Defect SummaryHonda is recalling 351,000 my 2003 accord vehicles. if water enters the windshield wiper motor breather port, which is designed to allow the motor to vent warm air during normal operation, it can result in corrosion inside the motor housing. this can cause a failure of the electrical circuit breaker inside the motor housing.
Consequence SummaryIf the circuit breaker fails, it will cause the windshield wiper motor to become inoperative, which can increase the likelihood of a crash in certain conditions.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the windshield wiper motor for signs of corrosion. if no signs of corrosion are present, a cover will be installed over the wiper motor to prevent water from entering the wiper motor housing. if signs of corrosion damage are observed on the wiper motor, the motor will be replaced. the recall began on july 17, 2008. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

Control panel display (audio-hvac display) failure. i have a 2003 honda 4 door (w/o navigation) accord ex. (i am the original owner of the vehicle). this problem, with potential safety implications seems to rise to the level of a defect. as i write, the display is dark and occasionally flickers. there have been previous service bullitens released on this issue and its a know defect; however i did contact honda customer service on december 2011 but, honda and honda dealer's refuses to replace part without paying for it. windshield wiper (linkage arm) failure. on multiple occasions i had mentioned to multiple honda dealer's that windshield wiper are banging when returing to start postion and i was told it was normal and they had checked the wiper motor and it works fine. windshield wiper started banging year after i purchased the veichle in 2003. i was able to fix the issue by replacing windshield wiper linkage arm at my own cost after i found the solution on independent honda forums.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) auto began having recall related symptoms during the second half of jan. (jan. 17th - jan 31st). my wife actuated the windshield wipers in ?mist mode? and they operated very slowly and at times pausing through the cycle of ?mist mode? operation. i took the automobile to an authorized honda of serramonte, colma, ca on the morning of feb 6th 2010. vehicle was then driven in dry conditions, later that day with the honda recall (no. q78), (1.d. #29313) (nhtsa campaign id #: 08v169000, nhtsa action #: pe07060) already performed and on the following four days (feb 7th- feb.10th). we were out of the country; therefore vehicle was not driven from feb 11th - feb. 17th. wife did not use the vehicle for the following four days (feb. 18th - feb. 21st). she started using it on mon. feb. 22nd (no rain). on tue. feb. 23rd (rainy day) she used the windshield wipers in ?mist mode? 2 to 3 times while on the freeway, towards the coast (half moon bay, ca). i had applied rain-x to front and back windshields sometime in the first week of february. later this day, she headed back to her office (in burlingame, ca). it was then, that it began to rain hard and tried to operate the windshield wipers in regular mode at which time they failed to operate at all! tried to operate in ?mist mode?, but that did not work either! i confirmed the operational failure when she arrived home that evening. the following day in the morning i actuated ?mist mode?, and they exhibited the same symptoms they had back on january and in feb. 23rd. i contacted honda of america on 24/feb/2010 @ approximately 08:31 a.m., pst (their case # [xxx] ). the cover installment is not a remedy to what could be internal corrosion in the wiper motor/circuit breaker unit. this is a very dangerous condition that could lead to a fatal crash! my wife made it back home safe even though the likelihood of a crash in the conditions she drove were very high (rain-x certainly worked!). *tr

I was driving my 2003 honda accord coupe on july 31st when it started to rain. as i was returning home, it started to rain harder. during this time, my wipers stopped for as long as a minute and then would start again, only to pause again. i tried setting the wipers to high and found that i had no high. fortunately, i was able to make it home without incident. i then researched the issue on this site and found that there was a recall for this problem (campaign id: 08v169000, nhtsa action number: pe07060), however honda only applied it to the 4 dr models. as i was traveling last week, my wife called honda and confirmed this fact. today, i took the car in to my dealership so that they can take a look. the problem was confirmed to be the same as the issue that has already been logged. *tr

My 2003 honda accord experienced a sudden windshield wiper motor failure during a recent severe rainstorm and it suddenly stopped working. accordingly,i was unable to use the car during rainy weather. i had learned about the nhtsa recall for the same circumstances and so i delivered the car to pasadena honda for repair. pasadena honda service department acknowledged the recall, advised that according to my vin the recall was not applicable to the motor failure on my particular vehicle and made the replacement and charged me for parts and labor. i have the invoice and the old motor which shows signs of corrosion. i have researched the parts listings and i note that all 2003 honda accords regardless of model use the same wiper motor. accordingly, i am not clear as to why my vehicle's wiper motor is not included in the recall. *tr

Took my car in for a regular oil change. hours later i received a phone call from the service advisor asking me, if i had time so he could talk to me regarding my car. i said, yes and the service advisor from honda dealership went on to tell me that i needed my transmission fluid changed, brake fluid changed, and my engine coolant changed. the total amount of cost came to $500.29 which i thought i was being ripped off. the honda service advisor also went on to tell me that i need to have my front struts replaced because they are bad. i noticed when i would make a right hand turn i would hear a squeaky noise. he confirmed that it was my front struts. i ask the service advisor how long does it normally take for struts to wear out he told me around 80,000-100,000 miles well my 2003 honda accord ex only have 48,000 miles on it. i'm assuming that i probably started off with bad struts in the beginning since i had my honda accord ex, i have had nothing but problems. now, that my car is out of warranty i'm hit with a huge fee to get struts replaced on a car which i think was bad in the first place. my honda accord ex was originally purchased by me in december of 2002. i have been the only driver of the car. at this time i would never purchase another honda accord. i used to have an 2000 honda accord ex never had a problem. since i have had this car there have been recalls on my car. i have had problems with the door latches, inside panel on passenger side coming off. sunroof rubber coming unglued. i had to have the windshield replaced bad wipers which scratched the windshield up. new radio system. trouble with the lights for the heated seats, dash board lights went out. radio lights went out. i was sold a complete lemon. i believe honda should look into my maintenance record and see all the problems i have had with this car and really consider replacing the struts for me. i do not have an extended warranty it's going to cost me $700. *jb

The vehicle (vin:1hgcm82663a029794) was purchased on 5/30/03. unfortunately we did not notice the very significant design defect until after we had purchased the car. the design defect is that this particular vehicle has very restricted visibility, particularly noted while driving. it's as if you're looking out through slots. after my wife had a small accident in the vehicle, at least partially due to restricted visibility, we sold the vehicle, fearing worse accidents in the future. correspondence with american honda motor company has not been answered. *la

I purchased my $34,000 2003 accord on may 13, 2003 from route 23 honda in pomton plains, nj. after purchasing it, i noticed that the plastic/glass moldings around the doors were were very deformed. three moldings have been fixed after 2 times being in for service, and one has yet to be fixed(waiting for part). the radio was making a squeaking noise and deformed looking, and they replaced the entire unit. on the right front tire well, there was a molding that was never screwed in properly, and began to hang down, which was replaced. the shifter has a loose stitch on it, which is becoming very sharp and can possibly cut someone. the part was put on order 3 months ago, but i was never notified of it's arrival. the driver side windshield wiper nozzle sprays directly into the wiper arm. this was brought in for service 4 times, and finally another dealership(sussex honda) ordered a new nozzle which will hopefully work. the car has a slight burning smell when i park the car after driving. i brought this to honda's attention, but of course they didn't find anything wrong with it. the car also has a slight grinding feeling that can mostly be felt between 1500 and 2500 rpms. i brought this into service 4 times and they couldn't find anything wrong(again). along with that, when i put the car in drive, after about 20 feet it makes a horrible grinding noise and feeling in the gears. the car also seems to lack the power that it should have. i know this because i had a 2003 accord lx v6 coupe, and then traded it in for a 2003 accord ex v6 coupe. the lx had a lot more power than the ex. also the lx had no wiper problems, grinding problems, or other problems that i have with the ex. overall i have found 10 defects with my car within the first month of having it. after all of these problems, and having the dealership and the honda service center hotline treat me as if i was making up these problems and that it was my fault for having these problems i will never buy another honda again! *la

Honda 2003 accord is equipped with a design defect of costly and potentially harmful, from a safety standpoint, defect. the lower grill on the front bumper is designed in such a way that any road debris smaller than a 16 x 8 concrete block can enter and damage a fully-exposed and unprotected air conditioning (ac) condenser. it is clearly unprotected from the harsh outside elements. the ac is an integral part of the safety of this automobile in that to clear the windshield from any moisture on the inner surface, the ac must be acting in proper fashion. if a car's inside glasses fog-up with moisture, the only solution is to turn on the moisture wringing ac unit, regardless of the temp of the air, the dehumidifier effect of the ac conditioned air is an absolute necessity. the current design of the grill/condenser leaves it vulnerable to be easily damaged by a bit of gravel as small as a bb pellet. there is not any screen or deflector in place forward of the condenser to prohibit any errant road missiles from damaging the condenser thereby creating the safety hazard of a fogged windshield and more. a simple screen or deflector could and should be installed to protect the safety of this car. *la

I have a 2003 honda accord 4 dr ex purchased in january of this year. i have a constant problem with the front seat driver and passenger windows rattling or ticking. i have taken the car in twice and have scheduled it for a third time next week. the dealership does not seem to be able to fix the problem. they have admitted that other cars on their lot have this problem including one driven by a sales mgr. they have also called honda america but have received little if any guidance on how to fix the problem. i will commend the dealership for their efforts to fix the car but i will pursue the lemmon law if this is not fixed.

2003 honda accord. consumer writes to report a potential fire hazard with power windows *tgw the consumer stated the front drivers window regulator motor assembly was replaced, because it was slow to open and then became stuck in the down position. four months later, the front passenger window would not open when the consumer tried pressing the switch from both the master control panel and the passenger arm rest. in addition, none of the windows opened from the outside of the vehicle when she pressed the unlock button on the remote transmitter and held the button down. the doors unlocked, but the windows did not go down. the front passenger regulator motor failed and in addition to a fuse blowing, the wiring in the passenger door panel burned and the vehicle's fuse box assembly was damaged. when the consumer picked the vehicle up, she was told the problem may have originated with a crack in the master control switch on the driver's panel. two days later, after the repairs were made, when the consumer tried pressing the switch to close the window, the window rose less than an inch and immediately went down again. also, when she wanted to open the window fully, she had to hold the control switch in the down position longer than normally required to automate the action. the consumer returned to the dealer and they replaced the run channels on both windows. *jb

There is a constant rattle on the sunroof of my vehicle when it is closed. i took it to the dealer, and they said they would have to remove the entire sunroof just to check it. i have been hesitant to take it in due to the possibility of more damage. the dealer is downey honda (downey, california). *ak

A small stone hit my windshield today and seemed to cause more damage than it should have. i've been driving for many years and have had many rocks hit the windshield. since owning my new car, this is the second time a small stone has hit my window (different place), and the first one also seemed to cause more damage then it should have. the first time, i didn't have to replace the windshield, but i will have to this time. it just seems very unusual to me with my experience as a driver. the car is rather new, and i'm two for two with stones causing damage, where as with my previous cars, most times no damage happened under similar circumstances.

In august 2005 and on september 19, 2005, i experienced the same problem. on my 2003 honda accord, the windshield wipers stopped working while in use and during rain storms. on the first occasion, i barely avoided a serious car accident. the wipers stop on the glass, completely. my mother was in the vehicle with me the first occasion and can serve as a witness.*jb

At first none of the windows rolled down. currently, the door locks froze, and consumer was unable to access the vehicle that had a keyless entry system. consumer had one lock on the door that the key went into and that lock also froze. at this time, the consumer had to leave the doors unlocked in order to gain access.*ak this presented a safety hazard due to necessity of accessing auto after work in a dark parking structure at a city hospital. the dealership blew dry the inside door, but with michigan winters , consumer foresee a high probability of recurrence. the right side windshield wiper insert started falling out and scratched the windshield. reinstalled wiper insert. *bf *nm

*la

*tr
