Excessive rear wheel wear(inside on both tires) causing premature replacement and possible tire failure
08/02/2010
Rear tires wear prematurely and in a very odd fashion (uneven, hi-lo bands across the tread) causing a significant thumping sound and vibration. the first time i was told the rear shocks were the cause (@55-60k miles). the shocks and tires were replace and the same exact problem has occurred again! 90%+ of my driving is done on the highway and not poorly maintained back roads. it is very celar that there is an issue with the rear suspension on these vehicles that honda needs to be forced to acknowledge and address.

This vehicle was having a continuous roaring noise from the rear when the vehicle is being driven. took to proctor honda of tallahassee and mentioned the problem. honda dealer noticed the rear tires were beginning to cup and rotated tires to address sound issue and blamed the tires as the malfunctioning part by recommending a tire replacement. at that time the tire toyo spectrums were only 1 year and 9 months old having being installed on 3/2009 , had a 65k tread life warranty. the 2006 and 2007 models of honda civic had technical service bulletins issued regarding the rear upper control arms causing uneven wear of rear tires (cupping) service bulletin number : 08-001date of bulletin : feb 08, 2008 ,nhtsa item number : 10024687. this honda was purchased on 11/2007 and was obviously manufactured during the 2007 year. the proctor honda mechanics believe that the rear upper control arms have already been replaced on this vehicle but i have no documentation revealing a date any such work was done. i have contacted the previous dealer hennessy honda and the previous owner and neither have had these upper control arms replaced. now in may 2012 these tires that were rotated with the tires on the vehicle that were not cupping in 2010 are now severely cupped ( high /low areas) while the front tires are not cupped at all from my inspection. seems isolated to the rear of vehicle. the rear cupping occurs primarily on the inside part of the tire nearest to the vehicle but it is severe. this vehicle has already had the lower engine block replaced due to cracking coolant passages which i might emphasize that the 2007 honda civic also has issues with. this is my mom's vehicle and i want her to be safe driving this and do not want to keep buying new tires ( of a different brand) only to have them prematurely worn and cupping of tires caused as well. please investigate this issue ????

While driving home from work i noticed a slight wobble from the rear of the car. about a mile down the road i heard what sounded like a tire pop.what accually happened was my rear driver side lower control arm had snapped completly through, about 2 inches in from the bolt connecting it to the wheel assembly. honda has admitted to having a problem with their 06 and 07 model rear control arms not by issuing a recall but a service bulletin both in jan. and feb. of 2008. i believe there still was a problem in several 2008 models that were manufactured in 2007. i contacted american honda and the rep. there said they will not do anything about this problem. all the mechanics i have talked to have said it was a clean snap and that there was no rust involved.i think this problem deserves to be looked at closer than it seems to be.

At 78,000 miles i began to notice unusual road noise. ( humming) less than a year later i'm experiencing horrific road noise (peaks near 55 mph) and now unusual tire wear. tires are rotated, balanced and front end aligned regularly. i thought maybe bearing problems. local mechanic checked and said no. tire dealership thought the same, checked and said no. honda dealership said tires needed rotation to eliminate the problem. (did not help) back to tire dealership, they believe i need a kit for rear cam arms. noise so loud i sometimes use ear plugs to drown out sound/not safe. *tr

2 sets of tires wearing prematurely cupping vehicle maintained properly honda dealership said it was the tires and found no problem with the car tried to blame the tires turns out itis a suspension problem with the passenger control arm and is also due to the weight of the vehicle according to other complaints on line that sounc just like this car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the rear control arms have failed, which caused excessive tire wear. this conditions made the tires tilt inward. this also caused the vehicle to drift when driving. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not aligned the rear wheels to the correct specifications. the honda manufacturer stated that they would investigate the failure. he never received a response. the failure mileage was 11,800. the consumer stated honda california called and said they investigated and found there as no problem. the consumer asked why on the alignment report it stated that both rear wheels showed the negative camber outside of range that they allow. his response was that he didn't see a problem, but would put the consumer on record. the consumer contacted the dealership and was told they would investigate his complaint off the record. the consumer was offered 4 new tires, which does nothing to correct the problem of keeping the vehicle in a straight line on the highway. the consumer stated the vehicle needed an adjustable rear suspension arm to correct the problem, before the tires become worn out. updated 11/16/09 *jb updated 11/17/09 *bf updated 11/18/09. *jb

Rear tires worn out at 12,,000 miles with flat spots. the dealer said this was caused by not rotating tires at 10,000 miles. the dealer also claimed that the front end was out of alignment. i do not believe any of this. it looks like honda is telling everyone the same story. this started on 2006 honda civics and the problem still exists on my 2008 civic. everyone i talk to has had tire problems. can you help before someone gets killed? *tr

My daughter lisa adkins and i own a 2008 honda civic lx. i sent this to the dealer that worked on it and based on my own investigation there seems to be a serious production defect with some of those vehicles. my daughter lisa adkins took her/my 2008 honda civic lx to your service dept on memorial day. to say i'm mad is just not a good enough description of how i feel. the car had a loud knocking noise, high vibration and back tires basically wiped out. now you guys did provide service however little that was and false advice which is worse than none. 1) the service dept lied to my daughter about the problem which seems to be inherent in an unknown percentage of 2008 honda civics. i don't know why. maybe they came off the same assembly line with a bad frame alignment or what ever. i do not know but i am going to find out. 2) the service guy said the tires weren't covered by the warranty. that really bleeped out off. there is a production problem with that car and you guys know it, and tried to hide it from my daughter with

My 2008 honda civics lx, had my first tire rotation completed by my dealer and was told that all 4 tires were cupped. i have not owned the car a year. i purchased this car 05-31-08. i have less than 11,000 miles on this car. the car now vibrates and roars when driving down the street. the 2006-7 civics had problems with the rear suspension which caused the cupping damage to the tires. i have the same problem and the dealer said it was due to lack of rotation. they have serviced the car since owned and never said there was any problem with the tires. two weeks after my last service all tires are damaged and the car shakes when driving. it is very loud and feels unstable on the ground. the dealer has yet to take action to resolve this case. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact heard a loud clunking noise whenever she made a left turn. the noise grew louder and began to affect the vehicle when making right turns. the noise could be heard from both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. the dealer replaced the left front struts and upon leaving the dealer, the noise continued. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure; however, they called the manufacturer for further assistance. the manufacturer advised the contact to call a different dealer. the second dealer stated that the cv shaft needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 1,000 and current mileage was 13,510.

Front suspension steering there is a clonking or snapping sound when turning or making a u turn left. took it to the honda dealer and there was no cause for the noise. the dealer replaced the entire left front assembly; left drive shaft, cv joint, hub and bearings. then the dealer checked the rack and pinion and found that they were not torqued correctly and was reset to factory specs. well one year later the clonking and snapping sound slowly returned. and while making slow left turns. it happens on and off. now its passed warranty.

The front suspension on my car was not sufficiently lubricated from the factory, leading to popping and clicking (both very loud and noticeable) when turning. the dealer says the civics were not given sufficient lubrication and the suspension is not built correctly.

I was driving at about 65 mph when my car suddenly started swerving to my left. i pressed my brakes and i heard a little explosion, but i didn't think anything of it. my car started swerving even more and i was not able to do anything because it was out of my control. my car spun and hit another car and then spun again and ended up crashing into the left side divider. when police arrived at the scene, they noticed my wheel was popped out. the wheel malfunction must have caused the accident because the wheel popped out even before i hit the divider. *tr

My 2008 honda civic lx coupe has under 8000 miles and is experiencing a noticeable drift to the right. i had the vehicle serviced at a honda dealership and the alignment was corrected. the problem was resolved for a couple of weeks but has now surfaced again. the vehicle is pulling to the right and the steering wheel must be held to the left to compensate for the problem. the vehicle has not been involved in an accident or event that would have damaged any components. this appears to be a manufacturing defect. *tr

Rear suspension causes tires to prematurely wear out. after approximately 10,000 miles, i have to replace rear tires because of flat spots. the shop where i buy my tires will not even rotate my tires because of the flat spots. honda has done nothing to remedy the problem. the noise resulting from the flat spots is obnoxious and it is obviously a safety concern.

The rear tires have worn out at 12000 and again at 23000 miles. two different manufacturers of tires and all rotations and alignments were accomplished on schedule. tire manufacturers will not accept responsibility and honda has stated that they are not responsible for tire failures. there are many more people listed on various internet auto problem sites that have encountered exactly the same problem as i have with the same make and model vehicle. the wheel alignment shops that i have contacted insist that there is a problem with the suspension of this vehicle and weight distribution (heavy in front, light in rear) compounds the problem.
03/16/201120000
There is a well documented defect in the honda civic between years of 2006-2009 for the rear upper arm suspension. there still is a defect in the geometry by .75 degrees and is the reason for early tire wearing. all four of my tires started to wear earlier than usage performed on tire. around 20,000 miles there was early excessive wear noted. i couldn't figure out why there was so much wear on my tires. i had to replace them at 30-34000 miles and believe it is due to the defect in the rear upper arms. i am concerned that this is safety issue and someone needs to look into this and demand honda to make a recall for this. many consumers are complaining about this issue and class action suits have been filed. despite the replacement arm, there still are documents that state excessive tire wear and replacement.

Ever since i bought my 2008 honda civic sedan ex-l i have had a vibration, tire cupping and sever noise in the rear end suspension and wheels. honda claims it is because of improper tire rotation intervals. tire cupping is not due to improper tire rotation. it is due to lack of proper shock absorbing. i have had my civic back for this problem every 10,000 miles with no solution from honda. at 26000 miles i replaced the rear tires because they were badly cupped. now my new tires are cupped as well. after repeated wheel balancings, alignmnets and many attempts to have honda fix it i replaced the rear shocks with heavey duty shock to no avail. the last car i owned that showed signs of rear tire cupping was my 1970 fiat 850 racer. i replaced the rear production shocks with koni adjustible shocks and the cupping ceased. again honda refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem. there is defintely a problem and needs a remedy.

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. while the contact was driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle began to fishtail, as a result of rear suspension failure. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician stated that the vehicle was within the alignment requirements and the failure was due to a design flaw. the failure mileage was unavailable. the current mileage was 30,000. the vin was not available.

2008 civic ex coupe. had to replace both rear tires at around 20,000 miles due to a slightly visible flat spot on the tires that was causing a progressively loud roar. on initial inspection, the tire dealer advised me the tires looked fine as they still had plenty of tread and appeared to be even wear. however, on closer examination i was able to point out the flat spots visible on the center of the tire. tire dealer could not explain cause. when i had replaced the second rear tire, the tire dealer thought that the belting had slipped. i just assumed i had a bad set of tires. the wear did not look like typical damage caused by misalignment. the same problems has again appeared with about 25,000 miles on the new rear tires. i now have discovered that honda has service bulletin 08-001 which describes my exact symptom and requires the upper control arm to be replaced.. honda has not issued a recall on this. honda should notify owners and tire dealers of this possible failure so consumers are aware on how to correct the problem. besides, the extremely loud noise that eventually appears, the vibration will ultimately lead to complete tire failure. *tr

Purchased a 2008 honda civic from local dealer new. this vehicle had alot of road noise for the get go..but saw online that road noise was one of the problems with honda's. had my car regularly serviced at the same dealership over the last year. last month dec 2009 road noise became excessive and took car into dealership. they looked the car over and said tires had excessive wear because i had not rotated them every 5000 miles. car is a year old has 20000 miles and has had road noise all along. dealer refused to replace tires and denied problem. car now has nearly 30,000 miles and is undrivable at this point. haven't replaced tires as it is not affordable. but car is unsafe to drive. dealer said suspension problems noted in 2006-07 models has been fixed, but problem seems rampant in the 2008 if you look on the internet as well as safety reports yet nothing has been recalled, and honda is not standing by their product. now i am still paying for a car that sits in the driveway and is unsafe to drive...cant sell an unsafe vehicle..please investigate this problem. *tr

Although have had tires rotated and balanced at 10,000. at 13,000 noticed tire noise and discovered cupping and uneven wear on rear tires. honda dealer in lancaster, pa said could do nothing, not even check alignment unless i paid. i had alignment checked at another garage. all is within specs. he said a lot of the civics have this problem. he put the best 2 tires on front. i inflate my tires to 36 lbs so that tires ride on center and make less noise. present mileage 18,000. *tr

Purchased 2008 civic in may 2008 and have had regular service done at dealer. tires worn unevenly and some cupping of rear tires occurred. noticed at last service appointment. car had 29,700 miles at that time. since tires were rotated at that time i have noticed aggravating road noise and steering wheel vibration. dealer balanced tires which seemed to help for a little while, but did not cure the problem. *tr

I have a 2008 honda civic coupe at approximately 18,000 miles rear-end noise started, at 20,000 miles it became unbearable. the car was taken to battle creek honda and they told us the rear tires were cupped and the rear wheels were out of alignment. had to align the car and replace tires with 20,000 miles. the car also handles very poorly in snow and wet road conditions. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. while driving at various speeds ranging from 35 to 65 mph, he noticed a vibration in the rear end of the vehicle. the dealer stated that the vibration was due to a negative camber. the current mileage was 13000 and the failure mileage was 5500.

A roaring noise from the rear tires started while on a road trip. when i got home, i took the car to the dealership to have it looked at. before i went in, i had done quite a bit of research about this problem so i was pretty sure it was the control arm defect that many other people are having. i told the people in the service department about service bulletin 08-001 which says that 06-07 civics have defective control arms. as expected, they told me that the rear tires were cupped and that i needed an alignment which is not covered under the warranty. first off, honda does not do anything about the service bulletin unless you print it out and give it to them. they know it is a safety issue but wont do anything about it until they get sued because someone loses control of their car and gets hurt. *tr

I have a 2008 honda civic 4 door. has the exact same problems as the 2006 and 2008 civics. less than 20,000 miles on tires and car. rear tires are demolished! tires have excessive wear and road noise. dealer says that i should rotate the tires more often. this is not wear from failure to rotate this is due to the suspension. this is an outrage that the same problems that happened over a year ago and the have failed to fix them.

*tr

2008 honda civic, rear end making horrible sound. realize after looking online that honda has issues with rear arm controls. took car to dealer, they stated that my car has the c stamp updated rear arm controls. rear tires severely cupped. they recommend 4 wheel alignment and purchase of two new tires. even though this appears to be same problem that others have had they will not replace arm controls and had to pay out of pocket for repair replacement. *tr

Noise in the rear end of my car and a vibration in the rear end, the tire wear cupped by a bad camber that has no adjustment made this way by honda. they say they set the camber now and i had to pay for the alignment and tires. honda knows they have this problem and i called they are doing nothing to help the people that bought their car. *tr

I bought my honda civic exl in march of 2008. after 9 months (approx 18 k miles) of use i am finding i have to replace my tires due to unusual wear. i took the car to a tire dealership who told me that there was no warranty except defects for oem tires on this car and directed me back to the dealership where i purchased the car. i had the tire place rotate and rebalance the tires

Uneven and unusual tread wear on the inside part of the rear tires. this causes the vehicle to handle erratically at times. this condition appears to have started several months ago and has gotten worse. this vehicle has received regularly scheduled service. there is a service bulletin 08-001 dated 02/08 on 2006 civic model. has this model changed over the past two years? these models appear pretty much identical. *tr

At 13000 miles my rear tires on a 4 month old car were so worn , (flat spots) that in the near future i feel they would be a future road hazard possibly causing an accident or death. in my little bit of research on internet this is a on going problem for years. dealer replaced my back tires after several trips to different repair, tire shops. even when some shops put it in writing that excessive wear was due to mechanical failure they still said nothing wrong with car. i have a feeling i'll be back to dealer before 5000 mi more for same thing. this is truly and unsafe situation for people when if they listen to dealer and they tell them nothings wrong when clearly something is causing the uneven wear. *tr

I had my tires rotated according to schedule. i left the dealer and immediately heard a very loud roaring sound from my tires. i returned to the dealer and was told the tires were not wearing evening. my vehicle only had 12,000 miles. i was later told that other honda civics had a control arm problem which caused the same problem but was told my vehicle was not included in this service bulletin. however, my vehicle is displaying the very same symptoms. *tr
