PE02072HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)10/02/200203/28/2003SEAT FRAME BRACKET FAILURE
This pe was opened based on 10 consumer complaints in the odi database alleging that the power assisted seats were failing in certain 1998-2002 honda accord vehicles.failures are concentrated in the 1998-99 model year vehicles.the bracket that attaches the seat bottom to the seat base is fracturing due to: 1-the weld condition of bracket, 2-the drivers weight, and 3-the impact on the seat when the driver enters the vehicle and sits down.over time the bracket that attaches the seat may fail at the left front corner of the seat bottom.the other 3 points of attachment of the seat bottom to the seat base stay attached and the seat movement is limited.the attachment of the seat bottom to the seat back does not fail.the condition is most apparent during rapid acceleration causing the seat to tilt rearward.although a few complaints report concern over loss of vehicle control, no loss of control incidents, crashes or injuries are reported.in response to customer complaints, honda will provide owners of 1998 and some 1999 accords a no-cost reinforcement for the seat at the left front corner.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Front drivers seat came loose, causing the seat to suddenly lean back as my wife was backing out of our garage. it could have been disasterous if our driveway wasn't as long as it is. it took her a while to readjust herself (seat was moving under her) to get her foot back on the brake pedal - when the seat reared back. upon inspection, the mounting bracket that attaches the driver seat assembly on the left front corner has broken where the bracket bends up to mount to the seat assembly. it looks like metal fatigue. it is amazing how thin guage metal was used for the mounting bracket? we are the original owners of the car ; the car has been very well cared for and has not endured any hard conditions or accidents. this is a major safety issue and could have been even more disasterous has she been involved in an actual accident. it scares me to think of how many 2000 honda accords may be out there with the bracket that has metal fatigue and will not hold up in the event of a colision. i noticed there are a number of similar complaints on the internet (exactly the same thing occuring) and there was a previous investigation done in 2003 ( # pe02072), i believe the investigation should be re-opened asap, especially considering how many older honda accords are still on the road. this failure looks to be a gradual in nature and appears directly related to metal fatigue of a thin gauge metal used on the bracket. the high leverage forces caused by passengers pushing back on their seat back ( e.g., getting in the car, or pulling something from their pockets while sitting) will take a toll on the thin metal bracket; eventually the bracket it will fail and most likely at a time when the integrity of the bracket is needed most (during an accident) for passenger safety.

After going over a bump in the road the front seat came un-welded on the front left side, causing the seat to tilt back and forth. dealer told me that they could not fix it, it needed to be welded. auto repair said that it couldn't be welded, i needed at least a new seat frame ($300-$400) or possibly a whole new seat ($800-$900).*tr

2000 accord sedan, bracket that attaches driver's seat bottom to seat base fractured at left front while driving over bumpy railroad crossing, causing seat to lurch back, nearly resulting in loss of vehicle control. now, seat lurches back with every acceleration of the vehicle. honda states that there is no recall or warranty action available and states that nhtsa action number pe02072 is inapplicable as there is no recall code for my vin in their internal system. their only proposed correction action is a $ 1,500 plus replacement of the seat track, at my expense. *tr

Driver seat welding has loosened requiring a replacement of the entire seat including the seat mount. i was advised that it could not be rewelded but would need the entire seat including the seat mount completely replaced. my vehicle failed safety inspection due to the seat coming loose therefore a brake test cannot be completed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. while driving at an unknown speed, the weld in the front driver's seat fractured, which caused the seat to move excessively without warning. the risk of a serious crash or injury was increased. the contact took the vehicle to a certified welder, who welded the seat to its proper position. months later, the failure recurred. she took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that she would have to purchase a new seat assembly at the cost of $800. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer did not assist. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 83,000 and current mileage was 90,000.

Dt*: the contact stated the driver side seat was loose on the floor base. the vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop who determined the seat adjustor bracket that attached the seat to the seat base was fractured and needed to be welded back onto the base. the manufacturer was alerted.

Passenger side seat will not lock into position. on several occasions, passengers have been thrown forward in the seat when stopping abruptly with the seat belt tightening to a severely uncomfortable state. this has been reported to the dealer on 2 occasions - each time they report there is no problem. *nm

At 84,366 miles my car's check engine light came on. took accord to mechanic and was told the egr valve error code appeared. the mechanic said to take to honda due to recall for this part. picked car up from mechanic and car also had srs light on. researched online since i already have recall for dash light. found many other honda owners with same srs light. found out my air bags will not function if sensor illuminated. also, called honda and they said i was beyond the mileage (80k) for the extended warranty on the defective egr valve replacement. asked what honda was doing about the front airbags and was told no decision has been made. i have also discovered my car has the extended warranty for defective/faulty transmission. so when i'm driving down the highway my tranmsmission may give out at high rate of speed and if collsion occurs, my air bags will not deploy. my seat weld joint broke at 54k too! i used a 99 toyota 4runner as replacement vehicle and discovered the seatbelt warning light came on when my 40lb. dog sat in passenger front seat. my accord never has detected my dog in the front seat ever! this car is riddled with safety defects and poor manufacturing. honda should be held responsible for protecting the owners from injury including monetary repairs/ replacement costs for all of these safety defects and engine defects. *nm

The front driver seat broke from track and caused driver to move freely even with seat belt on. this occurred at approximately 54k on my accord. it broke when my father (200 lbs) reached in his front pocket to retrieve his wallet. took to mechanic and they removed seat and had to weld seat back. i have seen other accord owners with similar seat malfunction and the potential injury this could cause if in a collision to driver. the seat should not break so easily and with only 54k on vehicle either. *nm

Passenger seat does not lock into place causing seat to fly forward when brakes are applied. i have taken the car to the dealer to be repaired twice. they replaced the track the seat slides on. the seat still slides forward, and they said this is just normal. i am considering a lawsuit. *jb

The back of driver's side front seat fell off approximately 1 year ago. a bolt was tightened and the seat seemed ok, but then became loose. car was at dealer for regular servicing a few months ago and was told this was normal. last week seat back became very loose and when car was in for regular service i asked them to look at it and was told bracket would have to be replaced at cost of approximately $800. after much protest, dealer claimed they needed to contact the manufacturer. later that day they agreed to replace at no cost as good will gesture and scheduled repair for next day. after doing some research, i found out that this is a known problem on both the accord and civic and there is a nhtsa pending. ref action # pe02072. i also own a saturn and it was recalled for a similar seat bracket problem . honda should be required to correct this problem with a recall. *jb

When i first purchased my vehicle, a 2000 honda accord coupe ex v6, the passenger seat will not lock into place after moving the seat forward so that rear passengers can enter or exit the vehicle, therefore posing an extreme safety hazard to front passenger occupants. i have told my dealership, ed voyles honda (miki mullinax is my service advisor) about this since i first purchased the vehicle and i was told that this is just normal. i don't understand how a condition that is potentially so dangerous can be just normal. also, my srs indicator has come on for no particular reason and i explained this to my dealership, after looking at the technical service bulletin on this website, and they were going to have me pay a diagnostic fee to see if this was true or not. i actually also had an instance of the failed mil which was resolved by my dealer yesterday (honda service bulletin #00-017). please advise on these issues. thanks. jody kell ps: the incident date that i am using is the day that i purchased the vehicle, which is when the seat issue first began.

The vehicle is a 2000 honda accord. the drivers power seat bracket has broke. this is the front left corner. this is a power seat. i think the weld failed. i will take it to a shop for repair and reinforcement. i believe this is a very serious condition and would cause injury or death in a collision. i think this is a part that should never fail. incidentally, i am not obese. i weigh 215 pounds and am a 6 ft tall male.

Front passenger seat has for 3 years failed to lock into place after the front seat is moved forward to allow access in the backseat. my wife was sitting in the front seat and upon a abrupt stop he seat accelerated forward and she hit her head on the front windshield. even with a seat belt on this dangerous defect could not prevent bodily injury to my wife. the manufactuer states that even after looking at this seat several time, it is operational as expected.*ak
