Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles, certain parts of the integrated motor assist (ima) system are located under a metal cover behind the rear seat-back. over time the weight of rear seat passengers may cause the metal cover to come into contact with a rubber cap covering an electrical terminal. the rubber cap may get pinched, exposing the electrical terminal.
Consequence SummaryThe terminal may come into contact with the metal cover, which can result in an electrical short that may blow the ima fuse. a blown fuse will cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a plastic cover attached to a metal bracket over the rubber cap. the recall began on february 26, 2006. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

I'm a honda civic hybrid owner (2006). i have not reported the lack of acceleration to my dealer, assuming that was the low power of the car due to the hybrid nature. the lack of acceleration at times when it's needed has put me in unsafe situations. additionally, my hybrid does not consistently auto stop as designed.

I would very much like to share my concerns over the safety of the 2006 honda civic hybrid that we purchased new from a dealer. the car performed well for a few years, until honda decided to tell me to go to the dealer and upgrade the software controlling the hybrid motor-battery system. immediately following the software update, the car was utterly devoid of power, and dangerous to drive when merging on the freeway, even when driving alone without other weight in the car. if i drive my two young children with me, it's very scary as the car must be absolutely floored the entire time while merging. no doubt this is strongly affecting the fuel economy of the car as well, as it gets only in the mid 30s, when originally advertised much higher. also, i can't imagine anyone ever buying this car with the pathetic level of power it exhibits, therefore the resale value is now next to nothing. i would be happy to have a software downgrade and get back to original performance, but honda tells me this is not possible for whatever reason. i urge you to begin or continue an investigation concerning the detrimental safety impacts of the 2006 honda civic hybrid software update. **03/01/2012 update bf

Bought this car new. i won't even go into the ridiculous 49/51 mpg window sticker that is a blatant lie but that does play into my complaint as you will see. honda, after receiving complaints about the battery pack and having problems with it, has this brainstorm to reflash or reprogram the computer/battery pack as part of a recall this past year. this was done at my last oil change. prior to that time my sole complaint with my car was that the mpg averaged about 35mpg period. since this last recall and reprogram not only has my fuel economy gone down but the performance of the car is essentially unsafe from a stopped position. let's face it, the car never was a nascar but on the other side of the coin it was not a golf car either. now when starting out from a stopped position, whether at a stop light or anywhere and whether the motor has shut off or not, the hybrid is so bogged down that i honestly believe my golf car accelerates better and more quickly. let's set this straight too. i'm 41 and not trying to drag race i'm merely trying to drive the car in a normal safe manner. at times it feels like the car is going to literally die in the middle of a turn or intersection which can be a bad thing once you commit to a turn and there's a 53 foot 100,000lbs of fun coming in your direction. honda has gotten away with ignoring my complaints about the hydroplaning of this vehicle, the ridiculously low fuel economy, and now they will likely do the same with their attempt at making their battery last longer which has made the vehicle less safe for me and my wife and kids. this recall was nothing more than a battery life extender to protect honda's wallet. how about replacing everyone's battery once for the life of the car? that'd make sense to me...you know...the guy that shelled out 24,000.00 for your car expecting to receive mid to upper 40's in fuel economy. fix it

After my 2006 honda civic hybrid received an integrated motor assist (ima) software upgrade in 2010, if the car is parked for one day (such as a sunday, if i do not drive the car) the ima battery will drain within one half mile of leaving my home the next day, on a level roadway, even if the ventilation system and radio are off to reduce electrical load. fuel economy also dropped about 10 mpg after the software upgrade. without ima, the car has slow freeway acceleration, especially when traveling uphill. the honda dealer says they cannot do anything because the ima system light does not illuminate (obd does not show a fault) although the dealer can reproduce the problem after keeping the car overnight. how do you know the ima software upgrade does not prevent the ima light from illuminating when there is an ima battery fault, therefore not requiring honda to replace the ima batteries under warranty?

Car stopped at stop sign at the top of a very steep hill. car would not accelerate and car behind me almost hit me. this is the third time it happened, both times were after the august 2010 ima recall by honda. honda dealer said that there is no solution from honda ever since the first incident. i hope that you can urge honda to fix this problem before an accident occurs. this is a very dangerous situation in san francisco with its many steep hills and impatient drivers.

The car loses power upon acceleration and going up a hill from a complete standstill. the car at times can not climb up a hill. this causes a safety issue. i have discussed this honda and i was told that given that there was not a computer record in the memory there was not a problem. on the freeway the engine revs upon acceleration without any increase in speed. i think the battery electrical assist system is defective and needs to be replaced, honda added a computer patch to the car that slowed down the electric engine assist and comprimised the power and acceleration.

Since i have gotten the ima battery upgrade the car battery completely discharges randomly several times a day. when the battery discharges the car looses a significant amount of its acceleration. i have had three incidents since this upgrade where i have nearly had accidents due to this problem. once while turning onto a busy street on a hill the battery discharged and i lost the acceleration and the oncoming car almost hit me. i had a similar experience on the highway when i pulled into the fast lane to pass a car and i lost pick up and the car far behind quickly caught up and had to slam on their breaks. the third episode is when i came to a complete stop on a very steep hill. when i went to drive forward again the battery discharged and despite being in the drive gear and despite pushing the gas pedal to the floor i kept rolling backwards. i ended up rolling backwards downhill and turned into someone's driveway and turned around. i drove around until the battery recharged and then was eventually able to drive up the hill. when i brought these concerns up with my local honda dealership they agreed this did not sound normal. after they test drove it and ran tests they did not find a problem so they called honda central. they were told that it is normal for the battery to discharge randomly through out the day since the upgrade. when i asked how do i drive safely they said i should be careful about the battery discharging and subsequent loss of acceleration.

2006 honda civic hybrid (30,000 miles) has loud rattle noise going over bumps. noise was diagnosed as engine mount cavitation by honda engineer. dealer tried repair recommended by honda engineer consisting of placing o-rings between engine and mount. this eliminated the noise. 1000 miles later the right engine mount broke and engine dropped in frame. dealer replaced right engine mount per tsb but noise still exists and now honda is stating that the noise is a characteristic of the vehicle and refuses to repair. the noise was not present in the first twenty thousand miles of driving. the noise is now a very serious concern of another imminent engine mount failure. if this occurs at high speed and engine again drops in frame, control of the vehicle could be lost.

I have a honda civic hybrid 2006, last days i have my ima light and check engine light come up, i went o the dealer o'hare honda and they refused me to do the a recall update to the software and fix my check engine light and ima light that is related to the electric engine with battery. i will mention that the warranty book says that they need to fix these issues under a federal law 8/80k but they treat me bad and not even open to discuss. when i asked to talk with somebody else they old that no manager was friday at 12 pm. i mention that my warranty was canceled and car mileage is 78.000, i don't feel comfortable to drive this car is losses power and is dangerous when you try to pass another car or an intersection with these issues.

2006 honda civic hybrid -- this vehicle relies on battery assistnace for an additional 20+ horsepower but is now severely compromised by battery degredation that honda is trying to cover up with a software update that only decreases vehicle's dependence on the battery thus ensures less horsepower than advertised. the car has become very dangerous due to the inability to rely on it responding appropriately when the accelerator is pressed, sudden losses of power, dying battery, and more.
08/22/2010
I have on '06 civic hybrid and the battery is getting progressively worse. it crashes often where one second it shows more than 1/2 charge, and the next the acceleration and power is significantly reduce and the charge level drops to zero. not good when you are attempting to accelerate into traffic. honda has issued a notice to update the software that basically compromise safety, power and fuel economy so honda can get you through the warranty period without having to replace your battery. i fear that the unexpected loss of acceleration and power is unsafe, and that the software update that claims to fix the problem is simply an attempt by honda to extend the life of a faulty battery beyond the warranty period.

Honda civic hybrid--2006. ima assist abnormalities following most recent honda repair campaign. my 2006 civic hybrid was given a software update by honda on 8/5/2010 following a campaign initiated by honda to address loss of power and performance due to ima hybrid battery deterioration and failure. prior to the update the vehicle would often lose battery charge suddenly, resulting in a significant loss of power and at one point stranding me in an intersection while turning left in front of oncoming traffic in july, 2010. the most recent update (i have had several from honda in over the 4.25 yrs of ownership) has not fixed the issue of sudden loss of power from transient battery failures that occur without warning, often when accelerating up steep inclines or attempting to merge into traffic. in addition to the ongoing issues, the hybrid battery now fails to provide adequate assistance when accelerating, merging into high-speed traffic, etc. and experiences wide fluctuations in charge, jumping from 1/3 charge to completely full with sudden drops of a similar fashion. these fluctuations continue to occur regardless of driving conditions, ambient temperature, accessory or a/c use or other extenuating factors and occur multiple times per week, and multiple times per day on occasion (6 battery failures in the last week alone since the update). i have experienced at least 1 near-miss accident in the last 30 days due to sudden loss of power and honda's multiple attempts to address the failures from a software perspective have been unsuccessful.

My 2006 honda civic hybrid engine blew up a week ago - feb. 11 2008. without indication, the engine stopped running. it is passed factory warranty which is 60k miles of 5 years. the car has 78k miles on it and it was well maintained. the original owner was a rental co and they maintained it well. it was bought by a broker who performed normal maintenance on it - oil change, air filter, brakes, transmission fluid and new battery before selling it to me. i performed regular maintenance as well. i took it to the nearest honda dealer after it broke and they said they could not conclude what caused it, but the result was 4 broken spark plugs and a cracked no. 2 piston. honda of america opened a case and closed it because 1. it was used, 2. expired warranty and 3. it was not maintained at a honda dealership. *tr

Last year i had to have the catalytic converter replaced due to failure and at that time i informed the honda dealer service technician hat the rpm's on the car were staying high even when the car was idle. the service tech said they checked the vehicle and could not replicate the issue and said they found nothing wrong with it. now here we are 16000 miles later and i have a transmission failure. the car makes a clicking noise while in gear no other symptoms at this point. i have taken it to the dealer and they are aware of the failure, but are only willing to help me with 25% of the bill because i performed my own transmission fluid change and the warranty is up. this is the third problem i have had with the car in the three years i have had it. *tr

After about 50,000 driving miles, beginning in august 2008, the ima (integrated motor assist) electric assist motor in my 2006 honda civic hybrid has been acting erratically. since that time, the ima battery that powers the assist motor has been unpredictable. it sometimes would fully discharge, and the car would run only on the underpowered 1.3 l gas engine. the car is very sluggish, causing safety issues when acceleration is needed in city or interstate driving. i have spoken to both dealerships in town whom both ?duplicated? my issue but were unaware of how to fix it. i have stayed in contact with american honda directly since august and today was reinforced the idea that my car has absolutely no problems whatsoever and is working within normal circumstances and my battery tests fine. i explained to him that a battery can test sporadically based on various reasons. he refused to give me any other explanation, contact information, supervisor information, etc. i am very concerned that the problem will cause an accident when acceleration is needed and the ima will not work properly. the car when unassisted properly by the electric power motor only produces sub-100 horsepower and does not properly accelerate when needed, especially in situations such a merging onto a highway or making right hand turns. *tr

2006 honda civic hybrid during hot weather the air conditioning was operated on the coldest setting, this caused the high voltage battery to loose charge .when i went to accelerate into traffic the car lost power and had trouble getting up to speed (i was almost hit by another car coming up in the lane) the car was taken into the dealer on 7/17, 8/14, 8/18, 8/27, 9/9 through 9/30/08 during which time no problems were found with the car. on 9/30/08 i took a test drive with the technician and within 5 minutes he was able to duplicate the failure. upon returning to the dealer his manager told him not to document his findings because honda, although aware of the problem, did not know how to fix it. because they would not fix the problem and because i could not sell the car with this problem to someone else i traded the car in. i later found the car on the used car lot for sale. *tr

In the past you did a recall for the 2006 honda civic hybrid regarding a battery connector which you state may cause the motor to fail and cause a crash. at the moment i am uploading a video to you tube under user 10p6 regarding a problem which causes not only the ima motor to fail, but the regenerative braking, brakes, abs steering, and even the airbags. even then it can cause the lights to fail and vehicle to roll when in park. i have provided honda (corporate and south tacoma honda) with videos in the past but they refuse to do anything stating the vehicle is fine. it is not! it is deadly! please investigate urgently. i am posting this on the net so people can see the dangers which honda hides; soon i will tell them the one simple problem which may kill them. *tr

While driving at highway speeds, my cars instrument panel went blank, all gauges went out. this is an electronic panel. in addition, the cars engine lost all power. i had to coast to the side of the road. there was no indication that the car was running. it is a hybrid and it felt like it was in the auto stop mode when you are at a light, the engine was not running (at least you could not tell it was running). i turned the cars ignition off and then restarted the car. it started up again and the gauges were working and i was able to continue driving. i brought the car to the dealer and explained the symptoms. they checked the computer for error codes and found none. they were not able to find anything wrong. this is a safety hazard since the car is not drivable when this occurs. i expressed my concerned to the service manager and he stated that there were to many computers and wires for then to check them all and we would have to wait until it happened again. this occurred one other time while the car was in the drive way during the winter idling. when we got in the car after a few minutes, we noticed that all gauges were out. again, turning the ignition off and restarting the car cleared the problem. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated when going up a steep hill, the vehicle lost power. the contact put the vehicle into reverse in order to get enough speed to make it back up the hill. if the vehicle went less than 20 mph, the vehicle lost power. this happened intermittently. the dealership could not duplicate the problem.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM

 1. according to the mechanic, a random road pebble put a hole in our car's air conditioner condenser unit. 2. the air conditioning unit does not work; 3. the dealer says the damage is not covered under warranty and will cost $800 to replace the condenser. we have not replaced the unit as we feel this is a design flaw that should be covered by the car manufacturer. based on our research, this is a widespread problem among honda vehicles. *tr
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE

I have a 2006 honda civic hybrid which is experiencing ima system problems. according to honda, everything is fine, but the battery won't hold much charge. in addidtion, honda installed a software update to the car's computer that changes the way the engine is managed, using the ima system less and not allowing the battery charge to go below 1/2 charge. as a result, the ima system will only work (randomly) about half the time the car is running. so engine power will not be available at crucial times, i.e. accelerating, pulling out at an intersection, etc. this makes the car unpredictable and unsafe. there are many honda civic hybrid owners who are experiencing this same problem (as witnessed through online forums) and have received the same response from honda, 'everything is operating normally'. well, it's not.

The ima system on the 2006 honda civic hybrid is slowly disintegrating. the fuel economy has plummeted and the battery crashes intermittently rendering the car a highway menace. i doubt that driving the car without the ima is legal in any state. it is a recipe for death and disaster. i urge a complete investigation into american honda who won't even admit that there is a problem. if that were the case, they would not have developed pcms (computer patches ) in an attempt to deal with this issue. *tr

During warmer times of the year (60-90 f), my 2006 honda civic hybrid will suddenly lose 75-100% of the charge in the high-voltage hybrid ima battery without warning. the ima hybrid system then fails to function and leaves the vehicle dependent upon the internal combustion engine entirely for propulsion. while the battery does have safeguards built in to protect it during extremely high temperatures, in my personal experience, i have had the high voltage battery temporarily fail at temperatures as low as 60 degrees f, while garaged at my home or parked in a shaded, lower space in a parking deck. during colder periods, the problem appears intermittently at most. the vehicle must then recharge the high voltage battery, which can take varying amounts of time from several minutes to over a half hour. the ima hybrid system will function on a limited level when the hybrid battery is partially charged, though obtaining full function of the ima system following a crash can be a prolonged experience. this is a safety concern because the civic hybrid is markedly slower without the assistance of the electric motor, creating a hazard in adverse traffic conditions, such as when attempting to turn left across traffic. i have experienced at least 1 near miss when the electric assist failed without warning while attempting such a turn. currently, honda has not issued any tsbs or recalls regarding the issue. *tr

After about 16 months of owning the car, beginning in october 2007, the ima (integrated motor assist) electric assist motor in my 2006 honda civic hybrid has been acting erratically. an warning light came on due to ima problems, and some components of the ima computer and control system were replaced (i am not sure if any of the old parts are still available). since that time, the ima battery that powers the assist motor has been unpredictable. it sometimes would fully discharge, and the car would run only on the underpowered 1.3 l gas engine. the car is very sluggish, causing safety issues when acceleration is needed in city or interstate driving. the problem is worse in warmer weather, 85 degrees or higher. since the problem first was observed in early october 2007, some parts and components have been replaced by the dealership. on october 29, 2007 they replaced the mcm relay and the battery control unit. around july 9, 2008 the original ima battery was replaced with a new experimental ima battery. on september 5, 2008 the oxygen sensor was replaced at the suggestion of another civic hybrid owner who thought that replacing the sensor on his civic had helped some of the erratic behavior. however the service manager of the dealership admitted to me that american honda cannot fix the problems that my car has. he tells me that the problems are due to a change in programming of the software that controls the ima, a problem that started with the software updates installed on my car in october, 2007. he says that honda is working on a new software update to address the problems, but no one has an idea of when it will be available. the only suggestion that was given to me was when you run the air conditioning, direct the vents upwards toward the ceiling to send the cold air back toward the ima battery. i am very concerned that the problem will cause an accident when acceleration is needed and the ima will not work properly. *tr

 1. intermittent problem with the autostop feature. when slowing to a stop, autostop engages as designed but when the car comes to a complete stop, the car shutters and the autostop disengages. 2. when driving 20 mph and below, car will frequently jerk and/or rpms will jump to 2000 and remain there until acceleration or braking. *tr
