I have had problems with my honda odyssey 2000 sliding doors since the year bought it brand new. i have taken it to the dealers multiple times. they were never able to fix it. they would not even try when it was under warranty. both sliding doors work off and on, but the passenger side will not latch closed any more without having to manually push it from the out side. to keep them from buzzing we turn the door control switch off, which is a real safety hazard. no one can open the doors until the switch is turned back on. there have been times when everyone in the car has to get out the drivers front seat because neither sliding door will work consistently. it would be impossible to exit the car quickly in an emergency. the doors can be opened manually only if you are a strong adult. *tr

Check engine light on. dealer reveals code p0420. they (russ darrow milwaukee, wi) are saying that the catalytic converter as well as an o2 sensor need to be replaced cost $1,200. the current mileage is 110,000 and failure mileage was 91,000 and i am the original owner of the vehicle. sticking sliding door's in winter (russ darrow & david hobbs milwaukee, wi) have all the serivice records on the sticking door issuse and they where unable to resolve it. dealer's fix for sticking sliding door was to lube the sliding door every winter instead of finding a solution. this has been on going since 2002 and now i just lube the door's my self instead of wasting my time at dealer's service center.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that both of the sliding doors were experiencing numerous failures. the doors are supposed to automatically slide open whenever she presses the buttons or pulls on the handle. when she does this, the doors fail to open properly. occasionally, the doors do not open at all and will close halfway, forcing her to have to exit the driver's seat and close the door manually. the failure has since worsened. the rear driver's side sliding door was not working at all. the passenger side sliding door will not automatically close and must be opened or closed manually. both doors were replaced under warranty. the contact was unsure of the work performed on the doors at the time of service; however, the failures would immediately recur. the only way that the rear passengers could exit the vehicle was through the front passenger or driver's side door. the contact believes that in an event of a crash, the children would not be safe. the doors have not been replaced and only the passenger side sliding door is currently able to open. in addition, the transmission is failing and has been repaired at least three times. while driving, the contact noticed that the brake and tcm indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. when she reached 40 mph, the rpm dial began moving up and down randomly. she took the vehicle to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. a few days later while driving 40 mph, the vehicle shut off and was towed to the dealer. the dealer rebuilt the transmission; however, it failed again six months later. the transmission was replaced a second time, but failed again after a few weeks. the failure mileage was 74,614 and current mileage was 137,066.

The driver's side door failed to open while my wife and daughter were in the car, a 2000 honda odyssey that we have had continual design flaw problems with from virtually the day we bought it new. i had to pay close to $535 to get this door latch replaced!! and american honda motor corp. in torrance refused my request for any assistance whatsoever!! i do not think a door latch should ever have to be replaced, on any car, as this is part of the basic car chasis/frame and should last the life of the car. we had no choice because this door would not open at all and my wife had to crawl in/across from the front passenger-side door to get in until we could get it fixed. *tr

Driving on i270 south towards 33 east at 65 mph with 4 teenagers and 1 8 week old baby in my 2000 honda odyssey and the rear sliding passenger door flies open on its own. my 6 year old daughter was sitting in the seat next to the door when it flew open. it scared her half to death as she was staring at the pavement going by at 65 mph. the door wasn't even on. i turn them off because i am afraid of them opening when they shouldn't after hearing all the stories about these doors. it's a good thing my daughter had her seatbelt on and sitting in her seat or this could have been very tragic. no one died this time. why will honda not see there is a serious safety issue here. the latch has been replaced numerous times and yet it is still failing to the point the door will not stay shut on it's own. something must be done before someone dies here!!! *tr

I own a 2000 honda odyssey ex minivan with automatic sliding side doors. the driver's side sliding door has been malfunctioning for about six years, as it fails to automatically open and/or close using the dash switch, remote (key) button, or the door handle on the sliding door itself. the door will do one of the following: upon actuation of above opening methods, it will not open at all, but beep three times; open partially and stop - and beep three times; open partially, then close on its own; or successfully open. i estimate the failure rate for failing to successfully open to be approximately 66% - roughly 2/3 of the time. this van is used, at times, to transport children, and i consider this problem to be safety-related, as it is most-difficult to open this door manually - from either inside or outside the minivan. *tr

Power sliding van doors will not close or open completely,we have to drive with infants in seats next to doors that will not close. if we were involved in an accident or any emergency that required immediate evacuation these faulty doors would prohibit timely departure from the interior of the vehicle and prevent any convenient access by emergency personnel. so far honda is ignoring this major safety defect and cannot fix this problem. *tr

I am owner of honda odyssey 2000. i have had problems with sliding doors on this vehicle from early on. after the warranty expired, i have had multiple failures on these doors and they have cost me hundreds of dollars. dealer charged me $500 to fix these doors in my recent incidence. these repair charges are a highway robbery since i feel i should not be paying for what is clearly a manufacturing and design defect in the vehicle. why isn't honda recalling these vans and fixing these door problems once & for all? *tr

My 6 year old daughter's finger got caught in the sliding door of our 2000 honda odyssey mini van. the door mechanism failed to detect her finger in its path and proceeded to close resulting in contusion and abrasion. she was treated at an emergency care facility where they ruled out any broken bones (thankfully). extreme human force was needed to pry the door open so that she could remove her injured finger from the closed door. this door has been checked in the past on 2 occasions by 2 separate honda dealerships. both determined that the door operated in compliance with the manufacturer's guidelines. i am so thankful that the outcome was not more serious as it could have been. i am only interested in getting the word out to other owners and find out what the manufacturer has to say about these circumstances. *nm

Manual sliding doors stick to the point that occupants cannot get out of the car. it has taken two large adults (one pulling from the outside and the other kicking from the inside) to open the doors. problem began in summer, 2003. we broke and had to replace one of the door handles in 11/04 because we were pulling so hard to get the door open. complained whenever we took the car in for service, but our complaints never appear on our invoices. therefore, according to honda, there is no record of a problem with our doors. honda's recommendation has been to lubricate the doors, but we never notice any improvement in the problem. my dealer just informed me that a service bulletin has been issued recommending the replacement of the door seals at a cost to us of nearly $400. as a goodwill gesture, they have offered to pay for the parts, but we will pay nearly $200 to correct this problem. this seems to be a safety issue that honda should correct, but as the problem arose after our 30,000 mile warranty, they feel there is no obligation to fix the problem. i keep thinking about my children being trapped, perhaps with the car on fire, and wonder how honda can treat the issue so casually. *nm

Sliding doors on honda odyssey (van) have the tendency to stick and not open without repeated eforts if not used for a day or two. in many instances the handle of the vehicle broke off. it is potentially dangerous, incase of an emergecy the childern in the car seat in the rear of the car can not be easly reached. the manufacturer is well informed of the problem but does not given it a serious consideration.*ak

2000 honda odyssey lx manual sliding doors sticking problem solution: a) after attempting to open the sliding door, and it only pops open slightly and sticks; b) from inside the vehicle, push outward on the upper corner (of the sliding door) which is closest to the rear of the vehicle. it should push outward easily, and the door should slide open freely. c) apply lubricant to the upper rear corner of the weather stripping rubber: try silicon grease, or silicon spray lubricant, or graphite powder, or talcum powder. problem solved. no more sticking when re-opening the previously stuck door. its probably the physics of the pressure of the door against the rubber creating sufficient friction to prevent the door from popping completely away from the rubber weather stripping and thus preventing the door from sliding open. *la

We own the lx model with the manual sliding doors. the rear passenger door seals have been replaced at least 4 times on both rear sliding doors. they stick most of the time to the point we have broken the door handles off while attempting to open the doors. this is a huge safety issue. the dealer has been very willing to replace seals on the doors at no charge, but we are concerned that if there were a need to get our children out of the car in a hurry, that the doors might not operate at all. there are times i have not been able to open the doors at all. this is a frustrating problem - as well as a safety issue. i don't even want to fathom what it is going to cost me to have these seals replaced after the warranty is up. yet once the seals fail, the doors do not open. web sites like edmunds.com have significant numbers of anecdotal reports of odyssey owners with continuing problems with these doors. someone could easily be trapped in one of these cars after an accident. please investigate this problem and encourage honda to find a permanent solution to this issue. *ph **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**770820

Passenger side slider periodically sticks, sometimes difficult to open, sometimes impossible. worse in cold weather. sometimes will un-latch partially, causing door ajar light to come on. dealer has fixed this problem several times by lubricating the seals, giving a temporary fix. in freezing weather neither slider will open. at one point both doors developed dents from the inside out, that the dealer repaired as a warrenty service. now service department has told me that lubricating the seals will have to be a regular service, which i find unacceptable as this is a safety issue for passengers riding in the car who could be trapped inside. we also had a problem with the power door locks that the dealer fixed under warranty.  Passenger side rear power sliding door will not close all the way. door slides fully shut, but then reverses about 1/2inch and is visibly not latched/closed. also at times when door does visually close all the way, while driving the audible warning noise for an open door comes on but the dashboard indicator does not show which door. depress the 'close' button on the right side power door will silence the alarm while driving, yet the problem reoccurrs....it's tough to drive with that damn noise blaring and you also wonder if the door is really shut and safely locked? i'm taking the vehicle to the dealer on 5/30/02, but based on the complaints shown on nhtsa website for similar problems, i am uncertain whether it is even possible to satisfactorily and completely fix in one visit. i'm 12 miles from passing the warranty period on the vehicle...called the dealer when i was 450 miles away but couldn't get appt. until 6 days later...i cannot park the vehicle just to make sure i don't go over 36,000 miles.... i'm also wondering if they do fix, will future fixes if same occurs or if not fixed satisfactorily will be covered as the problem has started while under warranty. the dealer i am going to, hinshaws honda has been in my experience in the past given 100% to all repairs, and i'm looking forward to getting the same honest and satisfactory service on this problem as i've had in the past. (or i'll be emailing the nhtsa again) i am doing this, to add my problem so if a recall is warranted, my problem can be counted.

Left side sliding door keeps sticking closed will not open until car is repeatedly turned off and on. this has happened repeatedly since the van was new! seems to be electrical rather than door seal sticking as honda claims. each time they just grease the door seal. now the left outside handle has broken when trying to open door. and now the right side sliding door is starting to stick also. have complained about this every time we take it in for service/repair. honda just shrugs it off and says they will fix the broken handles free while its under warranty. the dealship has never once let on to me they are having problems with other vans until i said i found out from the nhtsa website. does my family have to be trapped in the vehicle and die before honda does something about this?

Serious design flaw: the rear seat power sliding doors auto-reverse only when encountering an object within 12 inches from closure. if something larger , such as an adult human body, is in the doorway, the door actually increases pressure against the object and continues in this manner all the way to closure. the auto-reverse feature does not engage , even when the door becomes less than 12 inches from closure! my wife experienced a bruise when she was in the doorway and my daughter mistakenly pulled the outside door handle, starting the door closing, and there was no auto-reverse. i took it in to the dealer for repair, and was informed that this was in fact how it was designed! i tried contacting both the regional and national honda customer relations departments to complain, but no one answers the phone. i think this is an outrageous design flaw. *ak

The drivers side sliding door on our van keeps getting stuck ajar when i try to close it. i believe this is very dangerous and have had to put a lot of force against it to get it closed since i have two small children in the back seats. i have taken it in to hall honda to get fixed once and they thought they fixed it and it still does it. the problem is that is doesn't do it always, it is on and off. yesterday was the last time. i does it at least 5 out of 7 days a week. i put two small dents in the door trying to close it while i was away from home once since my children were in the back and i didn't want to leave it that way. the honda dealer is acting as if they are not going to fix the dents but if the door wasn't malfunctioning the dents wouldn't be there. i was afraid my children could fall out while i was driving home and couldn't leave it open. i am taking the van back in tonight and we'll see if they fix it this time. also i will be talking to them about getting the two little dents fixed free of charge since this wasn't my fault. this problems started shortly after we bought the van. thank you cheryl cepek. *ak

My son accidently pulled the level to close the power sliding door. my wife was still putting stuff in the van. the door pinned her against the frame, it did not stop as expected. i later checked the operation of the doors and found the passenger side to be intermittent (sometimes it would stop) and the driver's side would never stop. my wife suffered severe back and neck pain and bruises on her shoulder. according to the owner's manual the door should stop. however, the next sentence says it may not be immediate and may cause bruising and discomfort. this is a serious hazard for people with children. if my 18-month old would have had his head in the way the door would have smashed it hard. honda needs to take a close look at these to ensure that they are operating correctly. we decided it was too much risk, so we got rid of the van and bought a toyota sienna without power doors. *ak

Power sliding doors reverse themselves the first time anything gets in their path. if you stop the door and attempt to close it a second time the doors will not stop closing. the door closed on my husbands fingers the other week at the car dealership. we are looking to buy a honda odyssey, but are thinking twice because of this issue. i am concerned that a child could get hurt pretty bad by the power of this closing door. the salesman told us that you cannot try to close the door a second time without waiting for a least 1 whole minute, because the mechanism needs to reset itself. if children are getting in and out of the door it is hard to say that they would not wait the full 1 minute and that someone might be in the way of the sliding door. *ak

Electric sliding power doors do not rebound when encountering obstacle. should a person inadvertantly get in the way of a closing door, the motor will exert tremendous force on individual, likely causing injury. the owners manual suggests pressing the open button on the remote key ring or the dash board. in the case of a small child entering/exiting (which in the case of a mini-van is quite likely), the potential for injury is severe. the manufacturer should have designed an adjustable pressure sensor, over-current senser (similar to garage doors), or other detection device to create a safer door. please investigate.
