Defect SummaryVehicle description: minivan. the sliding doors may not latch properly.
Consequence SummaryAn improperly latched door could open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion. under certain circumstances, a door could open completely. an unrestrained rear seat passenger could fall out of an open door of a moving vehicle and be seriously injured or killed.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the door latch assembly on all odyssey minvans built from december 3, 1999 through december 16, 1999. also included in this recall are approximately 1,612 odyssey minivans that had the latches replaced under recall 99v-158 or under warranty, that may need to have the latches replaced again. owners of these vehicles will be notified by honda to bring the vehicle to their honda dealer for inspection of the previously replaced latch assembly. latches with the suspect date code will be replaced.
NotesOwner notification began june 22, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

The passenger side sliding door will not stay closed. the problem started with a few failures to close completely but eventually it did close properly. honda service said it required a new motor (cost $600 cdn), but managed to close the door manually and showed us how to shut off the beeping. we have avoided using that door, but this weekend a friend opened it and we could not shut it properly. we had a 6-hour drive home from the cottage. several times on the way home the door slid open when making a turn. i managed (from the front seat) to pull the door back to almost closed. we have now taken it back to honda -- the cost to fix will be about $600. for safety reasons, there should be a manual override to keep the doors closed. *tr

Electric back doors are inconsistent with either not opening/shutting all the way. sometimes will not open at all. not safe with children/persons in backseats for emergency situations. honda repaired once when under certified warranty. has happened several times after. vehicle not under warranty and honda dealer is charging astronomical amount to repair. saying there could be electrical shorts and possible danger. hope something can be done to help all of us, according to online info, several hundred similar complaints exist. *tr

I have owned my honda odyssey since 2004 and i love it. i have been happy with honda in general. the only complaint i have is the sliding doors stick so much that i have to push on the inside and pull on the outside in order to get them to open. i have had to replace 3 of the handles which were around $80-$90 each time because they are plastic and keep on breaking. the one on the passenger side is broke again and i haven't yet gotten it fixed. *tr

My 2000 honda odyssey has had trouble (several different times) with its sliding power doors not latching properly and i've had several repairs on them over the 8 years i've owned the vehicle. as of a few days ago, my driver's side sliding door will not open at all using the power. i have a baby carseat installed in the seat behind the driver's seat, so i've had to get my baby in and out of the car through the passenger side sliding door over the last few days, and i realized that if there were an accident or fire in my car, this would be a safety issue because i would not be able to get my baby out quickly. in order to open the driver's side sliding door, i would have to reach into the car from the driver's door, slide the locking mechanism into the unlocked position, turn off the power to the sliding doors, and then use a lot of force to manually open the sliding door. and sometimes when i have tried this, the locking mechanism immediately slides itself back into the locked position before i am able to get the door open. *tr

The driver's side door failed to open while my wife and daughter were in the car, a 2000 honda odyssey that we have had continual design flaw problems with from virtually the day we bought it new. i had to pay close to $535 to get this door latch replaced!! and american honda motor corp. in torrance refused my request for any assistance whatsoever!! i do not think a door latch should ever have to be replaced, on any car, as this is part of the basic car chasis/frame and should last the life of the car. we had no choice because this door would not open at all and my wife had to crawl in/across from the front passenger-side door to get in until we could get it fixed. *tr

Driving on i270 south towards 33 east at 65 mph with 4 teenagers and 1 8 week old baby in my 2000 honda odyssey and the rear sliding passenger door flies open on its own. my 6 year old daughter was sitting in the seat next to the door when it flew open. it scared her half to death as she was staring at the pavement going by at 65 mph. the door wasn't even on. i turn them off because i am afraid of them opening when they shouldn't after hearing all the stories about these doors. it's a good thing my daughter had her seatbelt on and sitting in her seat or this could have been very tragic. no one died this time. why will honda not see there is a serious safety issue here. the latch has been replaced numerous times and yet it is still failing to the point the door will not stay shut on it's own. something must be done before someone dies here!!! *tr

Right sliding door fails to open. would allow manual opening on several occasion then the door latched into locked position and wouldn't open even manually. taken to dealer service center. that worked on it half a day to find that they really didn't know what was wrong and can't determine the problem. no remedy. took to a honda/acura shop to have looked at. same outcome. said everything looks to be in working order however they couldn't determine why door was not opening and could not get the door opened. claw that hooks to latch will not release. dealer service center suggested cutting the latch with plasma cutters in order to get the door open, however they could not determine if the would be able to fix the problem even then. we can't find anyone who can fix the door. we are in a safety dilemma as our 2 year olds car seats sits on this side of the door. should there be an emergency we would not be able to exit the vehicle fast enough to get all three children out due to the door not working. can anyone provide a solution????? *tr

2000 honda odyssey with automatic sliding doors that malfunction. the door does not close all the way. the door is not flush with the side (rear) panel. there is about a 3/8 inch gap between the rear panel and the back of the door. i am concerned that the door might not protect the occupants because it is not secure. will the door fly off during an impact? i have had to turn off the power to the doors so that it operates manually. however, it is very difficult to open and close - my wife and fours kids, including my 15 year old son cannot open or close the door manually. i am concerned about exiting the vehicle in an emergency. the kids may be in a situation where they are trapped. it also would become a problem if we had to enter the vehicle quickly and were not able to do so. *tr

I am the owner of a 2000 honda odyssey and am having problems with the rear sliding door not closing. it requires us to drive with the light on which is a safety issue at night. the buzzer sounds intermittently causing us to manually turn off power to the door hence trapping our passengers in the car should there be an accident. my mechanic indicates that there are no technical service bulletins on this problem. this is an incessant problem and a major safety hazard. *nm

Electronic doors do not shut completely. we believe this is a safety hazard since the doors to not lock completely. the buzzer has to be disabled for our sanity. we have taken the van to the dealer numerous times but a permanent fix cannot be made. these doors have been defective since the van was first released, and they are a safety hazard. i am afraid the partially closed door may open at high speed, causing possible injury to my children, or causing the distracted driver to swerve into oncoming traffic. this defect must be addressed by honda. *nm

We (my wife and i) have a 2000 honda odyssey ex. the automatic electric sliding doors are constantly breaking and they cost a small fortune to repair. we purchased the honda because of their reputation for creating reliable automobiles. at a minimum, they should offer a way to convert the door from automatic to manual so they can be safely closed and so the automatic mechanism doesn't have to be repaired every 6 months. *jb

I have a 2000 honda odyssey. two weeks ago, my sliding door sensor went off for no reason. the doors were closed but when the vehicle was placed into drive the alarm in the car would sound as if one of the doors was open. i checked the doors and after a couple of times of opening and closing them, the alarm did not sound. i was due to have the car serviced for its 75,000 mile service so i waited to bring it into the dealership. when i brought the vehicle in for it's routine service, as i do for each scheduled maintenance, i was told that the door switch was the problem and that it would cost $1,100 to fix. i explained that the vehicle was under an extended warranty that i purchased at the time i bought the vehicle. honda in turn told me that they had called the warranty company (apparently the warranty was not a honda extended warranty. although, this is what rosenthal had portrayed it as) about the repair and that it was not covered. they told me that i could call the warranty company to complain if i felt so inclined to do. i called the warranty company and they said that the warranty had expired because of the mileage. the vehicle is just over 75,063 miles. they did not care that the warranty had expired. my question is how can this be a non-recall issue if a number of people have had the same problem. this situation is the exact reason why i purchased honda's extended warranty. i believe that honda is responsible for the repair. if i had know the doors on this vehicle would cost that much to fix i would have never purchased that van. *jb

Driver side rear sliding door fails to close completely - sometimes leaves approximatley a four inch gap between door post and edge of door. door must either be pushed closed or re-opened completely and then closed with pressure on rear door edge. occasionally, door will seem locked (dashboard open door indicator light is off) and when making right turns, both the open door indicator light flashes and ceiling map lights will flash on and off when turn has been completed, the lights will go off. after reading all the other consumer complaints, i am extremly concerned that either the door(s) will open during driving or the door(s) will not open during an emergency situation. i cannot believe honda would subject itself to this type of potential liability.*ak

The left automatic sliding door no longer closes all the way on its own (misses by about 1/32) and to keep the buzzer from sounding continuously, you have to bump the door closed with your hip. there is also a small, sharp point that is trying to work its way through this door from the inside, and it's getting worse. i took it to honda and they said that they've seen this problem before and fixing it would cost approx. $700. i asked if you've seen it before, how come there's not a recall on this problem?, and they said to talk to the manager (who wasn't there at the time), and he never returned my call. anyway, i never got the repair done because it was too expensive. then the next week my other door started buzzing continuously, even though it was closed all the way. the only way to stop that buzzing was to disable the door entirely (using the dashboard door switch). for some reason, that problem stopped all by itself about a week after it started, and hasn't come back....but i'm still stuck with the door from hell on the other side. since then, i've gone to other car complaint websites and seen just how common this problem is with odyssey sliding doors, and that even when people get the problem fixed, it sometimes returns with the new installed equipment too -- requiring another fix for $700. can't honda just recall this model and fix the problem once and for all at honda's expense, if it's so widespread?? i love my odyssey, but this makes me think twice about getting another one (my very first odyssey, a 1999 first-year model, had so many problems (including the same sharp point coming through the doors) that i brought it back to the dealer after a year and 1/2 and said they'd better swap me out with something better because i was fed up. that's how i got my new improved odyssey.*ak

We have a 2000 honda odyssey with 40,000 miles on it. great car, except the power sliding door latches keep giving out. this happened during warranty period too and was returned to dealer for repair. however, no parts were replaced; they just reset the computer (cleared error codes). but the problem recurs. now honda has recommended we pay $700 to install new re-designed lock mechanisms ( we are out of warranty period). honda has no official recall covering this problem for our van as this vehicle was not built during the dec-jan period covered by the door latch recall. but the problem is clearly affecting many many other vehicles: witness the many honda service bulletins published on this issue. this is a safety problem caused by a manufacturer defect in either design or manufacturing. it is a safety problem because the door latches, if not replaced/repaired, leave the doors subject to opening while the vehicle is in motion. it should not be the owner's problem to fix by bringing the vehicle in repeatedly to clear computer error codes or pay $700 to replace the faulty latches. i ask that you request or order honda to expand their door latch recall to correct this important safety problem. thank you. john schlosser jss1@sgsi.com. *ak

1)power sliding doors do not operate properly. intermittently, doors won't open, doors open partially and stop, and doors close partially and stop. more importantly, power doors do not stop and retract when pressure is applied in accordance with manual. today was the fourth time that one of my children hesitated when exiting the van and was stuck within the doorway when the door was automatically closing. not only did the door not stop and retract when it reached my child's body, but did not stop even when i placed the full pressure of my body against the door. today, my daughter was thrown out of the van to the ground and i incurred bruising on my left shoulder where i had braced my body against the door to stop it from advancing over her body. i have reported these problems to the dealership time and again. in 2000, they replaced some parts but the problems still occur with regularity. 2)some of the seat belts, particularly the one in the second row, driver's side, jams constantly. we are very often unable to use that seat because the seat belt gets stuck when being drawn out to be buckled. 3)the rear hatch is sometimes inoperable. the unlock button of the remote must be pressed 5 or more times for the hatch to unlock, and even then, it releases only partially. since there is no release inside the car, this is extremely inconvenient and could be dangerous, in combination with the doors not working properly. *jb

Both of my 2000 honda odyssey sliding doors could not be opened today. they get stuck very often. it seems to be related to moisture getting into the door because they get stuck most often after bad weather. the danger here is if there an accident and the doors can not be opened to get out a child from either the inside or the outside.*ak

During a recent (mild) snow storm, both the power sliding doors on my 2000 honda odyssey minivan refused to open. after a few attempts, the motors of both doors gave up altogether; the beeping sound that indicates the blocking of doors also stopped. when i tried to open the driver's side door, the handle broke off. i had the door motors repaired at my honda dealer. they told me that the contacts were moist and therefore the doors did not work. at 42.000 miles i thought this was odd, but i could accept such a defect. i am really concerned, though, about the fact that the door handle broke off just like that. i have two children (4 and 5). the youngest cannot get out of his car seat by himself and i could not get to him quickly. fortunately, we were not in an accident. i notified honda about this and i herewith report the issue. i hope that honda will pay for the repairs, even though the car is no longer under warranty for these matters. i contact the nhtsa also, since i feel this is a major issue. i know that i did not apply any unreasonable force to the door handle to make it break. i can easily imagine someone (in a panic?) doing the same. *ak

Since purchasing a 2000 odysessy ex, i have had repeated problems with both sliding doors. once again today, neither door would open. i have had latches replaced, handles replaces, remotes replaced and still the problem is as bad as ever. the passenger side door generally never closes properly and the door ajar light constantly flickers on and off forcing me to shut the lights in the vehicle off so they stop flashing. whenever the weather is damp or cold, the doors will not work. tonight i had the car running for more than an hour and the doors still would not open. after multiple trips to the dealer there is either an attempt to get me to replace every conceivable part hoping to fix the problem or they simply are unable to repair this situation. not only is it extremely inconvenient to get 4 children in and out through the front doors, but it is dangerous. if there was ever a need to quickly exit the vehicle from an accident or other situation, it often times would be impossible since the doors wouldn't work. after 18 months dealing with this situation, i've had enough. i think it is a serious design flaw which the dealers simply can not fix. i'm willing to bet the original owner traded it in because of the same situation because it started for me the first day we owned the vehicle. *la

I have a 2000 honda odyssey. on august 2nd, i was pumping gas at a gas station on the north side. the gas nozzle was in the gas tank. the sliding automatic door is not supposed to come open when gas is being pumped, however it did. i tried to stop the door, but couldn't, ended up cutting my hand, the door jammed, the pump was stuck, gas cap holder came undone and couldn't get the gas door shut. my paint is scratched on the gas door and the gas door cannot be opened with the gas lever release button inside the car. an attendant at the station came to help, but i do believe that this is a severe fire hazard.*ak

Had the door latch break on right side and was repaired. then have on going issues of trying to open the sliding doors. at times you could not open either slider doors with out trying to get to release by pulling on it which you had to open the other door and either try pull it or pushing on the door from the inside. husband came home then forgot he had to be very gentle with door or that could not believe the door would not open then broke the left sliding door handle off. now it has no handle at all. called the honda dealership and said it warranty was no longer valid. had purchased the extended warranty and when to have it repair said door latch would be covered. then was told since it was a design fault (well know) it would not be covered. since then i have done some research and found im the person with this problem. dealership said they would cover the labor cost and not the part cost. after reviewing how many times some one has taken the time to file it here. concern why it has not been recalled. as it stands not comfortable about the fact the side doors do not work correctly, if something happened were my children would have to exit the van quickly. did call honda to see what can be done to resolve the issue. was told it may take 3 days. *nlm
