that the transmission was starting to shift very rough especially from the lower gears to the high ones..we changed the transmission fluid and do all the regular maintenance for the vehicle.. yet we have noticed that the problem has gotten worse.. now the transmission not only jerks really bad shifting up but it's worse going downwards.. sometimes now the reverse gear will not engage and we have to turn off the engine and turn it back on before it goes to reverse.. we took it to the dealer and they said that we have to replace the transmission and most probably the engine mounts.. $2500 to $3500 we call american honda and see if they will help and of course our factory warranty has run out so we are on our own.. according to some auto shops that we have talked to this the problem that these accords have... faulty transmission.. what is honda doing? nothing .. what are we going to do? shouldn't we file a class action law suit against honda for not fixing this problem. *tr

Got a car tune-up done by a honda dealership. the gears shifted a lttle different but i attributed it to the tune-up. it progressively got worst so i took it back to the dealer to have it checked. after their analysis, they diagnosed it as a bad differential and it needed a new transmission. the car only had 78,000 when it was at the dealer for the tune-up the end of may. do i have any recourse through the manufacturer???

The transmission of my 99 honda accord ex v6 is behaving erratically and is creating a hazardous situation on the roads as the car suddenly jerks and speeds up or slows down as the transmission shifts erratically without any control. at times the car just locks up into 2nd or 3rd gear on the freeway. i believe this is a serious safety issue for others and for my family. after doing some research, i notice that a lot of other car owners have had or having similar experiences with this model and make of car. honda has issued a recall on the transmissions of other accords for model year 2000 - 2003, however i understand that even for the 1999 year accord, it has the same transmission problems as have come up on the 2000-2003 model years because it is the same transmission make. *tr

I bought my 99 honda accord on june 28, 2003 for 16,000$ odometer readout 56,000 miles. i have since noticed noises and jerky like movements upon acceleration also when letting off the gas peddle when the car is trying to idol down. as if to be stuck or revving in the gear in which its leaving and ends with a jerk once it gets to the gear its changing to with a rev or jump especially if on a hill. now at just over 130,000 miles and in the year 2008 the problem is worse and worse. the problem has been temp. made better with flushing of the transmission fluid, and for whatever reason there is no changeable transmission fluid filter. i have been told by honda that i need a new transmission. what! 130,000 miles and it already needs replacing, this is suppose to be a honda,, honda once meant reliability, biggest mileage ect. i have not as of today which is july 15, 2008, replaced my transmission, and im hoping that with a little prayer god will have mercy on me and my dumb car, because i cant afford a new transmission, and yes i am willing to bet that they have this part in stock even!! hondas good to have those odd parts that break , lets you know that your not the only one with problems on those parts. they like to screw you once you drive up and tell you lots of things you do not need to do to your car just to take every dime you have to your name. i once saw a honda outside the showroom where i bought my car,, it was on showcase for its mileage of over 600,000 miles! im thinking they didn't have tranny problems before they reached 200,000 miles! *tr

The transmission was slipping from 1st to 2nf gear, it was mildly noticeable. i had it checked out by transmission auto shops and they said i would be fine and there was not any indication of problems from the diagnostic tests. i continued to drive it for a year. then one day it shifted so hard i barely made it out of the middle of the city going through multiple intersections to find a place to park it. the transmission will need to be replaced. had the transmission dropped in the middle of the busy city, i know it could have caused an accident. *tr

I have a 1999 honda accord lx with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. at highway speeds the car stalls and i have to shift to neutral to restart. update: may 2008 and i have no reverse gear at all. after reading all the complaints i would really like to know why honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. why? does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem? i am calling honda in the morning and if i don't get satisfactory results i would like to start a negative campaign against honda. this is crazy and i want answers. *tr

Hi, i own a 1999 4 door automatic honda accord ex-ul, but the transmission literally failed on this car and is due to the fact of a defective part, which i found from reading various article on the website. the honda is not accepting its problem. i have seen serial complaints out transmission failure on the website. honda have extended warranty by recall on 2000-2001 honda accord models, by they haven't done for 1999 models. my personal view is that they are avoid a huge recall by hiding the problem. i would request you to investigate the matter as it may cause lots of accidents due to transmission failure in the of the freeway. since honda is protecting himself, we would need you help to check on the reality of bad transmission put in 1999 hondas. *tr

Car is stalling and seems that transmission is slipping. in researching web, i have run across at least 20 drivers, with exact same make, model etc. although my car has 120k miles, some only had 60k when their transmission failed. every mechanic that i spoke with (including dealership) admits that the transmission in these models are known to fail. i can't believe that a dealer as reputable as honda has not been made to reengineer their transmissions. according to the complaints i have read, even the 2004 models have transmissions beginning to fail. it seems extremely unfair that the customers are the ones footing the bill. *tr

I can add another transmission failure from a honda accord 1999. this car has the same transmission as the recalled transmissions on honda accord from 2000 to 2002. my transmission seal leaked at 110,000 miles. i had the transmission rebuilt at 149,000 miles for $2100. of course, the reason i bought a honda was better engineering. i am beginning to think that i have a false perception of the honda quality. this was my first honda and i don't think at this time that my next car will be a honda automatically. i have gotten unsold on them. based on all of the other letters i saw on this same problem, and the fact these cars had lower mileage, i don't think i have a prayer on honda kicking in something for the repair. next time i buy a car i am starting with these letters on cars at this website first!!!! cars are quite expensive to have to settle for problems! *tr

I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden my car felt as if it were in neutral. the transmission went out on the freeway. the car was at about 95k miles, but this seemed very early for a transmission to go out. i got the transmission rebuilt, which cost me about $1600. filing this complaint after a few years, but i recently heard the 1998 honda accords are having a recall. mine is a 1999 honda accord. *tr

The transmission in the honda accord vehicle years 1998-2003 are defective. the transmissions are failing at as early as 70,000 miles. my accords transmission recently failed at an estimated 80,000-85,000 miles. upon further investigation i discovered that honda did/or will replace the transmission in only the 2000 and up accords but will not acknowledge a problem in the 98 and 99 honda accord despite knowing that the same exact type of transmission was used in the 98 and 99 versions as well. there are numerous complaints concerning honda's refusal to take responsibility and replace the transmission in 98 and 99 as well. is their anything that we can do. i think it's unfair to spend over $2,600 to replace something that honda knows is defective. please let me know what actions i could take. thanks *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. when accelerating from a stop, the vehicle speeds forward. the dealer stated that the transmission is slipping and needs to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that they will replace the transmission free of charge, but the contact would be responsible for the labor. the engine size was unknown. the current mileage is 83,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

I was driving back from sf to our home in santa rosa, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. then the odometer dropped from 65 to 0, went back to 65, then fluctuated. as i took the exit off the freeway, the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the engine did not start when the tow truck driver tried it, although it cranked. the car was towed to marin honda. they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the d4(trans gear selection)light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem, and that we should take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the trans fluid 7 weeks ago.(my wife told the customer service advisor that we had the trans work done a couple of months ago when it fact it was just changing fluid as part of regular maintenance). marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. the d4 starts flashing when the engine is started and shift to any one of gears. and it makes a big clunk and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called marin honda cust advisor and told him it must be related to ignition switch replacement, but he's adamant that it has nothing to do with it. when we checked your website and looked under recall for 1999 accord, we found it had ignition sw recalls in three different years, 2002, 2003, and 2005. ignition switch(2002), cylinder wear, collar, plate latch(2003), interlock function(2005). could trans range sensor ckt malfunction be caused by heat from the ignition wiring burning out? *nm

My 99' honda accord would slip gears and jerk a lot when i would put it in gear or stop at a stop light and then proceed to go again. after a day of driving i took my car to the dealership and the said my automatic transmission had gone out completely and that they see it happen to my make and year of car all of the time. i had to replace the transmission and take a hit of three thousand dollars to get my car functional again. it amazes me that there is still not a recall for this but almost everyone who owns these cars has to replace the transmission. *jb

A few weeks ago i was driving and my transmission started to shift erratically through 1st,2nd,and 3rd without a change in speed. later that same day the transmission would not shift into the following gear resulting in the rpm's to increase follow by it jamming it into gear. the car must no be replaced with a used or new transmission and i was quoted $3000+ to get this done. after alot of reading around and investigating this problem i have learned that this is very common and the 00-01 accords have a recall for the exact same transmission. my car has 155k miles on it but i have all the service records and car has been very well maintained. i just think it is outrageous that there is no way for honda to split the cost at the least. *nm

Started seeing transmission fluid on lt side under vehicle. had seal replaced by local trans ship. two weeks later fluid leaking again. researched and found recall on 2000 and up for bad bearing causing this exact problem and honda's extended warranty on those vehicles. took vehicle to rt.23 honda and they advised that even though this was the same problem the only item that the honda field service manager would only allow the part only. i would have to pay the $1000 labor. i requested the field manager's name but brad morder (service writer at rt.23 honda) refused to give it to me. i lodged a complaint with honda (case #12006-04-250-0809)that was handled by chris martinez of honda (x-118183) who stated that he did not want to discuss the particulars and that he had no authority to change the decision of the field manager. again, when i asked for the name of the field manager mr. martinez would not give it to me. when i asked him for his superior's name so that i could escalate this matter, he advised that his decision was final and there was no other recourse i could take. any help you could furnish would be appreciated. c. o. heine. *nm

 1. transmission fluid started leaking on 99 accord ex with >92100 miles. eskridge honda tightened boxton bolt. leaking got worst. took car back 2 days later. eskridge stated a new transmission would be required because the inspection revealed that it was the same transmission problems experienced by other models -- 00-0 models where honda usa provided an extended warranty to replace those transmissions. 2. from my research, other consumers have been experiencing similar transmission problems on their 99 hondas, but there's been no recalls. 3. since i view it as a safety issue, i plan to pay if necessary to replace it, since i don't want my 16-yr son driving an unsafe vehicle. 4. is nhsta aware of this problem on the 99 hondas? if so, what's the status of your actions in getting honda usa to extend the warranty for 99 hondas. *nm

1999 honda accord ex v6 automatic transmission issue. vehicle purchased sept 2000 with approx 15k miles. vehicle began having problems with the transmission not engaging after throttle had been pressed at approx 42k miles. bad hesitation, and on an almost daily basis. press on the gas, the engine revs, but vehicle barely moves and when it does engage it is very harsh. dangerous trying to enter freeways, pass other vehicles or cross streets/intersections. the basic honda warranty of only 3/yr 36k miles had already lapsed. transmission fluid had been changed in aug 2002 with 31k miles. again changed(drain/fill) in june 2004 with 46k miles and again in sept 2006 with 61k miles. honda transmission fluid used. *jb

1999 honda accord v-6, 90k miles. in july, 2005. i started noticing a whistling sound when the engine was on and the abs and other dash lights would come on and off sporadically. during normal maintenance, i inquired about the noise and dash light problem. nothing was found wrong. the dash lights have been coming on and off ever since. today when the car was cranked, it made a louder than normal whistling sound. after driving if for 1/2 a mile the noise stopped. the next time i drove the car, it stopped accelerating and acted as though it was going to cut off. i parked it and attempted to crank it again but the battery was dead. after recharging the battery, it still could not accelerate. i had it towed to the honda dealership. after inspection, i was told that the transmission would have to be replaced. after researching the internet, i realized that many others with 99 accords have experienced the same problems. considering this is the 3rd honda i have purchased (the transmission had to be replaced on my 93 honda also) it appears to be a problem that needs to be addressed. *nm

I am writing to express dissatisfaction with my 1999 honda accord ex v6, vin# 1hgcg1655xa030151. about a week ago my check engine light came on. i checked the code and it indicated torque converter clutch malfunction. the car was shifting and driving fine, so i brought it in to the honda dealer to get the transmission fluid changed. i cleared the error, but it came right back on. the car was shifting and driving fine. today on my way to work at 75 mph at highway speeds, it shifted in to second and stayed there. you can imagine what that did to rpms! now it won't go in to reverse or any other forward gear but second. i called my honda dealer and they said i'm looking at a transmission replacement. $2950 just for the parts (doesn't include labor). that comes with a 36,000 mile warranty that i will easily use up in one year due to my long commute. being that the car has 136,000 miles on it, i figured it was highly regrettable, but understandable. until i started looking online! i suggest you check out this thread! http://www.autofan.com/forum_thread.asp?message=3625 this appears to be very widespread. there are people on that post with 72,000 miles and three dealer replacements, some with six dealer replacements. my big worry now, after reading so many other experiences, is that i'll replace the transmission and be buying another $3000 transmission a year later. *nm

One day while driving down a busy 3 lane highway my honda would not go forward any more. no matter how hard i pressed the gas it would no longer accelerate. i could put the car in neutral or reverse, but in drive i could not get it to go above 10 mph. i immediately recognized that it was the transmission and took it to a transmission place who told me honda has an extended warranty for 98-2000 accords under 100,000 miles, and they will replace your transmission. since my car only had 80,000 miles, i called the service station, made an appointment and told them that it was the transmission. they told me okay, but there would be a $95 fee if it wasn't the transmission. they called me later that day, and said my vin# didn't match the recall, so sorry. i called american honda, and they said i should not have been given that information, and there was nothing they could do. i stated so what you are telling me is that in 98,99 & 00, you put bad transmissions in your accords, i have a bad transmission in my accord, but i'm not covered??? to which they replied yes. *jb

I have had a transmission failure in my honda accord. when i took it to a mechanic in parkville, missouri, he checked the transmission fluid and found it black. he flushed the transmission, put new fluid in, and changed a filter behind the glove compartment. he told me that honda from 98 to 2002 had transmission problems. he told me to drive the car for a few days and see if that didn't fix it. i could tell as i drove home that it was not fixed. the mechanic said that a new transmission would cost 1,600 to 1,800 dollars. since i have had to get a new engine in my accord or my lemon, three new batteries, and now a new transmission and it is not already paid for because i leased it and am in the process of buying it, i need all the help i can get. *nm

Transmission slips and will not go into gear. only 55,000 miles on the vehicle and we strictly adhered to the maintenance schedules. based on research on the web, this is quite common but honda is not standing behind the transmission failures. honda recognized the issues with the 2000-2003 accord transmissions but failed to include the 1999's when their is obviously widespread problems with them.

I was driving my mom's 1999 honda accord ex v6 home last night around 11:00 pm. as i was approaching the exit and proceeded to decelerate from 65mph, the car violently downshifted several times causing me to lose control of the car. a large tractor-trailer which was behind me was narrowly able to avoid rear-ending (or running me over!) by switching lanes. my life flashed before me as i thought this was the end of my life. fortunately, i survived, however, i have a nasty case of whiplash. after doing my research, i've found that the transmissions used in the 98-2002 accords v6 have a faulty carrier bearing which brakes and ruins the innerds of the whole transmission. after calling honda usa, i was told tough luck, and was sarcastically told that if i expected them to pay for replacement, i shouldn't hold my breath. regardless of the extrordinary inflated replacement cost of $4800.00, the nhtsa must open a defect investigation. although the 2001-2002's were recalled, the 98-99's with the exact same transmissions have not. i fear for the lives of all those individuals with these cars - especially if they cannot afford the outrageous cost to replace honda's faulty transmissions. this is truly an injustice!*ak

I noticed transmission leaking from my 1999 honda accord ex at about 78,000 miles. i also noticed that my transmission was slipping and not changing gears at the proper times. thus, i took my car to a transmission repair shop and was advised that my seals and axels had to be replaced. to get a second opinion, i took it to a meineke shop who advised that my axels were fine and that i needed a transmission technician because my problem was greater than i imagine. i contacted a technician in the area and he assessed the situation. the technician advised that the problem was that the behrings on the vehicle were poorly manufactured and thus were causing leakage and slippage. he offered literature on this particular problem which helped me understand. his solution was to completely rebuild the entire transmission but that was a cost that i could not even fathom to bear. this led me to contact a transmission repair technician that i had previously consulted with when i was faced with transmission issues with my 1988 honda accord. this technician diagnosed the car with the same problem as the previous transmission technician. he cautioned that honda accords built in between 1998 and after had those faulty parts in the transmission, thus causing the same problems i was describing. i had to other alternative than to trust this technician with the repair of my transmission since i had previously dealt with him. he was honest and straightforward from the start. as a result, i have had to pay for the repair of the transmission, including new parts; i have had to rent a car in the interim; and i have not been able to obtain any type of answers as to why this happens or why there has not been a recall. the technician has granted me the favor of keeping the old parts and will provide me with an itemized bill for his services, including any parts ordered for the repair/refurbishing of the transmission.

Within the first year of owning my accord v6, my transmission sensor blew out. that was the only thing covered under warranty. i repeatedly expressed concerns to the dealership that there was something with my transmission. it would thump and lurch the car forward or hesitate between gears. repeatedly they assured me this was normal. like everyone who buys a honda, i thought hondas are built to last so maybe this is normal. the fix-it was to flush my systems on numerous occassions. which by the way, made things worse. i had to manually shift an automatic. such irony. now the vehicle only engages 2nd gear. i have been fighting honda with this for 9 months now.*ak

When backing out of my driveway, which is slightly inclined, the transmission in my 1999 accord v6 will slip as if the gears are not meshing and it violently pops. it also requires me to press hard on the accelerator for the car to even back out of the driveway. the transmission also does not shift smoothly when driving and sometimes downshifts erratically, such as after i've already stopped. i bought this car used with 72,000 miles after taking it to the nearest honda dealership for a thorough checkout prior to the purchase. i was not told of a transmission problem with this model by the dealer, and everything checked out ok except they said the transmission fluid needed to be changed, which i did. after approximately 1 week, the transmission slipped for the first time with me. i carried it to the dealer again and was told this was normal for a honda. well, it's not normal for my other two honda accords (91 and 92). it now slips every day that i drive it and i believe it will completely fail pretty soon. i suspect the previous owner probably had the transmission fixed and then sold it to me. i also have a 2002 odyssey, which ironically, is in the shop today for a recall to check the 2nd gear in the tranmission for over-heating and to install a oil jet whatever the hell that is. i am very angry at honda and will probably never buy another honda of any kind if a recall is not issued on these obviously cheaply designed and dangerous transmissions. why can't you put some pressure on honda to include the 1999 model accord with the 2000+ models for the trans recall? it's obvious that there is a significant problem.*ak

While pulling out into a roadway at a hurried pace to avoid oncoming traffic, my '99 accord would not accelerate and the rpm's just increased. an oncoming vehicle noticed that i was not getting out of the way and slammed on his brakes. fortunately, before an impact occured, my honda violently slammed into gear and i got out of the way of the other vehicle, but the acceleration was so sudden i was not able to turn. the accord impacted the curb, causing tire and rim damage. the transmission is progressively getting worse and i am dismayed to find that honda knows the transmission is defective, yet will do nothing to help '99 owners. honda needs to recall all these transmissions, not just the 2000/01 because they are a threat to driver safety (as i have experienced). i have always liked honda's cars but may consider another vehicle if honda allows their bottom line to endanger customer safety. *la

I first noticed a difference in my 99 accord coupe v6 transmission when it was cold out. the car jerked between 1st and 2nd gear. it ran fine once the car warmed up. when i called honda to ask about the issue, i was told older cars do that and it was nothing to worry about. about a month and a half later the transmission started jerking between 3rd and 4th when below 40 mph. my car then would not leave a stopped position until hitting at least 2500 rpm's then it kicked into gear. i took my car to my local honda dealership - they flushed the transmission fluid - charged me $85 and on a side note on the bill they stated transmission needs replacement - internal damage. they did not talk to me about this nor did they offer to repair this at a charge. when i purchased my car i bought the 100,000 mile extended warranty, which i paid close to $1500 for. honda realized there was an issue and extended the 100,000 mile warranty automatically for the 2000-2002 models. i had approximately 108,000 miles on my car when i took it to honda for this issue. after dealing with honda customer care for over 3 weeks i got nothing but a run around from them. i was told to call the company that handles the extended warranty service, this company told me they were not sure why hcc referred me to them b/c it was hcc decision of how they wanted to handle my case. in the end honda did nothing for me. i took my car to a transmission shop; after they tore down the transmission they found extensive damage. i was told that the 2nd gear thruster barring had fallen into the pump which destroyed it, 2nd gear was completely destroyed, the electrical cylinder was damaged beyond repair, and the remaining 3 gear thruster bearings had also fallen out. in the end it cost me over $3000 ($2000 in parts alone) and almost 2 months to repair the damage to my transmission. *la

I have a 1999 honda accord exv6 the transmission started slipping 3 months ago. i called my dealer at that time because i had received a letter nov 2001 from honda stating that there was a warrany extension for egr system clogging. the service advisor stated that this would not help my case. now at 70000 i need a new transmission.i bought this car after owning a toyota for 12 years w/ no problems. to say the least i am disgusted.

1999 honda accord ex v-6 transmission failure. i had been noticing acceleration problems. i thought the problem was with fuel injection. i was coming back from a weekend trip and the check engine light came. i took the car to the dealer the next day for the 75,000 mile service. they said it was the transmission. the next day it failed the transmission test. dealer said it would have to be replaced. i do not drive long distances and i do not feel safe in the car. *nlm

Transmission failed in my honda accord 99. with research i found alot of consumers that had the transmissions fail in their accord 99/2000/2001's. the 200+ transmission were under recall. i directly asked honda if the part (auto transmission) was the same in the 99 accord as the 2000 / 2001 which is under recall. though several honda dealerships i found out that the part (auto transmission) is exactly the same in a 99, 2000 or 2001 honda accord. the honda warranty team would not admit (again i directly asked) that the part was the same. thus, i am left with honda knowing that 99 accord's have known defective automatic transmissions that fail at road speed (erratic shifting). my transmission failed on an interstate at 60 mph road speed by shifting from drive to reverse. i almost got hit by an 18 wheeler that had to go off road to avoid my car. i guess when the fatalities grow big enough to warrant a class action suit honda will be forced to recall. *nlm

Today i have 88000 miles on my 1999 honda accord v6 coupe. i am currently on my third transmission. the first time, my car was driving very rough at around 23000 mi. every time i would accelerate, when my car shifted from first to second gear, the car would give a strong jerk, one that was strong enough to shake the coins in the coin holder. i took the car to honda and they told me it was ok, and they could not diagnose any problems. around 30000 miles, my transmission would not shift out of second gear. i took it back to honda and they replaced it with out any problem. later, around 60000 miles, my transmission lost all forward driving gears. keep in mind this is the second transmission. i had it towed to a gas station, and called honda, only to hear, the car is out of warranty. the decision was made to get the work done at the gas station. they acquired a new transmission from honda to be placed into my car. tonight, that transmission is now without first and third gears. the car wont shift either. the car needs to be placed in second gear, and shifted to third manually for it to function. if it is started in 1,d3,or d4 it will start in second gear and stay in it. i have 90000 mi on my car today. this seems to occur every 30000 mi or so.*jb

Noticed lurching and trasnmission slipping. the car was having difficulty changing gears. next day i had car checked out was advised that transmission fluid was black( burnt) and the motor mount was also weak. the following day i took the car to ed voyles honda for my 45,000 mile/3 yr service. i was then advised by service advisor, jim vartiak, that large metal pieces came out when the trasnmission fluid was being drianed and was a sign of deterioration of the trasnmission. after my service on 10-28-02 i went to work. on my commute back, i heard a loud noise and then the check engine light came on while i was on the expressway. the vehicle was not accelerating well, the gears were not shifting. when i got to my destination i noticed that i was parked . when i put the car in reverse the engine had to be reved up to make the slightest move. it took several minutes to move three feet. the next morning, 10-30-02, the car was driving about 40 mph then sudddenly dropped to 10 mph during a busy hour approx. 7:30 am. at times the honda accord would not even move at all and then it would suddenly jot out. i made it home, but the car is completely immoble the transmission is gone. the worst part is there was no help offered for a resolution. i have made calls and also written to america honda motor co., inc, but i have not yet recieved any response from my. correspondence. dt

1999 honda accord vehicle id #1hgcf8648xa061168 november 21, 2006 i was driving on a freeway, and i noticed smoke streaming from the top of the steering column. i took the exit off the freeway. the car was losing power, and jerked when i gave it gas. i pulled over and called the tow truck. the car was towed to marin honda, a nearest dealer. november 24, 2006 they tested and found the electrical portion of the ignition switch had failed. they replaced it but at the same time the (trans gear selection) light began to flash. the service advisor said that it's a completely different problem. marin honda charged us $205 for the replacement of ignition switch. november 24, 2006 ever since the ignition switch was replaced, the trans gear selection begins to flash when the engine is on. and it makes a clunk sound and the whole car shakes when the gear is shifted to reverse or drive. i called the marin honda service advisor and said the transmission problem must be related to the ignition switch replacement, but he was adamant that ignition switch has nothing to do with transmission. he said it is pure coincidence that both the ignition and transmission had problems at the same time. november 28,2006 december 1, 2006 the mechanic at petaluma honda said that the range sensor is malfunctioning and there are a few wires dangling which may be why the cruise control is not working. they recommended that we take the car back to marin honda. i drove the car to marin honda. december 2, 2006 eddie parnell, service manager at marin honda said that they've replaced the range sensor but still has the same problem. he thought it could be the transmission. he said that they continue checking. december 9, 2006 after eight days, jack, service advisor at marin honda, called and said that the transmission has to be replaced. he said that we will have to pay half of the cost. *nm

I have a 99 honda accord ex v6 and found out recently that the transmission had to be replaced. it was having serious shifting problems and the check engine light came on. the hadn't even hit 90,000 miles yet. when i went in to honda to see what the light was on for it turns out it was a torque converter clutch system failure and the transmission would have to be replaced. honda told me it was no longer under warranty (3yr, 36k mi warranty) so they claim they couldn't replace it. it shouldn't matter if it isn't under warranty. no one purchases a car, new or used, to have to get a whole new transmission before the car even makes it to 100,000 miles. besides the major mechanical purchase, honda's faulty transmissions are a safety hazard. i can't recall how many times i've practically been ran off the road by tractor trailers because my car couldn't shift and accelerate fast enough to get onto the highway. honda should be ashamed of themselves. does it really take someone to die before they try to remedy the situation? *jb
