While driving down a main street at approximately 45 mph, the engine revved up and the car felt like it had stalled, but with the engine running... i was able to continue for a short distance at increasingly slower speeds. once at the traffic light, i cut the car off and back on, it helped me to move forward up to about 30 mph for about 2 minutes, turned on and off at every chance until i was able to make it back into my neighborhood, than i tried to cut off and see if reverse would work and it did nothing, i cut off one last time and back on and was able to finally pull the car into the driveway.

I purchased our 2001 odyssey van in november of 2000. i used the van only in the city with low mileage about 83,300 miles. recentlly, i had my check engine light go on, and sometimes the tcs light to go on and d4 light flashing. i felt the van was slipping in/out of gear and not under control. i had my local mechanic checked the van and told me that is the problem with the transmissions and probably need a whole new transmission. after researching honda complaints for 2001 odysseys there is definitely a design problem with transmissions.

2001 honda odyssey. consumer states problem with transmission *tgw the consumer stated according to the honda owner link website there is an automatic transmission recall for the odyssey minivans. when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and mentioned the recall, they didn't respond. they just diagnosed the problems as a slipping transmission, a new ecu was needed, the front and rear mounts were broken and the right front and left rear struts needed to be replaced. the consumer took the vehicle to an independent shop and they concluded the transmission was indeed failing. the recommendation was replacement or a complete overhaul. *jb

The 2001 honda odyssey started having problems of stalling while driving on 01/15/10. when the problem occurred again on 01/20/10, we brought it to a honda dealer for examination. the dealer had it for nine days until 01/29/10 but was unable to make a diagnosis. on 01/29/10, we took the vehicle back. on 02/03/10 and 02/04/10, the stalling recurred so we brought it back to the same dealer. now, having been unsuccessful to make a diagnosis, the dealer notified us that they would not make any more attempts to repair the vehicle. *jb

In april 2009, my check engine light(cel) came on while driving and the car stalled when i stopped. it restarted and would repeat this with each stop. i took it to my usual garage (the light went off on the way there!) and they said the only code that come up was p0172 for rich fuel, they put fuel injector cleaner in the gas and it drove fine--which it does with the engine light off. in may, the car 's cel was still sporadically coming on and stalling, and i called the 800# for honda customer service and spoke with a riano. when i told him of my car's symptoms and asked if there were any known problems going on or recalls about this he said no, and to just take it to the dealer for a check. as the light was off at that point and what i'd gone through at the other garage i decided to wait until the light was on. on july 20th, i was surfing the internet for solutions to this problem and found the dot site which mentioned the egr valve problem and the extended warranty of 8 yrs and 80,000 miles for replacement by honda. my mileage had just passed 80,000 that weekend. i called the 800# for honda and spoke with a brian who stated that my car had been made june 26, 2001 and it was too late for me to be covered under the warranty extension. i took it to bill page honda in falls church, va, (cel still off at this time) , they said it was the egr valve plus a third pressure switch. if i'd been told of the egr problem in may when i asked riano i would have taken the car in then and been well under the time and mileage for the replacement. i feel they owe me the $835.70 for repairs as they lied by omission. thank you for any help in this matter. *tr

6.coolant system continued from odi #760344. this left splash shield loose, vibrating & at risk of coming off, causing risk of accident/injury. is it possible to require that honda service personnel attend additional in service training on automobile coolant systems? so that consumers are not exposed to preventable hazards, examples being: breathing coolant fumes, injuries from engine overheating, slippery surfaces & environmental dangers to underground water supplies from coolant run off. 7. right/left sliding doors-right/left sliding doors fail to open upon pulling of handles as designed. three times our vehicle was returned to dealership for above complaint, after service bulletin 00-0091 was issued before repair was completed as per bulletin. i have spoken with a number of other honda lx owners who stted they have same problem with being unable to open the sliding doors. when they took vehicles to dealership door seals were lubricated, but problem continues to exist. this is a safety issue as these vehicles are used to transport children to & from school and because the sliding door won't open, children must enter area of traffic flow to enter vehicle, increasing risk of injury. sliding doors can & will oen while vehicle is in motiion, due to inability to fully open/close sliding doors via handles as designed. 8.transmission-i complained of grinding noise when vehicle accelerates from 40to50mph. rpm's go up to 2000 upon acceleration, after reaching 50mph, rpm's drop to between1500 to 1700 and grinding is heard. explained to dealership numerous times & test drove with service advisor, was told he heard nothing & vehicle was operating as designed. after final repair/vehicle defect notification inspection/repair was performed, vehicle continues to have grinding noise at 50mph & was returned to us with tranmission shifter inoperable in d3, 2nd & 1st drive gears. we are notifying you of what we feel are the dangerous conditions in which our vehicle is in.

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the check engine and traction control system lights remained illuminated after the vehicle was started. the mechanic stated that there was an egr valve failure. the contact received a recall notice in 2005 for the egr valve. at the time of the recall, the check engine light was not illuminated and the dealer stated they would only check it if the light was illuminated. the recall was good for 80,000 miles or eight years. currently, the dealer has refused to repair the vehicle due to its mileage. the nhtsa recall # was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 95,000.

I took my 2001 honda odyssey mini van to kuhn honda in tampa, fl for routine maintenance and was told by the service dept that the passenger's side and front engine mounts were broken and needed to be replaced. the van had only 51,880 miles on it. i was told that the service department had replaced the same mounts on numerous other odyssey van,s and even the one next to it in the shop needed them. the service manager indicated that honda did not cover this repair under any warranty extension despite what seemed to me to be a clearly defective part that could have grave safety consequences. honda should issue a recall and replace these engine mounts as their failure can cause hesitation during acceleration and other drive-train related problems. *ak

Vehicle fire while engine was turned off and parked.*mr the consumer had backed his car into the parking spot, and the tail pipe was jammed into the mulch. the blocking of the tailpipe caused the heat of the exhaust to start the mulch on fire spreading to the plastic bumper of the car and into the car. after the accident occurred it came to the consumer attention that the tail pipe was defective and the dealership should pay for all expenses and repairs made as a result. *cb

After getting our 30000 miles maintenance completed which included (but not limited to) an oil change and replacement of the transmission fluid, we started noticing a hesitation in the car when the accelerator was depressed. when the transmission fluid was replaced, it took longer than expected thus i assumed that there may have been a problem with the transmission. we took it back to the service center to have them assess the situation and they found that two of the engine mounts were broken. the car only has 34k miles on it. it seems premature that something like this would happen, therefore, i feel it necessary to bring this to your attention to address the safety of this part (the engine mounts).*ak

2001 honda odyssey transmission failure at about 100,000 miles of routine driving on a vehicle that was held to a better than average maintenance schedule. honda issued a recall, but did not inform me of its existence, despite the fact that i regularly visited a certified honda dealer for service, and now the vehicle is out of the recall's time/mileage parameters.

The check engine light came on (a $1,500 repair) for the catalytic converter replacement and the transmission had to be replaced (at 93k). apparently these are both increasingly common problems in this model. it's hard to believe that my van carries the honda name. then i started googling and found many sites reporting the same horror stories here i realized that many of these vehicles were manufactured with faulty parts and may be a lemons as well? the prospect to paying $100 every time the check engine light turns on is not a pleasant one. vehicles built today should not require transmissions & emission converter at a mere 93,000 miles. i have been very disappointed with the reliability of my honda odyssey. the brand is considered highly reputable and has a price premium (and supposedly a resale value) to match - but my experience with the odyssey has been one of repeated mechanical break downs and poor performance as many owner have written and blogged. i feel helpless and know honda is powerful corporation who will do nothing ... we need your help to protect consumers of these practices. thank you for your time. *tr
