The subject vehicles are designed with an occupant position detection system (opds) for the passenger seat to suppress the side airbag in the event of an out-of-position occupant.on some vehicles, the opds unit and sensor grid may be susceptible to high moisture content and/or to sporadic electrical interference that would result in the illumination of the srs readiness indicator.in this condition, opds suppression will not function, but the side airbag will still deploy in the event of a side crash. honda issued a technical service bulletin in april 2004 to address this problem. however, the problem persists even after the warranty period expires.as a result, some owners may not be obtaining the necessary remedial service work.continued illumination of the srs indicator can mask the detection of other airbag component faults if they occur. in march 2006, honda issued a service bulletin (06-009) to extend the warranty on srs illumination and opds issues to 10 years or 150,000 miles (whichever occurs first).honda will send notification letters to owners of the subject vehicles and will provide a no cost replacement of the opds unit as needed.in addition, other my 1999-04 honda and acura vehicles are also covered by the bulletin.this action taken by the manufacturer is sufficient to resolve the issue raised by this investigation.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). when i was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. i was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as i had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. my leg was also in the break pedal as i made those turns after getting into the private property from il rte 83. i can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. it all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. the car came to halt only after hitting the building. both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. it was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. it was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, i was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. i am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with honda accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike. *tr

The srs light came on. honda tells us that the component that regulates the airbags (a mini-computer in the dash?) has failed and must be replaced. honda advises that, until replaced, the airbags will not work. based on the internet research i have done, this appears to be a fairly common problem. honda wants to charge $1000 to replace the unit, although it appears that the component is available online for about $325, and requires about an hour of labor to install. this seems to us to be a pretty fundamental safety issue, and this component should be engineered to last well beyond the anticipated lifetime of the vehicle. *tr

On november 26, 2012 my srs light came on and has stayed on since. this vehicle though it is a 2000 honda accord has only 66,200 original miles will cost about $800-$900 to repair. this is an issue which involves the safety of the driver and any passengers. i am told it could be a possible danger if the airbag does not deploy in any accident. i am not sure of the significance; i get different stories from folks. it is my understanding from some research that this light could possibly come on and stay on after recent transmissions problems. may 9, 2012 just five months after having my transmission fluid replaced i needed to have a rebuilt transmission at a cost of $3757. for several weeks i had discussions with honda customer service department to no avail. i personally will never buy another honda product in my lifetime and intend to discuss this situation with any person considering buying this product. i have been a loyal and faithful car owner with my honda dealer since i purchased the vehicle. i received all scheduled services even though i did not have the recommended mileage. this is my reward, a rotten car from a rotten company. *tr

Red srs light came on in july 2012 and has never gone off since. i have the notice from honda dated spring 2006 about this problem and how they are covering this problem for 10 years or 150,000 miles. i called honda in ca at 800-999-1009 on 8/23/12 and was told that they will not cover the repair because the car is over 10 years from its june 2000 built date. the car had 130100 miles on the day i called. funny thing is that they will cover any seat belt problem for the life of the car regardless of the number of owners but they won't cover the srs airbag system, i called my local honda dealer where i bought the car from and the service manager told me to bring it in now, which i did. they scanned the srs system for a code. came up the occupant position detection system ( opds). i asked if the air bags would still deploy in a crash with the srs light on and he said no. i want to know that the air bags will work and i feel honda should repair this defect for free since it is a life saving safety system. i called honda again after i got home from the dealership to try to speak to someone higher up in management chain and as usual i got nowhere. this is an expensive repair and it's dealer only parts. there seems to be many people with the same problem when i searched 2000 accord srs on and most of the people with this light on said that they are or did not get it fixed due to the high quoted cost of the repair. these cars are on the road with non-working srs/ airbags systems because honda used substandard parts that did not last as long as they should have and than refuses to properly fix this problem, that's just not right! i wish the nhtsa would order honda to recall and repair these cars regardless of mileage or time at no charge. alot of these older honda accords will end up being purchased used by the younger drivers who can't afford a brand new car. *tr

I purchased a 2000 honda accord for my daughter and the srs light came on. i took it to the dealer who scanned it and said it needed a new opds unit and sensor costing over $800.50. as i research it, i am astonished to see how many honda's are affected by this problem and that a widespread recall is not in effect. please investigate this serious safety issue that could cause airbags not to deploy. this is unacceptable in this day and age. *tr

The srs light has come on my 2000 accord. now it is past the extended warranty of 10 years. i got suckered into paying $100 to honda for them to diagnose. they came back and said the opds needs to be replaced and the airbag won't deploy because of the srs light on. they wanted another $300 to replace. i decided not to replace because i am not convinced it won't fail again but now i am driving around knowing my airbags won't deploy. there is an obvious faultyness with the srs and opds and i can't believe that honda feel a warranty extension is sufficient. they should be recalling this serious safety problem.
10/15/2009150000
For no apparent reason at all (no moisture problem; no cell phone, computer, etc. use; no disconnecting anything at all, much less related to seat belts, passenger seat occupancy, seat removal, etc.) the srs light came on and has remained on for many months. google shows this to be a widespread problem, which has triggered a very wide range of responses from honda. this has been a wonderful car given timely completion of all scheduled maintenance. but the srs light problem, since it involves the safety restraining systems, should be guaranteed for the life of the car. but, given the various ways people with this issue have been treated, i am reluctant to take the vehicle to honda. it may only require a reset for the light, which should cost nothing. but charges for a diagnosis are in the $70-100 range. then, if there is actually a problem with safety, fixes have cost in a range of $600-1500. the whole situation is absurd.
08/29/201091060
I have accord se 2000. the srs light stays on. the dealer must take responsibility and fix this problem of main control unit malfuction.

Srs in 2000 honda accord is on. advised it is the opds sensor, and opds unit. recalls on similar models, but not my vin #. air bag will not deploy if there is an accident.
11/10/2009110000
The srs light has turned on so there is something wrong with the air bags. if anyone were to get in an accident deaths will occur as the air bags may not deploy. with a bit of research i have found that this is a common problem with honda accords dating from 1998-2011. http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/accord/2000/seat_belts_air_bags/srs_light_is_on.shtml this website provides many owners' accounts of the same exact problem in which honda refuses to solve a problem that they have caused. it is a lethal design flaw and honda should be solving this problem instead of making their customers pay ridiculous prices for it to get fixed just to have the srs light come on moments after the so called repairs. the customers are not responsible, it is honda. please contact honda and resolve this issue. for every moment delayed, the more likely it is for a fatal accident to occur due to this problem.
09/01/201095500
Srs light stays on. this indicates that the airbags may not deploy in an accident. honda lifetime warranty for restraint system should cover this, but they don't. seat belt switches were checked and ok so sensor needs to be replaced. repair cost estimate: up tp $900. why isn't nhtsa issueing a recall for this potential safety issue? look at the long list of complaints for this in the database!
12/16/2010120000
The srs light as gone off approximately once a year for approximately the last 5 years. it has always been caused by a sensor in the seat belt, which is covered by warranty. however, the dealer always tries to charge a diagnosis fee to determine if it is a warranty issue and it is a safety issue every time the light goes off. it is also a huge inconvenience. the dealer has told me that the airbags will not work when the light is on as a safety precaution. each time it happens the seatbelt sensor needs to be replaced. this is a safety concern because the airbags are frequently not working.
10/08/2010140000
Tl-the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the vehicle was previously repaired for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 02v080000, air bags:frontal. upon starting the vehicle the srs light was illuminating on the dashboard. the vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure and was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 140,000. sm.

2000 honda accord ex. consumer states defective srs light and airbag disabled not functioning *tgw the consumer stated his vehicle was never properly repaired. the opds sensor needs to be replaced at a cost of $500.00 the consumer was informed his vehicle was out of warranty. the check engine light illuminated due to a defective oxygen sensor.
03/01/201072000
My 2000 honda accord srs light is on, no any accident was involved. the light keeps on even after reset several times. i wonder if the manufacturer covers the cost of replacement for vehicle safety.
06/17/2010125890
Failue of opds unit on my 2000 honda accord 4-door v-6. as an outcome of a joint action lawsuit honda agreed to extend the opds warranty to 10 years from the delivery date of the vehicle or 156,000 miles. my opds unit has failed just 3 months after the 10 year extension. this is the 2nd sds system failure as the seat belt sensor has failed in the past. honda now covers the seat belt failure on the many accord models for lifetime as the failure is common. failure of sds airbag system on honda accords and other honda vehicle models is an on-going chronic problem that renders the entire airbag system inactive upon any compoent failure. this is a serious saftey hazzard to owners and due to the high cost to repair the sds system many owners cannot afford to make the sds airbag system operative again. honda must step up to insuring that lifetime warranties on the sds systems are in place for all owners as an sds failure may result in injury or death for the vehicle owners. way too many sds system failures have been documented by honda dealers and owners. who knows just how many red lights are actually on the dashboards of honda accords out there that simply don't get fixed due to the high cost of repair?

I bought a honda accord lx 2000 in 2004 with 46 k on it. shortly thereafter the srs light came on. i was at te dealership to inquire why it was on. they told me it was because my airbag might not deploy in the case of an accident. not able to bear the expense of repair, i have have driven it as is & the current mileage is almost 87,000.
04/02/2010134000
I also have a 2000 honda accord lx with approx. 134,000 miles and the srs indicator light stays on. the authorized honda dealer reported that this was not under a recall per my vin. even a quick search indicates that this is a very common defect with this model and year. honda needs to issue a safty recall on this problem.

Srs airbag light is on. i have looked into this online and there seems to be many complaints pertaining to the same issue. honda says they will not check it for less than 100 dollars. many people seem to have this same problem with similar results! if this is a safety concern affecting multiple cars then an investigation should take place. thank you for your time 2000 honda accord se. 134,000 miles. *tr

Srs light illuminated, airbags will not deploy if involved in accident. this has occurred on our 2000 honda accord with 67k miles on it. we understand that the warranty has been extended for this issue to 10 years or 150k miles, ours is now ten years old. we feel this is unacceptable and that honda should cover this for the lifetime of the vehicle. this is why people buy vehicles with all the airbags...safety! honda should cover this problem no questions asked!! for life.*dt

My 2000 honda accord ex multiplex control unit malfunctioned causing my dash lights to go out and i can't see my dash panel at night ie. speedometer. this is a safety issue and i am a single mom with 2 young kids and haven't owned the car for even a year and less than 10 years old and less than 100,000 miles and nothing i did caused the multiplex control unit to malfunction and there is a recall on this already for 2000 honda accord but american honda has given my several excuses as well as the salesperson at the dealership called and was told a different answer one was with the plant car came from.one was if it was a v6 then one was having an lx model one was with saying the mileage issue or they would fix it. basically just a bunch of bs over and over. they need to honor their recall. honda is supposed to be a safe dependable car and now i have a safety issue with driving and i am nurse and have to use my car for work and oncall but a night can't see the dash lights. i also have my srs light on which is another issue which my total airbag system needs to be replaced with a warranty on it as well but not with my exactly problem which there is another manufacturer malfunction but won't fix as well when nothing i did with either safety issues caused these to malfunction and american honda is aware and has recalls on these but won't honor the recalls with my 2000 honda accord. *tr

2000 4-door honda lx - on or about october 2007, its srs readiness indicator light illuminated. during its regular maintenance service, i took the car to honda santa ana, ca and complained about this situation. the srs light was reset only to find out after 3 days that it came back on. on january 2008 and march 2008, the same situation was handled by santa ana honda and after 6-10 days, the light turned on again and again. i was finally informed that the control panel to the srs unit was defective. because the warranty had expired long after this problem persisted, the service advisor indicated that if santa ana honda were to fix the equipment, it would cost me at least $1,600 which was reduced by 30% by its service manager john marker. it was then that i brought up the case to american north honda motor co inc and was handled by wayne at 1(800) 999-1009 ext. 118198. wayne called and informed me that they are participating to this repair by reducing the cost by $300. it didn't make logical sense to me that the consumer is liable for costs involved in fixing a safety-related device that came with the vehicle. the fact that both santa ana honda and north american honda are both contributing to the costs of this repair, tells me that this is a defect of the vehicle. my family's 1999 toyota camry and friends' 2000 toyota corolla never had their srs worn out in the course of time, why would honda have this problem? please assist me contact honda to carry the burden of this costs or extend the warranty. my current mileage is now 120,000. *tr

I bought my honda accord this september. it had a rebuilt title due to minor dents and blemishes to the outside. no major wrecks. looked and seemed in good condition. dealer assured me that all of his cars were insurance claims due to minor exterior wear. he didn't take any cars that had been involved in wrecks. he was an engineer and didn't need to screw people over for money. i had my mechanic inspect it right away because it had a 30 day return policy, no questions asked. my regular mechanic said the engine was fine but there were minor things i needed such as; new rotors, new tires, and something to do with the emergency brake. his secretary said these were all optional things to have fixed. 1 month later...the radiator goes bad and must be replaced. my regular mechanic charges me $600.00 dollars for the procedure. i compare prices and find a better price for the same radiator. unfortunately, my regular mechanic still charges me $70.00 for his opinion. i go to the cheaper place, get a new radiator and have my rotors replaced. since about 2 weeks after owning the car i notice that the srs airbag light flashes on and off randomly. a $80.00 diagnostic check was performed and nothing showed up. my mechanic didn't notice it when he drove it. i still don't know if my airbags work! a month after that..transmission goes bad when in reverse. makes a terrible grinding of metal sound and lurches when put in reverse. probably needs a new transmission which i have no way to pay for. luckily, it is only a problem during the cold and/or when i first start the engine. im very worried about the safety of my car and myself! because i've had 3 different people assure me the car is in good shape, only to find out about or have a major problem occur. i don't feel safe in my mystery car! i bought a honda after being a loyal toyota customer because i thought they had the best reputation for long lasting vehicles. i'm thinking i made a mistake. please help lessen my worries. *tr

My srs light came on. i believe this is related to a safety item, the airbags of the car. when i called the local dealership (open road honda) they informed me that it would cost 105 just to diagnose the problem then from there it would be additional costs. i read on your website that all safety items should be fixed at no cost. the dealer told me that only safety belts are under that warranty. i'm very unhappy. i looked around some websites and other dealers have fixed it for no cost. why is my local dealer asking me for 105 just to diagnose a safety product on my car? it is unsafe to drive without my airbags on! i am afraid of driving it since one of the reasons why i bought the car was because it has airbags. now they don't work. *jb

My supplemental restraint system (srs) warning light went on. this is serious because when the light is on, honda told me, that the airbags are disengaged. i took the 2006 honda accord sedan v6 to the dealer. the service department told me that there was a service bulletin out on this problem, 02-077 dated dec 17, 2002. i was told it would take $1600 to fix. i read the service bulletin. it states that this problem is due to static electricity problem in the system. as an electrical engineer this means there is a design problem with this vehicle. even though this is a design problem and the bulletin came out while my car was still under warranty, honda, east coast headquarters, has only offered to cover parts. i believe that this not just my problem and that honda needs to issue a recall due to the safety issues related to a srs light. again, when the srs light is on, airbags will not deploy. *jb

Hello i am writing about my honda accord lx, 2000, 4 cylinders. without any reason (while driving the car), the srs light went on. when i checked with the honda dealer from where i purchased the car, they mentioned that the computer that controls the airbags is not working anymore. the cost to fix/replace the computer is $960.00. i research on the internet and there are many honda accord with the same problem. this is a very important safety module that should be fixed by honda and not by the consumer. thank you. *nm

Air bag cel is on thus disable the air bag function in the car. check system results in no apparent problem. reset would clear the problem from 1 day to 1 month, then the cel is re-appeared again. according to the mechanic, the problem is a faulty air bag control module from the manufacture and affect many similar cars within this model year. people on the internet forum are experienced the same thing with this srs warning light. since this is related to the function of vehicle airbag system, this should be a major concern of safety issue. please look into it and advice us....the consumer. so far, the honda dealer does not acknowledge the existing problem and demand an expensive fix in the air bag control module. thank you for your helps. *nm

My car srs indicator light started to come on back in april of 2005. it stays on while my car is on with and without passengers. i finally took my car to a mechanic hoping that they could reset the light. they told me that there is a malfunction in the air bag system and it could deploy at anytime. the mechanic also told me that this is quite common in this make and model. this is very frightening because i bought a honda for their reputation for safety and quality. but to think that my airbags can deploy at anytime i drive or even not working in the case of an accident is very concerning. please investigate this with the honda accord coupe models between 1998-2003. my car is a 2000 v6 honda accord coupe lx. thanks. *nm

At 84,366 miles my car's check engine light came on. took accord to mechanic and was told the egr valve error code appeared. the mechanic said to take to honda due to recall for this part. picked car up from mechanic and car also had srs light on. researched online since i already have recall for dash light. found many other honda owners with same srs light. found out my air bags will not function if sensor illuminated. also, called honda and they said i was beyond the mileage (80k) for the extended warranty on the defective egr valve replacement. asked what honda was doing about the front airbags and was told no decision has been made. i have also discovered my car has the extended warranty for defective/faulty transmission. so when i'm driving down the highway my tranmsmission may give out at high rate of speed and if collsion occurs, my air bags will not deploy. my seat weld joint broke at 54k too! i used a 99 toyota 4runner as replacement vehicle and discovered the seatbelt warning light came on when my 40lb. dog sat in passenger front seat. my accord never has detected my dog in the front seat ever! this car is riddled with safety defects and poor manufacturing. honda should be held responsible for protecting the owners from injury including monetary repairs/ replacement costs for all of these safety defects and engine defects. *nm

Srs light keeps on. i have a 2000 honda accord v6 and have it maintained by o'donnell honda(8620 baltimore national pike, ellicott city, md 21043). in sept. 2005, the srs light began to keep coming on. on oct.18, 2005, i took my car to the o'donnell honda. a representative/technician told me the air bag has no problem but it has a code 15-3 and need to be re-set. i was charged $41.50 for re-setting the srs light. the srs light kept off for about two weeks, then it came back and have kept coming on since then. if i keep taking my car to the dealer, it looks like they will keep charging me for the re-resetting because they said the air bag has no problem. i checked the internet and knew many people have the same problem with accord and civic. i don't think the technicians in the dealer are able to solve this problem. it is the problem in honda car design and specification. if the srs light is on and the air bag has no problem, when the srs light is off, the air bag may have problem?*jb

The srs indicator light came on at 74,000 miles. from reading through the complaints, it seems this is a common problem with 2000 honda accords. it also seems that people have spent a lot of money to try to correct this problem, but with little success. now i have to decide between spending a lot of money, possibly to no avail, or driving an unsafe car with no airbags. please investigate asap and issue a recall, if needed, before someone dies. *nm

Same problem as described in investigation #pe05043. the red srs warning light stuck on in my 2000 honda accord exv6 recently. it is after the warranty expired. there are two lights related to airbag in the car, one red, one orange side airbag off. the orange light comes on and off depends on whether there is a light object on the passenger seat or not. the red light indicates problems and does not goes off even there is nothing on the front passenger seat. it is the first time we saw the red light stuck on in the past 5 years since we bought the car new. from searching the internet, we know the problem is common, and can be recurring. honda has the obligation to fix the design, and recall the cars. please help us! let me know if you need further info regarding my car. *nm

Car: 2000 honda accord 2dr v6 problem: srs light after numerous computer resets, srs light manages to come back on. after taking to dealer, was told on various occasions that it was due to faulty seat-belt sensor. honda did not service due to out-of-warranty, and excessive cost to fix the sensor. seems to be a manufacturer defect due to the nature of failure.

While simply driving, the srs light on the dash turned on for my 2000 honda accord v6. it appears that many people receive the srs light in their hondas, yet few ever go get them fixed. the light has been fixed by the dealer for a whopping ~$400! this is absolutely outrageous. no wonder the people i know that has the srs light don't want to get it fixed. this is a safety hazard for the driver and should be fixed for free! there were no injuries or and crashes in my case, but if there was to be a good sized accident, the airbags will not deploy. the dealer, i believe, replaced the entire driver's seat and the srs sensor. please, this has been a frequent problem with hondas - that the srs light would spontaneously light up. this problem has to be addressed as this is a serious safety hazard.

My 2000 honda accord v-6 has approximately 85,000 miles on it and i have had very few problems. always took to dealer for maintenance/repair. i had the alternator replaced in june 2005, and within 2 weeks of getting the car back, the srs light came on. i called the dealer and they said i should bring the car in right away. i paid $68 to have the system tested and was told i needed to replace the entire computer system for the air bags at a cost of $575, or i could have them reset it and it may or may not come back on. i asked what happens when the light was on and was told that the airbags just won't work. i opted for the reset. now, 2 weeks later, the light is back on. i have done some internet research and have found that not only is this a known problem, but the cures that are suggested by the dealer are all over the map. i find it incredible that honda is not responsible for this defect in a mandated safety device. my family will hold honda responsible if i am injured or killed due to a non-inflating airbag. i do not believe the company is taking the airbag issue seriously. my daughter was thankfully not killed in a serious accident last june in her civic, whose airbags did not deploy when she was hit with such force that it tore the front engine housing off her car and resulted in a total loss. the honda folks told us then that sometimes the car isn't hit the right way and the sensors don't register that the airbags should deploy. i think the same government that requires these devices be installed on all cars (and the ones we pay for when purchasing the cars) should hold the car makers/dealers responsible for making sure they are operable. *nm

Subject: honda 2000 accord srs light safety defect dear administrator: honda dealer at salinas in california performed recall ?ignition lock? work on my car on 3/16/05 (please see attached invoice). after that, the srs (airbags) light remains on my car. my car currently only has 32,600 miles. before the dealer performed the recall work, my car was perfectly fine. i called dealer about this srs light issue. dealer said i have to pay $101 for a computer diagnoses plus extra fee to fix the problem found. i, however, disagree because the srs light was on right after the dealer performed the recall work. before that, my car was in the perfectly shape and never got involve in any accident. as the dealer said, the airbags will not deploy while the srs light is on. i think my car?s srs light issue is caused by either the dealer is unable to remedy the defect in my vehicle or it is another safety defect in honda 2000 accord. therefore, your kind help on my case is greatly appreciated! sincerely, lianghua shu p.s. car info: honda 2000 accord lx 4dr, vin: jhmcg6656yc026366

The airbag warning light (srv) came on, and local garage checked it out on their computer. they came up with a code 9-2 air bag internal fault, and said i would have to take it to the honda dealer for repair. i took it to the honda dealer, and was told that they would have to run their own independent computer check, and, if a fault was found, i would be responsible for the cost of repair. my complaint: first, air bags being such an important safety item, and their installation mandated by the government, i feel that when a defect appears, a recall at the manufacturer's expense is in order. second, if the safety board does not have a sufficient number of similiar complaints to order a recall, then at the very least the manufacturer should be required to pay for the computer test.

I have the known issue with my 2000 honda accord where the srs airbag light stays on. you can do a google search and see the widespread nature of this problem. honda says if the airbag light is on the airbag may not deploy in a accident and others have had the airbag go off while driving normally. when i call my dealer they pretend not to know anything and want tons of money to even check it out. i have the honda care extended warranty and the dealer won't even verify if the problem is covered or not. *jb

Problem began when airbag srs light came on. i brought the car to my mechanic who informed me that the entire airbag system needed to be replaced. a couple months later, the light again turned back on and it turned out that one of the replacement parts was again defective and needed to be replaced again. my mechanic informed me that this was a common problem with the honda's but it was not a recall, i contacted the honda service department and they stated that this was not considered a defect and therefore could not be replaced without charge since my warrantee had run out. in may 2004 my check engine light came on and i was informed by my mechanic that this was a defect within the engine and required the egr to be fixed. i checked online to see if this could be something i could get some recourse on and again it is not a recall even though it is a known problem among honda accords. i just feel like i should have some recourse. within the last year i've had to pay out more than two thousand dollars in charges to have these defective parts fixed. if they are defective they should be replaced by honda free of charge.*ak

My 2000 honda accord has its srs lights on again and will not go off. i brought it to my mechanic who put the car on the computer and said theres a malfunction in my airbags, i have to go to honda ($40.00). i brought the car to honda that same morning (9:30 am), informed them about my mechanic's response & that i commute a distance and don't feel safe driving the car, so they took it in. at 4:30 pm, they decided to put it on the computer and wow...there is a problem with my air bag system ($94.61). no accidents, nothing - it just came on while i was driving. honda told me not to worry, that my airbag isn't just going to go off as i drive down the highway.....it just won't go off if you crash. real safety feature of the car. my diagnosis: code 9-3...drivers seat belt buckle failure (estimated cost to repair: $287.00 plus tax on top of the initial $94.00 i just gave them). this is 100% a safety issue and should absolutely be hondas responsibility. how can i be certain that they have not always been broken? this is totally ridiculous and i am appalled at honda's ignorance to this matter. *ak

I discovered there is a recall on 2000 honda accords that pertain to airbags not deploying. my research discovered that the first sign there is a problem with the airbags is the srs light on the dash comes on & stays on. this happened to my 2000 honda accord. 1 week ago i contacted emily in the service dept at rock honda in fontana ca. i was told my vin did not apply to the recall. i explained that my car is experiencing the same problem as the cars that were recalled. i asked how they could know for absolute sure that my airbag is not defective based on a vin number. an answer was never provided. after pushing the issue emily scheduled an appointment with me to have the car looked at free of charge. emily told me that she would for sure see me on the scheduled day and to make sure that i talk to her. at the time of the appointment it was found that emily had gone on vacation w/o informing me about my scheduled appointment possibly needing to be changed, nor did she leave any info for the service members about my situation. i was told to just inspect the car it would cost $75 and since the srs light is on there is definitely something wrong w/ my airbag and it would cost an additional $800 to fix. honda said that they will not fix my car free of charge because of my vin number, even though they are aware that there is indeed a serious safety problem w/ defective airbags in the 2000 honda accords. it was also found that since my car is a canadian honda, but was sold to me brand new in so. california at rock honda, that american honda will not deal with the situation and have been told that canadian honda cannot force a u.s. dealership to fix the problem. my concern is i drive 6 days a week to & from work. a 1 way trip is 45 minutes long in heavy stop & go traffic. i'm extremely scared i will have an accident & will be injured because my airbags will not deploy. i feel lucky in the 3 & half years i've owned the car i have not yet had an accident. *ak

Summary:on the 2000 honda accord after having problems with the alternator the air bags would be useless in a crash unless honda services the vehicle and erases the failure code the computer is reporting. *ak i recently had the alternator in my 2000 accord ex v6 replaced because it was not working. after it was replaced the srs (air bag) light was on and would not turn off. i then went to the local honda service center and they told me that because the alternator was not powering the computer that controls the airbags with the correct voltage it triggered the failure light. i was then told that while the light is on the air bags are disabled and would not be deployed in the event of a crash. i then told the employee that this was the stupidest thing i have ever heard, and is there any way to reset the system. i was told the car would have to be serviced and hooked up to their computer system to reset the cars internal computer (at a cost of $89.00). i set up an appointment to have this done next week but got to thinking how this is truly a safety issue. the system should reset itself when everything is normal so the consumer does not have to drive around in a car with air bags that do not deploy in the event of a crash. to have the car disable this vital part of its safety features because the voltage dropped below a certain point makes no sense. i can see it detecting an error but then when everything is back to normal it should reset. now the car is working perfectly but because the computer detected that one error now the air bags will not work at all until honda resets it (and takes $89.00).

Srs light remained consistently on for several days for no apparent reason. dealer noted the electronic sensor in the passenger seat might be affected by electronic equipment (ex. cell phone, laptop) or the control module might be defective. the srs system is not covered by any warranty beyond the normal 3yr/36k miles... since this is a life safety system that was properly installed, shouldn't it be covered like the seat belts with a lifetime warranty? no other explanation was given as to the cause of the srs light remaining on for several days. *jb

When i first purchased my vehicle, a 2000 honda accord coupe ex v6, the passenger seat will not lock into place after moving the seat forward so that rear passengers can enter or exit the vehicle, therefore posing an extreme safety hazard to front passenger occupants. i have told my dealership, ed voyles honda (miki mullinax is my service advisor) about this since i first purchased the vehicle and i was told that this is just normal. i don't understand how a condition that is potentially so dangerous can be just normal. also, my srs indicator has come on for no particular reason and i explained this to my dealership, after looking at the technical service bulletin on this website, and they were going to have me pay a diagnostic fee to see if this was true or not. i actually also had an instance of the failed mil which was resolved by my dealer yesterday (honda service bulletin #00-017). please advise on these issues. thanks. jody kell ps: the incident date that i am using is the day that i purchased the vehicle, which is when the seat issue first began.

The dashboard light labeled srs illuminated around 34,500 miles. according to the provided owners manual the entire system is non-functional as indicated by the srs light. i had the system examined by the dealer and they diagnosed the problem as a failed passenger position sensor, located within the right side of the passenger seat. the dealer fixed everything but the sensor, claiming that it was my responsibility to repair it because it wasn't covered under the warranty. seeing that the airbag system is overall safety of the car, which composed a significant portion of my reasoning to buy the vehicle i advised them to replace the part, at approximately $500 only to be told that it was on back order. the airbag system will not function as a result of the failure of this position sensing component and severely compromises the overall safety of the vehicle for all occupants. i filed a complaint with the company and did not hear anything until i personally followed up, only to be told that i would have to pay for the repair, when the part arrived. currently, my srs system is inoperative from no fault of my own. i don't think that honda should market, install and sell such a system if they can not seem to get it to function correctly for at least 35000 miles if they are not willing to stand behind it, aside from the fact the possibility of a severe injury has now increase by and exponential amount, what consumers pay to prevent and insurance companies offer discounts to promote, due to the malfunction of the factory installed defective components. seeing the fact that the supply is insufficent to meet the demand for the part leads me to believe that my vehicle is not the only one with this problem, and not the only whose safety of both passengers and driver a like is being compromised without the proper function of the purchased system. dt

On four different occaisions, the srs light (air bag) goes on. it remains on. each time, we have taken it to three different honda dealership. they claim that they fix it. within a few days, the light goes on again. it is now in a honda shop in orlando. the service department told her that some hondas are having this problem and they don't know how to fix it. he told her that the air bags may not deploy during a crash. therefore the car has no safety value. they also told her that a palm pilot, laptop computer or cell phone can be used in the front seat. honda must recall these cars and fix the airbag or replace the car. *ak

I have taken my honda into the dealership 5 times because the srs light comes on and stays on. the third visit to the service dealer, they detected that the sensor was malfunctioning and a replacement part would be ordered. one month later, the part arrived, was installed, and the light came back on. upon my return, the service dealer (clair honda) informed me that the honda tech line said that honda is aware of the problem, instructed the service dealer to reset the light and told the dealer that a replacement part may be ready in june, at which time honda is planning a recall. in the meantime my airbags will not deploy, and i will have been without functioning airbags for over a year. being that i drive 25000 miles a year, i am very upset at the lack of response from honda. i bought this car for its safety features and am disappointed that honda will not stand behind this.*ak

The srs light stays on. not sure if airbags will work in a collision. dealer will try to fix with new srs control modules. speedometer head unit is up to 13% off (depending on speed) and is somewhat unresponsive to minor speed changes. disconcerting while driving in traffic since i can't verify my actual speed due to the slow to respond and inaccurate speedometer unit readout. this leads to overaccelerating or overdeccelerating while driving in traffic in an attempt to hold local speed zone laws. verified by a pgm test at local dealer. no fix for the speedometer head unit for now...told by honda customer relations to wait for a possible fix in november 2000. the driver's power seat makes a clunking noise while driving, not sure why. finally, while driving in traffic many times when i press the accelerator pedal the car does not respond very quickly or even falls flat for a second before it goes, pretty disconcerting at times, especially at intersections.

Srs sensor light has been on for about half a year now continuously without apparent reason. dealer previously replaced the opds unit (about 2 years ago) and prior to that reset it a few times, but now the car's warranty has expired and srs light is on again. dealer now wants to charge a $75 inspection fee plus $400-$700 to replace the unit, a unit that mind you was already supposed to have been replaced. worried air bags will not properly deploy in the event of a wreck and also that our car will not pass annual state dot inspection. with the exceedingly high number of issues with this same problem, hopefully honda will have to do a recall to fix these units once and for all. *tr

I own a 2000 honda accord ex-v6. my srs light has come on twice now. the first time i had it reset by the dealer, and it cost me $100. they also claimed it was my front impact sensor. this vehicle has not been bumped or had an accident since i have owned it, so i fail to see how that could break. now, the second time, the srs light has again come on and has been on my dash for several months. i am fairly certain that i will not have a functional driver's side airbag if ever i am hit. this is a huge safety issue. i have read several similar complaints about this srs light situation on your site and many others. i believe that this problem warrants a recall, as the dealer is set to charge me close to $400 to replace the sensor and still cannot guarantee this will fix the problem in the long-term. since this is so prevalent, why is this not a priority??? this should be a recall or some sort of campaign, because frankly, many of us feel very unsafe. *jb updated 01/02/08. *lj updated 12/12/07 *tr

Without any reason whatsoever, srs light came on and dealer would not even diagnose the problem without a substantial payment. i've read on the web that many honda users experience this problem around 100k miles. air bags are federally mandated safety equipment like seatbelts. seatbelts are covered by life-time warranty and so should be the air bags. the customer should not have to pay for failures of life-saving equipment that is not due to wear and tear or accident. *tr

The srs unit for airbag deployment has failed on my 2000 honda accord lx with 104,000 miles. the honda dealers want ~$740.00 to replace this unit as there is no extended warranty or coverage beyond the manufacturers 36/36 factory warranty. considering the essential necessity of this unit it seems unreasonable for this unit should fail within 104,000 miles and in less than 6 years. i had today 3 different honda dealerships tell me today that it can be expected that these units will begin failing at 100,000 miles! how can this be the case? isn't it reasonable to expect the safety of the airbags being deployed in a car that is in very good condition mechanically and structurally to continue for a much longer period? isn't it also to be expected that early failure of this unit should be covered either fully or partially by honda? it is reasonable to think so. i also own a 1992 and a 1994 honda accord with the same srs unit with no failures having occurred. i would like the nhtsa to investigate this matter as to premature failure occurring. *nm

I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden a car cut in front of me. then the flow of traffic came to a complete halt. i applied my brakes. the car that cut me off, moved out from the lane i was on into the next lane. i was involved in a rear end collision with honda crv. my honda accord 2000 received major damage . the front srs airbags never functioned. this collision took place in the freeway at least 40 miles per hour. the front airbags didn't work. the honda dealership that i took my car for repairs which came out to five thousand dollars, told me that the reason the airbags didn't work was because it was not a direct hit, in other words they didn't want to be held responsible for checking the airbags or replacing them. they stated, that there was no recall from honda on the airbags. the community honda dealership just replaced the parts that where damaged in the collision. the front end of the car was damaged badly, it was pushed back approximately 3 feet. i was lucky, not to have had serious injuries. however, i don't trust the front airbags because they should of functioned and they didn't. i, strongly believe that honda motors u.s.a. should correct the problem with the airbags at no charge. someone should investigate this problem with this vehicle the honda accord se 2000. vehicle # jhmcg6694yc020908. thank you. *jb

My 2000 honda accord ex is approaching 130,000 miles. the other day the srs light came on and has stayed on ever since. after some research i found that honda had extended the warranty on the opds sensor and belt assembly. i went to a dealership and had them diagnose the problem. they found that it was the controller unit which had failed. i asked how a solid state computer component would fail other than defect and they said they did not know. i believe that a key safety feature such as this on a car should be covered under an extended warranty. especially since they have extended the warranty on related components acknowledging that there are defects in the srs system. *tr

I own a 2000 honda accord se and the srs indicator illuminated causing me to take into my honda mechanic. he ran a diagnostic and discovered a temporary code 09-03 indicates a malfunction in the drivers seat belt switch. this cost me $75. he scanned the engine computer for stored codes and retrieved the temporary code 09-03 occurred 14 times over 157 key cycles. felt problem was very intermittent and reset should last a while or never return. not more than a few days later, the srs illuminated. called mechanic and he said to bring the car in and we will reset; no charge. this back-and-forth continued for a while until it just became completely inconvenient and had to consider how to fix. options were to: 1) replace the seat belt buckle on an educated guess with no guarantee this will solve the problem. cost: $250. 2) continue the test procedures they have and remove seat and disassembling the seat cover to inspect the seat belt wiring, again with no guarantee. cost: $225. i have not selected either option as i feel it is a honda defect and should be covered by them. *jb

Since year 2000 i have been bringing my honda accord to honda service center for maintenance and repairs. the srs light had been going off and when i took the car to honda of concord, they just reset the srs light and blamed my cell phone as the possible reason. since then i avoided placing my cell phone on the passenger seat but the srs light would still turn on after couple of weeks. i have inquired from them if it was a defect and they said no. this has been going on until in 2004 when i took my car to honda of oakland when they decided that it was the opds that was faulty and they changed it (charged me $700.00). after a week that it was changed, the srs light turned on again, and every maintenance service time they just reset the light. 2 weeks ago, honda of oakland told me that they will replace the opds sensor and will refund me of the $700 that i paid last year. am supposed to bring my car on tuesday march 28, 2006 to honda of oakland service center so they can change the opds. they now claim that it is covered by 5 year warranty (last year they said it wasn't covered). i haven't missed any maintenance service for more than 5 years now and on every visit i have complained about this srs light malfunction. what's the best thing i should do? *jb

I have been to the honda dealer/service 4 times to fix a srs malfunction. today i went to the spirit honda service department because srs light was on. the assistant service advisor claimed the technician could find no hard problems, which would result in the srs light turning on. he originally blamed me, but when questioned he retracted. then, charged $43 dollars for a problem, which he could not figure out. honda accord is under warranty for 5 more months. the cost for repair at that time will be overwhelming. as the srs problem has been a recurring . the consistent failure of the srs on 2000 honda accord coupe is a problem that should be investigated. the monetary loss, which i have incurred maybe due to a problem caused by the manufacturer. when i did a search on srs problems for honda accords i found i am not alone. there seems to be a significant portion of consumers who have an srs problem. it should be investigated by honda. *ak

I own a 2000 honda accord ex. my srs light came on at approximately 80,000 miles. my warranty expired at 75,000 miles. according to the honda dealership, they have tried to re-set the unit but it will have to be replaced. i have spoken to another honda accord owner at the dealership who states the same thing has happen to him but he had the unit replaced. according to your website, i see that this problem is happening to a lot of honda owners. *jb

The srs light on my car has suddenly appeared and will not turn off. the dealer explained that it was probably a bad opds sensor because they have been receiving several complaints about it. i chose not to opt for the $600 repair. perhaps also related is the fact that my side air bag indicator turns on frequently whenever a passenger shifts his weight to one side of the seat--it goes away once he moves back to the center of the front seat. it is a however a nuisance and is not what i expect from honda. *nm

I have a srs light that continues to come on in my 2000 honda accord ex v6. i see that this is a common problem and honda is not doing anything about it except charge people ridiculous prices to fix something that is a safety concern. one of the reasons i purchased the car was because it was suppose to be one of the safest, boy was i wrong. i travel over 500 miles a week and my family depends on me to come home everyday. god forbid i have an accident and the airbags don't deploy. please look into this issue because the web is flooded with complaints and concerns. *jb

The srs light is lit on the dashboard of my 2000 honda accord ex. i took the car to my local dealer where they told me it would be $84 for a diagnostic of the problem. the dealer then called to tell me that the opds sensor is not working and it would need to be replaced. while the car was at the dealer, i got on the internet and researched the srs light on accords. i found out there is a service bulletin, dated april 23, 2004, issued by honda for all 2000 2-door accords (as well as many other models) declaring the srs indicator comes on with srs dtc 15-1, 15-2, 15-3 , and probable cause is a faulty occupant position detection system (opds) unit. with that said, both the dealer and american honda motor co., are aware of the service bulletin, and the faulty parts they sold in their automobiles and neither are willing to replace the opds sensor. *nm

Srs warning light on 2000 honda accord ex v6 keeps on activating. i have sent my car to a local auto repair shop to have the car diagnosed on august 30, 2005. the mechanic, who is a master diagnostic technician and manager of the repair shop informed me he did not detect anything wrong, but a false alarm. he reset the srs system. again, the srs warning light came back on 2 days later and brought back my car to have the srs warning light reset on september 2, 2005. i found an article on the web indicating the honda accord having problems with the srs warning light. http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2005/08/17/140535.html. *jb

In sept. 2003 the srs warning light came on. after contacting the dealer who said the unit fails test we were informed this might involve replacement parts which would not be under warranty. since this was a 2000 honda accord ex with only 49000 miles i felt this was an unwarranted repair. american honda agreed to cover the repair. the srs control unit was replaced on 10/3/03. on 10/8/03 we brought the car back to the dealer because the srs light had come back on. this time the dealer said we needed a new seat buckle. this was replaced on 10/22/03. in (approximately) july 2005 the srs light came on again. we contacted our auto repair shop and were told we would probably have to replace the unit again. this does not seem normal to have such a part fail so often. also, the side airbag light would often come on, if a purse or bag was on our side next to the door. to date we have not brought the car in to be repaired again but are concerned that we don't know if the airbags will deploy in an accident.*jb

I bought my 2000 honda accord brand new, off the lot. two months after purchasing it, my srs light went on. i called the salesperson who assured me that it was just a dashboard defect in that make and model -- nothing to worry about. at least once each year since, i've had to pay over $100 because the light came on again and the problem had to be re-diagnosed before the light was shut off. i've grown so used to having the light on and it just being a dashboard nuisance, i've come to ignore it. that was until this morning, when a honda service person informed me that when it is on -- simple defect or not -- the airbags will not release during an accident. what if, based on the information -- or lack of information i've been given in the last five years -- i had an accident and no air bags deployed? how many other people are in this situation? a lot from the looks of the complaints filed on this site, along with complaints on the srs issue posted on the internet overall. if it was simply a dashboard malfunction -- as it has been positioned to me in the past -- that would be one thing. but, when i called honda's 800 number to confirm what the service rep told me and learned that he is correct -- the airbags will not deploy if that light is on...it is not just a simple dashboard issue...i want to make sure others know. *jb

Took 2000 honda accord exl to dealer for maintenance. upon leaving the dealership the srs airbag light came on. i took it back and they told me i needed a new module/airbag brain and that without it my airbags may not deploy. i told them that light had never come on before until after they worked on my car, they told me that was a coincidence and that they were no where near that part of the vehicle. they did a diagnostic free of charge and told me the error code. they quoted me $600 to replace the module. i went to a different dealer for a 2nd opinion not trusting the 1st place and they turned off the srs light model # 77960-584-a93057. i tried to purchase the part used, but no one sold it. i called around and the most affordable place i could find quoted me $390. i took it in and had it replaced and the light has not come on since. the incident occured in 9/10/03. i was looking up recalls and found that many other owners have had the same problem i had. i also have a problem with the backseat seatbelt not working and the recalls on the seatbelt are for the civic and not the accord. now i am making an appointment for the ignition switch. i also have a problem everytime i start the car the gas pedal sticks and you have to gun it to make it go forward.

The red srs light came on and stayed on for a period of two weeks. during this time, the car went to the dealership for diagnostic. they could not find any problems and cited that perhaps electronic equipment near the driver seat was causing interference of some kind. that doesn't make sense, as i have a 2000 (honda accord cpe ex v6) and have always had a cell phone and not had problems till now. the dealership reset the light and it has not come up since. but i have read that this problem has happened with other cars. i feel a recall should be done. this is an issue that can be potentially serious during an accident if the airbags were not to deploy. the dealership said that it could mean anything from the front or side airbags. i don't think that they should take that risk.*ak

The srs light will not go out. the first time this happened was while we were on vacation and a dealer in fl checked it and reset w/out charge. tech said it may have been caused by placing cell phone on passenger seat. if it came on again, it may have been caused by a defective sensor. i have refrained from having the cell phone on the seat since then (may 03). this past sunday the srs light came back on and will not go out. my dealer's service department stated that since the car has 44,000 miles and was out of warrenty, it would cost $70 to run diagnostics. he did not know for sure, but the cause may be a defective sensor. my concern is that when the srs light is on it means that the air bags are disabled. this is a safety feature and one that is necessary. i checked the edmunds web site and noted there were quite a few complaints about the srs light.

I have taken my 2000 honda accord into the dealership multiple times because the side airbag light will intermittently come on and stay on while driving, thereby disabling the side airbag system. this occurs mostly when nobody is sitting in the passenger seat. i have taken this to three honda dealers and each and every one says that they don't know how to fix it. what do i do? i bought the car because of the protection the side bags offered, yet they seem to be inoperative a lot of the time and nobody knows how to fix them.*ak
