VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I was driving my honda accord on a residential street, when the transmission started to shift erratically. the d4 light started to flash and the 'check engine' light came on. the honda dealership that serviced the vehicle told me that the transmission had failed. this from a car that i had purchased six weeks earlier. luckily the incident happened on a vacant road and not a highway on-ramp where smooth shifting is a life or death scenario.

I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). when i was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. i was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as i had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. my leg was also in the break pedal as i made those turns after getting into the private property from il rte 83. i can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. it all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. the car came to halt only after hitting the building. both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. it was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. it was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, i was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. i am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with honda accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike. *tr

This is a report of an incident of unintended acceleration of a motor vehicle which is related to an accident which occurred on march 9, 2011. the vehicle involved is a 2000 honda accord se. the driver was reversing out of a parking space when the engine revved up and the car started to move backward very fast. the driver stepped on the brake and tried to put the vehicle in neutral but the vehicle went into drive and lurched forward at a very high rate of speed uncontrollably across the sidewalk, three(3) lanes of traffic, through a lawn where it first struck a brick building, removed a 30-inch landscape boulder, and then struck a second building which stopped it, traveling over 200 feet before coming to a halt in a public alley. all of this happened in only a few seconds and the driver could not stop the vehicle because the brakes did not help. it was a miracle that the driver was not hit or killed going across the highway. it is very important that this incident be investigated

I was traveling in reverse for approximately 50 yards at a speed of under 5 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. my passenger was able to shift the car into nuetral as i stepped on the brake. the car idled at a high rpm for 2-3 seconds after it stopped. i have experienced this situation on 4 or 5 prior occasons over the past several years but this was the first time it happened while backing. the last time i experienced a sudden acceleration was in sept. 2006; a dealer mechanical inspection at that time checked the tcm/pcm for dtc and found no stored codes.

 1. the events leading up to the failure: 133k miles on 2000 honda accord, 4 door, lx 4cyl, 5 spd manual trans. i'm the original owner, purchased in nov of 1999. car has been driven daily 15-30 miles with no problems. regular maintenance has been performed. the car is in excellent condition. 2. the failure, how often it occurs, it's consequences: on 8/3/10, started to drive to work. after 2 miles, i came to a stop light. when the light turned green, i accelerated. when i went to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine over-reved - up to the rev limiter, even though i had taken my foot off the accelerator in order to shift. i coasted with the clutch depressed while the engine bounced off the rev limiter for a second. then i shut the engine off. i could not un-stick the throttle -which was stuck in wot (wide open throttle) position. 3. what was done to correct the failure; i.e, parts repaired or replaced (and if old part is available)? i tried to lift the throttle off the floor, it was stuck. i removed the floor mat, which made no difference. i then opened the hood. i could see the throttle cables were slack and that the throttle body was stuck. the part of the throttle body which holds the cruise control accelerator cable had broken. when i stepped on the accelerator, the cable (no longer held in place) flopped forward and jammed the throttle open. untangling the jammed throttle body, and securing the cruise control throttle cable to a location where it could not come loose, allowed the throttle body to work again. used throttle bodies are available - $135 +/-. new throttle bodies are available $400 approx. labor is 1-2 hours to replace. very dangerous condition. easy for me to repeat this. i have not repaired this yet. i called the dealership - they wanted to see it. i took it to my mechanic, he verified that the throttle body broke (failed) in a troubling way.

At 3 pm i drove down to pick up mail (from car window) at the end of pipestem. backed up turning right to make u turn for return. straightened wheels and started forward to begin left turn on narrow road, a maneuver i have performed dozens of times. car accelerated despite immediate braking and ran off embankment into woods. unable to stop i deliberately hit a tree to avoid driving into pond. triple a pulled the car out of the woods and craftsman auto body of chantilly (va) did the repairs. i assumed it had been a glitch in the accelerator but could not prove it. i now practice throwing the car into neutral from time to time in case it happens again. recent newspaper reports of similar cases induced me to make this report. *tr

I have a 2000 honda accord with around 117,000 miles and have had issues of the accelerator sticking for at least a year but never thought too much off it until yesterday when pulling into a parking spot in a parking garage. as i was pulling in my gas pedal stuck and jerked my car forward into a cement wall. i was applying the brakes but the car would not stop. the force of the impact threw my car into neutral from drive, my stereo is now sunken into my dashboard, i hit my head on the roof of my car and my knee went into the dashboard. (the airbag did not deploy which is also a little concerning with how much damage there is to my car) my front bumper is scratched and cracked and it has separated from the front passenger side panel. when i called honda to have them look at it they quoted me at least $200 diagnoses the problem. *tr

To whom it may concern. we bought a new 2000 model year honda accord in nov. 1999. at 22k miles (may-july 2001), the gas pedal git stuck when the car was not used for a while, like first thing in the morning. we had to step on it hard and released quickly. then it was good for the rest of the day. we report this to the dealer (leith honda). they fixed it and i have the report. a few months ago this problem re-occured. we have about 44k miles now. leith honda charged me $85 to fix it. they did not charge us the first time. their reason is that my car is out of warranty and this sticky gas pedal problem is caused by gasoline. they further claimed that all other vehicles have the same problem because of the gasoline. they told me that i have to bring the car it and clean the throttle body on a regular basis. otherwise this sticky gas pedal problem will continue to occur. i have so many car in the last 25 years and never heard of this kind of news. i am very concerned about the safety caused by the sticky gas pedal. what would you recommend me to do to fix the problem? i have names of the service manager and mechanic who performed the cleaning. i also have report on hand which show the repair work. please contact me if you need more info and fact. thanks for your looking into this matter. best ragards, kien. *ak
