PE02072HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)10/02/200203/28/2003SEAT FRAME BRACKET FAILURE
This pe was opened based on 10 consumer complaints in the odi database alleging that the power assisted seats were failing in certain 1998-2002 honda accord vehicles.failures are concentrated in the 1998-99 model year vehicles.the bracket that attaches the seat bottom to the seat base is fracturing due to: 1-the weld condition of bracket, 2-the drivers weight, and 3-the impact on the seat when the driver enters the vehicle and sits down.over time the bracket that attaches the seat may fail at the left front corner of the seat bottom.the other 3 points of attachment of the seat bottom to the seat base stay attached and the seat movement is limited.the attachment of the seat bottom to the seat back does not fail.the condition is most apparent during rapid acceleration causing the seat to tilt rearward.although a few complaints report concern over loss of vehicle control, no loss of control incidents, crashes or injuries are reported.in response to customer complaints, honda will provide owners of 1998 and some 1999 accords a no-cost reinforcement for the seat at the left front corner.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Driver's seat of my '99 honda accord has become loose, rocks and pulls away from steering wheel upon acceleration, causing lack of control since momentum pulls driver away from wheel. when seat is not occupied, this is evident by pushing on headrest, causing seat to 'rock' backwards approx 6. mechanic said that a piece of steel on the bracket under the seat is broken (& seat bracket is the same for all 1998-2002 models). dealer said this isn't a recall or anything so repairs would be at my expense. car cannot pass state inspection until this is fixed, so looks like i now have no choice but to try & locate a replacement bracket at a junkyard & pay someone to install, costing me at least $300 (with no guarantee that the replacement bracket will not have the same problem). big safety issue here with lots of complaints reporting the same problem (per online search)- why has this not been properly addressed?

My power assisted driver's seat bracket that attaches the seat bottom to the seat base has fractured because of the weld condition of bracket. my seat weld at the left front corner of the seat bottom now causes the seat to rock with no stability. the honda dealership will not honor the pe02072 stating that my vin no. is not in the range and that the time period has expired. this is a dangerous weld failure that odi should hold honda accountable.

1999 honda accord: the bracket that attaches the driver seat bottom to the seat base at the front left corner is fractured due to the weld condition of bracket, this causes th seat to wobble and i grip the steering wheel as a support when seat position shifts.

The seat bracket on my 1999 honda accord broke as described in nhtsa action number pe02072. honda refused to repair the seat and denied that there was ever a manufacture defect. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda accord. while entering the vehicle, the driver's side power assisted seat tilted backwards. the contact called the dealer and manufacturer in reference to action number pe02072. a representative stated that they would reserve their right to provide a free remedy until after the vehicle was inspected by a technician. the contact is in the process of having the vehicle repaired. the failure and current mileages were 130,000. updated 06/25/08*cn the dealer stated the slider assembly needed to be repalced as the broken bracket was integral with it and could not be repaired. the consumer stated when he stepped on the accelerator, the seat lurched backwards. updated 06/25/08

Dt*: the contact stated a piece of metal detached from the slider of the driver seat, causing free movement of the seat. the manufacturer was notified, who instructed the contact to take the vehicle to a service dealer. the vehicle was not taken in for service.
08/23/2006150000101/01/1999
Dt*: the contact stated where the seat attaches to the frame, the seat was only held on by a spot-weld. under normal wear and tear, the spot weld breaks lose causing the seat to rock back and forth. the driver's side power seat rocks back and forth about 6-8 inches. the dealership has been made aware of the problem.

Seat frame bracket failure on power assisted driver's seat. the left front corner of of the seat bottom bracket failed, and appear to be due to the weld condition of the bracket. under acceleration the silt tilts backwards. can't believe the nhtsa just closed an investigation on 3/2003 this issue and decided it did not warrant the use of agency resources, i weigh 190 pounds, and do not jump into and out of my seat, it is clearly a manufacturing safety defect.
04/29/19992
The left front corner of the seat has about a half-inch of vertical slack in it. (you can move the left-front corner up that much with your hand.) this allows the seat to rock back (in a rocking motion) when pushing against the seat back. this happens when getting in the car, changing positions in the seat, and even under hard acceleration. the dealer replaced the seat track under warranty. that didn't solve it. the service representative at the dealer told me this was not an uncommon problem. it started as soon as we got the car (purchased new) and it's never stopped. *jb

Seat track is broken and seat is flopping around. the metal piece that attached to the seat frame has broken off. when looking at the break, observed metal shavings on floor and a lot of metal shavings at the point of the break. appears to be a defective part or workmanship. my concern is that if i had had an accident, the seat would not have held and i could have been thrown out the back of the car. i have reported this to honda customer care department, they did not seem concerned at all. offered to pay half of the part required to fix this but they said the part was around $700! i have not had it fixed yet because i feel they should be responsible. i see that mine is the 4th complaint reported to you regarding this same issue.

Left metal control arm that raises and lowers the drivers seat has broken. both the metal and the weld have broken and the bar under the seat is no longer attached to the control arm under the left front of the seat. the seat flops and is unstable. this car has not been involved in an accident but the fear is that had it been or should it be, the seat will fall backwards causing serious injury to both the driver and rear seat passenger. should the right side fail, the seat will not be held in place at all. this does not seem to be the type of failure that should occur under normal circumstances or even in an accident. honda will accept no responsibility for this failure even though it appears to be a serious safety concern.*ak

Tl* - the contact owns a 1999 honda accord ex. the contact stated that the srs air bag light flashed on/off, and it was related to a problem on the driver's seat. the contact stated the problem with the light was an every day occurrence. the contact stated that the lights turning on/off normally happened upon the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. the contact could be driving at 5 mph or more when this occurred. the contact was told that he needed a new driver's seat because of the wiring. the contact stated that he took the vehicle to the dealership to find out if there was a warranty or recall and was told that there was not. the contact stated that the 2004 and 2005 model vehicles already have the safety recall, but it was not on this 1999 vehicle. the current and failure mileage were both 109,000. *ak

Service bulletin #' 030013 & 03034 seats:front assembly:power adjust recall replaced bracket for looseness in seat-back & cushion - did not resolve problem - returned to dealership & was advised seat track - needed replacement - ($758.53 track - labor $218.38) the seat started shifting when vehicle was approx 2.5 years old - contacted honda direct (800-999-1009 case#n012003-08-220-1363) was advised they would pay 50% of seat track. the dealership and honda direct have been courteous & kind. i do not feel under normal usage that the seat track should fail. i believe that the recall should have been for the track not the bracket. *ph

I was in an accident. i was sitting in stopped traffic when an suv rear ended me going about 40 to 45 mph . it then sent me into a truck that was stopped in front of me. my seat the drivers side colapsed and i ended up laying flat in the back seat. after talking to the body shop i found out all the gears in the power seat were stripped causing back injury. it is my understanding that this should have never colasped. i have contacted the honda dealer along with honda consumer relation and the safety council and received no satisfaction they all just passed the buck back to one another it was a vicious circle.*ak

After tilting forward passenger side front seat only locks into place if the back of the seat is locked back before sliding the seat back into place. i have had several occasions where the passenger slid forward while braking. the seat belt held, but the passengers were caught by surprise. i showed the dealer this and was told well, just lock the seat back. however, when the seat has been tilted forward, passengers naturally slide it back into place. if they do not lock the back upright first, there is a chance the seat is not locked into place.*ak

 (1) driver's power seat was moved to its most extreme rearward position while cleaning under the seat. backrest was not moved or unlatched from it's normal upright position. seat was then repositioned to its normal driving location. (2) upon sitting in the seat and leaning back against the backrest, it gave way and driver fell backwards. holding onto the steering wheel prevented driver from falling into a nearly horizontal position. upon releasing pressure against the backrest, it sprang back to its normal upright position. seat would not lock into the upright position. if the latch had failed while driving the driver would have been thrown backwards and could have resulted in loss of control of vehicle with a possibility of a crash. (3) driver attempted to operate the power seat's various controls controls to re-engage latching mechanism without success. when vehicle was brought to dealer, it took about an hour of disassembling the module containing the latching mechanism module before it could be made to lock. technician could not explain why it failed and why it repaired itself or that it wouldn't happen again with the original module. new part was ordered and is to be replaced at owner's expense week of july 5- approximate cost $400. presently don't know if i can retain custody of old part. *nm
