During the day the inside of my car had a burning plastic smell. later that night, my headlight low beams would not work. i had to drive home with the passing beams wedged on. today i took the headlight/turn signal switch off of the steering column. the assembly had started to melt and the harness connector that was attached to it is singed! apparently i am not the first to have this problem in a honda vehicle. please let me know what can be done. *tr

After i replaced a failed battery in our 2000 honda civic, the car ran rough after getting warm and stalled twice in traffic. while no one suffered more than rattled nerves in this case, it is possible that someone could be injured or killed in such circumstances. i subsequently found from the dealer at a cost of $162 that the car loses track of its idle setting when the battery is replaced and it has to be re-entered. this information is not in the owners manual. this is both a stupid and unsafe design, let alone expensive. changing a battery is a common and ordinarily simple procedure practiced by millions of people. i think honda should have to send warning car owners of this feature of their car and how to reset the code them selves or with instruction to take it to a dealer who will reset it at no cost. alternatively, honda should be required to retrofit the cars with non volatile memory so the car does not require such service. i don't know when this feature was added to honda designs, but it does not happen on our earlier model. our experience may be just the tip of a coming iceberg. *jb

Manual transmission jumps while driving also does not want to go into second gear. makes wierd grinding sound while driving slow. car shutters and shakes violently while in 5th gear in excess of 70 mph. car shuts off by its self( was told vin not in sequence for ignition recall). right front springs sticks and some times makes a ( boing ) sound. car keeps pulling to right even after alignment. when heater or defroster are on they make a loud chirping sound. on cold or rainy days steam will pour out of engine compartment smelling like radiator fluid. was in 2 minor accidents one front end colision one rear end colission both about 30 mph and air bags did not deploy. engine is becoming rusty and coroded. drivers power window is slow to go up and front seat belts will not retract. engine light comes on and car loses power and gas mielage. goes offf when gas tank is filled. car has been to dealer numerous times for honda scheduled service and also while it was under warranty. all the problems adressed above were told to dealer who said they could not find a problem..but they sure did when my warranty expired. now they will not fix anyhting unless i pay for it. *jb

The problems i recently faced with my 2000 honda civic vp model:1. transmission spontaneously skip gears and causes my car to jerk and loose control for a period of time. 2. when the car downshifts/slows down the transmission also skips or do not downshift smoothly, thus causing the car to jerk. causes minor strains to the passenger's and the driver's neck. 3. whenever i or my family get out of the vehicle we get static shock. this is extremely dangerous for a family who have a baby or children. 4. car dies when i put the car in neutral and i loose power steering and other primary car functions. this uncertain event can cause potential fatality or serious car accidents.*ak

I bought a used 2000 honda civic dx that would sputter very quickly sporadically. it became more frequent as i drove it more. now it will just shut down and have to sit before it will start again. this is very, very dangerous to me and my daughter as we work the night shift and have had this happen to us on the freeway. we could have been killed, or killed others if they would have hit us in the middle of the freeway! as i'm finding out, there is some kind of unofficial recall on the honda's ignition switches. is this true? we need to get to the bottom of this, as i have had it put on a diagnostic machine and it doesn't read any codes being defective.....it won't unless it's doing it at the time. what can i do? *tr

I have had quite a few problems with this poorly made vehicle. one, the ignition switch problem. i have called for help with no success. thank you by the way honda! the key gets stuck in the ignition and needs to be started a couple of times to get it out.*ak next problem, the car's transmission is terrible. very jumpy on highway, engine is quite clumsy on regular road driving. now the main problem why i have come here because i feel i was wronged considering i bought practically a new vehicle. (i was less than 2 years old when i had first purchased it). this being my first newer vehicle, i guess i can say i owned older cars that held together much better. the car for the past month has been very jumpy on the highway. it feels like it wants to stall when driving, which makes me feel very endangered when driving. i recently found out by my own exploration that there is an ignition switch recall. according to the honda.com website that i registered with, there is no safety recalls, (where they fail to mention all other recalls). nothing is posted on this. i have been to numerous mechanics and finally may have found that the ignitor is bad. funny enough i know 2 other people with hondas who have replaced their's at their own expense. now, i contacted the local honda with no help! they to call american honda (which i did) and apparently honda decided to recall some of the cars with these ignitor's in them. i will be making plenty of calls to get heard. i thought that honda was a stable name. apparently not since there is plenty of complaints in the air (which would be expected, because things do go wrong). anyway, i am glad i got to complain here. hopefully i will be heard. let it also be said, i am a struggling college student who was looking to only buy a stable car, and instead got a world of headaches!

After returing to my parked car, i put the key in and turned the key, no dashboard lights went on and the engine did not crank. i turned it back to the off position, turned off the vent blower and tried again. then it started just fine. another time i waited 30 seconds and it started after failing the first time. honda says (9/30/2002) my car isn't included in the ignition switch recall. it wouldn't fail for the dealer. right now, i'm guessing that i don't need to do anything with with the blower switch, just retrying the ignition seems like it will work. we'll see when it occurs again. mr

I was driving home from work on friday evening, september 16, 2005, at approximately 5:30 pm est in my 2000 honda civic lx 4dr sedan. i came to a complete stop at a stop street, and was about to accelerate and make a right turn. i started moving and then my car went completely dead and stalled. i was able to get the car to the side of the road, put it in park, and then restart it. however, from that point forward, i found as i would be coming to a stop and idling, that the car would want to go completely dead and stall on me. i took my car to our dealership, autosport honda, in bridgewater, nj, and had them take a look at the problem. they told me that the ignition switch was in need of a tune up, and that the wires leading from the ignition to the engine were deteriorating. i decided to look my vin number up to see if there were any recalls. i found, based on the honda civic lx 4dr sedans, that there was a recall may 16, 2002 (campaign number 02v120000) for the electrical system component, more specifically, the ignition switch. the recall states electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade due to the high electrical current passing through the switch when the vehicle is started. the recall further states that worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. i brought this to my dealerships attention, and he told me he already ran my vin number (1hgej6674yl033640), and that it was not registered under the recall. i asked him if this was the same type of component problem as in the recall and he said yes. he said it is more common in stick-shift hondas then automatics. i am bring this to your attention because the issue i am having with my vehicle is the same issue that was recalled in may 2002, except under different vin numbers. i believe this is a serious issue, and attention should be given to it. *nm

American honda motor corp. has refused to honor recall of the ignition switch on my 2000 civic, despite that the symptoms are exactly as described in their recall and model and year are consistent . they tell me my vin number is not in the designated sequence. the car stalls for no reason when stopped at lights, etc. this is dangerous, as acknowledged by honda in their recall description. *nm

I took my 2000 honda civic to a local dealership a year ago to see why my car would stall for no apparent reason. happened maybe once every three months and i'm concerned of a crash. dealership ran several tests and could not find a thing wrong. since then my vehicle stills stalls for no apparent reason maybe once every few months. usually i don't think about it until it happens. i researched the internet for recalls and found there is a recall for the electrical system:ignition:switch. nhtsa campaign id number : 02v120000. i called honda at 1-800-999-1009 and was told my vehicle number was not part of the recall. i truly believe this is what's wrong with my car so my complaint is honda's vehicle number scope needs to include my vehicle so i can safely drive without fear that my car will stall and cause a crash. see below for details make : hondamodel : civicyear : 2000 nhtsa campaign id number : 02v120000 recall date : may 13, 2002 component: electrical system:ignition:switch potential number of units affected : 1000000 on certain sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and sport utility vehicles, electrical contacts in the ignition switch can degrade due to the high electrical current passing through the switch when the vehicle is started. consequence: worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. remedy: dealers will replace the ignition switch. owner notification began june 14, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009 or acura at 1-800-382-2238. notes: customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).*ak

When the car was 2 weeks old, we returned from a drive and found the car would not shut off, even with the ignition in the off position and the key removed. the engine sounded as though it was trying to start itself, even though it was still running. i put the key back in and turned it to the on position, at which point the unusual noise disappeared, and the car seemed to idle normally. i turned it off again, and the noise returned as the car kept running. i turned the key on and off a few times before the engine finally stopped. as i got out of the car, i noticed smoke rising from under the hood. i opened the hood and saw that a fire was burning on the starter and the nearby rubber hoses. i unsuccessfully tried to blow out the flames, which we put out using a fire extinguisher from our apartment building, which we were parked in front of. all damaged parts were replaced by the dealership service department, although there is still a burnt smell evident after driving the car. i informed honda of the problem through their new owner survey and a letter to their customer relations zone office. *ak
