Consequence SummaryIn certain circumstances, a deploying front passenger air bag can increase the risk of injury to an infant or small child.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the ods unit, free of charge. the recall began on january 16, 2006. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

On november 19th, 2007 i was coming home from work alone in my 2006 honda civic ex on a dirt road. i was not speeding and i was wearing my seatbelt. i chose a different route from my normal route and missed the s curve in the road. my car went to the ditch roughly 3 feet deep on the drivers side, hitting the drivers front, rolling the car one time, landing on the wheels and i put the brakes on, put the car in park and turned off the car. i then got out of the passenger side of the car because the driver side was smashed completely down not allowing me to get out of the car or the window. i could not find my cell phone and went and looked into the field and found where my car rolled and found the phone with the glass from my window. i then called 911 and waited for assistance. i was transported to sidney, ne where after a catscan they found that i had a broken neck in 2 places c6 and c7. they then transferred me by ambulance to fort collins, colorado where i had surgery to fuse the broken vertebrae. i am now out of work and out of a vehicle for now until i am healed. i called honda worried that none of the airbags went off, one of the reasons i bought this car was because of the safety rating because i wanted my family to be safe in any event of an accident. honda after i called them back 2 times finally told me that (case# n012007-11-2900916) honda does not design their airbags to go off in the event of a rollover. funny how when i did my research 1 out of 4 people are killed in a rollover. why wouldn't that be a safety concern?? so needless to say there is nothing done to fix the situation. *tr

I own a 2006 honda civic. this car is equipted with a complex weight sensor system which arms/disarms the passenger side air bags. when the car left the factory the system was defective. after one round of recall work, the system was still deffective. i do not beleive the company has any clear idea how to make this complex system function in a reliable manner. i want them to fix the system so that the air bags are armed all the time. honda refuses to allow this to be done. my passenger's safety is being compromised because they refuse to turn on the arir bags all the time.

I bought my 2006 honda civic ex coupe brand new in november 2005, problems started to occur shortly afterwards for instance the airbag light had a malfunction and recalled the dealer didn't fix it the first time, very inconvenient, brake pedal was fixed before i bought the vehicle, there was a recall on that as well because could fall off and cause a crash. i have taken it in to honda service to get problems fixed and numerous times, been told that its normal or some other ?!@#$% they always gave me the run around, the service people are rude, mean and incompetent and ignorant. i have taken my 06 civic in a total of 8-10 times now to fix problems they never fix anything! interior trim is poor/poor altering from the factory, panels loose and popping out interior scratches too easily/fragile cheaply made ?!@#$% (still), front drivers seat wont retract all the way back anymore like it used to (new) weather stripping is lifting up by front windshield (still) various rattles from interior (still), undercoating/under body spray from factory is peeling completely off (new) door panel flexes and rpms rise when using windows/now seems to roll up/down slower than before (still/new) keep in mind im only at 11,000 miles too! honda and toyotas quality is going downhill very fast especially with the civic, crv, rdx, mdx, camry, tundra, highlander, landcruiser, yaris, and rav4. the last year before the redesign of these vehicles the quality was great, now it seems like honda and toyota are either teaming up together or competing to see who can make the cheapest and ?!@#$% vehicle with cheaply made materials and taking shortcuts, changed a suppliers or something, these problems are unacceptable for a new vehicle. *tr

The car is a new honda civic lx with less than 650 miles on the odometer. when i am a passenger in the front seat, the airbag system warning indicator light comes on. we took it to the dealer at 400+ miles and was told it was caused by electronic instrument interference - possibly a cell phone. the fault code was cleared and the light went out. however, the problem remains - only when i am a passenger in the front seat the airbag warning light turns on. i am a 6'3 mail and weigh 300 lbs. smaller, lighter people do not seem to cause the warning light to register. i strongly suspect there is a manufacturing defect with an airbag sensor in the front passenger seat. i consider this a major safety defect. *jb

The side and side curtain airbags deployed in my 2006 honda civic ex coupe on the night of friday, january 9, 2009 when my fiancee shut the door. i was still inside, about to get out. it sounded like an m18 going off. i couldn't believe what had happened. my car was turned off, nonetheless! i called the dealership that i bought it from on monday morning (as the service department was closed on the weekend), and they were going to charge me a $95 diagnostic fee even though my car is still under 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. i brought it to another honda dealership, where is still sitting, because i am in a catch 22. honda claims there is nothing wrong with the airbag sensors; they are not defective. i filed an official complaint with honda america and they told me to consult my insurance. my insurance doesn't see how they can cover it. even with an attorney, a honda representative to the dealership says that honda will not pay for the repairs. apparently, they assume i am lying when there is clearly no physical evidence of an impact, and it is perfectly acceptable for airbags to deploy when car doors are tugged or slammed, even when the car is not running and keys are not in the ignition. it happens everyday! the technicians at the dealership contrived an absurd idea that my fiance and i must have been playing tug - of - war with the car door (me on the inside and he on the outside or vise versa). if that were the case, one of us would be battered and bruised. i arrive at my point. even if the door had been slammed, or been the obstacle in a game of tug of war, it is not acceptable for airbags to deploy spontaneously! if someone had been sitting in the passenger's seat when this happened, i can only imagine what would have happened. what if my future stepson or stepdaughter were in the seat? i am appalled and frustrated (to say the least) with honda's lack of responsibility and i will never purchase another honda again (and i have always owned one). *tr

We were driving through a new neighborhood that was still undeveloped. the passenger side impact airbags deployed when i hit a raised sewer drain with my foot on the brake. i would estimate approx. speed of 10mph. the side airbag deployed and hit my wife in her head and arm. she incurred a headache and bruise on her right arm. the incident filled the vehicle with the airbag dust and i immediately pulled over as my wife was screaming and crying in pain. i cannot understand why the passenger side airbag deployed at such a low rate of speed and with impact only to the underside of the vehicle, which caused damage to the inside of the car pillars and injury to my wife. *tr

The passenger side airbags in my 2006 honda civic coup deployed for no apparent reason. the initial inspection from the dealership, where purchased ,(honda of lise) or the eventual repair shop who was recommended by hartford insurance could find no reason for the deployment. the only comment from honda of america was that it was not a defect, no cause was given by any honda associate at any time. the repair shop (terry's in frankfort il), was very concerned because reloading the air bags was not an issue, but knowing whether the cause was resolved was an issue with them. they are a certified shop with hartford insurance. the vehicle had only 27,300 miles and was less than 3 years old. luckily the incident occurred at a very low rate of speed (5 - 10 mph), after pulling away from a stop sign. several week earlier we had driven from florida to chicago with no incidents. had this happened in a 70 mile per hour zone, what would have been the consequences? i have done some research on the internet and have seen the same issue with the same year and model. i have to ask if this had happened at 60 or 70 miles an hour - who would know what happened first - the air bag deployment or the accident? i have to admit, at that high of a speed - i don't know whether i would know for sure. when those air bags deploy, the noise is deafening, the car fills with gas and in my case - because my arm was on the arm rest, the back of the seat gives your arm a very painful whack. now what happens when it goes off on the drivers side at high speed??? i further question whether this has happened in the past, and people have lost their lives? who would be the wiser? a horrible accident where the air bags deployed, people were killed, but not in the suspected or assumed sequence. who would be left to answer the questions? i can honestly say that had this happened at interstate speeds that i may not know which happened first - the accident or the air bags. thanks. *tr

Approx in the month of december 2006 my airbag light came on. i brought the car to the dealer to inspect the defect. was notified everything was normal and when i left the dealer the light was no longer on. on july 21, 2007 the passenger side airbag deployed while closing the passenger door, the vehicle was not running. the curtain and seat both deployed. followed up with an appointment at pompano honda. service manager informed me it should be covered by american honda due to safety issues. the rep came into the dealer to inspect the vehicle and denied the claim. he said that the deployment was due to impact in on my bumper which previously happened a year prior to the deployment. i since then have had to pay $1500.00 to cover the repair. i feel as if this should have been covered through american honda as a safety issue defect. i am referring to you for possible assistance in reviewing this issue on my behalf. honda would not allow me access to my service file and photographs the rep took of my vehicle, which denied my claim. pompano honda told me the photographs were property of honda. i have taken pictures on the alleged bumper damage which they contend created the deployment. please contact me for further assistance. *tr
