 Due to the agency's investigation into this matter, honda agreed to conduct a safety recall to notify owners of the 1996-1998 honda civics and install a positive floor mat retention system on the driver's side (genuine honda) floor mat.furthermore, honda will conduct a product improvement campaign to inspect and replace certain model year 1996 civic throttle cables equipped with cables not having the latest revisions. since each throttle cable is date coded the subject cables are easily identifiable.this investigation is closed; further use of the agency resources does not appear warranted.the agency may take further action on this matter if warranted by future circumstances.see full closing resume for additional details.

 The consumer stated that while driving the vehicle accelerated to 40 mph. the consumer hit the brakes, but nothing happened. he finally went off the road into a garden and hit a wall. the consumer was knocked unconscious. the consumer sustained minor injuries, and was taken to the hospital where he was checked out and released. the police had the vehicle towed. consumer was then advised by the police to contact the manufacturer. *ak recall# 99i002000. *sc

 While parking the car at an apartment complex, i slowly pulled the car into a spot. the car following saw my brake lights. i had my foot on the brake and was about to put the car in park and there was a strange noise that sounded like overdrive and the car surged forward into a reinforced concrete wall. my foot was on the brake the whole time but i could not control the car, the wall stopped us from moving. my mother was a passenger and said that i shouted what is happening? we sustained injuries as a result of the accident and have been out of work.

 1996 honda civic dx experiences sticky acceleration, must apply considerable pressure to accelator when stopped which causes car to lunge forward. this was reported to dealer while under warranty and appeared to be corrected, but condition reappeared. car was recalled for fuel throttle and repaired, but this did not correct the sticky accelerator. the emergency brake does not engage most of the time. the button to release the brake stays in which keeps the brake disengaged. the windshield whistles at road speeds.

 While driving at 30 mph vehicle accelerated by itself, causing vehicle hit something, and the consumer had to apply both feet on the brakes to bring vehicle to a stop. *ak

 In the first incident, the vehicle was being driven between 60- 85 mph and suddenly accelerated until the driver stepped on the brakes. the dealer acknowlwdged that the accelerator had struck and stated that the cable needed replacing. during the second incident, the vehicle was traveling between 30-45 mph and continued to accelerate while the driver stepped on the brakes. the driver reach down and pulled the accelerator pedal up to stop the vehicle. again the dealer stated that the cable needed repalcing. *ak

 Owner states while driving at about 35-40mph on a congested highway the throttle got stuck, causing vehicle to accelerate to 60-70 mph. the car could be stopped by turning off the ignition which is also dangerous in congested traffic. owner does not know what caused this problem, but he notes that he could have been killed. *ak

 I owned a 1996 honda civic ex, bought it new. i was in an accident on june 13th of 1998. it was considered my fault because i pulled out into the path of the other vehical. but i didn't, the car took off i could not get it to stop. ..i tryed to get it out of the way of the other car. but was unable to move out of the way.which ended up in an accident totaling my car, and hurting my back! i still to this day suffer with my back. i was not told about the recall on my car. i don't think its very fare i've had to suffer all this time and was not told about this problem with my car. i was hit in the side by a truck doing 45-50 miles an hour. my passenger and i could have been killed! and if my childern had been in the car they would have been!!has to much time passed for me to do anything about it? i had to pay high insurance premiums for 3 years,suffer from back pain all the time. *ak

 I recently purchased a 1996 honda civic with a manual transmission. the cruise control works only intermittently, and usually it does not work. at times when going over 40 mph on the rare occasion that i have gotten the cruise control to work, it just clicks off by itself. i am disabled and must have cruise control when driving for any significant period of time. i need to know if there is a fix for this. *jb

 Vehicle has been at dealer 4-5 times to repair throttle.vehicle hesitates at any speed with no warning. when throttle gets stuck consumer has to press down on throttle. then ease up, and reapply to accelerate. dealer have never been able to duplicate problem in order to repair it. recall 99i002000 doesn't affect consumer's vehicle due to vin. *ak
