AIR BAGS - FRONTAL
04V551000HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)from 05/14/2003 to 08/30/2004V (Vehicle)25761611/30/2004ODIHONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)11/18/200411/19/2004
Defect SummaryOn certain sedans, a tear in the fabric of the driver's front air bag occurred after apparent contact with the inside surface of the air bag cover during deployment.
Consequence SummaryA torn air bag may not offer the same level of protection, in the event of a crash, thereby increasing the risk of injury to the driver.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a protective fabric flap between the air bag module cover and the inner module. the recall began on november 30, 2004. owners should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.
NotesHonda recall no. p54. customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration
AIR BAGS - FRONTAL - SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE
07V001000HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)from 08/07/2003 to 08/16/2004V (Vehicle)8100002/08/2007MFRHONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)01/03/200701/04/2007
Defect SummaryOn certain vehicles, the seat position sensor (sps) detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly. the wiring harness for the sps was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location and may have been over tightened. the sensor wire may break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated, and the sps to fail.
Consequence SummaryA failure of the sps causes the air bag system to default to full inflation pressure, regardless of the seat position. full deployment of the driver's air bag can increase the risk of injury for smaller drivers in a frontal crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the seat position sensor wiring subharness. the recall will begin on or about february 8, 2007. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

AIR BAGS - FRONTAL

During two of 13 nhtsa research & development compatibility crash tests, the driver-side frontal airbag failed to properly deploy due to a large tear in the airbag fabric.both r&d test vehicles that contained a failed air bag were 4-door, 4-cylinder (l4) vehicles.subsequent static and dynamic tests conducted by honda revealed that during severe crash conditions, the airbag fabric can snag the inside surface of the airbag module cover at the emblem attachment points.honda reports that the air bag module and cover design are unique to the 4-door, 4-cylinder subject vehicles.on november 17, 2004, honda notified the agency that it would recall 228,932 model year (my) 2004 and 28,428 early-my 2005 accord l4 sedans (up through early-october, 2004).as part of the recall remedy, honda will install an additional piece of protective fabric/flap between the airbag and the inside airbag module cover.see nhtsa recall 04v551 for details.in addition, there are approximately 250 exported accord vehicles included in this recall. the v-6 models and the 2-door, 4-cylinder models are not included based on different air bag and air bag module cover designs.this investigation is closed.

My 2004 honda accord exl generated a seat position sensor srs code at 85,000 miles. srs light was continuously on. i found the nhtsa campaign # 07v001000 recall for the exact same issue on the 2004 accords, but my vin was not included. the honda dealer would not cover the cost of the repair as a result, but was fully aware of this common issue. they indicated i should not have the issue again once fixed. i also contacted honda and notified them of the extreme safety-related issue, but they refused to cover the cost of the repair. now 4 years later at 155,000 miles, the srs light is once again on and the code indicates the same seat position sensor issue. i contacted honda once again and raised the issue. i unfortunately received no compensation or understanding for the repair. i stressed the fact that this is a critical safety-related problem and honda should take the matter more seriously.

There are plenty of online posts regarding the srs light intermittently coming on in honda vehicles. dealership stated that problem was due to a faulty sensor inside the seat belt buckle. considering the magnitude of reports, there should've been a recalled issued. although the new car warranty booklet clearly states on page 31 that there is lifetime coverage of any seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use, honda has refused to honor it per conversation w/[xxx] @ 800-999-1009 on 1/23/13 @ approximately 9:05am et. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

To whom it may concern: there is a huge safety problem with the passenger air bag sensor in my car. the passenger seat airbag indicator lights comes on intermittently when no items are in the seat, and occasionally comes when items are in the seat. the seat definitely has a short in it and i am concerned about it not working properly if i am involved in an accident. ## vin passed ##

Major electrical problems began about 2 years ago. radio display won't light, but radio/cd still plays; air conditioner cools intermittently, though compressor is working and freon is adequate; tail lights sometimes work, sometimes don't; ignition switch makes a noise as though the engine was already started when i turned the key, even though it wasn't - eventually the ignition switch had to be replaced (problem still occurs from time to time); brake callipers have always pulsed no matter how slow i come to a stop; and airbag light comes on for no apparent reason as there is not hinderance to the sensor switch mechanism below the seats.

My 2004 honda accord had been left parked overnight on our driveway. at about 10:30 in the morning the next day,12/18/11, i got into the car, and with my door still wide open and the car in park, i turned on the ignition and started the motor for a 2 or 3 minute warm-up. i was on the driver seat and my wife on the passenger seat with her door also wide open. i was talking to my wife with my face turned towards her while the car warmed up. after about two minutes, i turned off the motor and pulled out the key from the ignition switch to hand it to my wife still facing her with my left side towards the steering wheel. our house key and the car key were on the same key chain and i was handing it to my wife to lock the front door of the house. right at that moment, the driver side airbag violently exploded with full force and with a very loud bang whipping my face and my left ear. whatever i had in my hands (my wallet, a cd and the car keys) were all blown away and landed outside the car and i was completely deafened and disoriented by the blow and the loud explosion. for the next two hours or so, i was hurting in my left ear and was unable to hear anything with that ear. its been more than 24 hours since that incident and my ear though not hurting as much, still has some ringing. i reported the incident to the american honda motor company but am very disappointed with their handling of this situation. they want me to have the car towed to a dealership and have it checked all at my expense. they refuse to pay for any expenses whatsoever that i may incur with regards to this incident including medical check-up. and to make matters worse, they claim that the car is out of warranty and as such they are not obligated to pay for any repairs. this is not a warranty issue, it is a serious safety matter, they cannot absolve of their responsibility. i feel totally helpless!!

2004 honda accord has an intermittent problem with the drivers seat belt. a contact in the seat belt latch is causing the air bag system to malfunction. my local honda dealership stated that the air bag will not function with this problem. an internet search shows many honda?s with the same problem. this problem in the seat belt disables the air bag and also disables the seat belt warning light which warns the driver if the seat belt is not latched. the honda warranty states that ??any honda seat belt component that fails to function properly during normal use? is covered by a lifetime warranty. however, honda is refusing to replace the seat belt latch under warranty. *tr

I was driving to work on 9/21/2010. traffic was coming to a stop and i began to apply my brake. upon applying brake my vehicle accelerrated causing me to rear end another vehicle. my air bags did not deploy and i'm not sure what my rate of speed was because i was trying to stop when the car accelerrated. my front end is damaged to the tune of $4,886.08. after my accident i was confused about how it happened. i knew i had was paying attention on just didn't ram into another car. i was on a street was several school bus stops and they where making their rounds. so speeding is not an option. i was talking with my fiance and he stated that this has happened to him once while driving my car. he did not have an accident, and also thought it may or may not have been operator error it kinda shocked and confused him as well. i'm going to have my vehicle checked while being repaired. i just want this looked into this was really scary and could have ended up much worse.

Summary: on certain vehicles, the seat position sensor (sps) detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly. the wiring harness for the sps was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location and may have been over tightened. the sensor wire may break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated, and the sps to fail.

2004 honda accord ex 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, original owner. had honda handle the recall fix on driver front airbag when that recall was issued years ago. everything ok per honda and the dashboard indicators. within the last 2 years the dashboard light for driver's front airbag will intermittently come on, stay on for entire trips. haven't been able to connect its activation to any specific occurance or regular pattern. ask my independent mechanic about it and he referrred me to the dealer. haven't made an appointment. any news from other owners?

Over the past 10 months, starting approximately august 2009, the air light in my 2004 honda accord exl would intermittently come on then go back off. more recently, it comes on on a daily basis. when i buckle my seatbelt and start the car it may appear and stay on the entire time while driving. then when i stop and turn off the car then turn it back on, the light may or may not show up again. i found that there was a nhtsa campaign number: 07v001000 for 2004 honda accord. component: air bags:frontal:sensor/control module summary: on certain vehicles, the seat position sensor (sps) detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly. the wiring harness for the sps was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location and may have been over tightened. the sensor wire may break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated, and the sps to fail. consequence: a failure of the sps causes the air bag system to default to full inflation pressure, regardless of the seat position. full deployment of the driver's air bag can increase the risk of injury for smaller drivers in a frontal crash. remedy: dealers will replace the seat position sensor wiring subharness. the recall will begin on or about february 8, 2007. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009. i contacted america honda motor and they said that this recall was on the 2004 accord lx and ex but not my exl model or my vin number. i feel that my car is exhibiting the same issues and should have been included in the recall.

Air bags: frontal:sensor/control module indicator light came on suddenly on july 22, 2008. subsequent examination by honda dealer service department revealed that the wiring harness for the sps which was attached to the seat frame was broken. dealer denied any responsibility, as had honda america, despite the fact that a recall announcement for this very problem was issued 1/2/2007 (nhtsa campaign number: 07v001000). they claim that my car's vin # was not part of the recall which makes me responsible for fixing the problem. *tr

On may 14, 2008, i brought my 2004 honda accord ex to my local honda dealer because the srs (airbag) indicator came on and remained on during operation. the dealer charged me $263 for replacing the wiring harness under the driver's seat. i believe that the repair should have been completed at no charge because there is an outstanding nhtsa recall (07v001000) that specifically refers to the srs indicator and problems with the wiring harness for 2004 honda accord models. my service rep at the dealership said that the vin on my car did not fall in the vin range for the recall, but the documentation for nhtsa recall 07v001000 does not specify a range of vins for 2004 models, only for 2005 models. i am asking that the nhtsa clarify and/or expand the vin range for 2004 honda accords to include my vehicle and that the dealer reimburse me for the charges i have already paid. *tr

There is a recall on my 2004 honda accord drivers side air bag. in february i contacted honda in torrance california according to instructions explaining my situation. i am teaching overseas in a dod school and needed to get a european honda dealer to fix the car. they said just contact the european dealer. i did and after 3 months said they did not have the proper bag. they would have to order it from the usa. i have not heard back from them after two inquiries. again i called torrance california(american honda headquarters. this time july 2006, the girl said, oh yes you did call in february. can i speak to a supervisor. no. she would send it to a case manager. about one week later a manager calls my wife at work and tells her they only have brown and grey air bags no black ones in the entire usa. and they do not know when they will get them in if at all. she said our car's entire interior is black we need to have black to maintain the quality in case we have to sell the car. no way is this possible. you can have the grey or take a chance on the one you have being defective. this is absurd. how can i get them to send me the airbag and i can walk it to the dealer so i can get this fixed since they are unable to and do not care whether it gets done or if there is any danger involved. it was purchased at southeastern honda in florida. 2004 honda accord lx silver with totally black interior. trying to argue with this guy is difficult from germany. is there anyway you can rectify this. *jb

AIR BAGS - FRONTAL - SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact noticed that the air bag warning light would sporadically illuminate on the instrument panel, which indicated that the frontal air bags were inoperative. in the event of a crash, the air bags may not deploy. the manufacturer stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 07v001000 (air bags:frontal:sensor/control module); therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repairs. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 39,000 and current mileage was 41,000. 8/7/09 *cn updated 08/11/09.*jb

*tr

I need some help with a recall problem, i own a 2004 honda accord, and the airbag light came on about a month ago, there was a recalled from honda for this problem, but when i took it to the dealership, and i was told that this vehicle was not on the recall. they were refusing to fix it, they wanted me to pay for the sensor. although it was the same sensor that was recalled by honda, i didn't understand why this vehicle being the same model and same year was not on the recall. *ak

Vehicle air bag sensors are failing. my 2004 honda accord v-6 has had the air bag sensor fail twice within the first 36,000 miles. i'm told by honda this is a common problem. when i asked if the air bag system would still work i was told no and that i should drive carefully and avoid accidents. *nm

AIR BAGS - SIDE/WINDOW
11/17/2010100000
While driving at night on the freeway at 65 mph, the passenger side curtain airbags deployed without explanation (both the bag that deploys through the ceiling liner and the bag that deploys through the side of the front passenger seat). due to the violence and confusion of the deployment explosion, i first thought that the right side of my vehicle must have been crushed in a collision with an unseen semi-trailer truck. ears ringing from the concussion, i initially fought to control the vehicle, but soon realized that the tires were still intact. as the smoke cleared, i saw that the nearest vehicles were 100+ yards ahead or behind my vehicle. at the next exit, i inspected the vehicle under a street light. there was no apparent damage to the exterior. during later inspections by an insurance adjustor and the honda dealership, no cause for deployment was found. there was no damage to the undercarriage and hence no evidence that an object hit the undercarriage to trigger the deployment. the only external damage was a small golf-ball sized dent in the roof over the right center pillar. the dent was apparently caused by the strong torque that the deploying side-curtain airbag applied to the welded roof mount to which the air bag package bolts. hence, all interior and exterior damage to the vehicle (>$3000 usd) was caused by the false air bag deployment itself. the insurance company concluded there was no evidence of a collision and refused to cover the damages. the honda dealership similarly refused to cover the damage since the vehicle was out of warranty. the dealership further claimed that the air bag controllers do not save the state of the sensors when a deployment is triggered, and hence it is not possible to diagnose failures. i find it disturbing that so-called

I have complained to honda about my transmission slipping, almost stalling out and then taking a huge jerk...it normally happens when letting up off my gas...this has been ongoing for almost 2 years; last night i had the ride of my life in only a matter of seconds! i was stopping by the bank to get cash from the atm; as i let up off my gas, the car did a hard jerk and jumped the sidewalk hitting the corner of the bank. i'm so glad no one was using the atm at this time. my airbag never deployed and my seat belt released for me to get out but now it is jammed and will not pull out enough for me to wear it! with all the complaints i've found that are very similar to mine going back as early as 2003, i really feel that honda should take these complaints more serious and that they should be held responsible for repairing the issue and any damages incurred due to the issue. i am a nervous wreck and i hope no one will experience what i just went through. there should be a thorough investigation requiring honda to fix this problem. *tr

Driving down road @ 40 mph, in a 2004 honda accord lx, the passenger seat side air bag deployed for no apparent reason, injuring the passenger. at this point, nothing has been done to repair the damages by honda of america or state farm insurance company due to it's rare circumstances. honda technicians and their district manager said they found no good reason for deployment. they tested the airbag parts after the deployment, and they are currently still functioning properly. theorizing, they commented that a bolt may have smacked up under the car and hit a sensor, creating a frequency mimicking the sound of an impact. according to the honda technicians, these side air bags are activated/actuated on frequency so the second they hear a crunch or glass break, they shoot out. he said that if something created a sound similar to that of an accident or vehicle impact, that they could go off. so, car still is not repaired, and has been checked by honda and state farm adjustors. neither has found any amount of damage to suggest anything out of the ordinary was hit on the roadway, just a small scratch on the bottom of the car, which may or may not have been the culprit. *nm

Dt: 2004 honda accord. the contact stated while driving 65 mph, the driver's side air bag deployed. there had been no accidents prior to this. the contact stated there was a noise coming from under gas pedals since purchased the vehicle. she took the vehicle to the dealership three times, and they stated they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. the contact was able to get to the break down lane. she then had the vehicle towed to the dealership, who stated there were scrapings under the vehicle and a bolt was missing. according to the dealership, she ran over something to cause this. it occurred on october 6, 2005. *ak updated 12/19/05. 8jb

Car type: 2004 honda accord ex, while driving down the freeway, side impact, airbags (on passenger side) fired with no provocation. luckily, there were no cars near me. i was obviously startled by the airbags firing, and briefly hit the brakes as a knee-jerk reaction. had there been other cars near me, there is little doubt i would have caused an accident. car is now being serviced at a honda dealership. they intend to replace the airbags, roof liner, srs unit(?), and possibly the passenger side seat belt buckle.*ak
