Vehicle, 1995 honda odyssey, randomly and suddenly stalled--engine suddenly quit and dash lights went out. engine would not restart, then would start but immediately quit when ignition key was released from start position. also, dash lights behaved abnormally when trying to restart-- they all blinked together in random fashion, or together dimmed and went out, or simply would not come on at all. this stall, or failure to start and run, has occurred whether the vehicle has been warm and running for 30 minutes or more, or has been parked and cold overnight. this random stall has now happened while driving in the middle of high speed heavy traffic. but for a fortunate opening and quick maneuver to a safety lane, we and probably other motorists would have crashed, burned and died. we are not driving the vehicle for fear of something like this happening again but with tragic results. we have just learned there have been separate government ordered recalls for this problem years ago in australia and in canada. where has the united states of america been? owned by big business and big money? on an eight year vacation with george (worthless) bush? both, i'm sure. *tr

Intermittent failure to start or immediate stall with all dash lights going out. next, it stalled while i was going through a busy intersection at rush hour. i managed to avoid a crash and turn into a driveway. it started up after a few tries. it is now at a local repair shop. mechanic says it is ignition switch failure. i would have it towed to the dealer, but for some reason it is not included in ignition switch recall #02vi20000. will have local mechanic repair, would like honda to reimburse.*ak

While driving home from work at the kennedy space center on sr 405, the engine suddenly shut off and could not be restarted. hot melted solder from the ignition switch dripped on my foot burning me as i was trying to maintain control of the vehicle and come to a safe stop off the road. the car could not be restarted and had to be towed to a repair shop. the ignition switch had failed, overheated, melted and had to be replaced. *nm

I needed to take my son to the dr.'s office and when i went to start my 1995 honda odyssey it wouldn't start. i had to hold the key on in the run position, give it gas and put it in drive and it was able to go. car seemed to be ok after that and i had to take my disabled father-in-law to run errands we went ahead. while waiting for him to get a rx, i had the car running as it was a cold day and my 3 year old was in the car. it quit running after a minute and i wasn't able to start it again for a few minutes. told my husband about it when i picked him up and he checked the oil etc. and then it seemed to be fine. next day my husband was driving home in traffic and the car died on him right in the middle of driving! some other drivers helped him push it off the road and then someone used jumper cables and it started running again. after a few minutes it died and would not restart. after checking battery connections etc. and trying to get it to start again, finally after an hour it started. went to auto parts store and had battery tested - was at 1/2 capacity so replaced it thinking it would solve the problem. on the way home from the auto part store it died again right in the middle of traffic. we did research on the web and discovered it is the same problem that was recalled on later years with the ignition switch. called the dealer this morning to see if our vin # was on the list and it is not!!! i do not understand why i have to pay for a problem that is known to exist because my car year is not on the approved list. it is exactly the same part for our 1995 honda odyssey as for the 1997 ones + that were recalled.*jb

Ignition switch burnt up while traveling with family causing the motor to shut down including all power (brakes, steering, dash indicators). seems to be the same problem that honda recalled on 1997-2000 vehicles. the vehicle is a 1995 honda odyssey with 128000 miles. the switch failed several times on a 4 hour drive home before finally failing completely the following day. honda chooses not to cover this defective part, since the vin doesn't match their database search with the 1997-2000 recall.*ak

Ignition switch failed, causing vehicle to stall intermittantly (very, very dangerous when pulling out into traffic!) and making it nearly impossible to start (key had to be held between acc and on). swith disassembly revealed molten pitting on one contact. filing contacts restored normal operation, but copper now lacks silver plating, which may accelerate corrosion. new switch purchased from dealer for $60 and diy replacement took approx. 15 minutes to install (two screws and several harness clips). vehiicle was not covered by honda recall for later (and mechanically identical) models.*ak

On my 1995 honda odyssey, the electrical part of it has caused our vehicle to stop running for no reason while we are driving - that has happened to us twice in the last six days. also, when we turn the key to start the vehicle, none of the instrument lights will come on. in reading other things, my problem sounds just like the problem that brought about the 1997 model year ignition switch recall. *jb

1995 honda odyssey : ignition switch problem: i wrote honda motors and advised them that my honda dealer believes i have an an ignition switch that should be subject to the nhtsa campaign no 02v120000 due to the nature of the failure. i received a letter back from honda on may 20, 2003 stating that my warranty expired and we will be unable to offer any assistance. due to the nature of the failure of my ignition switch being the same as described in your recall campaign, i believe honda should be required to reimburse me the $170.63 that i personally spent to replace my faulty switch. i have the old part and the contacts on the switch are melted. the engine stopped without warning several times on the highway while my wife was driving. i have the old part as proof of the incident and would be willing to mail it to you for analysis. after looking at the ingition switch, talking with my honda service mechanic and reading your recall bullitin, i believe you will agree that my ignition switch should have been recalled and replaced at no charge. as of this letter, i have spent $3,388.30 on my honda in repair and maintenance cost. i'm not asking honda to take responsibility for normal repairs; however, i am asking them to take responsibility for repairs that are perhaps mfg. defects that could increase the risk of a crash due to the parts failure. the very fact that a recall campaign was implemented tell me they have acknowledged that problems exists. i only want my switch to be exaimed and a fair determination made. i know that the recall was for 1997 honda's and my honda is a 1995; however, i purchased it used and the original switch could have been replaced in 1997 with the recalled ingition swicth. for a fax copy of my letter to honda, american honda's response to my letter, and a copy of my cancelled check, please contact me at 256-544-3589 (w) or 256-544-3589 (h). i would appreciate any help regarding this matter & await your reply. *ak

Van would not start and ignition switch needed replacement at a cost of nearly $550. 1995 odyssey was not included in last year's recall but i suspect switches are faulty among all early models based on complaint reports on this website and others.

Ignition switch failed and the car just died! and would not re-start found that van would stay running if key was turned to the run position and held there once you let go of the key the car would die, this is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed as there are millions of honda's out there that may possible have a faulty switch and the car will die with no warning very dangerous!!!*ak

Electrical fire inside driver's side door. where instrument panel (windows/door locks) is. driver's door (material, buttons, plastic) is melted and burnt badly. the van was warming up, 3- 5 minutes. smoke was pouring out when i went to get in and the door was on fire. snow kept the fire at bay until the fire extinguisher was used. the smell of burnt plastic is still horrible, even after leaving the doors open. checked the fuses the next day for the door and window locks and the inside of the fuse was burnt to a crisp. *la

Fire broke out inside driver's door interior while driving. suspect failure in power window, power door lock or power mirror control assembly. fire completely or partial destroyed driver's door, driver's seat, front windshield, header, mirror, sun shade, moon roof, and steering wheel. the entire inside of the vehicle is covered inside with black stuff from the fire. my wife and child were lucky to have gotten out of the vehicle before being burned. dt
