PE06007HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)01/24/200605/24/2006FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURE
The population of 116,000 vehicles is an estimate based on american honda motor company (ahm) data identifying original state of sale or delivery.the subject vehicles (sv) utilize light weight coil springs manufactured from high strength steel (hss).if the coating material of a hss spring is breached, corrosive elements (salt) may attack the spring.spring corrosion results in a stress riser and may cause a fracture.depending on the location where the spring breaks, the jagged edge may pierce the tire; a rapid deflation of the tire may occur and can result in a loss of control or crash.sv spring failure mechanics and tire contact likelihood are discussed in an ahm presentation to odi dated april 20th, 2006 (available on odi

When we (family of 4) were backing out of our drive way, at/about 5mph, a loud metallic noise was heard. it appeared to come from under the van, front/left side. we parked the van and looked under the van, everything looked normal. but the noise was quite loud and we knew something was not correct. we drove the van about 50 feet in our cul-de-sac and heard another metallic noise and something fell under the van. when we looked under the van, we found a piece of suspension spring, about 9 inches long. the piece was not rusted or brittle, it looked pretty stong, but appeared to have been suddenly broken/snapped. lucky that it did not happen when we were are on any highway or at a higher speed. later we took van to get, the springs/struts replaced. a google search found out that we were not alone, this seem to have happened lots of other families. a typical website example is below. i could find many more. this looks like a systemic or material problem with these springs and honda must do something so that none would get injured or hurt. http://www.carproblemzoo.com/honda/odyssey/front-suspension-coil-spring-problems.php. *tr

Car began to rumble and vibrate when i pulled into my garage. there was a loud pop noise when engine was shut off and again when i started it the next morning. thought it was an exhaust problem but my right front engine mount was broken and needed to be replaced. after searching online to find out more about engine mounts i found this is a very common issue with the honda odyssey. more than likely, i will be needing the other mounts replaced in the near future. if someone thinks it is an exhaust issue, they may put off having it checked which can put stress on the other mounts. seems to me with the frequency of this happening to this model car, it should become a recall issue. can be a definite safety hazard if several of the mounts break at the same time. *tr

Car pulls to the right at high way speeds. most of the honda honda odysseys have the same prblem. you have to hold the steering wheel very tight to keep the car going in a straight line. this makes driving the car difficult especially for women. it also creates danger on the highway. service department of the dealer could not fix the problem. they said tey contacted honda and honda does not have a solution either. *ak

The van vibrates at highway speed (above 65 mph), the steering wheel vibrates severe enough to be seen with eyes. dealer states that all honda odyssey lxs all have same problem - therefore they will not repair. this is a safety issue, i believe. you must investigate to force honda to replace defective part or change their design so the van would not vibrate at highway speeds. *ak( dot number: tire size: p215/65r16 )

Smelled burning rubber when driving my 2000 honda odyssey. also heard rubbing and popping sounds. found both front coil springs had broken. abs light also stays on and won't go off. both springs broke in same place....making me think there was a defect in these springs.

From week of purchase, front end has vibrated vigorously at 65+ mph. dealer was unable to align properly. after second visit, dealer said problem could not be fixed. i had to replace original tires at 18,000 miles due to excessive wear. i'm concerned about continued excessive tire wear, and wonder if vibrations will eventually result in other component failure. *ak

My wife experienced a castrophic failure of the right front susspension. the wheel buckeled under the car after the suspension broke. she was traveling at 30mph at the time of the failure. honda did not interview her or the police officer to get any information related to the failure. they looked at the car in the shop and said my wife hit something to cause the failure. both she and the police officer disagree with their assessment. i am disapointed that honda was not interested in talking with my wife about the failure and placing blame on her for this failure. it could have been much more drastic if she had been traveling at higher speeds. *ak

This problem has happened for several months. alignment by dealer did not solve problem. when turning either direction it either goes approx 45 degree angle or so left or right into curb/side of road, does not return to center of road like it should without holding onto steering wheel very hard and agressively controlling it. it also will veer to the right when driving down the road--even in far left lane--if i direct it left it always veers to the right. doesn't matter which road i'm on, if i try to lightly have my hands on the wheel which is normal for most vehicles it drifts into the side of the road/curb. my other vehicle, nor my husban'ds vehicle does not do this. it has a severe drift to the right, goes into curb if i don't agressively control when making turns. this has happened for 4 months, took it in, they realigned and it did not solve the problem. continues to do this. my hands have to be on the wheel very hard to control this vehicle from going into the curb/drifting to the right while driving. i have never had a vehicle do this. obviously a defect in steering, suspension, or something else. i have michelin tires and aluminum wheels. many other people have reported this same problem on edmunds.com odyssey problems, so i am not the only one who's odyssey has this safety problem. as far as failure date/how many failures, it has done this for at least 4 months, every time i drive. thank you. *ak

While driving down the road (route 20, traveling east, down town northborough, ma, speed ~20 mph) as vehicle passed over a railroad expansion type joint, the left front coil spring broke. approximately .5 to 1 second after loud metallic noise abs light came on. pulled car over to side of road and could not find anything obviously wrong, continued home cautiously ~ 1/2 mile. upon further investigation found a piece of the broken coil spring hanging down from the left front half shaft. disassembly of the front left wheel allowed for the evaluation of the damage caused by the broken coil spring. it became clear that the broken piece of coil spring had struck the abs wheel sensor line, ripped the left front outboard cv joint boot and wrapped itself around the half shaft. i felt lucky in knowing that the brake line that was ~ 2 inches to the left of the abs sensor appeared undamaged. had the very sharp broken piece from the damaged spring hit either the brake line or the tire at highway speed it could have caused a catastrophic brake failure or a tire blow out. had the vehicle continued to have been driven with the sharp broken piece of coil spring wrapped around the half shaft it could have caused additional damage, most likely a cut brake line. in talking with honda customer service they felt there was / is no issue (even though i raised the issue of safety), yet my own research has shown that the coil spring on the odyssey has been investigated in the past with no finding and many failures are documented across the internet. replacement of the coil spring, strut, abs wheel speed sensor, and cv joint boot are required to fix the problem. since a spring failure from the left side has occurred, the spring along with strut on the right side will be replaced as a pre-caution. i have both pieces of the broken coil spring in my possession, my initial investigation does not point to corrosion as the likely cause of the spring failure. *tr

For no apparent reason the drivers side front coil spring let go from whatever holds the spring in place. the left front collapsed . the spring ripped the side wall of the inside of the tire causing it to blowout. damage was also done to the a.b.s. cable .this occurred at 78000 miles to a 2000 odyssey. i replaced the front springs and struts and will have to get brake work done as a result of this scary situation. i bought this car new in august of 2000. *nm

 1. cold weather or none 2. driver side front strut spring broke traveling down the strut and wrapping through the abs line (no line damage, but potential abs line failure present) pressing against the tire (resulting in a burned rubber smell and potential tire failure). 3. front spring replaced, bearing replaced, rubber replaced. (old parts are available - also have photo of failure in place on vehicle). *jb

I have a 2000 honda odyssey minivan with 52k miles on it and the coil spring around the strut of one of the wheels snapped while driving on a flat road. there was no trauma that made it snap. i was told that if that had happened while we were going 55 mph on the highway, i would have been in real trouble. i don't think that the coil should have snapped at 52k miles. it's going to cost more than $900 to fix. *nm
