I was driving 50mph when my air bags deployed for no reason. the explosion was herendous. i put on my brakes which put my car in a sideways slide almost sending it over the cliff into the river. it was a horrifying experience. the windshield broke and my dash split. there was no impact at all. the air bag broke my new prescription glasses, bruised my face, and cut my lip. my son whom was with me is complaining of pain in his stomach where the air bag hit him. i see many other complains concerning faulty air bags but read honda is not taking responsibility. these faulty bags are a life threatening issue and honda should recall and fix this problem now

The airbag warning light is illuminated on my 1997 honda civic cx. i took it to the dealer and they reset the light. the mechanic told me that if it comes on again only thing they can do is replace the computer that triggers the airbag at a cost of about $500 including parts and labor. after looking online i saw that many honda are having this problem with srs lights. i guy wrote that he had his replaced three times in as many years and still has this same problem. other people have reported that the airbags have deployed while they were driving less than 5 mph over a speed bump. another guy reported that his airbag failed to deploy when he hit a car. in both cases no one was seriously injured but the fact remains that the srs system on these cars are not reliable. honda of america is washing their hands of these cars. they say they are not responsible for systems that are over 10 years old. please help us get them to do a recall. we would not mind spending the money but honda will only warrant the repair for one year and then we have to pay all over again. thanks for your time. *tr

1997 honda civic - srs light remaining on a lot of what could cause this light to come on is not covered under the safety warranty. just resetting it can cost $100 and there is not a guarantee it will stay off to allow the airbag to function. reading others problems with this there seem to be wide spread issues with the srs system. some of these repairs have cost in excess of $1000. after reading so many questions and complaints about it (for example www.carcomplaints.com), i wonder why it is not a safety recall item. the srs light and problems with the system seem to be in civics, accords, and preludes. *tr

There was no accident, only failure of the srs control unit of my 1997 honda civic dx hatchback (3 door) with 46,000 miles. i'd say it's reasonable to demand that safety equipment be covered for the lifetime of the car. for my safety restraint system (srs control unit for the airbags), which i've *never* used, to cost me $760 to repair is outrageous! it's probably an $80 computer part. *nm

The srs system in my honda civic ex 1997 went out when i had first purchased the used car in june 2004 with around 145,00 miles on it. i had a new srs electrical system put in . it has been two years and the system has gone out again. i now have to fix it again and my car specialist has told me that the price has doubled on the part, and that this is a common occurrence in honda civics. *nm

Srs light came on 1/24/03 and stayed on. took to dealer, manchester honda, on 1/28/03 for service and was told srs unit failure code 7-2. i have a 1997 honda civi with 71,464 miles on it. the part that needs replacement is #77960-s04-n81. the part costs $368.70 and the installation charge quoted for me was $72.00. it cost me 85.86 to have the problem diagosed. the service repair man insisted this was not a defective part, i would have to pay for repairs. i've researched your web site and found numberous bulletins detailing failure of the srs system with the 1997 honda civic. i also found recent similar complaints regarding the srs system for 2003 honda civics and 2002 honda accords. clearly this is a safety defect that honda and nhtsa has known about for some time and there has yet to be a recall. this poses a threat to my personal safety. i was explicity told that until i have this repair done, the control system for the srs would not deploy the airbags in my car should i get into an accident. i am forced to make an expensive repair to a defective honda component that the dealer should be paying for and correcting. and yet they are obviously ignoring the problem and selling 2003 models that obviously have the same defective components. honda needs to be ordered to begin a recall immediately, since they obviously are not interested in fixing the problem voluntarily.

Srs light has come on 3 times. the first two visits petersen motors reset the system, found nothing. the first time petersen motors suggested it was caused by low battery voltage. nonsense, they didn't find the problem and the battery is new. they cleared the code and charged $72. after the 2nd visit, i was told if it happens again they would have to replace the driver's airbag. after the 2nd visit the light came back on within 2 weeks. after 3rd incident, petersen motors stated over the phone it is the control unit which would cost about $460 to replace. on each of the 3 occasions, i stopped the car briefly. when i restarted my car, the srs light came on and stayed on. at this time i haven't had this problem fixed. 2 of 4 original firestone tires failed. the 1st failure occurred as i drove the car off the lot - it had a radial pull, causing the car to turn upon acceleration. the 2nd firestone tire failure occurred at about 26,000 miles. after driving several hours at 75 mph on a 95 degree day, there was a bulge in the sidewall. at that time i replaced all 4 tires with a different brand. nlm

Srs control unit is the electrical / computer part that runs the air bag system and has failed twice in the past 14 months. the srs light remains lit at start-up. the replacement part is $360+ alone. i believe this is a problem with these parts in hondas, as my parent's accord has a similar problem and i have found other owner's complaints posted across the internet. american honda (as i am sure other manufacturers are the same) won't stand behind these computer/electrical parts for more than 12 months / 12,000 miles. i believe a vital safety component such as this should be designed and built with warrantee to last longer than the headlights and other non-essential electrical parts. i am sure other honda owners have been victimized, as i have been twice now in 5 years, by this faulty component.*ak

I own a 97 honda civic lx 4dr and have been in 3 accidents w/o air bag deployment. in 9/98 i was rear-ended at 40 mph which bent the frame of my car and cost several thousand to repair. honda service said that the airbags would not deploy unless there was a sudden decel and/or frontal impact. a few mos later in 01/99, i was in an accident and the police rpt states that i broadsided a 81 cadillac on the front driver's side at approx 35 mph. the front end of the cadillac was detroyed. i injured my neck, back, and shoulder as the seat belt did not lock when i flew forward. after the accident, i went to honda cars of mesa for body repair. it cost several thousand $, w/ significant front end damage and a bent frame. my air bags did not deploy in this accident. i requested an air bag fcheck and my friend and i were told by the mgr of service that the air bags were ok and the srs knows when to deploy the airbags. he said that the collision was not enough to cause the airbags to deploy; however, i had direct frontal impact at 35 mph. my car was also backed over by a garbage truck in5/99 w/o air bag deployment. in 04/03, i began to have probs with the srs light coming on and staying on. the light was staying on until the car was restarted. within 2 wks, my srs light stayed on. i took my car to a honda certified mechanic. he said the srs unit was bad and the code given was 7-2, 7-3 which indicates a bad unit and requires replacement. the part cost was $370. and the labor was $75. the day after the repair, the srs light came on and stayed on. within 2 mos the part went bad and the unit gave the code 7-2, which indicates replacement w/o diagnostics. he felt the initial part may have been bad and replaced it w/ honda's parts warranty, but if it happened again, there was another cause for the malfunction.the prob happened the day after i left the shop and the light is on again during most trips. my mechanic stated that the dealer will need to contact their tac.

The air bag deployed and apparently burst causing severe eye injury a twelve year old child (my son) who was waering his seat belt. from the initial diagnosis of the ambulance crew to his chief cornea & other eye specialist - all of the damage was caused by the deployment of the air bag. we were struck from the driver's side by a speeding vehicle at an intersection in saginaw michigan. because of the intensive injuries to my son, his care was transfered to the kellogg center, the regional eye trauma & care experts in michigan. according to chris surgeons - he sustained the most massive injuries (void of a fatality) surgeons has seen at the regional center. every major part ofo his eye was damaged, the cornea- burned, the iris torn in several places, the lend dislocated & erupted (it has since been replaced), retina scarring, occular bone fractures, lost his upper tear duct, torn, seperated eye lid, and several others injuries internal to the eye and the facial area around his left eye, the left eye was the only eye damaged. my son is still undergoing surgeries, and other restorative medical procedures to restore his vision & his apearance. i tried to contact the honda corporation to no avail. i also contacted the u.s. dept of transp safety to report the accident shortly after the accident - i was sent a form and spoke with a representative. i am filing this report as an assured way of having this case investigated, noted or looked into, this much damage should not have been done to my child. his physicians agree to this given their history of treating air bag injuries. thus, one could conclude the air bad malfunctioned. i have since discovered scores of articles about the dangers of air bags - it bothers me that the public is made aware of thier dangers to infants but not as they relate to young children. i seek some follow-up t o this problem. the car displayed a made in america sticker on the back. i don't think that matters but i have owned hond

My 1997 honda civic srs light has come on 6 times within the past 5 years. each time i brought it to honda service they said it was internal failure and reset it. they claimed it was caused by low battery charge, but then they declared battery was good. finally had to replace the srs module unit. the new unit only has 12 month warranty. isn't the srs unit a safety feature and shouldn't it be covered by lifetime warranty? first incident began in october 2003, followed by oct 2005, nov 2006, jun 2007, sep 2007, and finally in mar 2008. *tr

Airbag system inoperable. the airbag light came on during routine driving. a check with honda service shows that the airbag module failed. honda needs to replace the airbag module in order for the airbag system to work at a significant cost to the owner. there are many other people that report a similar problem. *nm

On august 04, 2004, i visited the honda dealership because the indicator light on the supplemental restraint system (srs) readiness indicator lamp of my honda civic 1997 dx had turned red. when they checked my car, they said that they got a dtc code of 08-5 from the srs module. i was told that it meant srs control unit failure. the dealerships reset the srs unit. a year after, the same condition recurred. i was then told that srs control unit needed to be replaced. if no action were taken, the uncorrected illumination of the srs readiness indicator lamp can hinder the detection of potential vital airbag system operation of components such as airbag module, crash sensor and wiring integrity. the diagnostic service and part costs has deterred me from servicing this recurring problem. the estimated cost of the parts and service is over $800.00. i have never been in any incident or accident wherein the airbags were deployed. i believe that the srs control unit should be guaranteed throughout the life time of the vehicle. i strongly believe that this is a serious safety issue. nowadays, when i drive the car, i do not feel as secure as i did, for i am uncertain if the airbag would deploy at all, in case i get into an accident. when i spoke with american honda's customer representative today, 4/10/2006. i was told that they would do nothing, that i am personally responsible to get it repaired. *nm

The srs (airbag) computer stopped working on my 1997 honda civic ex for no reason and after no incident. i have been told by the service department that this means that the airbags may or may not deploy in case of a crash. the computer part number is 77960-s04-n81. the price for the part alone is $697 and labor is an additional $150. i contacted honda and they offered me a 25% discount because i had maintenance performed by the dealer. they told me that they could not offer any more since records indicate that i only own one honda and because they could only show me going to the dealer for the past two years for maintenance. i was told that there was a limited lifetime warranty on the seat belts, but not the airbags. the case manager (carolyn) told me that they didn't even have to offer me this. when asked why the seat belts were covered and not the airbags (which are an important safety feature of the car and required by federal law), she said that it was a business decision. since honda sells so many civics and since the car is durable enough to be driven for many miles, i believe that there is a substantial safety risk to many people if even a small fraction of these computers go out. combined with the fact that the repair is a third of the trade in value of the car and honda's unwillingness to adequately remedy this problem, i believe that this is an important issue that needs to be addressed immediately.*jb

I recently purchased a 1997 honda civic from my sister, who did not realize that the srs light being on was a problem. it has been on for the last 4 years (since about 60k miles). i am looking into having it replaced, but according to my research, honda does not know how to fix it. everything that i have read about this problem indicates that it is a $400+ repair and the repair does not last. they have blamed it on a multitude of things including using a cell phone, a low battery, and a defective part. this makes honda vehicles unreliable and more importantly, unsafe. i have read about this problem on many different makes and models of honda vehicles.

In december 2002, we replaced the air bag sensor/control module in our 1997 after the srs warning system light activated and the computer confirmed the problem. less than two years later, the same problem recurred (august 2004), and american honda is refusing to replace the part ($400+) because the one-year warranty has expired. it took nearly 95,000 miles for the first unit to fail, and less than 20,000 for the second one to fail. this is my third and, will be my last, honda.*ak

Srs light stayed on. dealer stated bad unit, cost unit:$495.00 labor:$119.25 mileage:43,203 this is my third honda, but the first to give any problems. although i could find no recall issued about srs units in honda's, i did find 47 complaints filed with nhtsa(not counting mine). i didn't include numerous reports of failure to deploy airbags, airbags deploying w/o cause and airbags deploying w/o inflating. i find it very disheartening that a company such as honda would hide a obviously dangerous safety defect from it's consumers.
