My 2004 honda accord had an engine fire caused by a defective high pressure power steering hose. the hose sprung a leak, spraying power steering fluid onto the engine, which caught fire. this defect is already the subject of nhtsa recall 12v-222, but inactivity and foot-dragging on honda's part has caused this otherwise avoidable safety incident. *tr

Light display went out that controls radio and hvac components 2 years ago. dark at night when driving and when the windows get fogged up you can not see the switch to turn on defrost because the printed circuit board has stopped working, so it requires you to turn on interior light to find the defrost button, this is very dangerous while driving at night. after researching last night i found honda extended the warranty on this until 2011 or 100,000. so i called honda and i was told i'm past the warranty it's whichever comes first (i never received a letter from honda or it would have went in to get fixed) this in my opinion should be covered by the dealer as it could cause a fatality with someone fumbling with the interior lights just to get the defrost buttons on. *tr

The passenger window began rolling up and staying up all on its own, at anytime it wanted. it would return to normal working order after i restarted the car. then one day- it rolled down, and would not work again. i found out i could override with the keys to roll up. but id have to window lock to stay. then one day we smell burning- we traced it to the door- and the override no longer works. now the driver window is beginning to do the same behavior. so far i've replaced driver switch= 325.00 --quote for motor= 400.00--i know it will need the switch too... that is over 1000.00 just to get the window up??? that is absurd! *tr

I had been driving 10 min. (70mph) on the interstate when i went to pass another motorist as soon as i turned on my blinker the car started to shutdown. after several minutes i discovered that when i applied the brakes the car would also make an sudden jerk and begin to shutdown. the car would drive completely normal as long as you did not activate either the blinkers or the brakes. i tried several other electrical accessories and none of them seemed to effect the car. after driving for several hours we exited the interstate and put the car in neutral after engaging the brake for several seconds the car died . when i took my foot off the brake it immediately restarted and the problem stopped. *tr

Major electrical problems began about 2 years ago. radio display won't light, but radio/cd still plays; air conditioner cools intermittently, though compressor is working and freon is adequate; tail lights sometimes work, sometimes don't; ignition switch makes a noise as though the engine was already started when i turned the key, even though it wasn't - eventually the ignition switch had to be replaced (problem still occurs from time to time); brake callipers have always pulsed no matter how slow i come to a stop; and airbag light comes on for no apparent reason as there is not hinderance to the sensor switch mechanism below the seats.

The display for the radio/ac is very dim. the radio still works but you can't see the display. this is a known problem for this type of vehicle. honda needs to have a recall and fix this on all accords.

While at a stop light, my car just shut off for no apparent reason. prior to that i would have glitches (on/off) while listening to the radio but this happened while i was driving. i didn't notice the problem before but it just kept shutting off even though the gas tank was full and the battery in it is new. i took it into a mechanic for a diagnostic but nothing came up in their sensor. the mechanic looked at all of the connections and couldn't sense that there was an issue. i know that i didn't buy a new car but it had a full inspection. i'm worried that although it passed it's safety inspection if it is truly safe to drive since it keeps shutting off while driving and especially coming to stops.

My wife had parked in a parking space with a very slight downward slope. there was another space ahead of her. she had been driving in a heavy rain. the car was operating normally. when she returned about 15 minutes later, the brake pedal felt hard. she started the engine and shifted into reverse. the car started coasting forward. the brakes remained hard and didn't stop the car. she stopped it by shifting to park, then turned off the engine. she repeated the attempt to back out of the space - same result. no error messages appeared. she called, and i drove to the scene. the rain had stopped. i felt the hardness of the brake pedal, although it felt more like a stiff spring than a non-power brake pedal to me. i pumped the springy pedal a few times; it didn't change. i started the engine, keeping my foot lightly on the brake. when the engine started, the stiffness immediately disappeared, the pedal felt normal, the transmission worked, and the car drove normally. i didn't get to experience the transmission problem. later, i could find no problem with the brakes. the linkage has only a very slight amount of play, as it should. i depleted the vacuum supply by pumping the brakes with the engine off. the pedal felt very hard, unlike the springy feel in the parking lot. i have a phd in electrical engineering and a lot of car repair experience. this background leads me to conclude that it is extremely unlikely for the unrelated braking and transmission systems to fail simultaneously, and then recover simultaneously. there has to be another common cause, which leads me to suspect the computer system or possibly a sensor, particularly because this happened after driving in a heavy rain. the postulated failure mode is a compromised computer system that could partially activate the abs system and also fail to operate the reverse solenoid valve in the transmission.

The front instrument panel (the panel that contains the buttons to turn on/off the defrost, heater, air conditioner, radio) failed to illuminate in april of 2009. after getting in my car, putting my key in the ignition, and turning the headlights on i noticed that the panel did not illuminate. typically, the panel illuminates after turning on the headlights. this day, after turning on the headlights the panel did not illuminate and has never there after illuminated since that date. at first i thought it to be an issue with a fuse (since it is an electical issue) so i sought the owners manual to see which fuse controlled the panel. after having difficulty understanding the fuse layout i searched online for help and that is when i discovered that many other honda owners have had this problem and that it in fact is not a problem caused by a simple fuse. this is a significant safety issue at night due to the fact that it is very difficult to find the defrost button on the panel when it is not illuminated and on rainy nights or other nights when the defrost is needed be very obstructive to the clear visibility of the driver of they can not access the defrost when needed. because of this safety issue it is highly recommended that a recall is activated to replace and fix the electrical malfunctions of the panel that i have detailed.

I own a 2004 honda accord ex. the climate control, cd, radio, defroster, etc are displayed on an back-lit led display console. over a year ago the backlight went out, rendering the display useless. reading various car blogs, this has been a systemic problem with the accords. so much so that honda has recalled some vin numbers (but not mine) in the daylight hours, this is a mere inconvenience, at night it has presented several dangerous situations while driving in trying blindly to adjust climate settings -especially the defroster. i reported this to honda, but they said that my vin number did not qualify. the dealer said that they will replace this light for $645. please consider investigating. *tr

2004 honda accord, 2 door, 6 sp manual transmission. while driving, occasionally when turning on turn signal, turning on the high beams or touching the brakes causes an interuption to the electrical system of the car and it just shuts off. if moving with the clutch out, the car starts back up and continues. this happens at least once every time i drive somewhere and gets more frequent the longer you drive--like on a long trip. is exciting when putting turn signal on while passing while at speed on the highway.

2004 honda exl v-6; headlights dim as a result of the eld issue which is honda is fully aware of. the car works fine in every other aspect. honda's explanation that this is normal and acceptable does not do anything to ease my concerns as the headlights flicker during nighttime driving. i am very disappointed that honda is not taking the necessary steps to resolve this issue, as it is a very noticeable issue. given the number of online postings and complaints filed directly to honda over this issue, the nhtsa needs to apply some pressure to honda to get them to resolve this dangerous situation on their accord models. *tr

Noticed upon starting car: lights on my dashboard have darkened completely (and permanently, not intermittently). this includes the defroster indicator, dashboard buttons, climate control, radio, and clock. this is a very common problem for 03-07 accords, hundreds of users have complained about it for years. see the following thread: http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/advice/t-8584.html please submit this to honda for recall action. *tr

The headlights on my 2004 honda accord go dimmer and brighter about every minute while driving or parked. this headlight problem only occurs when the a/c or defrost is on. i believe the extra load on the electrical system with these components turned on is causing the headlights to dim about every 60 seconds. it could be related to a fan or other engine component turning on and off, not sure. the dealer replaced my battery and checked the alternator but the problem still occurs. the dealer says it is normal for honda accords to do this, but i think there should be a recall. this is very distracting to myself and the drivers in front of me. it looks like i am flashing my lights. *tr

 (1) enough accumulated driving hours will cause the failure, per honda service bulletin 04-027, and online information: the resistor in the audio unit over time will be heated up and fail due to a design defect, resistor too close to the a heat sink. 2) cd/ac/fan unit display went dark. consequently, the defroster cannot be reliably set, causing a driving hazard, especially in the wet pacific nw and at night. this is a safety issue, not just the cd display. (3) no one will contact dealership. this is a complaint against the vehicle, not to the dealership.*ak

This is the third time this has happened. while driving my 2004 honda accord ex the light denoting the driving gear has come on. the 1st time it happened i took it to crown honda dealership. they said the computer didn't record the act and couldn't find the problem. today on the way to the crown dealership the same thing happened twice. both times i stopped the car and restarted the car. on the second restart the light disappeared and drove fine. hopefully this isn't automatic transmission going bad. *jb

As i was pulling out of my parking spot at the local kmart, in my 2004 honda accord ex, i noticed another car backing out also. i applied my brake and put my car from reverse into drive to pull a little ways back into my parking space so i would not get into an accident, when suddenly and without warning (the blink of an eye) my car crashed into another vehicle. in shock, i pressed harder on the brake, but my car continued to accelerate and i could not stop it. i hit two other parked cars before the brakes finally stopped the car. thank god it stopped as my car was heading toward the kmart store. one 85-year old lady was injured while in her car. the other two cars were empty. a lot of damage to 3 vehicles plus almost $7,000 damage to my accord. after my car was repaired, i asked the honda dealership to look at my car and they could find nothing wrong. i asked to have the cruise control disconnected as i have read that may be what causes sudden acceleration accidents and honda refused saying if something went wrong they would be liable. this is a nightmare, just horrible, as i am being forced to drive my car and i am frightened another incident will occur. something needs to be done! *jb

I had purchased my 2004 honda accord ex on 7-16-04 with 145 miles on it. two days later i was attempting to accelerate and the car went dead, no power, steering or brakes. i hit the guard rail with my new car. it has about 202 miles on it. so far the dealer said this is the first time this has ever happened from other articles posted here, i see its not. also on other sites, the end result is always honda finds no problem. i am afraid to drive a car with 202 miles on it. if they choose to repair it. i hope not... *jb

Purchased car with 10 miles on it. failed to start upon leaving dealership. apparently loose wire. salesman wiggled with cable and car started. every day since the purchase of car, i would have a false start requiring a second or even third try to start the car. 25 days later, 1200 miles later, the car died and was towed to the nearest honda dealer. apparently, the battery was not installed properly and all cables surrounding the battery was loose and the headlamp cover was loose also. there is clunk noise when you initially put the car in drive and was told by the dealer that this is normal noise. there is a metallic rub when depressing on the brake and there is loud brake noise also. dealer said this was normal also, but i'm not so sure of this. *la

I leased a 2004 honda accord ex v6 in may of 2004, from rick case in miramar fl. on august 31, 2005, i had to have my o ring discharge line replaced, due to leaking power steering fluid and noise. then, on april 3, 2006 i had to have my entire radio/cd player changed out due to led not working and both back window motors replaced due to loud noise and rolling down slowly. in july 2006, i relocated to atlanta, ga and purchased this vehicle via retail (transferred the title) in august 2007. then, november 9, 2007, i had to have the power steering pump replaced due to leaking fluids and a loud noise. today is august 6, 2009 and i am again having the same power steering issues!! other problems that i am currently having with my car: had to get my battery changed august 9, 2007; window motor problems with both my front seat windows; internal lights not working on transmission gear-shift, over-head light. i am so unhappy with this honda purchase as i thought that they were known for their longevity, especially since i have been the only owner and got the car brand new. the main thing is i need answers or directions as to what my next step. please advise, thank you. i am still making payments on this car!! updated 08/07/09.*jb

I got out the driveway and made a right turn. the ignition key jump out of the ignition key hole and broke the key handle ( plastic with remote doors/trunk opening. the car stalled and stop. i put the key ( the metal part) in but the engine did not start. i tried super glue the metal and plastic back together and turn the ignition key. the engine was on normal. i took the key out, and tried to turn it with the metal part again. the car did not start. i did not realize the serious of the problem until i read the worcester telegram gazette ( saturday 8/13/05) and found the honda acura rsx has the same problem to other and it locked him three times. i may get kill if the key jump out of the ignition and stall on the highway. please alert honda about these problems: could be bad ignition lock, shift interlock mechanism, or steering column or the anti-theft. please help and investigate this serious safety device. *jb

I have a 2004 ex v-6 accord coupe. i have had the vehicle in the shop numerous times. i had the car for 1 week it had 175 miles on it and the check engine light came on. all six pistons were misfiring. i have had the car in 3 times now for excessive noise on the drivers side window. the dealership fixed it once and told me that some noise is normal.. (my 76 honda civic doesn't even make as much noise as this car does) the check engine light comes on and blinks and goes off has done this numerous times. dealership resets it and says that it is ok. i have also had the car in 2 times because it won't start. dealership says to turn key to first click to let the fuel injection lines fill with fuel. it doesn't work. i am taking it back to the dealership once again tomorrow because the trunk doesn't latch correctly.. what a dissappointment this car has been and its not even a year old.. i will never buy another honda again. the quality has gone severely down hill.*ak

2004 honda accord lx 4 cyl. automatic 4 door 4533 miles ey will not come out of the iginition. this has happened four times. each time i called the dealership to inform them of this event. i was told to bring it in, but they need to see the key not come out of the car to diagnose the problem. if it came out then bring it in the next time you have the problem. each time i was successful with key removal after about 20 minutes of play. i would be able to turn the car off and on. i would drive around, come back park, play with key, giggle key up and down, side to side, and still not be able to get my key out. i made sure that i was in park, back up go forward, and park, pull up e-brake. i risked my car being stolen because i couldn't get the key out at 11:30pm on 12/5/2004. i put my jacket over my wheel to cover it up and locked the car with my spare key. i took it into the dealership, and after 24 hours of being stuck- it came out in the service drive. honda has had 12 complaints up to date. no recall has been formatted, nor has there been a successful solution to fix this problem.*ak

I was driving on 1995 expressway at 65 mph, when the car completely died, i managed to coast it into a breakdown lane. i called the police thinking i had a computer chip problem that happened to a previous honda. finally noticed that the radio was working and there had been a key symbol on the dashboard before it went out. i was able to start the car up and then realized that the ignition key had slipped forward into the off position while i was driving. i had not touched it, nothing jarred it and i cannot repeat it by hitting or leaning on the other items on the key chain. i noticed that the key has a lot of room to jiggle in the igniition switch. checked your nhtsa to see similar problems with honda. very concerned. honda will not see the car until next week, they claimed of hearing about it in older cars but not newer. *ak
