Defect SummaryOn some mini vans, sport utility and passenger vehicles, certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or gear breakage.
Consequence SummaryGear failure could result in transmission lockup, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryOn vehicles with 15,000 miles or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to the second gear. on vehicles with more than 15,000 miles, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. if discoloration exists, the transmission will be replaced if discoloration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line. the recall began on april 21, 2004, for pilot, odyssey, and mdx owners. owners of the accord vehicles will start receiving letters on june 28, 2004, and on june 29, 2004, for owners of the tl and cl vehicles. owners should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009 or acura at 1-800-382-2238.

Was driving on a highway at approximately 60mph when the vehicle would not accelerate but the rpm's would increase when the gas pedal was pressed. appearing almost as if the vehicle was in neutral. i checked the shifter to make sure i was still in drive which it was. tried to shift the gear to d3 and d2 however there was no change. while this was happening the speed of the vehicle was reduced to about 30 - 35mph when i was almost rear ended as it was during rush hour traffic. i was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road, where a state trooper stopped to see if everything was ok. i placed the vehicle in park while speaking with the trooper. i attempted to place the vehicle in drive to try and get back onto the road however the vehicle did not engage and would not move forward. i placed the vehicle in reverse and it jerked backwards. i turned the vehicle off and immediately restarted it. i was able to place it in drive and get back on the highway until i reached 60mph and the problem started again. i again pulled over, turned off the vehicle, restarted it and would continue for a few miles until the vehicle acted up again. i had to repeat this process about 4 times until i got to the dealership where the vehicle now sits. it appeared that this wasn't a problem while i stayed under 60mph as when i hit local roads and the speed limit was 30mph the car did not act up.

I had a sudden fallen transmission problem while i was driving the car started jerking and loose speed due to the transmission not putting in the gears it got over heated fast and i was in traffic and had a stranger help me push it to the side and aaa towed it to my home then the next morning towed it to the dealer and the dealer said i need a new transmission after reading comments on motor trend.com honda failed to send me a recall notice about my transmission. the 2004 accordv6 obviously have transmission defects and i want my transmission paid for from honda im really upset and honda corp. needs to pay for this. *tr

I was driving on the interstate when all of a sudden i was no longer able to accelerate. the car jerked when i tried to accelerate or brake. i was able to steer it off onto the side of the road. after taking it in to get it looked at, i was told it is the transmission. according to several articles online and mechanic at the shop i took it too, 2004 honda accords are known for having weak transmissions. it was so unexpected and i take car of my car. i felt completely unsafe trying to get it off the interstate going 20 miles an hour as it jerked along and apparently people already know about this issue?? i have just had the car for a year now and bought it from a honda dealership. not a word was said to me about the issues with these models or safety recalls for several honda models made in 2004 - but apparently not mine.

As i was driving the transmission (automatic, v6 accord) kept slipping so although i was applying the gas the car was slowing down and not moving. so i had to turn the car off and then back on and it would move again for a little but and then the transmission would slip again and i would have to pull over and turn the car off and back on. i then had to have the car towed to a transmission shop for repairs. the transmission show replaced the transmission, so parts and labor came out to $1750.00. *tr

As i am driving my vehicle gets stuck at 20 mph and the rpms go high (above 3,000-4,000). then the rpms eventually go back down and the vehicle speeds up. i have 2 boys, a 2 year old and a 5 year old along with my wife. i am fearful for their safety. i researched that there was a recall in regards to the transmission over heating at 2nd gear from lack of lubrication but i never received a recall, or at least my dealership did not receive a recall notice. i am not in the best financial situation to have a transmission serviced, but i have kept up with all of the vehicle maintenance including the timing belt, water pump seals belts etc which were replaced not too long ago. i was hoping that the nhtsa could assist me with this urgent matter. *tr

On december 10th, 2012, transmission failed completely while commuting to work on mn 95. barely avoided collision reaching safe shoulder area (winter conditions). injured back pushing vehicle out of way of oncoming traffic. transmission began whining upon cold start and slow in shifting at approximately 125,000. attempted diagnosis at honda dealership - failing transmission. was told to contact honda america regarding 2004 recall and 2006 settlement. no response to request for assistance from honda america. local transmission repair shop diagnosed slight slipping in 3rd and 4th gears, even when warmed up. looked up technical service bulletins regarding 2004 recall repairs utilizing jet pack to increase transmission fluid flow (and pressure?). called honda america and was told vin indicated the problem had already been addressed during vehicle manufacture (2nd half of 2004) and recall for jet pack was not needed. vehicle had to be towed and remanufactured transmission installed. cost - $4,000 plus lost work. despite 2004 recall, 2006 settlement and extended warranty (7yr/100k), honda america refuses to assist. have owned 6 hondas since 2000 (1998 accord, 2000 civic, 2001 accord, 2003 odyssey, 2004 accord and this 2004 accord). will now sell my repaired 2004 accord and my 2003 odyssey fast before its transmission fails and will have to seek another company that actually stands behind its products. *tr

The car initially would stick with a brief pause when shifted from reverse to forward. several days later while driving on the freeway the car suddenly began to slow between 30-40 miles an hour. in order to get home we had to turn off the car and then restart and coast. in an effort to transport to our mechanic the car would not go in reverse and would not go into drive so we had to tow it in neutral to the shop. the mechanic was able to verify how the transmission fluid was black and smelled burnt. his prognosis was that i will need a new transmission. within the past couple of months i had the car in the shop because of engine noise. it was thought to be the transmission and further diagnostics revealed the idler tensioner pulleys had to be replaced. at the time computer diagnostics revealed no problems with the transmission and the fluid was fine as well.

I have a 2004 honda accord v6 and while merging into traffic on my way to work, the automatic transmission failed. i was nearly rear-ended, but was able to get the car off to the side of the road safely. had this happened on a highway i could have been rear-ended by an 18 wheeler. with a v6, i expect to be able to pull out into traffic and come up to speed quickly and safely. that was not the case on the 29th of november and i was nearly rear-ended by a minivan due to the transmission failing completely. i am told that the transmission oil pump failed, and that lead to the transmission failure. i am now trying to trade in this vehicle for a toyota instead. i no longer feel safe driving any honda vehicles. in my experience, hondas nonchalant way of dealing with this issue is extremely disturbing, and makes me feel that honda does not care about me as a customer. sad, if this is the new honda, i will be sure to inform everyone i talk to about the decline in honda quality and customer service that i experienced. *tr

At 57 to 60 mph, when accelerating the whole car shudders. was told the front axles needed to be replaced. i did some research and found this is a very common problem with honda accord from 1997 to 2005. one piece of anecdotal evidence from a honda repair technician was that he saw this problem at least once a day. this has to be a produce defect for this to happen so frequently. i am not sure of the ramifications of this problem on vehicle safety if left unrepaired but i have to imagine any problem with an axle could be potentially serious and/or life threatening. *tr

My car started bucking about two weeks after i had it inspected in july. also the drive light was blinking and the check maintenance light came on. at one point i was alone and far from home and the car would not go into reverse. i contacted a mechanic i know well who told me there was a safety issue and that i should try to drive the car to the transmission place he recommended. for several miles the car bucked and i wasn't sure whether i would get there or not, but i did. very scary. not sure this sure happen with a car that only has 76,500 miles on it and i am the only owner. *tr

I was traveling on the interstate and was gradually having problems with my accord v6 engine shifting into third gear. rpms would go up, but no additional power. finally transmission totally failed. honda reported to me that the error code indicated an internal transmission failure and i needed a new transmission. they only gave me $1300 towards the $4400 cost of the transmission. they had no response to my comment that i noted other failures of the transmission posted in this database and elsewhere on the web. *tr

The vehicle stopped dead for me on a road. fortunately i was not on a highway (i was on a 30-mile/hour road) because i probably would have been rear-ended and i would have been dead or ,worse, caused someone else to be injured. i called the towing service and they said it was the transmission. the car at present is worthless. i never received a recall notice form honda. i can only guess that i had moved from the date of purchase. however, my local honda dealership in syracuse,ny never (over 8 years of service at the same dealership) notified me of a potential issue or recall on this transmission. this is a serious problem since the car just stalled on the road and died. very disappointed with honda and their lack of notifying owners of the potential serious problem. *tr

I did the routine maintenance on my honda accord. i have followed all of the specifications regarding oil changes, maintenance on the transmission, timing belt replacement, etc. unfortunately, even with the routine maintenance performed on this car, my transmission failed on a road trip on july 7, 2012. i was driving on the interstate going 75 miles per hour when my honda accord would not accelerate anymore. thankfully, i was able to safely pull across three lanes of traffic in order to get to the shoulder. unfortunately, that is when i discovered that my transmission failed and i had to take it to the nearest garage. *tr

Feb. 2007, approximately 60,000 miles on the vehicle, while driving on freeway middle lane, engine started racing, lost acceleration. was fortunate to get to the shoulder without causing an accident. through an extended warranty which i paid for, got a new transmission installed by honda. since i had not used the warranty before, the premium on the warranty would have been reimbursed to me had the transmission not had to be replaced. after 70,000 miles on the second transmission, the same exact incident occurred again on july 6th 2012. i contacted honda and was told that there has not been a high amount of complaints with 2004 accord transmissions. honda also claims that there have not been any recalls or extended factory warranties. i have documentation that both transmissions have been maintained to honda specifications. vehicle is currently having a third transmission installed. *tr

On june 9, 2012 my nightmare returned and again it was my transmission. i was driving on a major intersection in queens, ny when i felt a change in the speed of the car and the loss of power (car not moving). by the grace of god i was able to put the car in reverse to navigate it closer to a safer spot. i later had my car towed to a mechanic to diagnosis the problem and was informed that it was the transmission. again, this was an unexpected expense that should not have been.

Started with high pitch whine, then it took a few seconds to go into gear, then sputtering and ultimately it would stop accelerating while i was driving.

While driving on the highway our honda accord automatic transmission lost power and acted like it went into neutral. luckily we were able to limp to the garage as it was an intermittent problem. my concern is that this could have caused an accident if this had happened on a busy highway or we were in a position which you could not pull over to a safe location. complete loss of power due to a defect in the trans is a problem i have never experienced and feel the transmission should not fail in this way. i believe it is a design flaw. i hope no one is injured with these failing transmission as this is a common problem for this model if you do an internet search.

Transmission slippage and failure. similar to what i have since read online about other honda transmission problems and recalls. honda quoted me $4,100 to replace transmission, less a discount of 20% or net of $3,280. i have impeccable service records and local dealership (where i bought car from) agreed that i could not have done any better with maintenance--all of which was performed at the local dealership. no previous problems and transmission slippage and failure was sudden (couple of days). most recent transmission flush was at the honda suggested mileage.

Transmission failed. one day it is working fine the next day per the honda dealer the transmission is unrepairable and needs to be replaced. the cost to me was quoted at $4100.00. i purchased the vehicle new, there was a recall on the transmission, i wonder when honda is going to notify me of the recall?

Transmission with only 116k miles failed while driving approximately 50 mph. car violently downshifted, which forced me to drive it to the side of the road. vehicle has been meticulously maintained. i am original owner and was never notified of the recall tsb on the transmission, even though i never moved from my address which i purchased the car new from showcase honda in phoenix, arizona in july of 2004. i only discovered that there was a tsb recall on 2004 honda accord ex v6 transmissions after i researched info of the transmission failure. these transmissions, although 8 years old now are still on the road and may cause fatal accidents. luckily for me, no cars were immediately behind me and i was able to safely steer my car off the road.

Driving on the highway, the automatic transmission in the v6 model (85000 miles) seemed to slip into neutral, and any application of gas red-lined the engine. had to dodge through highway traffic slowing down to 25 mph before the gears would engage. after exiting the highway, the same problem persisted at lower speeds; complete gear slipping. the problem persisted in d or d3. after letting the car sit turned off for a few minutes, it seems to now be functioning properly, but there is no telling when it could happen again. this is a safety issue to due sudden failure of a critical system. had i been less fortunate on the highway, i could have been involved in a serious accident. also, if this happened while turning through or crossing a busy intersection, i would have been broadsided. http://www.carcomplaints.com has logged over 100 of the same complaints in cars that have never been recalled, it's only a matter of time before someone gets killed. this car should have been recalled with the other 2004 accord v6 models.

My wife had parked in a parking space with a very slight downward slope. there was another space ahead of her. she had been driving in a heavy rain. the car was operating normally. when she returned about 15 minutes later, the brake pedal felt hard. she started the engine and shifted into reverse. the car started coasting forward. the brakes remained hard and didn't stop the car. she stopped it by shifting to park, then turned off the engine. she repeated the attempt to back out of the space - same result. no error messages appeared. she called, and i drove to the scene. the rain had stopped. i felt the hardness of the brake pedal, although it felt more like a stiff spring than a non-power brake pedal to me. i pumped the springy pedal a few times; it didn't change. i started the engine, keeping my foot lightly on the brake. when the engine started, the stiffness immediately disappeared, the pedal felt normal, the transmission worked, and the car drove normally. i didn't get to experience the transmission problem. later, i could find no problem with the brakes. the linkage has only a very slight amount of play, as it should. i depleted the vacuum supply by pumping the brakes with the engine off. the pedal felt very hard, unlike the springy feel in the parking lot. i have a phd in electrical engineering and a lot of car repair experience. this background leads me to conclude that it is extremely unlikely for the unrelated braking and transmission systems to fail simultaneously, and then recover simultaneously. there has to be another common cause, which leads me to suspect the computer system or possibly a sensor, particularly because this happened after driving in a heavy rain. the postulated failure mode is a compromised computer system that could partially activate the abs system and also fail to operate the reverse solenoid valve in the transmission.

With no other signs or warnings, my transmission stopped working as i was driving down a busy street. the engine revs but the car does not engage. i was able to drift over to the side of the road, where it seemed to stay in first gear. after limping along for a few minutes, all it would do was rev. i coasted to the side of the road again and turned the car off. i started it up after a minute or two of freaking out, and it seemed to work normally again. after about a minute, the same symptoms returned. had it towed to a mechanic and we drained and replaced the transmission fluid, which was dark. this solved the problem for another fifteen minutes, until it failed again. now i am looking at 2-3k repair to have a honda accord that works. according to the internet, this is a common problem with the make and model of my car. a partial recall for 2004 accords with transmission problems does not include my vin#.

My 2004 honda accord v-6 transmission failed at about 100k miles. there was a previous transmission recall but apparently they did not do any repair during the recall because the transmission looked fine! sure enough, it failed after. i had to fix it and then called to request a reimbursement or partial reimbursement from honda. they offered a $50 gift certificate! ps: the response from honda customer service and honda repair shop was that it was normal for a transmission to fail at 100k. so for all of you looking to buy a new car, be aware that it is normal (not) for a honda to fail at 100k miles and as such expect to pay an additional $10-$15k to replace transmission several time over the life of your honda. after more than 3 hondas, my next car will probably be a toyota. signed honda just lost another customer.....

I own a 2004 honda accord ex v6 coupe and the transmission is failing in 2nd gear. i was traveling up a hill and it failed and i was forced to pull over so i would not get rear ended. i have been told i need to replace my transmission, which costs $4,000-$5,000. in a recent january 11, 2011 article published by the ny times by christopher jensen, titled honda transmission problems seem to persist, a recall from 2004 is outlined which involves 2003-2004 honda accord v6 transmissions. the article also states the n.h.t.s.a. web site has some 570 transmission complaints from owners of 2003-4 accords. many refer to problems with second gear. i have contacted honda and have been told there is nothing they can do because my specific car was not part of the recall? i am livid. this is ridiculous. how can they not be held responsible for this?!

I am like other honda owners whos car failed them. my transmission has gone out right after the 100,000 mile mark. honda states there is no known problem with the v6 transmission but i have sites with hundreds of people who explain the same issue i had with my car. now honda states that checked my 2nd gear shift (which is causing stressed to the transmissions and killing them) butback in 2005 but saw no issues, but after i took it to my local honda dealership, they state its bad! honda secretly knows that the transmissions in this car is bad ( the whole line of cars) but refuses to fix the issue knowing it will cost the company 3500-5000 to fix everyone's car. they are risking the safety of their customers to save a buck. websites like : http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/accord/2004/transmission/transmission_is_slipping.shtml and many more found thru google shows hundreds to thousands of customers have been through (or will so go through) the same issue after going over the 100,000 mile mark. honda had a recall and after a civil lawsuit expanded it to 100,000 miles. i almost got hit as my car was driving on the highway at speeds of 60+ then slow down to 5 mph as if my car was in nuteral. the people need your help to warn everyone else of this danger before someone gets hurt or worst! is there a way we can do another civil lawsuit to have the warranty expanded again? thanks and god bless

Transmiswsion failed catastophically without any prior warning. at 45 mph it downshifted into first gear, redlining the engine and locking up the wheels. it did it twice more before i was able to drive the 3 additional miles to my home. i'm fortunate it was at night and there was little traffic. honda has known about this problem since 1999 as covered it up, continuing to manufacture and sell cars without doing anything to correct this fatal flaw.

In january 29, 2010, my wife was driving home with my children when the car suddenly loss power. we had it towed to my mechanic who checked it and told us that it was the transmission. we eventually had it replaced for $2300. i was really surprised that the transmission failed so prematurely but since it had passed its warranty i didn't bother notifiying honda. however, the same thing happened again this november 11, 2011 while my wife was driving my children home. the rebuilt transmission we had put in failed as well after 30,000 miles. luckily, it didn't happened in the freeway. my family could have been killed. now i'm having it replaced with the used one because i don't want to spend another $2300. i thought i was alone on this but i found out that a lot of people are having the same problem. my neighbor has an accord and the same thing happened. i hope something can be done about this before somebody dies.

Driving in traffic on the freeway, the automatic transmission suddenly disengaged and pressing/releasing the throttle caused the engine to rev freely, as if the transmission had been placed into neutral. once the car slowed down (coasted) to about 20 mph, the transmission re-engaged somewhat, and gently depressing the throttle allowed me to slowly accelerate to keep up with traffic (about 40 mph). when the transmission shifted between 2nd and 3rd, it appeared to slip quite a bit--the tachometer ranged between 1900 rpm and 2600 rpm until 3rd gear engaged. the transmission now refuses to go into overdrive (5th gear), and the transmission is continuing to slip, both while shifting gears, as well as when driving at a steady rate. took the vehicle to the local honda dealership, and they quoted $4452.00 to replace the transmission with a honda remanufactured unit. i called honda customer service to see if they could offer any assistance on the repair, and was politely told no due to the age and mileage of the vehicle.

Was driving down the highway about 50mph and all the sudden the engine rpm increased but the car wasn't going any faster, but doing the opposite. i looked in my rear view and came so close to being rear ended, thankfully i pulled over quickly out of traffic. the car would not move, called a wrecker got towed to honda...and guess what ..yep transmission failed, and to make matters worse my vin# was not part of any recall..go figure! i have the 04' accord with the v6..we will see if honda steps up.

I have a 2004 honda accrod ex v6 and the transmission started slipping. i took it to a honda dealer, where they told me i needed a new transmission, which may not be covered by the reacall. driving on interstate and city roads, the car stops. the engine starts, but i am not able to accelerate the car. according to recent diagnosis, which suggests that there was a failure of the automatic transmission. i have been made aware of recent transmission issues with other 2003-2004 honda accord vehicles, which i find unlikely for the honda brand.

Just hit the 100,000 mark on this accord. the transmission is out and will not shift into gear. it just stopped while driving. thank goodness this did not happen on the freeway. hondas are supposed to go forever, but this seems to be a common problem. the recall apparently did not fix the transmission problem. i will not be buying or recommending honda again.

Noticed leak on garage floor, took it into honda dealership, told by technician carrier bearing in transmission is very loose causing leak, likely need transmission replacement, low mileage 70,730. wonder if this should have been considered in recent recall date of 8-4-11 since this car was manufactured in july, 2004.

The vehicle is automatic and takes up to 3-5 seconds before wanting to accelerate once its put into drive and then slight kick once it gets into gear. the vehicle begins to vibrate at the speed of 55 as well. the vehicle kicks also when in drive and it switches gears around 30 mph.
09/13/201165000
My transmission was recalled in 2004 however the fix was to install an oil jet kit and extra lubrication to the gears. the transmission still failed at only 65k miles. honda now refused to pay for the repairs. honda knowingly put my safety and the safety of my two year old daughter at risk by not replacing the transmission. the incident happened while driving my daughter to school and i become stuck going up a hill and started rolling backwards into oncoming traffic.

I have a 2004 v6 accord with 110,000 miles and had a previous throttle position sensor replaced a year ago b/c the tranny did not shift down into lower gear intermittently on highway. now i have the opposite problem, where tranny doesn't shift up into overdrive. so there is another sensor problem. turning off/on the car resets it. but local mechanic said test drive showed jerkiness from 1 to 2nd gear, and i've always noticed/ignored a judder from high gear to low gear, e.g., slowing down at off ramp. and he said the tranny fluid looked burnt. and there is an emissions controller fault and leak too. the recall for 2004 transmissions does not include my vin...and reading the nyt blog from jan 2011, suggests it might not have been a good recall fix anyway. but in my call to dealer service dept and to honda n.america, they came across very defensive people on phone. can't see buying another honda again.

I was driving 70 miles per hour on a busy freeway when the vehicle down shifted abruptly and drastically reduced in speed. it refused to shift into higher gears, randomly spiked in engine rpm, and resulted in a hazard due to quickly-approaching traffic from behind. the vehicle's speed had reduced to nearly 20 miles per hour in busy freeway traffic before i had successfully navigated the vehicle across 3 lanes and onto the shoulder. i turned the engine off and shifted the transmission into park. i turned the engine back on a few minutes later, and was able to get the transmission to shift and drive normally until the end of the off-ramp. upon reaching the off-ramp's stop light, the transmission died again, and refused to accelerate the car. the engine was responding to gas pedal inputs as if it were in neutral, although the transmission was in drive. i waited for several traffic light cycles, unable to move the vehicle and amid impatient drivers' car horns from behind me. thankfully, the car's transmission responded temporarily again, long enough to maneuver the vehicle into a nearby dealerships parking lot. we had to push it the last few feet into the parking spot. here, the transmission had finally failed to the point that i could no longer shift it out of park. i called my insurance company to get a tow truck to tow the vehicle 15 miles back to my local honda dealership. they diagnosed the issue as a transmission failure, which required a new transmission altogether. they were surprised by the relatively low mileage, but said it was a frequent problem likely due to a design flaw in the v6 automatic transmissions on these accords. i was especially disappointed because i had just spent over a thousand dollars in maintenance costs at this same honda dealership a week before, where i have consistently maintained my vehicle.

Transmission downshifted without warning into lowest gear causing the car to jerk and decelerate very rapidly, which resulted in lost control of the vehicle. after coming to a stop transmission would not engage, leaving the car disabled in the middle of the highway.

When parking the car in a parking lot, as i was turning into the parking space the car jumped (went very fast forward and hit the wall in front of me) even though i had my foot on the brakes i felt i had no control of the car and the engine turned off on it's own. i also noticed it jumped gears, it was no longer on d but d3. this incident caused damage to the bumper of the car.*ak

I purchesed a 2004 honda accord in october of 2008, the car was running and fucntioning well until the year 2010 where i started to have problems with the radio not working, the transmission failed and now in 2011 had to replace the sop ecm (per hoda dealer the memory card of the car), i have spent more than $6,000 on this car because i had had so many major a minor problems with it. and even though i have followed the schedule maintainance visits to the dealer this car still reflecting problems. i have gotten eveything fixed till this moment and im afraid the car will still give me problems in the future.

I was trying to merge onto the freeway and was almost rear ended because i could not get the vehicle to go over 30 mph. i was scary to say the least.

Driving on freeway with no warning the car comes to a sudden stop as if the brakes were being slammed on. i own a 2004 honda accord v6 automatic. after this incident the car did not want to drive as if it was in neutral. i was slowly able to get onto shoulder. this caused a huge traffic jam. i was nearly rear ended by full size truck. after i had stopped for approx. ten minutes i was able to drive the car home with no issues. i discovered that honda issued a recall for this same exact problem. i've read many other people have had this same incident happen. one of which involved a chilid getting injured. i brought the vehicle to the captial city honda dealership in olympia, wa. for the recall work to be performed (it had not been done, issued in 2004). the dealership had my vehicle for a full day before i recieved a call saying my vehicle needed an oil kit installed which was part of the recall. the next day i was told the kit was installed and it did not fix the problem. i was also told that during the test drive the transmission locked up on the technician driving it. they then told me that the failure had nothing to do with the second gear which the recall states and that i would be responsible to pay for the repair approx. $4,000. the next day i call back stating that i believe the transmission should be changed under the recall and that they were supposed to inspect the transmission before installing the kit. they then told me they never installed the kit and the failure is not a part of the recall. many other 2004 honda owners have had the same problem. if it's not related to the recall shouldn't there be an investigation into why these transmissions are failing like this now? or are the dealerships not performing the recall inspections correctly? i implore that another recall be opened to inspect these transmissions again and further than just the color of second gear. i don't want another driver injured or killed due to this or a child injured or killed.

There was absolutely no warning that my transmission was going to fail. i was stopped at a red light. when it turned green, i started to go and was entering onto an interstate on ramp. i was in 5pm traffic, which was thick. my car wasn't picking up speed. i looked down and the rmps were high. i let up off the gas. the car started to go, and then jerked like it was stopping. the car behind me almost rear ended me. i was in the interstate on ramp with no where to pull over. i tried to give it gas, and the car would not pick up speed fast enough. i let up off the gas again and it would go and then jerk to almost a stop. it was like someone else had control of the gas pedal and break pedal. it did this five or six times until i could get off the road. i had it taken to the dealership, where i was told the transmission needed to be replaced which would cost $4,000. again, i had no warning this would happen and had no prior problems with the transmission. the fluid had been changed just 3 months before this happened. the car had always been maintained at the dealership. this is a 2004 honda accord ex, 6 cylinder, with 134,000 miles at the time. honda refused to help with any cost. although there was a recall on some 2004 accords, they said my vin number was not one of those. a website shows 78 other people who experienced the exact same thing...with no warning and with mileage between 80,000-140,000. surely, honda is aware of this issue and it was broader than they thought. this is a safety issue. i was almost rear ended!! i plan to bring this to the media's attention.

I was driving our 2004 honda accord ex v6. my wife was in the passenger seat. i entered the freeway accelerating to freeway speeds (60mph) and around 55mph the car's engine revved to 6000rpm. knowing something was wrong i took my foot off the gas. the car began to coast and all of a sudden it caught a lower gear and violently started to engine brake. i almost lost control of the car. i'm certain that if the pavement was wet i would have. i am an experienced driver and was able to keep us on the road. if my wife was driving things might have been different. the car has been well taken care of and has had all of its scheduled maintenance and inspections (with records). the car was taken to repair shop and we were informed the car's transmission is bad. the car has 121,000 miles. there was a recall for transmission issues with this car year model that included cars manufactured to january 8, 2004. our car was manufactured in january 2004 and not included in the recall. we have yet to have the car repaired because of the insanely high repair cost. i have also noticed several internet sites and newspaper articles referring to honda transmission problems. i am thankful that i didn't wreck the car, but now the car is sitting in our driveway not drive-able. obviously, now i wonder if my car should have been included in the recall. i hope someone doesn't have to die before this problem is brought to light and remedied by honda.

Without warning my automatic transmission will slip out of gear. doesn't seem to be related to speed or length of time driven. just random. it could happen 20 times a day or not happen for weeks. i have contacted honda and they said it is not a recall issue, although i have found literally hundreds of the same complaint online. was told that they might be able to offer me some assistance on repair, but not 100% and not a common issue.
04/18/201196817
While accelerating in 2nd gear, the transmission slips causing the engine to rev, but the car remains in a neutral state. feels like the transmission is shifted into neutral while driving and then shifted back into drive. once the transmission catches, the vehicle shifts extremely hard. there is a loud whining noise coming from the front of the car while accelerating, that didn't exist before. after taking the vehicle to the dealer, it was discovered that the transmission is faulty. this vehicle has already had the transmission replaced because of a safety recall which pertains to this exact problem. honda refuses to fix the transmission because they state the transmission has already been replaced.

For 3 days prior, i noticed a second or two lag time between the car going from reverse into drive. i didn't think much of it. then about 10 minutes into driving at about 40 mph the transmission dropped to a lower gear and the car abruptly dropped to about 10 mph. fortunately, there was no one behind me or they would have smashed into my car. i then turned around and went home with hazards blinking. during the entire trip back, the transmission constantly slipped gears at almost every speed.

Honda accord v6 transmission failure after 107,000 miles, where the vehicle would not stay in drive a highway speeds. a complaint was registered with american honda motor corporation, who denied there was a problem. a survey of accord v6 transmission problems indicated over 100 failures here at nhtsa, and thousands of complaints at other forums. this problem appears to be consistent with earlier failures of honda accord transmissions, where they extended the powertrain warrantees to 109k miles for replacement.

Transmission went out on 2004 honda accord wtih only 80k miles. was on busy road and i was lucky that i wasn't hit as i jerked and slowed and sought a way to get to the side of the road. no indication the trans was failing until symptoms began and got worse in a hurry. consequences are towing to shop and expensive repairs which are being made now. honda said i had to bring it in to thier shop and they had to do any repairs. no price or offer of financial help..just a maybe honda would offer a goodwil discount. decided not to try honda as others online told of the exceedingly high charges honda imposes. feel it was a safety risk that should never had happened. honda apparently has a history of transmission failures for several year models. seems they profit from not correcting the problem if they require them to repair and charge more than any private shop.

Vehicle: honda accord v6, 2004 problem: automatic transmission failed while on a busy street and nearly was rear ended and left me stranded on busy road. honda is not admitting any fault at this moment when this model has a recall dated 2004 which i was not made aware of when the vehicle was worked on at their dealership in 2010. this defect is a safety issue because the transmission was dropping out of gear when on an interstate traveling at 70mph.

No indication of automatic transmission issues. automatic transmission failure occurred on interstate at 70 mph, pressed on accelerator pedal and would not accelerate. was on innermost lane, had to cross 3 interstate right lanes during commuting hour with no acceleration (was like driving in neutral). able to get to next exit. was on a downslope so able to coast down. at the base of the hill, stopped. could not drive the vehicle anymore, press the pedal in d and r and would not move called tow truck to tow me to honda dealership 40 miles away considered an automatic transmission failure. this is the first occurance of transmission failure with this vehicle. honda service repair had to replace all automatic transmission parts. as of date, honda corp. will not warranty the parts and labor.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that the transmission was shifting gears while in motion. while driving approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed that the rpm decreased to 20 mph. while stopped at an intersection, she attempted to accelerate forward; however, the vehicle stalled similar to nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000 ( power train:automatic transmission). the dealer informed the contact that her vehicle had not been included in the previous recall. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who drained the transmission fluid and cleaned metal from the plugs; however, the following day, the continued to stall. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 134,257. bw

I was driving my 2004 honda accord ex-v6 on the highway. when i attempted to accelerate by pressing on the gas pedal the car did not go any quicker no matter how hard i pressed. i pressed down hard a few times and then began to move over to the right lanes in case it got worse. the rpm's went a the way to almost the red but the car was not going and was sowing down. then out of the blue it went back to normal. i got off the highway and came to a stop light. when i started to go it started to move, got me in the middle of the intersection, then did it again, raving real loud but not moving. i had cars coming right at me and i thought i was going to die. then, the person i called to help me, showed up right behind me in his truck and pushed me out of the intersection just in time. honda almost got me killed. i had it towed to the dealer because i just had the transmission flushed due to their recomendation. they said the transmission was gone and would need a new one. they said i should call honda care because this has happened a lot lately and their are recalls on this transmission as well. honda told me too bad, we can't help you. i paid $3,800 for a rebuilt transmission that is not the same as the original model and now it gives me all kkinds of problems and i feel very unsafe in this honda. i bought a honda because they are supposed to be safe. it seems honda does not care about the safety of its owners as much as it may seem.

On january 6, 2011 the transmission of my 2004 honda accord v6 (with ~84,695 miles) began slipping. the engine would rev wildly at odd times when i was not accelerating, and would slip into neutral when i was on drive or reverse. after driving a few miles in city traffic these problems would get really bad and finally the car would not move at all, even when the car was on and in drive. after breaking down in the middle of a major artery in washington, dc, and having to be pushed around the corner by two good samaritans, i finally discovered that if i simply turned off the engine and re-started the car, i could drive again, albeit slowly and with these problems persisting. at first my honda dealer misdiagnosed the problem as a battery problem, but finally after three tries they replicated the problem and diagnosed transmission failure. i informed them of the recall on all 2003 accord v6's and select 2004 accord v6s. i was told that my vin was not included in the recall, and that my vehicle did not have that same second gear problem. we complained to american honda and asked them to make this good. after having bought this car precisely because i wanted the most reliable car on the market and because hondas have the reputation for going for 200,000 miles, i was incensed that the transmission died at 85000 miles. american honda agreed to pay just $500 which barely covered the cost of my rental car for the period during which i was without my car. i feel this situation was handled very poorly by honda and that, based on all the consumers who have had similar experiences with their v6 accord transmission, it is clear that the recall was not broad enough in terms of the specific transmission problem it addressed.

On december 28, 2010 i was driving my car through the windy and snowy back roads of the adirondacks when suddenly the car began to slowly decelerate. luckily there was a small shoulder where the snow was plowed off enough for me to pull over and call aaa. i had to wait 35 minutes on the side of this road in the middle of nowhere for my car to be towed. i purchased this car new in 2004 and have been the only driver since. it has been excellently maintained and always brought in for oil changes and checkups. this car, other than what happened on the 28th, is in perfect condition. i had my car towed to the nearest honda dealership in plattsburgh new york. the next day the mechanic called me and said it was an internal failure of the transmission. he gave me three options, none of which are appealing. the first option costs $2,500 for a used transmission, second option costs $3,000 to rebuild the existing transmission and lastly $3,300 for a new transmission. again, no option is appealing. when looking up the types of failures that other honda accords have had, this is right in line with them. it infuriates me to no end that this is not covered by warranty and that it will cost me over $3 thousand to fix this car. prior to this problem, my immediate family has owned 6 hondas, needless to say, we won't be purchasing any more.

I was driving my 2004 honda accord ex v6 on the freeway at 65 mph. all of the sudden the car jerked and felt like it downshifted and the vehilce abrubtly slowed from 65 mph to 30mph in a matter of seconds. luckily there was not a car directly behind me and i was able to pull the car to the side of the road without an accident. if there had been someone directly behind me then there would have been a bad accident. this could have been extremly dangerous to anyone who was on the road with me.

My 2004 accord v6, 117k miles...transmission slipped on thursday of last week for the first time, and by saturday the vehicle was inoperable. car reved with no acceleration while driving in traffic at 50 mph, was on a highway ramp with traffic all around me, very dangerous. it continued to sputter and slip, then would not go into reverse once parked. i just called the dealer and they denied knowledge of any problem with the transmissions on this problem and told me to be careful what you read on the internet. this is my second, but last honda. i bought hondas because of their supposed reliability. this is a dangerous problem and honda should make concessions and own up to the problem. someone will end up dead before this is over if they don't make this public. there is no warning that this problem is coming on. one minute the car is fine, the next you are in a dangerous situation.
10/20/201077000
When starting, my 2004 accord, a green d light came on then the car began to drive very roughly and without power. it was then that i found out about the recall on certain cars of that year, for the same problem, however, my vin number was not included in the recall so the honda dealer said in essence too bad that doesn't effect your car because your vin wasn't included! now i'm going to have to pay to replace a transmission in a car with only 77,000 miles!

I was driving to work on 9/21/2010. traffic was coming to a stop and i began to apply my brake. upon applying brake my vehicle accelerrated causing me to rear end another vehicle. my air bags did not deploy and i'm not sure what my rate of speed was because i was trying to stop when the car accelerrated. my front end is damaged to the tune of $4,886.08. after my accident i was confused about how it happened. i knew i had was paying attention on just didn't ram into another car. i was on a street was several school bus stops and they where making their rounds. so speeding is not an option. i was talking with my fiance and he stated that this has happened to him once while driving my car. he did not have an accident, and also thought it may or may not have been operator error it kinda shocked and confused him as well. i'm going to have my vehicle checked while being repaired. i just want this looked into this was really scary and could have ended up much worse.

Summary: on certain vehicles, the seat position sensor (sps) detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly. the wiring harness for the sps was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location and may have been over tightened. the sensor wire may break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated, and the sps to fail.

09/19/201074000
My 2004 honda accord ex v6 with 74,000 miles had transmission failure on the freeway. i was going 65 mph and without warning the rpm's reved up to 6000, the transmission disengaged, and my car almost stopped. fortunately, it went back into gear and i was able to pull over without any additional problems. i had my car towed to a local transmission repair shop and was told i needed a new transmission. i decided to have them rebuild it with a cost of $3,300 rather than install a brand new one due to the expense. i am so greatful there was no one in back of me on the freeway but i am extremely upset that i need a new transmission at only 74,000 miles.

When i exit the 87 freeway san jose ca and attempted to drive over the bridge on curtner street my transmission failed and stop moving forward. then my car slip back a few foot because of the angle it was on. luckily the car behind me stop or else i would of hit them. the end result honda would not cover something that they know is common with their product and that is transmission.

Driving down a major road when car started to smoke like crazy, pulled off to side of road then couldn't get car to drive in gear to a very close by service station. had car flatbedded to dealer where i was told the car had transmission failure due to a cracked case (part failure) and needed to be replaced. the dealer contacted district manager to see if we could get a goodwill repair from american honda since it was a failed part and not due to misuse or not having had car serviced. they said they they would cover %25 of a $4300.00 repair to put in a refurbished transmission with a 90 day warranty. i had it towed to a transmission specialty shop who rebuilt the tranny with a 1 year warranty for $2000.00. this seems to be a known problem with the 2003 and 2004 honda accords (recall was done but was vin specific).

While driving my grandson to work, traveling at 45 mph the transmissioon ceased for about 2 seconds, then shifted into a lower gear for a few seconds then ceased again. i stopped turned the engine off for about 5 min. turned it back on and worked find for about 3 min. then it all started again. left my grandson at work & was able to take the vehicle to the honda dealer & paid $81.67 to have the fluid replace. i was driving home and the same symptoms occured & return to the dealer. the dealer then informed me that the transmission needed to be replaced at $4075.00 but, that they will contact the honda rep. in an attempt to offset the cost. honda rep. agreed to pay $864.00 & the remainder ($3211) would be charge to me. my car has 121,941 miles. i am not at all happy with honda, since this vehicle has a recall for this vehicle's problem, what can i do? the vehicle n question is a 2004, honda accord.

This has happened twice while driving on highway. the tcs (traction control) warning light comes on as well the engine icon light, and then the automatic transmission on the 2004 accord v6 won't drop out of high gear. it feels like it's stuck in 5th or 4th gear and won't downshift. i have to stop car, restart it, then the transmission works like normal.

We were lucky that we weren't killed!!! 2004 honda accord exl 6cyl vin#[xxx]. we were traveling on route 95 north of boston in the middle lane at an approx. speed of 60 mph on june 10, 2010 at approx. 6:15pm. i went to pass the car in front of us and started to pull into the passing lane on the left. suddenly, the car jerked violently and slowed down suddenly. the car in back of us almost hit us and swerved into the lane on the right to avoid hitting our car. the other driver was almost run over by a semi truck who jammed on his brakes. i thought he (the truck) was going to jack knife. i see that this transmission problem is a recall item for honda. the honda dealer (kelley honda in lynn, mass.) says that they will not help us financially to replace the transmission. the car has 90,000 miles and is in good shape otherwise. we are very upset at honda's reaction to this safety failure and we feel strongly that the us gov't should step in before people are needlessly killed in cars with this transmission. we also note on the internet that there are tons of people with the same problem and very dangerous experiences. please help and get the word out!!  2004 honda accord accelerated suddenly, slowed down with braking, sped up again and then there was no power although car in gear. i am lucky i did not have an accident. car was towed to dealer's who is asking me for 3969k to replace the failed transmission. car only has 62k miles on it. honda has recalled 2004 accords for the same problem, but refused to cover mine or contribute toward the defective transmission, because my vin was not recalled--although i have the same problem as the recalled vins. nhtsa is not investigating, unfortunately, and people's lives are stake here. *tr updated ivoq 06/08/10.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated when starting the ignition, the check engine light illuminated on the warning panel. the vehicle would not shift into third gear and would not accelerate past 35-40 mph. the vehicle began abnormally jerking and would not increase speed. the vehicle was towed to his residence. an independent mechanic performed a diagnostic and produced failure code p0741 (torque converter). the contact located nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000: power train:automatic transmission, which he believed to be directly related to the failure. the manufacturer stated his vin was not included in the recall and advised having the vehicle towed to the dealer for further inspection. the vehicle had not yet been repaired. the failure mileage and current mileages were 94,000.

While driving to work going about 55mph, the car suddenly downshifted quickly slowing. after a coupl seconds of down shift, the car revd to high rpms and was in felt like it was in neutral (it was actually in drive). i had to coast across 2 lanes to get off the road. once off the road, the transmission was slipping . then it went into gear and i was able to drive on a backroad. but when trying to shift, the car would rev high as it couldn't shift to the next higher hear and acted as if it were in neutral. warning lights or check engine light never came on. the sudden slowing in traffic when it downshifted nearly caused an accident with teh car behind me.

My husband and i were driving on the 405s in his 2004 honda accord 3.0 vtech. while driving uphill transmission started to fluctuate. jumped up to 6 rpms then started slipping. had we waited any longer to pull to the shoulder we would have been in an accident. had mechanic check out problem told us tranmission is shot and we need to replace it. weve been changing fluid every 3 years and i recently had it changed that previous tuesday. i called american honda's corporate office and they told me the only thing i could do was have the honda dealership check it out but the car wont even move so i have no way to get it to the dealership without a tow. then honda will probably tell me that my transmission is dead which i already know then charge me for the service. im pregnant and had it not been for the ability to pull over quickly, my family would not be here and worse off, someone else's family could have been involved.

Car drove fine on parkway. got off and car seemed to skip 3rd gear downshifting into stop signs. turned it off. decided to go to dealer. car drove fine on local streets to parkway. while accelerating and merging into traffic the transmission suddenly and completely failed. no connection between motor and wheels in any gear. coasted off exit ramp. turned car off. restarted and car ran ok for 1/4 mile and then started to miss downshift gears again. had car towed to dealer for transmission replacement.

 1. per the 2004 honda accord owners manual, the transmission fluid does not have to be replaced until 120,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. a few weeks ago, at 92,000 miles, the car was 6 years old so we had the transmission fluid replaced for the first time using honda fluid, all in strict accordance with the honda owner's manual. the mechanic said the original fluid was very gray and there was a lot of metal attached to the drain plug. it looked really bad. 2. on 4/30/10 at 92,500 miles, (500 miles later), we were driving at 35 mph and the car started cutting out. we stopped immediately and the car idled fine. we started to accelerate again and the car would not shift out of first gear. we had car towed immediately to the honda dealer. 3. on 3/31/10, the honda dealer told us that the transmission needs to be replaced. i spoke to the dealer and honda motor company and showed them nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000, which is a recall of the 2004 honda accord automatic transmission, but they told me it was vin specific and suggested i file a complaint with the nhtsa in hopes that the recall would be expanded. *tr

My daughter was driving home from school in our 2004 honda accord ex v6. on the top of the crescent city connection (new orleans bridge), the car stopped accelerating. because she was on an incline, it started rolling back. she panicked but put her foot on the brake. thankfully, a n.o. policeman pulled up and put his lights on calling for the bridge police. bridge police pushed her off bridge. once down she turned off the car, turned it back on and it worked. it happened again on her way home. she turned it off and back on and it started working again. no warning lights come on, it just stops accelerating. honda dealer said technician had to drive it awhile and had same experience. the car didn't give any problem code either but said if we continued to drive it, it would. says transmission needs to be replaced. told him internet site is flooded with similar transmission failures and this is a safety problem. said american honda would assist us if we pay $1,944.24 of the $4,500 to replace the transmission. it's a known problem with the 2003 and 2004 transmission and should be a recall. honda will order the transmission tomorrow to do the work. *tr

My honda accord 2004 has a transmission problem whereby it will drop into neutral during normal driving. the most pronounced time i noticed it, was driving in peak hour traffic and trying to cross lanes of oncoming traffic. just before doing so the car revved to 6000rpm with very little forward acceleration. i had time to cancel my actions to cross, however had the transmission dropped out 2 sec later i would have found myself in the middle of oncoming traffic including trucks at high speed. luckily a major accident was avoided however i fear for the safety of the vehicle. i have since had the car at honda for determination of the fault. they admit there is a defect and have offered to assist with repairs by charging me 1600 to fully replace the transmission. my position is that since honda has already recalled similar 2004 honda accords for transmission issues that they should include my vin in the recall range. honda had issued a corporate release regarding the recall stating it was a significant safety concern and affected 1,000,000 vehicles world wide. i can't help but think my transmission is suffering the same fate as these other accords. *tr

On november 24, 2008 my wife was in an incident where she rear ended the suv in front of her. auto body masters (abm), the officially recommended repair facility for miller honda in culver city, ca, is the repair facility that repaired our car. shortly after january 1, 2009, abm informed us that the transmission was slipping badly and the warning light indicated a malfunction in the transmission. subsequently abm took our car to miller honda to diagnose the problem. after several days, i was told the car needed a new transmission. the service advisor at miller honda told me that after the transmission was replaced, miller honda would make a determination if the accident caused the transmission to malfunction. i was also advised that the transmission would be sent to american honda for a more thorough inspection of the transmission and they actually had the ability to override the dealer decision and the decision to override could be made after the fact. furthermore, i was advised that, if the damage was not caused by the accident it would be covered under the extended service contract we purchased. on january 22, 2009, the transmission was replaced by miller honda. i was informed that an external and internal examination of the transmission found no indication of damage as a result of the accident and thus our honda care extended service contract covered the cost of this repair. i did what research i could on the internet regarding problems with honda accord transmissions and quickly found the transmission in the 2003/2004 v6 accords has a history of failing in such a way as it is common for the car to hesitate and jerk. adding another factor is that some 2004 accords had a recall for transmission problems. with all these issues in mind, it has become clear that the cause of my wife's accident is not as clear cut as it first appears. my wife's recollection of the incident has consistently been that. *tr

Driving honda accord on sh 121, pressed the accelerator and engine started revving but car wouldn't go. tried shifting into other drives and back into drive thinking that maybe it was stuck in between gears (even though it's an automatic) and the car would go for a bit then do the same thing. i eventually had to pull off the road with my hazard lights on hoping i wouldn't get rear ended. called and had my car towed to the dealer. first the keys were lost somewhere between the tow truck and the dealership, then the dealer first couldn't replicate what had happened and after we told them to let the car warm up some more, they did replicate it. so we went from there's nothing wrong with your car to you need the whole transmission replaced. this for a honda that doesn't have 100k on it yet. checked websites and seems this isn't an uncommon thing with this car and still waiting to hear what, if anything honda will do to correct their problem. the car hasn't had any symptoms and has always been serviced at the dealer and had its scheduled maintenance performed. i bought a honda so i wouldn't have these problems. i feel ripped off. *tr

Drove home from vacation and car was fine. next morning driving to work felt transmission begin to slip. on way home from work the transmission began slipping and rpm's shot up to 5000 to almost 6,000 and car decreased speed rapidly, car jerked and began to go again. waited until i could get to a empty straight road and tried to increase speed rapidly and same thing occurred- rpm's shot up and car not in gear. drove next day to work and car did same thing. had to have car towed from work. honda says there isn't a recall and have not had any complaints to this, it could be that the proper service has not been completed by you. well i have my car serviced every 3,000 miles and had transmission fluid flushed every 10,000. last time it was flushed none of their service tech thought there was a problem due to not being serviced properly. *tr

We have owned many hondas in our past with no problem but this one ... i just don't know. the morning of december 2, we were driving it on the highway to find it slipping gear between gears 1 and 2, and 2 and 3. so at the end of the day we stopped by the honda dealership. they literally drove it around and told us right away that it was the transmission. after a quote of $3800 (approximately), we tried to drive it home less than 4 miles and it died on the way. we had it towed to a local transmission place who took a further look at it and the 2nd and 3rd gears are totally gone and the 4th gear is about to go. they are trying to fix it with a quote of $2900. this is quite unsafe, had we not decided to get it checked out right away, someone could have gotten hurt! *tr

My 2004 accord transmission started slipping at 105000. i was on the interstate on the way to work and felt loss of power and realized transmission was slipping. i slowed down and drove in the far right lane and stopped a few times but made it to work. i brought it to the closest transmission place and they confirmed transmission failure and quoted $2900 for rebuilt tranny and maybe more if the computer was also a problem. i also called the local honda dealer and after some hassle they reduced their original estimate from $3900 to $3400. i called honda america customer service and they would do nothing more. i got the repair (rebuilt tranny) and when i paid the bill it was for $2900. still a lot but at least not more than the tranny place. i told all the honda folks i talked to that i had 3 hondas and always was happy with their reliability. but considering the information i read about the tranny problems and honda's lack of concern, and what i personally experienced, no more hondas for me! *tr

There were no problems prior to sudden failure of my transmission in my 2004 honda accord. i was driving down the road when my car suddenly dropped speed. the engine revved, while my car went no where. left me stranded in the middle of a extremely busy road (with my 2 young children in the car). i had to have it towed and was told by a mechanic that my transmission was completely shot and had to either be replaced or rebuilt....it only has 85,000 miles on it. i have yet to get it fixed because i have been doing my research, and this seems to be a very popular problem. quite confused as to how a car can go from working just fine, to needing a completely new transmission within a matter of minutes. *tr

My 2004 honda accord ex v6 has about 88k on it. while driving at about 45miles/per hour the car started jerking, then it started revving the engine, increasing the rpm's to 5000 revs even when my foot was not on the gas pedal. the car wouldn't go faster than 15/miles per hour. its been taken to a mechanic where they said the transmission is gone and needs to be replaced. i was shocked because i've never heard of a car's transmission failing before hitting 100k, let alone a honda which is supposed to be reliable. i went online and found 100's of complaints about the 2004 honda accords with transmission problems, and one of the post led me to this website. i'm a very careful driver and most of the mileage put on the car has been highway miles. i called a local dealer and they said they couldn't do anything about this and to replace the transmission would cost me about $3500. please help in this case as i'm sure you've gotten similar complaints about this vehicle which leads me to believe that honda needs to have some type of recall. *tr

2004 honda accord with 44k miles needs transmission replaced. contacted honda customer care. there is a recall for some 2004 accords for faulty transmission that could result in serious accident (nhtsa: 04v176000). honda says our vin does not qualify for recall. car was purchased brand new from honda dealer and all routine maintenance has been completed on schedule and all work done by honda dealership. this is not normal for a brand new car, with all routine maintenance work completed, to require a total transmission replacement with only 44 k miles. honda has agreed to pay 60% of the repair costs. honda is aware of the manufacturing defect with these transmissions (ie, the recall). the defect investigation should be extended to additional honda vin's as there is obviously more cars with faulty transmissions that could lead to serious injuries. *tr

Commuting to work in the morning, when i was getting on the freeway the car seemed to slip out of gear. the rpm's went very high (7k), but i couldn't accelerate at all. i coasted for a while and was eventually able to accelerate normally again. the car behaved normally the rest of the time on the freeway, but had the same thing happen again after i exited the freeway. after stopping at an intersection, i couldn't get out of 1st gear for a while. after work, i drove the car around the back streets for a little to see if i thought i could get home, figuring that once i got on the freeway, everything would be fine. after a few miles on the freeway, it happened again. i couldn't accelerate at all, and had to cut across 4 lanes with just my momentum to pull over on the shoulder. once there, i restarted the car and tried to see if i could move at all. i couldn't. in park, i could rev the engine and see the rpm's increase, but when i shifted to drive or reverse, i couldn't get the engine to engage or move at all. i restarted the car several times, and eventually got it to respond, but shortly after getting back on the freeway, it happened again, so i pulled over once more and called a tow truck. the tow truck got me back to the honda dealer, where i later found out i needed a new transmission. this is a 2004 with 90k miles. *tr

2004 honda accord v-6 66,000 miles i have had all recommended services performed on my car with the dealership thinking this would keep my car safe, which failed to be the case. my transmission went out with only having 66,000 miles. while driving this vehicle, my car would not accelerate beyond 45 miles which could have caused an accident. i placed a formal complaint with the company and they would only honor 75% of the fee to fix the transmission. after stating it was unsafe and unfair and i would seek legal action, they forced me to sign a release form or they would not honor the 75% fee required for the dealership to fix the transmission. i feel this car is unsafe to the consumer especially if they have their transmission go out while driving on the freeway. at 66,000 miles with a history of all required maintenance performed, it just seems this vehicle had a factory defected transmission. i feel honda is aware there is a problem with this make/model year transmission but isn't taking responsibility for their product and it could be unsafe on the road. *tr

The automatic transmission comes out of gear at any time and at any speed or downshifts into first gear even while on the highway going 70 mph causing the vehicle to abruptly slow down. this may be related to nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000 but honda told me that this does not apply to my vin number. i brought the car to a honda dealer and they said it needs a new transmission. *tr

I have complained to honda about my transmission slipping, almost stalling out and then taking a huge jerk...it normally happens when letting up off my gas...this has been ongoing for almost 2 years; last night i had the ride of my life in only a matter of seconds! i was stopping by the bank to get cash from the atm; as i let up off my gas, the car did a hard jerk and jumped the sidewalk hitting the corner of the bank. i'm so glad no one was using the atm at this time. my airbag never deployed and my seat belt released for me to get out but now it is jammed and will not pull out enough for me to wear it! with all the complaints i've found that are very similar to mine going back as early as 2003, i really feel that honda should take these complaints more serious and that they should be held responsible for repairing the issue and any damages incurred due to the issue. i am a nervous wreck and i hope no one will experience what i just went through. there should be a thorough investigation requiring honda to fix this problem. *tr

When i drive 40mph to 60phm under light to moderate load my vehicle shakes and vibrates excessively. i have asked my local honda dealer on any service bulletins but apparently nothing outside of my airbag. i am concerned because a lot of people report online the exact same problem. honda case # n012008-04-1100-403 honda at 1-800-999-1009 nhtsa campaign id number : 04v176000 my car a 2004 honda accord 4 door 4 cylinder. when i am drive at a speed of about 25 mph the car trembles/shakes momentarily and then continues to gain speed. if i continue driving at about 25 mph the car trembles/shakes momentarily without warning. the same issue with trembling and shaking happens also when i drive the car at a speed of about 40 mph. this issue does not occur at any other driving speed ranges. the second gear in the automatic transmission momentarily trembled the car. i have been told by the dealership that this problem can cause gear failure and transmission lockup resulting in a crash. the driving tremble problem started happening at about 50k miles. i brought the car to the dealership and the problem could not be replicated so it was not repaired. i brought the car back at 75k, 80k, 85k, 90k. finally at 95k the problem could be easily detected by the mechanics and they wanted to try some simple changes. first the mechanics tried fuel injector cleaners. at 97k the mechanics tried changing the erg or ekg valve. at 99k the mechanic changed the catalytic converted heat shield and changed the spark plugs. the problem continue at 101k the mechanic now tells me the problem is with the transmission and that i should think about replacing the transmission because the wear of the gears can cause a tooth to chip or gear breakage which could result in the gear failure. the gear failure can result in a transmission lockup, which could result in a crash. i am upset because the car transmission was under warranty from 80k to 100k miles and i had bought the honda care warranty. now it. *tr

This complaint is related to a 2004 honda accord v6 #, purchased new by my wife and myself in bellevue washington. 1. background: my honda accord was recalled under this ntsb recall (honda recall 04-037 speed sensor 3rd gear inspection): automatic transmission recalls and defects found on 2004 honda accord power train:automatic transmission automobiles. the national highway traffic safety administration is authorized to order the 2004 honda accord power train:automatic transmission manufacturers to recall and repair vehicles or parts of motor vehicle equipment when its investigation indicates that they contain serious safety defects in their structure, or performance. to remedy the recall honda performed a camera visual inspection and sprayed ?lubricant? into the transmission. on september 15th 2008, my wife observed an ?engine light? on the dash. we immediately brought the vehicle with approximately 88,000 miles back to the dealership. i initially directed the work to begin. i then called back to asked the service manager to hold on the repairs and asked him to wait and investigate alternatives. i was told that the warranty had been extended, that there was a recall and that an 88k car should be covered. i verified that the warranty for most honda accord v6's had been extended. i then called back to honda and was told at 130pm that the light reset and there was no need for repair and that the service manager, mr. ortiz would not pursue warranty repair of the transmission. 2. my concern is that my transmission has secondary indications of pending transmission failure. when the service manager realized that this was a warranty issue, he was willing to send the transmission, with a likely pending failure back on the road and not complying with the ntsb recall. according to the recall there is a probability of catastrophic transmission failure and crash. estimated vehicles affected: 1099796. *tr

My vehicle began to experience transmission problems on february 14th, 2005: the gears would engage harshly when accelerating on city streets and on freeway on-ramps. there were a few instances when the engine over-revved on the freeway because of a shifting problem. i experienced total transmission failure on february 14th, 2005, while driving on city streets. the vehicle was inoperable, and had to be taken to a mechanic. i was told by the mechanic that the transmission underwent extensive damage and had to be rebuilt. the mechanic advised me to contact american honda and try to get them to repair or replace the transmission free of charge, since my vehicle may have been recalled under nhtsa bulletin 04v176000. honda would not honor my request, as it the vehicle was manufactured after the dates specified in the bulletin. however, the vehicle had an odometer reading of only 42,200 miles when the transmission failed; nevertheless, american honda refuses to act upon my request for service and repair. i believe bulletin 04v176000 should be amended to include more-recently manufactured 2004 v-6 accord sedans. *nm

I have a 2004 honda accord lx with a four cylinder engine. last year i reported a defect whereby the vehicle was attempting to accelerate while i was in the act of stopping. i had to use both feet on the brake pedal, put the transmission into neutral and kick the accelerator pedal to get the engine to come back to idle. when i put the transmission into neutral the engine rpm's went up to almost 6000. i had the vehicle checked by herb chambers honda, in burlington, mass and they found nothing wrong. however, on dec 8, 2005, i was making a left hand turn into a parking lot at a very low rate of speed and the vehicle did the very same thing! it took both feet on the brake pedal, put the transmission into neutral, the engine sped up to almost 6000 rpm's, kick the accelerator pedal and finally the engine dropped to idle. this concerns me greatly. i'm seventy years old and i recognized the problem, but my wife who is seventy-two and who doesn't use the car too often, may not recognize the problem, be able to think of the solution and handle the vehicle all at once. it could end up killing her or someone else! vin number of vehicle is: 1hgcm56304a006527 thank you. *nm

On thursday march 11, 2010 my wife and i were traveling in our 2004 honda accord on a 45 mph road. when making a left turn on a green light, my shifter popped out of 2nd gear and into neutral causing the engine to rev to the redline. in neutral, the car lost power and coasted to a stop in the middle of the intersection with the oncoming traffic speeding directly towards the passenger side of the car where my wife was sitting. additionally, we were almost rear-ended by the car behind us also making a left turn. this problem with the shifter is occurring with increasing frequency, and has become an extreme danger to me, my family, and everyone else on the same roads as i. my trusted mechanic examined the car and determined the transmission is failing and needs to be completely replaced. i will be fortunate to have this done for under $2000. he could not believe this happened to a newer honda with as low millage as mine. i

I owned a 2004 honda accord 2 door coupe. i filed for lemon law because american honda refused to fix a major transmission oil leak in the car. i have won the lemon law case, but when i found out that american honda was not going to recall all the cars with that transmission, i felt like i had to do something. the problem is due to a low vent valve on the six speed manual transmission. the manual transmission only holds 2 quarts of oil. i purchased the car in 9/2004. from 9/2004 to 9/2005, i witnessed well over a quart of oil spill out and onto the bottom of the transmission and engine. i have a detailed outline that i can e-mail you on request outlining all of the visits to the dealership and the outcome of each visit. the location where this oil comes out, is also where the clutch is located. i had noticed clutch slippage soon after buying the car. i am assuming the clutch was slipping due to the oil soaking the clutch plate and disk. i would like to see a full recall done on all of these transmissions. american honda admitted that they have modified the 2005 transmission to resolve this issue, but will not recall the old transmission. *jb
