I was driving at 60 miles per hour on the freeway when the transmission spontaneously failed. i was unable to accelerate after that point, but was fortunately able to coast off the freeway. had this happened 2 minutes earlier, i would have been stuck in a acute turn in the freeway without a good shoulder to pull of on, leaving me stopped in the middle of the freeway.

I am a licensed used vehicle salesperson. i bought this vehicle at a dealer auction feb. 2012. upon purchase that day, the transmission did not fail with its 11 mph shift until it got warm. we thought it was only a filter as other vehicles have had. when we got it home, we called honda and they said this particular transmission has no way to change fluid or filter. i called honda about a recall, they said no recalls. it would only cost me $3797 dealer cost to replace it. since then i have found that honda still has this problem every vehicle year up to 2012. i think if they can produce and use such a transmission, they should be forced to recall them all. toyota recalled all their engines 2 years ago, regardless of year or mileage and they survived the recall. i am still driving this vehicle, because i don't know what to do with it. can't afford to add this much money to this vehicle and still be able to resell it to the public. *tr

First incident 5/5 08-transmission was shifting hard and then engine light and tcs light went on. brought it to honda dealer the ran the code and stated internal trans failure. since we are the original owners and had all trans service at honda they agreed to split half the cost. i asked what if this should happen again the service rep stated don't worry about it it will last at long time. well here i am again with 45,000 miles later same problem. brought it to honda and they said sorry you on your own 4-5 thousand to replace. that is more than the van is worth. i think it's terrible that honda is aware of transmission problems but refuse to recall or fix them correctly. when the transmission starting slipping on 12/8/12 i was in the middle of traffic and it slipped into neutral without warning. i almost was hit. i couldn't move, the van had no power, just reverted up the 3000 rpm's i was scared. i didn't know what to do. i guess when people start getting killed in car accidents from the defective transmissions from honda maybe something will hopefully be done about it. *tr

We have had three transmission failures with this odyssey. two were replaced under warranty, the last failure occurred at 50k miles, so it was not covered by the 36k warranty. it is ridiculous that a vehicle could go through three transmissions in this amount of time. *tr

Moving from stop at low speed the transmission frequently hesitates before shifting, followed by a loud thump when it does shift. at higher speeds, once in motion, there is rough shifting from 3rd to 4th gear also. judged by me to be unsafe if driven by other family members, but ok with caution if driven carefully by me since i have been principal driver for 13 years. vehicle was inspected 11/13/12 by honda dealership where it has been serviced regularly since new (it is a one-owner vehicle) confirming internal slippage of the transmission with replacement recommended. dealership voluntarily contacted honda district manager in california for a decision on whether honda would participate in replacement cost. request denied. *tr

Engine light came on. honda ran diagnostics and said transmission had to be replaced at a cost of $6,400. we did some web research and found that the transmissions in 2000 odysseys have a long history of early malfunction. the technician at the dealer also acknowledged that these transmissions have been a problem and suggested we contact american honda customer service for financial assistance. we contacted american honda, but they said it is not their problem since the vehicle is outside the age portion of the warranty for this problem (8 years) despite being well inside the mileage portion of the extended warranty. *tr

This vehicle has encountered numerous engine and transmission problems since we acquired it in 2006. the transmission failed at just over 100,000 miles. after a huge fight with honda they reluctantly agreed (because it was just outside of the warranty extension for this known defect) to pay half the cost of the repair. check engine lights continued to come on, in addition to other issues, including egr problems, despite replacing the egr, etc. the vehicle is now at approximately 165,000 miles and the transmission has failed again!! *tr

The check engine light was on. there was no other issues. later checked with the honda dealer service department, i was told the transmission would need to be replaced with $4500. checked the honda owner link and found out there was a recall on honda's transmission. it extended its warranty on it to 100000 miles/7 years. my car is almost 13 years. i always took my car to honda dealer to service. i was never been told it had a recall. read on internet about honda odyssey transmission, there were so many many odyssey owners experienced the issue i have now. it was honda's design fault. called honda of america and filed complain. it was rude and cold.it is true my car was almost 13 years. told to some mechanics on this issue, they all told me about this issue common among honda cars. i was lucky the car was not die when we were 500 miles away from home. *tr

I have bought my used odyssey in january 2012 from a dealer and the transmission failed at 107,000 miles. i know there was a recall in 2004 that had the warranty up to 100,000 miles and an approved class lawsuit in 2006 that extended the warranty up to 109,000 miles. therefore, my van is still under the warranty since its at 107,000. i strongly request that this issue is resolved as soon as possible and that honda fixes and pays for the repair; or at least give me a call and discuss the matter. it is not possible for me to pay for the transmission entirely because i am a student and i simply cannot afford it. thank you. *tr

I am having transmission problems, when shifting from 1st gear to second it slips and suddenly goes into gear, also when in 4th gear it tends to slip, rev up then jumps back into gear. i think its very dangerous and may cause an accident. i read the fourms on problems with the trans on the odyssey and noticed there is too many complants on the same problem. i hope you can look into this issue and help resolve this issue for me and all the other honda odyssey owners. thank you...... *tr

Transmission failure after only 60,000 miles. the transmission slips into neutral when upshifting between gears and then suddenly engages with a dangerous surge forward. i am the original owner of the vehicle and there were no previous problems with the transmission. the condition persisted for two days and required a complete transmission overhaul with a new torque converter. research shows that transmission failure is all too common in honda odyssey vans.

2000 honda odyssey - had trans. replaced in 2005 with 98,000 miles on car. now need to have transmission replaced (7 years later, 98,000 miles again). i am frustrated that i need to replace a 7 year old transmission. i have been meticulous about maintenance on this car. all service by honda dealer. i have owned other brands of cars and never had to replace a transmission. spoke to honda america rep and my car repairman. neither were able to help me to get any assistance with the cost of replacing the transmission. how disappointing. i know it is beyond the warranty from the purchase of the car. however, the 7 year replacement transmission that was done in 2005 may be defective as recognized in the 2006 class action lawsuit agains honda. however, that doesn't matter according to honda america. i am being faced with a $4000 repair or purchasing a new car (was not planned for another year or two). probably will not be a honda if we go the route of purchasing a new car.

When driving the vehicle for the first time, the transmission stalled when trying to shift up from first gear, then lurched forward violently. on doing some online research it appears that honda equipped the odyssey with substandard automatic transmissions, with a very high rate of failure. it's a safety problem as there's either not enough acceleration power when needed...or too much when it does finally engage. i'm very dissappointed in honda, as their reputation over the years has been good for other models, but the odyssey has been saddled with a very poorly manufactured, weak and prone to early failure, transmission. repair and replacement costs are astronomical, $3,000 or more. i've been a loyal honda customer in the past, but this has left a bitter taste in my mouth. honda has failed its customers!

This is my 2nd transmission replacement on the car. unlike the first one when the check engine light came on, this time we were driving on the sunol grade in fremont calif. when the transmission gave out. this could have been a very dangerous situation, but luckily i was able to move into the slow lane. i understand that this vehicle has a history of transmission problems as evident by reading reviews on the car. there has also been class action lawsuits against honda that i would like to see if i can join in. honda knew of this problem very early on because i still have the letter that they sent to me in the first year of ownership offering an extended warranty to every odyssey owner regarding transmission failure. i didn't think much of the letter back in 2000 until my first tranny went out in 2006.

In may 2005 the transmission on this 2000 odyssey failed and was replaced by our local dealer at no charge under the directions of service bulletin 02-062. the mileage at the time was almost 72,000 miles. we had heard that there had been transmission problems and we thought that the 2005 replacement would have solved the problem. now, after another 68,000 miles, the replacement transmission has failed. this replacement odyssey transmission failed after sunset at about 7:00 pm on an unlit two lane country road with little room or opportunity to park safely. my husband, who is almost 70 years old was driving and with no gears barely managed to pull over to the side of the road. it was still dangerously close to the road, but fortunately another driver stopped and helped my husband push the odyssey a few extra feet to a slightly safer area. we were about 100 yards from a curve where approaching cars could not see us until they were almost upon us. the only protection we had was our emergency flashers. we were approximately five miles from our home in a very rural area with no close services. we had to wait on the side of the road for almost two hours for a tow truck to arrive. it was a very dangerous and frightening experience. since we have always been meticulous in dealer recommended and provided maintenance, i have no doubt that inadequate and/or shoddy honda replacements parts are responsible for this failure. that failure put both my husband and myself in a disturbing and perilous situation.

The 4-speed automatic transmission in 2000 honda odyssey models had serious problems with transmission durability. honda spokesman mike spencer stated that four-speed models were afflicted with a bad bearing that could break apart, scattering fragments of metal that clogged fluid passageways in the transmission, causing it to shift erratically.[11] honda responded to the problems by extending the warranty on the transmission on u.s.a. '99-'01 models to 7 years or 100,000 miles (160,900 km). a class action settlement further extended coverage to 109,000 miles (175,400 km) or 93 months for some '99-'01 odysseys in the u.s.a.[12] canada is not included. the five-speed automatic was first installed in odyssey in the 2002 model, but general reliability of the transmission did not improve until 2004 according to consumer reports. mike spencer, a spokesman for acura, said that the five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third-gear clutch pack. as the clutch friction material abraded, it scattered bits inside the transmission case, clogging fluid lines and causing erratic shifting. drivers might suffer slipping, poor or no shifts, or sudden down-shifts from 5th gear to 2nd gear.

Have had 2000 odyssey lx since 19k miles on the odometer, the transmission was replaced at 125k miles, now at 197k miles it has gone out again, my wife was on the road when the transmission failed, she was going 60 mph, it was fortunate that there was light traffic. took it to honda dealership and they called with an estimate to replace the tranny for $8900, trying to have us buy a new one? we dont have the income to afford a new one or a ridiculous transmission replacement. she had taken the vehicle to get serviced just the week prior, the check engine light was on, they cleared the code. honda is trying to sweep this under the rug, i have read the other complaints and guess we are fortunate to only have had 1 replacement. my wife has talked to independent transmission shops and has heard from them the same that has been repeated in the other complaints. building substandard components to get more of a profit with the safety of families at risk is not acceptable. how many americans must suffer at the hands of big business? building perception of what has been touted as quality, but blindsided by greed for the mighty dollar and inferior craftsmanship..

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. while driving at an unknown speed, the contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently. the failure began in 2006. the dealer advised the contact that since she had fueled the vehicle that may have triggered the light to illuminate. in 2007, the contact noticed that the vehicle would violently jerk. she was informed to take the vehicle in for diagnostic testing, which was not performed due to cost. in november 2010, the dealer performed a diagnostic test which concluded that the transmission, catalytic converter, stabilizer and links, front motor mount, right side motor mount, and alignment all needed repairs. the manufacturer referred the contact to the nhtsa to file a complaint. the current mileages were 116,000 and the failure mileages were unknown. bw

My minivans fails to change gears like it should. when i'm driving down the highway the minivans seems to hesitate to change gears. i would not consider this a problem but my minivans carries four children in it at all times. if i'm going down the highway like i'm always doing what happens when my minivans transmission decides to go? i'm up the creek without a paddle and i have my four children with me. i just don't think so. this problem has been occuring on and off for about two weeks. i would love have this problem fixed as soon as possible but you need money to fix something like this and i don't have the money to fix this problem. so what am i to do? simple right? wrong i need to borrow a vehicle from a family member to take my kids to school and do what i need to do.

I have a 2000 honda odyssey that i bought with 119k miles on it. the previuos owner had it serviced by honda. the transmission was replaced at around 60k and now at 170k miles the transmission needs to be replaced again. i have had the transmission serviced every 25k, one at 120k and another at 145k. honda should replace the trannsmission for free, two failed transmissions in 170k miles in unacceptable!

Honda is replacing faulty transmissions with rebuilt transmissions that are just as faulty, if not more so, than the original. my 2000 honda odyssey is currently at the dealer waiting for its 4th transmission. after the first one failed at 62k miles, the dealer assured me that honda had fixed the issues and that the replacement would not have the same problem. woo hoo for honda! they acknowledged a problem, fixed it, and took measures to address it at no cost to the customer. they scored big points with that move... until the second transmission failed 57k miles later (10k miles past the 109k class action warranty extension). when i brought it back to the dealer this time, i questioned him over and over again about the quality of the transmission they were about to install. he acknowledged that some of the early replacements did still have problems, but honda really had fixed them this time. i took his word for it, but sure enough, 38k miles later, that one failed too. how can honda continue to get away with installing these faulty replacement transmissions? i

While returning from a long distance trip, check engine and maintenance required lights came on. stopped as soon as possible for diagnosis - advised torque converter was bad and not drive vehicle any further. vehicle had to be towed 260 miles to personal mechanic, who diagnosed the transmission needed replacement. this was confirmed by a reputable transmission shop. vehicle has always had its regular and scheduled maintenance, as per owner's manual. a notice was received a few years ago, the transmission warranty was extended to cover 7 years from date of purchase or 100,000. the vehicle is ten years old and has just turned 100, 965 miles.

I purchased a 2000 honda odyssey in september, 1999. at approximately 42,000 miles the transmisson went out and it was replaced under warranty. no rental car was available from the dealership. approximately 49,000 miles later the first replacement went out and it had to be replaced again...this time under warranty with a warning that i was getting a big break. again, for 4 days i had to go without a vehicle. now it's 45,000 miles later and the second replacement is also done...this time the car was dangerous to drive as the gears slipped and there was no power to accelerate. this time i have been denied any assistance or compensation by honda and the bill for the new transmission is $4,700. this is due to being outside of the extended warranty of 109,000 miles. i left the car at the dealership in order to think about my options. three (3) tranmissions in 136,000 miles. are you kidding me? my question is...and i don't think it's an unfair one...what kind of sub-par transmissions were they throwing into my vehicle? this is not a normal life span of a transmission; 40,000 miles. if i were to have it replaced again, i would be driving on my fourth transmission in 10 years. please; someone explain to me how this is permissible. like most everything these days, where is the accountability?

Transmission started to slip and then failed almost immediately on our 2000 honda odyssey. this is the third transmission and was installed new under warranty. we were on a rural highway travelly about 55 mph, when the slippage started and quickly lost forward gear and the ability to maintain highway speed. the road is hilly and another vehicle could have rear-ended us at that point. the current transmission has 64,000 miles on it.

 1. driving on interstate 250 miles from home and tcs light and check engine light came on. tcs light went off, check engine light stayed on. 2. took it to honda dealership the next day for service (out of town because still 250 miles from home) and was told transmission failure, as well as given recall notice for the transmission (1999-2001). cost would be $5,400 and a $92 charge for the diagnosis. was amazed by this and service mgr waived diagnosis fee at least. told to call american honda for financial assistance. 3. called american honda with all details and was told they would not do anything further and to ask dealer to work with us (dealership told us ask american honda for help). acknowledged transmission problem and class-action suit, but still would not do anything. i have written a letter to american honda detailing situation and asking for at the very least, financial assistance, in repairing transmission.

We have a 2000 honda odyssey. honda replaced the transmission under recall at about 68,0000 miles, and it was replaced before we noticed any problems with it. we were outside the 3 year warranty they had given us on the replacement when we starting noticing the the transmission slip. they refused to replace it under warranty when we took it in, telling us repair cost would be $4500. at about 130,0000 miles, the replaced transmission actually failed while we were driving on a trip out of town. after it failed, we paid someone else to repair it, cosing us over 3500 in towing, repair and rental car costs. we were stranded on the side of a road with a family of 4 in the 105 degree texas heat until we were able to get assistance.

Had transmission completely replaced on 2007 because it had gone south. now 2 years later the replacement is doing the exact same thing. they offered 50% as apparently the new transmission had all of a one year warranty on it. the original replacement was no charge, but says nothing at all about warranty on the paperwork. only when we took it back to the dealer did we find out apparently it was a one year warranty. the guy at the service counter told me if a customer pays any money for the replacement, it is a 3 year/36000 mile warrant. if it's free, it's a one year warranty. talked to the 800-999-1009 number and the phone rep, while polite, was defensive and avoided honda taking any responsibility for the problem. said 50% was more than fair and above and beyond their responsibility, even though this was a new transmission that had crapped out after just 2 years.

I own a 2000 honda odyssey. i am sure you are famiiliar with their known transmission issues. honda is well aware of this problem, and without a recall, decided to simply extend the warranty from 5yrs to 7yrs, knowly that most people would run into problems after the 7yr mark, my engine light came on at the 6yr mark. i have always taken the vehicle to the honda dealership for service. as the engine light was on, i was told to just ignore it, as it must have come on after filling up gas, and not to worry, as it will go off automatically. finally i told them to check the codes, and now they tell me it needs a new transmission, but to continue driving it, as just because the light is on, the transmission is not dead and to continue driving until i notice any problems. well, after a 4hr road trip, the enginel light and tcs light came on, and i didn't realize the extent of the problem, until i stopped and had to make a lt hand turn. as i stepped on the gas to enter the intersection, the van hesitated, and then jerked forward. had the delay been any longer, my family and myself would have been in a serious accident. i replaced the transimission at honda, and now 18months later, it needs to be replaced again. honda is well aware of this transmission issue, and should be responsible for repairing this problem once and for all. why keep replacing a transmission knowing it will only last another under 2yrs. my only option is to sell this van, but it's not fare to the next unfortunate person. this is a serious safety hazard.

We bought a used honda odyssey 2000 van with only 60,000 miles. the previous owner took meticulous care of the van and had it maintained regularly which is why we were surprised at 67,000 miles the transmission gave out. i was driving on a major highway when the gears started slipping. i was in a 50 mile per hour zone when the gears wouldn't shift and i was stuck in third gear. this was extremely dangerous and could have led to a serious crash. luckily, i was able to get the van to the side of the road to a very narrow shoulder. when i researched this, i found that numerous people have had transmission issues with honda vans. we inquired about getting it fixed under warranty but were told that we were outside of the 93 month parameter. the problem is that the previous owner had no issues with the transmission and therefore did not need to change the transmission under warranty (service bulletin 02-062). we will now have to pay $3500 for a transmission that should be recalled and should be replaced no matter the time frame. if it is a faulty transmission, they should be held accountable for this product. this situation could have been a lot worse had i lived in a big city and experienced these problems on a freeway. something needs to be done!!! *tr

This is the 2nd transmission failure on my 2000 odyssey, it was suddenly slow down while driving on a 65 mph highway as the transmission slipped and shifted down gears. the check engine and tcs lights are on. the failure code was read as p0740 in a dealership. this is a very common problem and the car may suddenly slow down or speed up or complete stop in the traffic without any prediction from the driver. it's not only very dangerous to odyssey driver and passengers but also to the other cars on the road. my 2000 odyssey got 2 transmissions failed already. i don't have confidence on the 3rd one. in nhtsa safety complaint data base you have so many similar reports already. nhtsa cannot allow this situation continues and so many dangerous odyssey vans running with dangerous transmissions. honda once recalled some model years odyssey but not all problematic years. why this happened? on the internet car communities like edmound.com and odyclub.com, many customers are experiencing this dangerous now. it may be the high mileages of the cars led to high rate of failures. honda should recall and fix this safety issue before any real fatal accident happens. *tr

I'm writing to you to inform you about the serious issue with the transmission that was originally put into honda odyssey's from 2000-2003. first of all i would like to introduce myself. my name is hoang pham and my family owns an automotive repair shop in arlington, va and have always been loyal customers to american honda and their vehicles, always have recommended their product to customers looking to purchase new vehicles since we were very pleased with their products. i've always known about this issue with their transmissions and how they have according to them known defects in materials and worksmanship. i am writing to you now to let you know that these vehicles are potentially dangerous driving around without getting repaired and having the updated transmission installed, my vehicle now sits with only 79000 miles on the odometer and honda refuses to take care of any issues, i obviously can repair this vehicle myself but find it hard to pay for something that a manufacturer acknowledges as a defect. i understand that they have had a 109,000 miles or 7 years and 9 months warranty extension on it but i believe that is not enough. people will be seriously injured or killed if this is not taken care of properly, luckily for me my transmission failed in a parking lot and not at highway speed going 60-65 miles per hour. *tr

I own a 2000 honda odyssey minivan. my wife (51 yrs old) was driving it on rt 1 in new jersey and when the traffic light turned green the engine revved but wouldn't move and then all of a sudden it started moving. this happened 2 times. it also now shifts gears from 1st to @nd gear at 3000 rpm's.i took the van to my mechanic and he put the obdii code reader on the car and got a p1740 code which means the transmission is failed. the van has 93,000 miles on it. i called american honda about this and they did a search on my vin # and told me the transmission was changed ar 53,540 miles at huntington honda in huntington, long island, ny, so the 2nd transmission only lasted 40,000miles. the dealer wants 3000.00 dollars for a remanufactured transmission with a 1 year 12,000 miles warranty. i don't trust car dealers so i'm letting my honda mechanic do it(he has been fixing honda for 25 years). reading many honda odyssey forums on line apparently there's a design flaw and honda is well aware of it as your organization is probably aware as well. just a footnote to say i take great care of my vehicles, especially the one my wife and 2 kids are riding in!!!!! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that both of the sliding doors were experiencing numerous failures. the doors are supposed to automatically slide open whenever she presses the buttons or pulls on the handle. when she does this, the doors fail to open properly. occasionally, the doors do not open at all and will close halfway, forcing her to have to exit the driver's seat and close the door manually. the failure has since worsened. the rear driver's side sliding door was not working at all. the passenger side sliding door will not automatically close and must be opened or closed manually. both doors were replaced under warranty. the contact was unsure of the work performed on the doors at the time of service; however, the failures would immediately recur. the only way that the rear passengers could exit the vehicle was through the front passenger or driver's side door. the contact believes that in an event of a crash, the children would not be safe. the doors have not been replaced and only the passenger side sliding door is currently able to open. in addition, the transmission is failing and has been repaired at least three times. while driving, the contact noticed that the brake and tcm indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. when she reached 40 mph, the rpm dial began moving up and down randomly. she took the vehicle to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. a few days later while driving 40 mph, the vehicle shut off and was towed to the dealer. the dealer rebuilt the transmission; however, it failed again six months later. the transmission was replaced a second time, but failed again after a few weeks. the failure mileage was 74,614 and current mileage was 137,066.

Purchased honda odyssey new in late summer/fall of 2000. vehicle downshifted hard while braking since new. thought it was how the vehicle operated. i got a postcard in the mail a few years ago stating honda was going to extend the warranty on the transmission because of a potential problem. i currently have 136,000 miles on the van. the check engine light came on 2 weeks ago. i took it to the garage to have inspection done & to figure out why the light came on. the check engine light came on about 3-4 years ago and honda said it was the catalytic converter and the dealer (piazza honda of reading, pa) replaced it for free. when i went to pick up the van from the inspection and the garage would not pass the inspection. the error code that came up was po740 and they said the transmission would need to be replaced, but i should take it to the dealer to verify. i took the van from the garage to the dealer and gave them the receipt from my inspection (which had the error code on it). the service guy took the receipt with him into the garage bay, talked to the manager and came back out. he told me i need a new transmission and it would cost me $2500-$4500 to replace it. i asked him if they were doing any goodwill with the on going transmission issue and he said no. i also asked specifically if they would split the cost and he said no. i have had the van serviced several time at that specific honda dealer and nothing was ever said to me about the transmission issue. honda expects me to pay for a new transmission on a known defect in their product. *tr

2000 honda odyssey ex - experienced transmission slip, followed by a jerk while driving. i thought it would need a flush, even though it has not reached the honda maintenance schedule. had the mechanic take a look at it and flushed out the transmission fluid with new honda atf. issue started arising a few weeks after the flush and it became a problem. took it to the mechanic again and found out it was a transmission problem. the car currently has roughly close to 82k miles and dealership stated this is out of the extended 7yr warranty phase. i did some research and found out this vehicle is under the class lawsuit for '99-'01 odyssey model (http://www.hondatransmissionsettlement.com/php/login.php), which extends the warranty to 109k miles. however, manly honda of santa rosa denied coverage and it would cost ~$4k for repair. we only use the odyssey for weekend family drives or pick up furniture/supplies from costco. i've always thought honda would be considerate and vehicle very sturdy, but now i would have to think twice before purchasing another honda. p.s. i've owned 4 honda/acura vehicles in the past and never had an issue, but this issue is getting out of hand. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 honda odyssey. while driving 20-40 mph, the dashboard light would illuminate intermittently. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. approximately three months later while driving 30-40 mph the vehicle would hesitate then fail to accelerate when he depressed the accelerator pedal. the dealer stated that the egr valve caused the failure and made the replacement however, the failure continued to occur. the dealer then stated that the transmission caused the failure and recommended a transmission replacement. as of january 3, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. there is a recall for the power train: automatic transmission (nhtsa campaign id #04v176000) however, the dealer stated that his vin was not included. the failure mileage was 74,169 and current mileage was 84,126.

I have purchased a 2000 honda odyssey from willis honda on 10/26/2007 when i went home to register my car on the honda website. the owners page said there was an extended warranty for the transmission. that ws still open. i have noticed delayed shifting. and yesterday when driving on the highway there was a loud bang coming from the back of the car? the car i have bought was the dealers service car. the transmission should have been repaired while it was under warranty now the warranty just about expired 7 years or 100,000 miles and it is just about 100,000 miles. please fix. thank you. *tr

I was driving my 2000 honda odyssey ex along the lombard street in san francisco when the transmission suddenly failed. i had 2 children and 3 adult passengers in the car. i stopped at the inclined road waiting for other cars in front to drive up. i then switched the gear to 2 hoping that it will be enough to drive the car. at that point, it failed to accelerate forward but instead started moving backwards even if i attempted to max the gas pedal. i tried shifting to gear 1 but still the weight was pulling us down and it crashed the car behind causing a minor damage on the exteriors of both cars. i then asked all my passengers to get off the car and somehow i was able to maneuver the car down slope. i then parked the car in the side street, turned off the engine, opened the hood and let it cool down for about 30 minutes. after that i was able to drive the car home and tried to avoid steep inclined roads. researching the internet, i found several reports of transmission problems in honda odyssey minivans and my 2000 model appears to be included in the list that honda has extended the transmission warranty to 100k miles. is this true? was the problem in my car an indication of a failing transmission and/or a manufacturing defect? the car has 81k miles and i'm the second owner and it is already out of standard warranty. i planned to have it checked by a mechanic. i used to love this odyssey but after this incident i'm no longer sure if i can really rely on this car. any help would be highly appreciated. *jb

Honda odyssey 2000 transmission failures, 5 transmission changes in 7 years. the last time to change for a new transmission was on september 27, 2007 at 125,079 miles. the repair cost was $3,634.05, which was outrageous and but not reimbursed by honda corporation due to the high mileage per its management. however, for only 125,000 miles, i had to change transmission 5 times in seven years, which is very ridiculous. i believe that the transmission failure is defect of the car instead of the high mileage. *jb

Purchased vehicle used from private party with 45,000 miles on it. vehicle was well maintained by previous owner and i continued with all required maintenance per honda service manual. a slight bearing growl was audible for several thousand miles before failure at 55,000 miles. transmission began shifting hard from 1-2, and slowly on other shifts. took vehicle to reputable transmission shop and had it rebuilt at a cost $3100. evidently, honda has extended its warranty to 7 years/ 100,000 miles to vehicles whose vin # falls within the lot of those with abnormally high transmission failure rates. since my vehicle is classified as a 'grey market', it doesn't qualify to receive extended warranty coverage. but if this vehicle had stayed in canada, honda would've replaced it when it failed. or if this same vehicle had spent a year/ 12,000 miles in canada before it was transferred to the u.s., honda would've replaced the transmission. but they won't for me due to a technicality. how's that for customer non-service! to any reasonable person this is bull#@%*! any known factory defect should be warranted no matter where the vehicle is used or how it was originally sold. if honda seeks to claim superiority over other brands based on reliability and customer care they should stand behind their product and deal fairly with customers that have legitimate warranty claims and not hide behind some legal loophole they and other automakers probably had a hand in creating. since this problem is an obvious safety issue, i believe there should be a recall, not just a 'selective' warranty. *nm

The car lurches when accelarating from a standing stop. it feels like the transmission is catching, and is a jerky movement. has gotten worse in 2004 when the engine warning light has been on at least three times. *ak we bought the car new from what was apparently canadian inv entory. we were told that because the car was canadian the original warranty did not apply and the dealer provided 3rd party coverage. while we did report the issue during the coverage period, it was not clear what exactly it was (at least to us) and was not identified as a transmission problem. only in 2004 have we and the dealer concluded it was definately a transmission issue. honda usa will not acknowledge the problem because it is a gray market vechicle and said we must deal with honda canada, and honda canada says it is a us problem and won't deal with it. while the dealer is supportive and their service department has worked with us, they direct us to the manufacturer as they say the third party coverage has expired and the gray market vechicle has no warranty. i feel i have a safety issue and that neither honda or the dealer will stand behind their vechicle. when i discussed the issue with honda canada, they told me the vin indicated that a previous owner was budget rental cars, so how they are involved in the shifting of dealer inventory is questionable at best. i don't understand why they are allowed to operate in this way, and why the manufacturer and/or the dealer will not stand behind the vehicle and address a serious problem. this problem is not normal and should not be happening on a car with 65,000 miles, especially one that has been well maintained with all scheduled service.

In december 2003, the transmission and catalytic converter went out on my 2000 honda odyssey mini van. the car is only three years old and had only 65,000 miles on it--too soon to need a new transmission. after some research, i discovered that honda has serious problems with their transmissions and the honda dealer i took it to admitted as much. to fix this known defect in their vehicles, honda has extended the warranty on transmissions on many of their cars including my year model and make. so the service department said that honda would replace my transmission for free. however, when they pulled up my vin i was given the unfortunate news that my car has a canadian vin--a supposed grey market vehicle and that honda voids the warranty on these vehicles. i had never even heard of a grey market vehicle. so even though my honda odyssey was made in the exact same canadian plant with the exact same sub standard transmission as the cars they are replacing transmissions on, honda refused to pay for my transmission. this is in my opinion a safety-related defect; when my transmission was slipping, my car was completely unreliable in acceleration. i was so afraid that i would pull out in front of someone or be turning and my car wouldn't go and they would crash into my van with my two small children in the back. thank god my husband and i were able to afford the $3200 bill for a new transmission so i didn't have to drive my unsafe vehicle more than 2 weeks (although that was too long if you ask me). but i know there are many people with these faulty transmissions who can't afford to get them fixed right away, so they just drive the car until they can afford a new one. it's a safety issue to have those people on the road. to me, honda should recall these transmissions; they are an obvious threat to everyone's safety on the road. thank you. *cb

When driving from va to mi, going through mountains of pa, the transmission would down shift from 4th to 3rd. as i proceeded down long steep mountain grades, but only after i touch the brakes just a bit. this occurred about 3 times. thought something was wrong with transmission. then i figured it was an ingenious design in keeping the car within a reasonable speed. once i reached level ground and put my foot gently on the accelerator, the car upshifted to 4th and overdrive with no problems. i have had no problems with transmissions yet. yet! advice: drive in 3rd gear when driving around town. only put gear shift into 4th when you know you'll be driving at 50+ mph for an extended period of time. i too have heard the clattering in the engine bay when the engine runs at about 1500-1700 rpms, so i keep it in 3rd gear unless i'm driving on the highway. i have approximately 32000 miles on 2000 odyssey and no problems yet. i am the second owner. first owner bought 100,000 mile warranty from warranty direct upon purchase back in 2000, which was transferable to me when i bought it just after christmas 2002. *ph

On june 16, 2000 my 2000 honda odyessy was rear ended or hit by another vehicle in the rear bumper. the cause of the accident was the transmission failure with only 6,000 miles on the odyessy. i was southbound on euclid ave. at interstate 5. i was stopped at a red light in a uphill position. i was the first vehicle at the light. when the light turn green, i proceeded to go and my odyssey transmission slipped and then caught and then the engine stalled out. this caused the odyssey to lurch forward and then stop suddenly. when the odyssey stopped i still had my foot on the gas to go so that no brake lights came on to warn the drivers to my rear that my vehicle was about to stop. my odyssey was hit in the rear bumper by the vehicle to my rear. the accident was reported to the anaheim police who came to the scene and made report # dr no 00-23199. the vehicle to my rear was without insurance. i reported this accident to honda of america and the called me back to inform me that they would not assume responsibility for the damages to my vehicle. i have not had an appraisal of my damages yet it could be several thousand dollars. i am holding off because on the appraisal because the vehicle behind mine had no insurance and american honda claims no responsibility. on a separate incident on june 24, 2000 my left rear tire blue out at 70 mph with only 7,500 miles on it. i came to a safe stop and had the tire replaced for $100.00 . another problem is that the brakes grind with a metal to metal sound when coming to a complete stop. another problem is that my power steering sometimes hesitates and jerks. another problem is when running the rear airconditioning on high the rear blower speed fluctuates like as if it has a bad connection. another problem that i have noticed since the colder weather around november, 2000 when i use the defroster on the front windows it smells like an electrical fire, or like wires are burning. *ak (dot number: m30d tiresize: p215/65r16)

This is a brand new minivan, purchased with only 9 miles in odometer. after a week of driving it, it began to feel like it need it more rev in order to pick-up speed, specially when driving in freeway conditions (traffic). the van did not downshift as expected for about 10 minutes, in order to gain speed, i had to press the accelerator until the engine reached 3k rpm, and even then the transmission noise continued. it is not a continuos occurance, it is doing it every four to five days. i took the van to the dealer where i bought the van and service inspected the vehicle through a computer, which detected nothing wrong with the van, although the service manager had noticed the problem. in the first instance i was given the van back without anything done to it, except for a transmission fluid flush. five days latter, on april 17, 2000 the noise and train problem showed up again, this time more serious. i took the van to another dealer, and they performed a computer test that again showed nothing wrong with the vehicle, however the new service adviser did notice the problem when he took it for a test drive. honda was contacted and the company adviced a complete replacement of the transmission. being such a popular model the needed transmission is not available and according to honda it will take up to 30 days to get a replacement , hopefully new. another area of concern is the brake pedal, one can hear the booster when pressing the pedal and at times the brakes do not engage inmediatelly. so far service has not been able to look into the problem since the transmission matter is of more importance. i really appreciate this opportunity to inform your agency of the problems i have encounter. sincerely, rene rodriguez

Purchased used 2000 honda odyssey from honda dealership (366 ml). took great care of vehicle, at 80,309 ml transmission needed replacing. researched issue found that for the 2000 honda odysseys, honda acknowledged a manufacturer's defect with the transmissions used. my vehicle was of canadian origin however it was nonetheless affected by this particular flawed transmission as verified by my vin. in response to an acknowledged defective transmission used in the 2000 honda odysseys honda responds by extending warranties to 7yr/100,000 miles. however because my vehicle is a canadian model odyssey it doesn't matter to american honda that is was affected by the faulty transmission they will not honor any service to correct their acknowledged manufacturer's defect. the vehicle is registered/used in the us so honda of canada will not honor any service to correct the problem. there are numerous consumers in my same position- an acknowledged manufacturer defect specific to our 2000 honda odysseys yet for corporate reasons honda refuses to be accountable to us for something they have already taken responsibility for and have selectively provided remedy to correct. not extending the same recourse as was provided to all other 2000 honda odyssey owners in both canada and america has excluded a population of owners that are nonetheless affected. for honda to provide remedy to select 2000 honda odyssey owners and refuse remedy to a certain class of individuals is extremely irresponsible. this specific transmission defect is clearly a manufacturer/safety issue in that a defective transmission can severely impede the performance of a vehicle. honda has acknowledged the defect yet selectively provided certain vehicle owners recourse but failed to provide all. these defective vehicles abandoned by honda create safety concerns not only for the vehicle driver but also to anyone on the road with them. honda needs to take responsibility for all affected vehicles. *nm

Transmission replaced at approximately 1000 miles due to defective torque converter according to servicing honda dealership. van pulls hard to the right. problem first noted day after delivery. has been in dealership service department several times for this problem. dealer replaced firestone tires with michelins, replaced wheels and performed 4 wheel alignment. pulling to right problem not solved. returned to dealer and the service manager verified that it is not a wheel, tire nor alignment problem. service manager told me that it is probably due to the crown in the road. van pulls hard to right on all roads within a matter of seconds of taking hands of off the wheel. my other two vehicles driven on the same roads and in the same lanes do not pull to the right nor left. *ak( dot number: )
