Defect SummaryHonda is recalling model year 2007-2008 honda fit vehicles. due to an error during installation of the wiring harness for the combination switch that controls low head beam function, the wires for the lower beam circuit were pulled tighter than intended. after repeated use of the headlight switch, the electrical connector terminal for the low beam headlight circuit can become worn as a result of this tension, which can result in low conductivity and cause an accumulation of copper oxide in the area of the contacts.
Consequence SummaryThe low beam headlights can become inoperative decreasing the driver's visibility as well as the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the low beam terminal and perform necessary repairs free of charge. the safety recall began on january 24, 2011. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.
NotesHonda's safety recall no. r58.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

In their defect information report (dir) of december 15, 2010, american honda motor company, inc. (honda) notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall of model year 2007 and 2008 honda fit vehicles to repair the headlights.the recall will remedy a defect in the low beam headlight circuit that can cause a total outage of the low beam headlights.honda's dir states: due to a variation in the assembly sequence when installing the wiring harness for the combination switch that controls the headlights, the wires for the low beam headlight circuit can be pulled tighter than the wiring for the other functions controlled by the combination switch.after repeated use of the headlight switch, the electrical connector terminal for the low beam headlight circuit can become worn as a result of this tension, which can result in low conductivity and cause an accumulation of copper oxide in the area of the contacts.in some cases the poor conductivity may cause the terminal ends to melt within the wiring harness connector.if this occurs, the low beam headlights can become inoperative, increasing the risk of a crash. honda dealer's will inspect the combination switch and wiring harness and remedy the defect free of charge.please see safety recall file 10v624 for recall details

I was driving alone on rte. 528 approx 11:30pm, and had been driving at 70mph for 30 minutes, when a tow truck appeared on the side of an unlit hwy. i turned on my left turn signal to change lanes and stay away from the tow truck which was located on the shoulder. as i changed lanes, i noticed that for a second or two my headlights went completely out and then turned back on. i continued on my way but approximately ten minutes later my headlights went out again and this time they stayed out. i was immediately thrust into total darkness. i could not see anything. i did not know if i was on the road or not. as i slowed down and braked, i could not even see where the road was or where the shoulder was to pull off on. total blackness with zero visibility. i thought i might be killed right there as i could see nothing and there were no street lights. near panic, i jiggled the turn signal lever and the headlights snapped back on. i proceeded home, a five minute more drive, with no further incident. i recall that approx. five months ago my tail lights went out and a fuse was replaced at the dealership. the repair person suggested that i may have been hit by lightening. this time, i went to the dealership and the service person was able to reproduce the headlight failure through testing. a new switch was ordered but it appears that the switch may have also caused the tail lights to go out rather than lightening. the dealer says that no other cases such as mine have been documented, as yet. i reported the issue to honda and a case number was recorded. i am documenting this incident because i truly believe that, if it is a faulty headlight switch, then others should be notified as i easily could have been killed as i was immediately plunged into total darkness on a completely deserted pitch black road.

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 honda fit. the contact stated that the front passenger side low beam headlight malfunctioned. the bulb had been replaced numerous times and the failure recurred. the contact received a recall notice for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 10v624000 (exterior lighting:headlights:high/low beam dimmer switch ) and the vehicle was repaired. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the current lowbeam failure. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 92,000. sm.

Up to now, this car never exhibited a problem with low beam failure. the car was brought to the dealer for the recall correction for high/low beam switch when the recall was announced. on thursday night, march 15, 2012 low beams failed to come on after repeated attempts. used high beams to drive home. brought vehicle in to dealer friday morning. they could not replicate the failure, checked systems, found nothing malfunctioning. while driving saturday night, low beams initially worked during steady use for an hour. after entering a dark road, i switched to high beams, and when i went to switch back to low beams for oncoming car, they failed. used high beams to drive last 8 miles home. using high beams is not as hazardous as no lights, but i was blinding oncoming vehicles, and they in turn would switch to high beams and blind me.

The both of the low beam headlight and the fog light failed to light up without warning at night around 8:30pm. there was a recall related to this issue recently and i had already brought the car in to plaza honda of brooklyn ny to have them perform the recall remedy prior to this incident. so i brought the car back into the dealer and was told the headlight switch was shorted out and needed to be replaced. the dealer told it was not recall related and i had to pay out of pocket to fix the issue. having headlight failure suddenly at night is a very serious safety issue that needs to be taken seriously. i feel that the recall procedure plaza honda performed did not rectify this serious safety issue.

Gm - 2007 honda fit sport a/t with 48,000 miles. first noticed electrical burn smell. then the next day noticed smoke in addition of electrical & plastic burning smell coming from the opening of the headlight switch. same night turned on the headlights and could hear a frying noise from the around the headlight switch. like everybody else who had this problem the next day on my way to the honda dealer the headlights stopped working (fogs too), only the position/brake lights and high beams were working. first diagnosis was that the electrical system short fried both headlights at the same time then after 3 hours later the honda technician found a melted wire connector and wire harness attached to the headlight switch. $400 of repairs with parts. dealer had harness in stock because the harness is the same that was being fixed by the recall for the civic for the same problem.

Driving home in the evening, the low beam headlights on my 2007 honda fit sport suddenly failed for no apparent reason giving me no forward vision on a very dark highway while traveling at 60 mph. in order to get my car home i found i had high beams only therefore no choice but to use them to get home which was blinding oncoming traffic as they continuously flashed me. i had researched the problem online and found that this was a very common issue on my model and year and that an investigation was put in motion. i brought this information in the form of printouts to my local honda dealer when i brought my car to be repaired. my honda dealer charged me an $80 diagnostic fee to troubleshoot the problem and told me that the wiring in a harness to the low beam switch had failed due to corrosion and melting wire from overheating they responded that it would be necessary to rewire the harness connector and replace the switch to fix the problem, an almost $300 dollar repair. when i confronted them about the obvious problem or design flaw in the vehicle they responded that there was nothing they could do about it and required the full price of the work. at the time of bringing the vehicle to the dealer, a thursday, their wiring tech was not available and parts were not available that day and to bring the car back on the following tuesday forcing me to drive at night with the potentially dangerous practice of using my high beams only as i have no other car and my job requires me to drive home at night often

The low beam lights stopped working all of a sudden while driving at night. if my son hadn't figured out to flip on the high beams, he would have gotten in an accident. it looks like the wiring harness to the switch is bad. all of the fuses are fine.

2007 honda fit sport i bought 2 of these cars at the same time. i have noticed after about 25k miles that on both cars the left side of the car has an electrical short that causes one of the lights in the headlight that blinks when you use the auto clicker to lock and unlock the car to go out until you push the light. honda looked at one of the cars and said so sorry don't know why it did that but it works now. now about 4 months later my other car that honda hasn't looked at is doing the same thing. *tr
