Multiple failures of the continous variable transmission dealership just changes transmission fluid until now, since vehicle is out of warranty they now recommend a transmission replacement. american honda motor will not cover the repairs.

2005 honda civic hybrid began juddering when taking off from a stop. the transmission also began slipping. honda has acknowledged problem with the cvt transmission and extended the warranty to 105,000 miles or 7 years. however, they initially insist on attempting to fix the problem with a procedure called burnishing. this procedure takes care of the problem temporarily, but juddering and slipping eventually comes back. this is not a permanent fix. the starter clutch needs to be replaced, a more extensive and expensive repair, but the only repair that fixes the problem for good. honda has a known defect, and they have used a band-aid approach to the repair; forcing customers to burnish the transmission before they will replace the starter clutch. customers have been forced out of the warranty period by burnishing and then having to wait for the problem to re-occur. safety is an issue here as the transmission slips and hesitates when trying to pull out in traffic.

Transmission is juddering when accelerating from a stop. i'm only 10,000 miles over the 105,000 extended transmission warranty (they know the transmissions are broken), and i have an extremely extensive service record with the dealer. they refuse to work with me on the issue. a recall should be issued on the cvt transmission and starter clutch, and the warranty should be extended to 200,000 miles.

When accelerating quickly from a stop, the car makes a huge grinding noise--heard mostly in the front end. when accelerating slowly, no noise is heard. the car also slips horribly on wet or slippery pavement when accelerating from a stop. i have had the dealer say this is a normal sound when it failed when they tested it (i have recorded this in my files at the dealer when it was under warantee) and also when i brought it to an independant garage. they found nothing wrong with any of the front end parts and diagnosed it as an internal problem that they couldn't find or fix.
POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

While accelerating moderately, often while trying to pass another vehicle on the freeway or even while trying to maintain speed up a hill, our 2005 honda civic hybrid would slip out of gear and the engine would suddenly rev up to redline rpm (it is an automatic transmission). the service technician could not reproduce this event. after a few months, this started happening quite often -- every day in predictable locations on our driving route. in addition, a judder developed when starting from a stop. this latter issue was identified by honda and a technical bulletin was put out. the judder made the car nearly undrivable, so we again took the car in. the transmission fluid was replaced and the clutch plates were burnished. the tranmission slippage and engine revving disappeared. now, 5 months later, the transmission slip with engine revving has returned as well as the judder starting again. we purchased an extended warranty, so the cost has not been an issue so far, however our warranty expires in june 2010. we are mainly concerned with the repeated appearance of the problems, especially that the transmission slip/engine revving can be a safety issue when trying to accelerate on an on-ramp or pass a car on a two-lane road. if the engine slips out of gear while passing a car, it may have tragic results.

Honda recall for judder in cvt on 2005 hybrid. repaired (i believe by burnishing the clutch?); however, condition is recurring, gradually getting worse. i have heard many other complaints of the same problem in other cvts. my sons recently had the same repair done to his. *tr
