11V260000HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.) V (Vehicle)2430MFRHONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)04/27/201104/29/2011
Defect SummaryHonda is recalling certain model year 2001-2002 honda accord, and civic 2-door and 4-door, model year 2002-2003 cr-v, model year 2002 odyssey, model year 2003 acura cl, and model year 2002-2003 acura tl vehicles. this recall is related to a series of recalls on these vehicles in which honda is replacing the inflators within the driver's side air bag to address a defective condition. this recall addresses approximately 2,430 air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts in the event, for one example, a covered vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the driver's air bag, and the replacement air bag installed was one that may have contained a defective inflator.
Consequence SummaryIn the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, the inflator could produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to rupture with metal fragments striking and injuring the driver or other occupants.
Corrective SummaryOwners of all vehicles on which a replacement service air bag may have been installed will be notified. dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin on or about june 27, 2011. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009. this safety recall campaign is related to recalls 08v-593, 09v-259, and 10v-041.

The srs light (airbag sensor) continued to stay lit on my dashboard while driving. i took it to my honda dealer (west hills honda in bremerton, wa) where they informed me they found a code 7-2 in the system, indicating there was an srs control unit failure. essentially, the electrical unit that would deploy the airbags had failed, which meant i no longer had the potential use of my vehicles airbags in case of an accident. the cost for a new part was $659.95, labor an additional $100.00, which meant a bill close to $800.00 with tax. far beyond my retirement income to handle. it would seem to me this is a safety related issue, similar to a seat belt problem (which honda would take care of for free). this srs control unit rarely fails, they told me. it certainly was not due to my negligence or lack of attention to proper maintenance. it would seem to me that since this is a potential safety issue, and was not caused by negligence by the owner of the vehicle, this should be covered by honda. otherwise, myself and my family are at risk driving this vehicle. i could certainly use your help in convincing honda to replace this faulty unit. thank you for your assistance with this matter.

I was involved in two separate accidents involving animals and the airbags did not deploy. november 2009 a head on deer collision at 70 miles per hour. vehicle had over $5000 worth of damage. december 2010 a turkey was hit head on in flight at 60 miles per hour with no airbag deployment. we felt that the airbags should have deployed and are very concerned with safety in a more serious non-giving collision.

I was hit head-on by a mid-sized sedan which drilled my license plate back to the firewall. the driver's side airbag failed to deploy, despite the speed (me 45, her 20) and the driver's shoulder harness failed to restrain me. i crushed the steering column with my chest and had to be removed with the jaws of life. honda sent a technician who declared a faulty seatbelt and faulty airbag sensor. the vehicle sustained over $15,000 damage, was fully repaired, although my insurance paid for it, not honda. i sustained multiple soft-tissue injuries, broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. i continue with therapy almost three years later. *nm

I was involved in a 5 car accident in which my 2003 honda crv ex was rear-ended at 60 mph, i was pushed into another vehicle and sustained both front and rear damage totaling over $12,000. my airbag failed to deploy. i am now in physical therapy three times a week for a back injury that occurred upon impact. i also missed a week of work due to my injury. my vehicle has been in the process of being repaired for 3 weeks. it is currently at a dealership and i was told that my seat belt is locked and needs to be replaced and there is a problem with the srs safety system including my airbags. i was in complete shock that such an impact would not deploy the airbags and now i understand why. apparently the dearlership at lia honda in enfield, ct that is doing the safety check were also surprised the airbags did not deploy. i believe i would have walked away without injury if my safety features on my vehicle worked properly. *jb

I was hit by a vehicle in november 2003 (while waiting at a traffic light) that was hit by a car that ran a red light which caused $10,000.00 damage to the front of my car. in the accident my right arm was injured and eventually was operated on. the airbag in my car did not deploy even though the car was hit squarely in the front at a high rate of speed and i think the airbag unit is defective.
