Defect SummaryHonda is recalling certain model year 2003 honda accord, civic two and four door, and model year 2003-2004 honda element vehicles. the interlock lever of the ignition switch may unexpectedly deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
Consequence SummaryRemoval of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will remove the original interlock pin and lever within the ignition switch, and replace them with new, designed components. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall began on october 7, 2010. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

On august 4, 2010, american honda motor co. (honda) submitted a defect information report (dir) to nhtsa regarding a ignition interlock defect in approximately 384,220 model year (my) 2003 honda accord and civic and my 2003 and 2004 honda element vehicles with automatic transmissions (recall 10v-364).in a september 22, 2010 supplemental dir, honda expanded the scope of the recall population based on manufacturing and complaint data.the total population for the complete recall is approximately 551,498 vehicles.the information listed in this closing report refers only to the subject vehicles, my 2003 accords with automatic transmissions.according to honda's dir, under certain conditions the interlock lever of the ignition switch may unexpectedly deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated if the driver does not follow the typical shut-down procedure of shifting the gear selector to the park position before rotating the ignition key to the off position. removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.honda's dealers will be instructed to inspect the ignition interlock switch and, if necessary, replace the original interlock pin and lever within the ignition switch and replace them with new, redesigned parts.this investigation is closed.

The radio comes on without a key and abruptly turns off when driving. the car appears on when no one is in the vehicle and i am worried that this may prompt someone to steal the car. it also drains the battery. i have researched the internet and called honda. honda swears that no one else has submitted this issue. my ref number for my complaint is n012013-02-2600454. it just doesn't make sense that all these people are having the same issue, but they don't issue a recall. you can do a simple google search and find hundreds of complaints and people saying that they have contacted honda.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 honda accord. while parked, the contact stated the gear lever was in the drive position; however the ignition key would release upon engaging. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where a repair was performed under a manufacturer's voluntary recall (ignition key: interlock switch). three days later after the recall remedy was performed the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the appropriate failure mileage was 48,116. js

The console light which displays the radio/cd player, and all temperature controls (ac, heat, defroster, etc.) does not work. i understand the warranty was extended to seven years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. unfortunately, i have exceeded those limits. however, this is a safety problem/defect and should be fixed. the dealer quoted a price of $1,000. *tr

For a couple of weeks the radio would give a snapping sound and then go silent. on or about the third week, just after starting the car, and turning the radio on, smoke started to pour from behind the dash in the area of the center console. i immediately turned off the radio. the smoke (fire?) stopped . . . . not sure whether turning off the radio or whether the wire, circuit board or (?) had burned through. *tr

Last year, i was driving my 2003 honda accord, and i locked my car as i was riding. upon reaching my home i tried to unlock my car and it would not unlock manually, by pushing the bottom, or with the keyless entry. when i tried to use the interior button to unlock the car, it locked all of the doors and the driver door would not unlock manually, however, i was finally able to get a passenger door unlocked manually. it seemed like i was in a horror movie because the passenger doors would appear to unlock, but they would instantly relock. this happened more than a few times and i was terrified to drive in fear of a accident as well as the fact that i had to leave my car unlocked when i went out in public. today, the issue started again. i tried to hold the keyless entry down so that the windows would roll down and i could gain access that way, but it was to no avail. i tried using the key, but that did not work. i just so happen that while trying to unlock it with the key i turn it (the key) in the opposite direction and held it and the windows rolled down with allowed me to unlock a passenger door manually and climb in to my car. i still can not unlock the driver side door regardless of method.

2003 honda accord ex, the radio and the a/c work, but you cannot see anything on the radio display, and the backlight for the a/c panel do not work, with the exception of the individual buttons such as the one for the compressor, that will come on when you push it in. the warranty on the radio display has been extended to 7 years/100k miles on the 2003-2004 accord. this problem is common. my car is 75000 miles, but is over 7 years. if the problem is common honda shoud extentd the warranty time.

Control panel display (audio-hvac display) failure. i have a 2003 honda 4 door (w/o navigation) accord ex. (i am the original owner of the vehicle). this problem, with potential safety implications seems to rise to the level of a defect. as i write, the display is dark and occasionally flickers. there have been previous service bullitens released on this issue and its a know defect; however i did contact honda customer service on december 2011 but, honda and honda dealer's refuses to replace part without paying for it. windshield wiper (linkage arm) failure. on multiple occasions i had mentioned to multiple honda dealer's that windshield wiper are banging when returing to start postion and i was told it was normal and they had checked the wiper motor and it works fine. windshield wiper started banging year after i purchased the veichle in 2003. i was able to fix the issue by replacing windshield wiper linkage arm at my own cost after i found the solution on independent honda forums.

The stereo backlight went out and my car is out of warranty, honda will not provide any assistance with a known issue. obviously it was a known defect which is why they extended the warranty, but it should have been a recall. the lights on the heat/ac/defrost controls are also out which makes it difficult to turn defrosters on at night when i need it to see.

Hi i have honda accord 2003 with only 70000 miles on it. last year i had problem with the screen that display my ac/heater/radio it went off.i cant see anything on that screen, living in chicago and winter is coming, in extremely bad weather iam scared to drive that car and have my kids in it because i cant visualize and control the heat inside the car..driving on the highway with the bad weather that chicago hasm, i wont be able to control the heater to remove the fog from the front window and it will be impossible for me to see while driving.i believe this is %100 safety issue that you should call honda about and have it fixed because alot of americans use this type of car and alot of my friends have the same problem, honda having buisness here making money should make sure that the products that it sells for the americans meet the safety parameters in this great country. we care about our citizens and thats the role of our government and i believe that you should take action regarding this issue against honda. there was a recall about this issue but most of the customers were not ware of this recall, and now even though my car only has 70000miles on it, honda refuse to fix this problem that their car has. as american citizen having trust in you, i believe that you should put honda on the right track because people safety is an important issue in the united states for sure. please look at this issue and dont put your people down. thank you for all the great work that you guys been doing. god bless you

Audio-hvac display module is dim or dark: the audio display and controls (knobs, buttons, bars) of the audio-hvac display module are dim or are dark. there is a known problem with the honda accords 2003-2007 where one of the components of the printed circuit board ( pcb) which controls the center audio console fails and then the whole audio console goes dark. so when you are driving the car, you cannot see any button or knob on the center console. it's almost impossible to change the heat / cool , the fan speed or any function that is controlled by the conter console. honda initially sent out a technical service bulletin and they extended the warranty on the audio console to 7 years /100, 000 miles. but the problem still exists in a large number of cars. this is not like a transmission or a brake issue which can wear down over a number of years. this is a problem with the electronics on the car and should be escalated to a recall. this is a very dangerous problem as the console lighting does completely dark and the driver cannot see or locate any controls within the car. this can cause serious problem when driving and should be addressed immedietely. honda has issues a technical service buletin number 04-027. this bulletin in the proof that honda knows about the problem. the extended warranty that honda has offered is of no use because a lot of people who have this problem are out of the warranty terms ( 7 years // 100,000 miles) this should be a recall item and the national highway safety institute should force honda to repair this component in the car irrespective of the miles or the number of years. the fact of the matter is that this is a manufacturing defect and is not related to break down of a components because of miles or years. there is no wear and tear involved with printed circuit boards. ( pcb)

My 2003 honda accord ex display light for the audio/hvac went out. this is a real problem because it is difficult to select the defrost/air conditioner/radio settings that you need, and can cause a real safety hazard while driving down the road. honda realizes that this is a common problem with their printed circuit board as they have extended the warranty on this part to 7 yrs/100,000 miles. however, it is obviously still a problem after 100,000 miles as mine has recently went out. they refuse to pick up any of the bill for their faulty electrical equipment because my car is over the arbitrary 100,000 miles which they chose, even though they admit there is a problem with the part. i feel that this is unfair and that they should show some responsibilty and stand behind their product.

Coming back from the airport, going home on belt parkway, the transmission stopped functioning properly out of a sudden, without giving any hints before, totally unexpected. it didn't go to the 2nd gear, stuck in 30mph. after anxiously drove back home trembling, found the reverse did not work either. the vehicle had to be turned off and restarted again to gain back the function of reverse. after research the on the web, and read through so many comments of honda accord 2003 owner, this seems very much related to the honda accord recall incident in 2004. it is believed honda didn't fix the problem permanently back in 2004. it was a temporary fix trick, and right now many of the honda accord 2003 owners are suffering from honda's failure to fix its defective product.

2003 honda accord radio backlight defective...they extended the warrenty fix until 7 years or 105k miles. unfortunatley my died at to day and i have 110k and the car is 7.7 years old. my biggest concern is you cannot tell if the defrost if on or not...time, heat and a/c, defrost, fan etc are all displayed through the radio unit. i called 1-800-999-1009 and they said too bad you are out ot the warrenty limits. i maintain my car meticulously but the dealer qouted me $800 to fix the problem. too much for me. honda id wronng this is a safety issue...cannot tune to emergency broadcast or use defrost.

Control panel display (audio-hvac display) failure. i have a 2003 honda 4 door (w/o navigation)accord ex. about 2-3 months ago while driving the display panel for the vehicle operating systems-radio, heat/ac, time blacked out. at-near the time of this occurence i was on the new york state thruway. a flashing (emergency) sign -flashing 'emergency' 'check radio channel 530 or 1610 for details'- notifying an emergency. as i was driving and could not see the radio display. it was dark. i was unable to access the emergency notice. my vehicle was taken to honda and was told this repair was a defect. this repair was part of a campaign to fix this display, per honda service bulletin 04-027 but the program for my vehicle had expired. they mentioned the campaign was part of a campaign not a recall, even though they acknowledge safety was one of the issues in the program. i live in an area where the raods are equipped with emergency messsage sigage' are frequent and commonplace. not having the ability to access these messages due to a campaign program where no notice was recieved by me (i am the original owner of the vehicle). this problem, with potential safety implications seems to rise to the level of a defect. as i write, the display is dark and has not even flickered since the initial occurence.

I first noticed issues with my auto tranny in my accord ex v6 at around 50k miles. they had just installed some jet for the recall for hard shifting for this car. at about 80k i noticed it getting worse, so i told my mechanic and he changed the tranny oil for me. it seemed to shift a little better and this was only from 2-3 gear that it would rev up to about 5k and then jerk the car to get into 3rd. it's very embarrassing and i'm afraid it's going to lock up on me on the freeway. i saw that california filed a suit against honda and honda settled. every state should be filing a suit - i'd be first in line! i too talked to honda and the hq for honda, but since mine has so many miles on it (all freeway), they are blaming that, even tho i have maintenance records showing it's been a problem. they don't want to step up to the plate. i hope some lawyer gets a hold of these complaints and sues them like california did. this is my 2nd honda and i swore by it, but i'll never buy another honda after this. even from day one i've asked honda about the dimming of the headlights when the car shifts and they said it was normal cuz they car needed all the power to do the shifting, so they wouldn't do anything about it. i've owned several other cars and this was never an issue. i don't know if it's the year of this accord or that it's a v6, but it's very frustrating and honda should be ashamed! if complaints keep happening, you'd think they would fix the issues or investigate it a little harder since they already did one recall on them. i have told all my friends not to buy honda and told them why. let's spread the word and maybe when their sales go down, they might wonder why and do something about it. i'm now faced with a $4k to rebuild my tranny. sickens me, especially when the car is only worth $7k cuz i have 140k miles on it now. email me if you can help sue them...blueeyes97305@yahoo.com.

Bought this car used (with over 140,000 miles) for my teenage son. when he turned the headlights on - all the interior display lights for radio, heating and air conditioning and defrosters went dark. we called honda of america and they denied any knowledge of history of this recurring problem. they even went so far to say that because the honda was manufactured in mexico that no warranties applied. the car had a 6 cd player when we bought it honda said the entire radio system could only be replaced by a single disc player. it cost $1000 to have the problem fixed. i own 3 hondas, have owned hondas for decades and will look to american made cars for all my future purchases. *tr

2003 honda accord ex. all the lcd lights on the center dash console went out, which includes all the radio indicators and all the temperature control indicators. this in my opinion is a hazard because you have to keep pushing buttons trying to find the temperature control that you want. after doing some research on the internet this seems to be a common occurrence. *tr

The wiring harness on my honda accord recently had various places where rodent(s) have chewed on it that resulted in engine problems. the same thing happened two times in 2007 on a chrysler pacifica. in researching online, it appears that this is a much larger problem than i would have thought, with hundreds if not thousands of incidents, primarily on newer vehicles. some of the posts have indicated that several manufacturers are using a soy based wiring harness material covering the actual wires. this seems to be attracting all sorts of rodents including mice, rats, squirrels, and even rabbits. if this problem is as big as it appears, this well may be costing consumers millions of dollars per year! *tr

Took my car in for a regular oil change. hours later i received a phone call from the service advisor asking me, if i had time so he could talk to me regarding my car. i said, yes and the service advisor from honda dealership went on to tell me that i needed my transmission fluid changed, brake fluid changed, and my engine coolant changed. the total amount of cost came to $500.29 which i thought i was being ripped off. the honda service advisor also went on to tell me that i need to have my front struts replaced because they are bad. i noticed when i would make a right hand turn i would hear a squeaky noise. he confirmed that it was my front struts. i ask the service advisor how long does it normally take for struts to wear out he told me around 80,000-100,000 miles well my 2003 honda accord ex only have 48,000 miles on it. i'm assuming that i probably started off with bad struts in the beginning since i had my honda accord ex, i have had nothing but problems. now, that my car is out of warranty i'm hit with a huge fee to get struts replaced on a car which i think was bad in the first place. my honda accord ex was originally purchased by me in december of 2002. i have been the only driver of the car. at this time i would never purchase another honda accord. i used to have an 2000 honda accord ex never had a problem. since i have had this car there have been recalls on my car. i have had problems with the door latches, inside panel on passenger side coming off. sunroof rubber coming unglued. i had to have the windshield replaced bad wipers which scratched the windshield up. new radio system. trouble with the lights for the heated seats, dash board lights went out. radio lights went out. i was sold a complete lemon. i believe honda should look into my maintenance record and see all the problems i have had with this car and really consider replacing the struts for me. i do not have an extended warranty it's going to cost me $700. *jb

This is a redo with corrections of #10079025 the following is what happened to my daughter:while traveling in rush hour(5-10mph) traffic on i80 in new jersey on her first day to a new job,her radio died.she then realized that there was white smoke coming from under hood.other motorists noticing this beckoned her to move out of the lane & onto the shoulder.as she was doing this, she realized that she had no brakes.when she got to the shoulder she applied the emergency brake & turned off the ignition.while calling her boyfriend for help she heard people yelling at her to get out of the car. not understanding why, she was scared, got out & saw sparks coming from the front & bottom of the car. she then heard someone yell to get away from the car. as she took a few steps away a loud explosion was heard.her brand new car had 15ft flames shooting out of it.she was devestated. first impressions were that this is electrical related.after 3 weeks of calling honda, naturally they disagree.they said the probable cause was a non-honda oil filter. at this site alone i found several heat related complaints about dashboard issues.my daughter mentioned to honda city in levittown,ny about her check engine light staying on, she was toldit's nothing. please contact us at: lemonhonda2003@aol.com with any electrical related issues.signed a mom. *ak

Only three days after having purchased a new 2003 accord, i noticed that the console was overheating. when i put my fingers under the console, it was so hot that it could blister skin. there was also a horrible intermittent burning smell. after the car makes this terrible burning smell, i get a headache. this burning smell is an indication of an extremely dangerous problem, that could cause the vehicle to catch on fire. upon my second visit, the dealership acknowledged the problem and replaced the console. on the way home, the new console overheated again. also, the horrible intermittent burning smell is still present. honda america has refused to replace my vehicle or give me a refund. the sales manager at the dealership, hendrick's honda cars of hickory, has given me misinformation about my state's lemon law by telling me they are entitled to 10 repair attempts when the nc lemon law says they are only entitled to 4. the dealership now says that they are trying to reduplicate the problem. further, even though three people at the dealership, including a mechanic, have witnessed the overheating and burning smell, the master mechanic has told me that if something was burning or overheating that i would have equipment failure. this is not true and any good mechanic should know this. it appears to me that they are trying to deny that the problem still exists. the company claims that no one else has reported this problem.

This problem has been occurring intermittently for 2.5 years, has never manifested itself while at the dealer. it all started with the yellow traction control triangle lighting up, right after we bought the car. no symptoms, just solid non-blinking light on dash. dealer had no solution. the problem got worse when my wife noticed that the car's transmission seemed to bog down. i never experienced it, just my wife. dealer said this was just the traction control kicking in, no solution. last july, 4 hours from home, the car suddenly bogged down on me, i immediately looked down at the dash... the car was traveling 70 mph, the speedometer was dead, the engine was dead, i happened to be at an exit ramp, so i coasted off the interstate to a stop. i called the dealer in the nearest city, and they said to restart the car, i did, and it ran. i took the car to auto zone where they said the code was speed control sensor/short. dealer checked it, and said there was no problem with sensor. they blamed it on having too much transmission fluid in the transmission. a few times since july, the car has mysteriously gone dead in traffic, notably while in the turn lane. 2 weeks ago, the red brake light started coming on. an isolated and separate issue i think. last week, i drove 1 hour to the airport. the traction control and check engine light came on, and every time i used the turn indicator, the car died. it restarted itself as soon as the turn indicator was released if moving fast on road. while looping around the airport terminal, it stalled several times as i tested to see if the turn signal still killed it, having to shift to neutral and restart, as the car was idling when it stalled this time. i turned the car off to load bags, and when i turned it back on, no symptoms, and it has not done it since last week. the dealer could not reproduce the problem, again no solution. *jb

I purchased a 2003 honda accord in november 2002. in april 2003, as i reported to my insurance company on the day of the accident, i was not in my car when the accident occurred. i was in the grocery store. a page came over the loudspeaker stating that the owner of a gray honda parked in the side parking lot should come to the manager?s office. as i was parked on the side, i spoke to the manager. the manager and i walked out of the store together and i saw that my 2003 honda accord was at rest in the side of another car. the door was locked, the car in reverse and the emergency brake on. i had the keys with me in the grocery store. not knowing how this could have happened, i filed a police report on the theory someone may have tried to steal the car and also took it to the honda dealer to see if it was a mechanical problem. the dealer could not replicate the problem and at no point acknowledged that this was happening in 1999 - 2002 honda vehicles. the accident caused more than $3,000 in property damage, cost me my deductible, and initiated a raise in my insurance rates of 32% (which after much time, inconvenience, and $27.00, i appealed and won). since the accident, the same problem has happened two more times. i have the keys in my hand and the car is not in park. i do not have the paper work with the eact date of the accident so i am entering the 5th to allow me to file the complaint. *ak

The following is what happened to my daughter: while traveling in rush hour(5-10mph) traffic on i80 in new jeresy on her first day to a new job, her radio stopped playing. while pressing buttons to try to find another station, she realized that there was white smoke coming from under the hood. other motorists noticing this beckoned her to move out of the lane that she was in to go to the shoulder. as she was doing this, she realized that she had no brakes. she proceeded to drive to the shoulder & then had to apply the emergency brake to stop the car, then turned off the ignition. while sitting in the car calling her boyfriend for help, she was hearing yelling from the other motorists to get out of the car. not understanding what was going on, she opened her door to the screams of people telling her that her car was shooting sparks from the front & below. at that moment she started to get scared & got out. she saw the sparks & took a step back & heard a yell from someone to get away from the car. she started to walk away when a loud explosion was heard. her brand new car had 15 ft. flames coming from under the hood. needless to say , she was devistated. everyone at the scene, state police, mechanic, & fire dept. concluded that this was electrical related.after 3 weeks of constantly calling honda, waiting for an answer, naturally honda disagrees. they said that the probable cause....was due to a non- honda oil filter. at this site alone i found numerous complaints regarding heat related issues with the dashboard,etc.. my daughter had mentioned to honda city in levittown,ny that the check engine light wouldn't go off. she was told it's nothing . please contact us at: lemonhonda@aol.com for all electrically related issues signed, a mom. *ak

The fire wall or insulation under the hood the cowl wall caught on fire and they have no answer as to why. we have had two accords at the dealership i work for in the last 6 months. the ironic part is this is my personal car an 2003 with 25000 miles on it. and we had a 2004 v6 that honda bought back from our dealership because we did not want to have to disclose to a customer which by law we would have to do. any time there is a fire i would think it would cause a recall of some kind. they feel that the car did not play a role in the fire but they are unable to tell me what caused it in the first place. my concern is you never know when this is going to occur like i said my car was already a year old and then we had an 04 with very few miles. i am getting a run around from the very company that i have worked for the last 8.5 years. and am not sure what to do. now they want me to include my insurance company which is ridiculous because this is a honda issue. i have not heard anything that would satisfy anyone. would you feel comfortable putting your family in my car? my understanding is that they wont recall or campaign until they have enough cases and they are saying that there are only 10 or 20 cases in the us. i don't care i am one of those cases and i want satisfaction. thanks for your time. *jb

Recently the back light on the radio/hvac/clock panel went out. after checking all fuses it was determined not to be a blown fuse. service advisor/mechanic informed me that it would cost between $200-$400 to fix and that the radio unit needed to be replaced. this led me to conduct my own research and was surprised and disappointed to find that this has been and continues to be a common problem on newer models of honda accords ('03 and newer). i also learned from numerous other owners that they'd received the runaround from the car dealership service departments. however, several indicated that after making numerous calls to honda of america the company agreed to pay for the repair. it appears to be a wiring problem, which could, in my opinion, lead to more serious problems. as a single parent i purchased the honda for my daughter, who attends college some 700 miles away from home and requires a safe and reliable vehicle. since honda of america is aware of the problem they really should issue a recall to owners. *jb

The lights on the stereo and the center of the dashboard went out and would not come back on. unable to see the control switches for the ac/heater which was dangerous during night driving. the stereo worked - but it is completely dark - no lights. i called honda on 2 occasions about it ( case# : n032006-03-08-00025) and explained the situation to them and even reported that there was a service bulletin for a known problem with the 2003 honda accords ( bulletin : 04-027 ). however, the honda representatives were not particularly helpful and would not acknowledge the validity of the service bulletin. also, they did not want to admit that there is a known problem with the 2003 accords and back lights on the dashboard. i took the car to a honda dealership in woodstock and they eventually replaced the complete stereo with a re-furbished one which solved the problem (at no charge) - initially the dealership did not want to acknowledge that there was a known problem which caused the back lights on the dashboard to go out. luckily, the car was still under warranty, i found many similar complaints on the internet where it ended up costing the owners between $400 - $800. *jb
