Transmission started slipping and would not go in to gear. went in and out of slipping gears. shifted down to drive 2 and drive 1 to see if that would improve the slipping, but it did not. when shifting into gear, loud noise heard as well. the transmission was replaced by the local honda dealership in 2008 at 108,000 due to an extension of the warranty which resulted from a 2006 class action lawsuit. i called the honda dealership who replaced the transmission the first time and they informed me that the warranty on the 2nd transmission had expired because it was over the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. as a result of this issue, i had to buy another vehicle so that i could get back and forth to work. i had to rely on others to get me to work and back home for several days while looking for another vehicle. my honda odyssey is still sitting at my work parking lot because i am afraid if i try to drive it, it will strand me in traffic and cause an accident etc.

The transmission stopped working so the van stopped moving. any pressure on the gas paddle was like revving in neutral. after stopping the van for about a min and restarting, was able to engage the drive but it would fail after moving about 50 yards. some research on the internet shows this seems to be a common problem with these models. the transmission on this vehicle was replaced a few years back.

Transmission slips when shifting gears. honda says they won't fix the problem because they were aware of the problem and offered an extended 109,000 mile or 7 year warranty and my car is beyond this warranty coverage. the transmission problem will cost between about $3,000 for a rebuilt transmission or over $5,000 for a new one. the car is only worth about $5,000 if the transmission didn't have a problem now much less with this problem probably only about $1-2,000. there is a website here dedicated to this exact problem for honda odysseys with many frustrated honda owners: http://www.odysseytransmission.com/.

I bought a 2001 honda odyssey in aug 2001 and in june 2009 the check engine light came on at 98000 miles. took it to willis honda (the dealer i bought the car from ) and they said the transmission had to be replaced (within extended warranty (93 months & 109000 miles) on miles and 2 months outside the extended warranty on months. honda agreed to foot half the cost ($1200) as a one time goodwill. now it is 145000 miles and this winter since january (i live in nj) i notice that when it is cold and the engine is cold and i start driving without warming up around 20-25 mph the engine revs (possibly because the gear shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd doesn't happen smoothly). took it to the willis honda who had installed the replacement transmission in june 2009 (36 month/36000 mile warranty). it is now little over 43 months and around 47000 miles on this transmission. they say that the transmission is slipping and will have to be replaced ($5500) and that replacing the fluid/flushing the transmission would not do anything. are transmissions expected to last only 47000 miles. i think honda is selling bad equipment.

Experienced initial transmission failure as erratic shifting, slipping, whining, and flashing d light. transmission was replaced by honda. currently, at 118,000 miles, the remanufactured transmission is failing. this is 42, 000 miles and 4 years after it was replaced. honda says that there is nothing they can do to help with another replacement. after speaking to a few transmission techs, they have told me that there is a design flaw in the placement and material of the transmission filter which causes the failures.

Transmission slams into gear and the d4 flashes and the tcs light and engine light are on constantly- was told we needed a new transmission. did research on it and called honda and they said that there are no recalls on this but it had an extended warranty that ended before i purchased it- as i am 2nd owner of vehichle. all other maintenance has been done on time or early i had it a year before the transmission started to do this. the honda dealer tried to talk me into trading it in for a newer model for less payments than i was making on but i own it out right bought from them! they knew something was wrong with transmission and keep selling them!!!!

Driving to school about 25 mph, the tsc light and check engine light came on and p4 transmission light started to flash. the transmission would not shift into a higher gear. i tried to limp it back home and the transmission would not go forward. i had to drive in reverse one block to get it home. i plugged in my engine scan tool and it was reading a p0730 code. i called my mechanic and discussed it with him. his database indicates major transmission problems with odysseys and that the resolution to this problem is a new transmission.

Transmission slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear with abrupt change at 3rd gear. this is a sign of premature transmission wear that we have been fortunate not to have yet experienced that many owners of this type of vehicle have had. we are the original owners of the vehicle and it has been carefully maintained with all of the required maintenance items. we are surprised that this problem has not been the subject of a recall. *tr

Started getting check engine light. went to dealer and the diagnostic came with a transmission problem. honda has a recall on the transmission issue as it seems like a known problem but they refuse to accept the fact that my vehicle would be part of the recall and have refused any financial assistance. the cost is approximately $5328. *tr

While highway driving, the engine light came on. lowered driving speed and continued driving to destination. took van into a foreign auto repair shop. after checking the van using computer, i was told that there was a problem with the transmission. i would be able to travel home and encouraged to have the transmission looked at as soon as i returned. . returned the van to honda dealer and was told that the repair/replacement of transmission would cost $6,000. took van to an independent repair shop for transmission overhaul cost; $ 2,250.

The engine & tcs light went on. per the dealership perry motors .. all was ok - they changed the transmission fluid and said all was ok .. at 81,092 mile the tcs ligh & engine light went on again.. this time the transmission was slipping & we had to have it rebuilt- i tried going to the honda dealership for help (weir canyon honda)-they sent me to a transmission shop (less cost)where we had it rebuilt gave us a 2 yr warranty or 24,000 miles... at 91,000 miles the transmission went out again (unfortunately the shop where we had it repaired went out of business) so now it is being rebuilt at a cost of another cost of $3,000.00- $3,500.00 .. i tried calling honda for assistance but was told there was nothing they could do ..

When my daughter discovered the transmission in the indicated vehicle could fail at any time she elected to stop driving the vehicle. this model was one of many by honda that was subject to undisclosed failure type but it can be assumed that failure could include lockup, loss of power to the wheels, etc.. honda elected to extend the warranty but honda usa and the dealer (honda of middletown, ny) state there was no recall as this is not a safety issue. we beg to differ in that having your wheels lock up at normal driving speeds, especially in traffic including interstate highways constitutes a serious safety issue as does loss of power in congested traffic at highway speeds. a class action suit was won by consumers in a class action suit and notices were sent to owners of these vehicles. the dealer did not notify my daughter, son-in-law or myself when we purchased this vehicle in 2007. the dealership and honda are refusing to fix this issue as the vehicle is past the extended warranty and again both claim this is not a safety issue. internet research suggests there was an attempt to cover up this issue to prevent harm to the honda reputation, multiple examples of the transmission failing and of course the denial that a transmission failure represents a safety issue, under any circumstance. we are in the process of attempting to get the car fixed as they have 3 young children, an income just above poverty level for the family size and no resources to pay for this expensive repair that must be made to make their vehicle roadworthy. *tr

My wife was driving our 2001 honda odyssey 2 hours from home on 07/06/2012 at 9pm at approximately 55 mph when the transmission (torque converter) stopped working and forced my wife to barely get off a major highway without avoiding an accident. she was forced to call 911 and request sc highway patrol to assist her in getting her van off the road safely. this is our 3rd, yes 3rd transmission that has failed. honda knows they have an unsafe and known defect and continue to do nothing to help remedy the problem. the nhtsa needs to hold honda accountable for this safety hazard. *tr

While driving down a main street at approximately 45 mph, the engine revved up and the car felt like it had stalled, but with the engine running... i was able to continue for a short distance at increasingly slower speeds. once at the traffic light, i cut the car off and back on, it helped me to move forward up to about 30 mph for about 2 minutes, turned on and off at every chance until i was able to make it back into my neighborhood, than i tried to cut off and see if reverse would work and it did nothing, i cut off one last time and back on and was able to finally pull the car into the driveway.

My 20 year old son was driving home alone when suddenly engine was revving but car would not shift. since then we cannot take car over 30mph and as soon as it has been driving for more than a few minutes the transmission seems to overheat. the check engine and traction control lights come on and the gear indicator d4 starts flashing red. although honda put an extended warranty on the transmission for 7 yrs or 100,000 miles when i called them i was told too bad, the car is too old.

We were going from nyc to nc and the engine started racing but the vehicle was not going anywhere... we started seeing smoke in the rear view and started smelling transmission fluid... we pulled off and was able to continue going to the destination but could go no further after that.. we had to get a rental back home and the car is still in nc... and this is the rebuilt transmission that the dealer install after the recall....

At around 120k our odyssey would occasionally have a funny shift where it clunked a bit. this happened only occasionally. the symptoms would mysteriously go away when the car was at the dealer or in the shop. with 149k, while driving at 65mph the transmission abruptly downshifted into second gear causing the speed to be quickly reduced without the breaks being applied, creating an unsafe and inoperable vehicle. the biggest problem is that it happens without warning. you are driving normally, then out of nowhere your car's transmission downshifts to a low gear.

The honda odyssey & prelude transmissions have experienced many early (and late) failures due to higher than normal problems due to defects in material or workmanship. (higher than normal defects due to workmanship in material... are exactly the words used in the warranty extension noticed i received a few years ago. the warranty was extended to 7 years or 100,000 miles however many customers like me are conservative drivers, not pushing their vehicles to extremes, so failures often occur after the extended warranty. i called honda to ask for assistance (discount or whatever) however they have declined. case numbers n0320112-05-02-00029 & n012012-05-02-00040. i would like to file a complaint and ask for assistance getting honda to own up to the issue beyond a simple warranty extension and assist with repair expenses at a honda dealership.

2001 honda odyssey automatic transmission failure on 3 separate occasions as follows: first transmission failure on 20 may 2003 at 37,531 miles. second transmission failure on 14 may 2007 at 119,849 miles. third transmission failure on 23 april 2012 at 193,820 miles. these failures are due to a defect in the material or workmanship of the transmission for this vehicle as acknowledged by the american honda motor company in their letter titled automatic transmission n warranty extension in the winter of 2002. the transmission was replaced with honda financial assistance for the first and second transmission failures; however honda will no longer provide assistance in the case of the third transmission failure. the failure of this transmission on the open road will cause the vehicle to come to a stop. the latter condition is hazardous on roads with heavy traffic and high road speeds. your assistance is requested to encourage honda to fix this defective transmission.

My husband and i bought a used 2001 odyssey with 104,000 miles. within a month the transmission began to slip. we looked on line and saw that the transmission for this year was on recall. we took it to the dealership who informed us that we had exceeded the recall limit by 3000 miles (we were then at 118,000). we could have a rebuilt transmission installed for $4000. we told them that was insane considering it was only a 3000 mile discrepancy for the recall.....they shrugged. we took it to aamco, who rebuilt it for $2600, a substantial savings. however, here we are, two years later and it goes again....suddenly! i was driving in tampa rush hour traffic with my two children in the car, when my tcs light comes on, and my d4 starts flashing. i felt the transmission drop when i pulled to a stop at the light. when i began to go again, it barely crawled, though registering 2500 rpm. i stopped at an auto parts store, whose computer read various codes: driveshaft, o2 sensor, solanoid, and two others which he said were transmission related. so i begin to drive the car to aamco which is 1 mile away. i had to make a u-turn, and two lefts with the car barely moving with both of my children in the car. i get to aamco, and he tells me that i passed my warranty with him 7000 miles ago and i'm out of luck. so i dangerously chug this thing and my children home, hoping we make it. we did, but now what?

The transmission first failed while my wife was driving on the freeway with my 4 children as passengers. the car started shifting irradically and becoming very unpredictable and put her in a very dangerous situation in traffic. honda replaced the failed transmission under warranty but did nothing to prevent what was to come. now on 2/25/12 at 108622 miles, the second transmission failed again while she was driving it started shifting to a neutral state between gears and jumping from one gear to another and emitting a loud whining noise. again, a very unpredictable behavior on the road with my children in the car. this time there is hassle coming from honda to honor a replacement. i also fear that the replacement won't be performed with a corrected unit as per my previous experience. this is an unacceptable safety issue knowing that this vehicle could fail at any time on the road.
02/21/2012101000
The transmission began slipping between the 2nd and 3rd gears. the vehicle would slowly move forward with very little apparent thrust then would sudenly kick into the next gear and lurch forward, then slowly move into the next gear. also the tcs light came on and stayed on and the green drive (d) indicator began to flash. this problem is primarily with the drive gear and not so much the reverse gear. the check egine light came on two weeks ago and has remained on. an obd code reader on 22 feb 2012 indicated 3 different fault codes -2 generic and 1 manufacturer- with the majority of explanations indicating specific transmission faults and one- a tcc code -electrical.

2001 honda odyssey transmission failed march 19, 2007 at 80,726 miles for the first time. replaced by honda under class-action lawsuit warranty. the replacement unit failed at 137,084 miles on january 02, 2012. thus the warranty replacement unit lasted only 56,358 miles which is substantially less than the original unit. called honda january 05, 2012 and asked if they could pay for the transmission and i'd pay for the labor and shop supplies. honda rejected the request and said they were unable to assist. not sure it was it was ever the intention of the court in finalizing the class action law suit that failure of the replacement units would follow in such short order. it's unreasonable to expect that a warranty replacement unit should last less that the 109,000 miles the court agreed to. honda customer care reference number 012-012-0500412.

While driving down the road the transmisson went out. without any warning besides that morning it had a problem shifting into 2 gear. the vehicle had a new transmisson put in 70,000 miles prior to this happening. but, it was very dangerous, just driving down the highway and it jerking down to 0mph and not even being able to get it to move off the highway, wouldn't go into any gear.
12/14/2011207000
Before my transmission overhaul, my odyssey would slip gears and make a thump sound upon initial acceleration and subsequent increases in speed. the check engine and tcs lights would come on and stay lit. after the overhaul, i found out there were bulletins out on parts that were defective and with replacement transmissions additional cooling and filters had to be replaced, as well as additional changes. a year after the overhaul, started having the same slippage and sounds from the transmission again. this time, while on the highway traveling at 70mph, my back window gets covered up by an oily discolored substance. it was to the point i could not see out the rear window. the smell of burned rubber or tar was coming through the vent and the a/c or heat was not on. my rpm needle started shifting up from 3 to 5 and bouncing back between them, then down to 2 and then finally back to 3....with no change in speed. the check engine light and tcs lights come on and stay lit. my brakes tended to be a little soft then a little hard. called a mechanic that i knew was available and worked on transmissions and asked him what to do and he said get off the road fast and check your fluid levels. my odyssey had spit out all the transmission fluid and some oil throughout the engine, underneath and back on the driver's side rear tire area. if it had not been for the fact that i was extremely familiar with my van (single owner) and paid attention to the last problems i had, i might have locked up in the middle of a busy highway with my children in the car and may not have lived to see another day.

Transmittion failure, honda has a history of failures of this kind with the 2001odyessy. item should be recalled at the expense of the manufacturer.

Vehicle is currently in need of its 3rd replacement transmission. 1st failure at 81668 miles in december of 2004, 2nd failure at 125840 miles in july of 2006, 3rd failure at 181000 miles in november of 2011. all replacement transmissions were from honda and replaced at a honda dealer. last transmission failed at only 54,000. was assured by dealer service tech and honda that with the last transmission all problems were corrected before i purchased the vehicle used with 154,000 miles in june of 2010. now honda customer service claims 54,000 miles is good amount to get out of a transmission and can offer no warranty beyond the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty with a replacement part.

While driving up a narrow, twisty mountain road, transmission failed, rendering car unable to move forward and, despite application of power, car started rolling backward down slope. was able to find a crossroad to back into to get car out of the flow of traffic. this is the fifth transmission failure in this car in 150,000 miles. all of the failures have occurred in traffic, creating a safety hazard.
03/21/200783000
Transmission has failed 3 times while vehicle was in use. failures occured at 83,000 miles (2007), 117,000 miles (2010) and 135,000 miles (2011). accidents were avoided in all three cases, but could easily have occurred as car was in highway use surrounded by other cars/ trucks when transmission locked up. honda has not reimbursed any of these failures and in the first instance told vehicle owner that car was outside of warranty period, even though (we recently discovered) there had been an extension on the transmission warranty period to 109,000 miles and car was only at 83,000 miles at that time. transmission is currently only 7,000 miles from last transmission replacement and is exhibiting gear changing problems currently. vehicle owner is reluctant to sell vehicle along to another owner, knowing of the potential safety issue should the transmission fail for a fourth time. honda should recall these 2001 vehicles, as they did for 2002-2004 models. there is no rationale for having excluded the 2001 year. they are not safe to drive.

2001--only 63000 miles. driving down a city street early october when i notice the tcs light and d3 indicator light flshing and the check engine light on. could no longer accelerate, van would move only very very slowly. had it towed to local honda dealer. they diagnosed it as a tranny failure, replacement would cost $5300. did the dance with service rep, etc. got american honda involved, had to ask, offered replacement for $4320. told them no thanks, will never buy a honda again (unless they own this) and will discourage anyone else from doing so. they were actually going to charge me $80 for giving me the diagnosis that i now owned an $8200 paper weight! when i objected, they relented. about the only good thing i can say about the service reps effort and keeping me as a happy honda consumer. took it to an approved jasper transmission installer and had them put in the recommended jasper replacement (why in the world would i want the same product from honda again?) total bill just under $4k. we obviously don't drive our van much, but so far it is running perfectly. jasper comes with 3yr/100,000mi warranty. i just discovered tonight that there is now a class-action lawsuit filed. unfortunately it seems to cover only 2005/06 modely years. you can bet i will be contacting them to see if the suit can be expanded to additional years. there is also an occupy honda facebook page! it is simply reprehensible that honda is acting this way and they ought to be held accountable.

5/28/05 first transmission replaced under warranty on 06/03/05 10/12/07 second transmission replaced under warranty 10/15/07 with 87,344 miles 11/14/11 third transmission not replaced with 166,230 miles all times incident occurred while driving. two times while on highway and car stopped working and towed to honda dealer. 1st incidence serviced at maine mall motors s. portland, me. 2nd and 3rd incidences dealt with executive honda wallingford, ct. american honda refuses to take any responsibility with defective transmission. four transmissions in a vehicle is excessive. even with my 166k+ mileage, car has been maintained well. believe defective and excessive replacement of my transmissions is unreasonable and is honda's responsibility to replace my transmission. never have had failure with transmission in previously owned vehicles even with high mileage. honda is taking advantage of consumers who pay good $$$ for below average workmanship and quality. i believe this transmission problem is deeper.

While driving, the transmission suddenly failed. instead of speeding up, the vehicle slowed. luckily i was not in the middle of an intersection and no one was behind me. this is very dangerous situation and could have caused an accident.

Original transmission failed at 76,000 miles in october 2008. honda replaced transmission but only provided 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. the replaced transmission failed after only 28,000 miles and 33 months. at 104,000 miles, began noticing shifting problems on or about july 8, 2011. brought odyssey to honda dealership in white plians ny for evaluation. honda dealership advised the transmission needed to be replaced again and it was not a covered repair. clearly transmission should have a life span of more than 28,000 miles. letter sent to honda requesting replacement. honda motors refused to cover replacement of transmission.
10/13/2011105000
We took our 2001 honda odyssey to the dealership this morning due to a service engine light. we were informed that the engine light and subsequent code meant that the transmission would need to be replaced - again. this will be the third transmission in the vehicle. the last transmission was replaced at 84k miles. the vehicle currently has 105k miles. we beleive a transmission should last more than 21k miles, but the extended warranty on the powertrain has expired and the manufacturer and the dealership has indicated that it is now out of warranty. the transmission issues with the honda odyssey is widespread and well documented on the internet, by the manufacturer itself and by the thousands of dealers that have fixed the problems over the years. i beleive this to be a major safety issue. it warrants another recall and permanent fix by the manufacturer. this style of vehicle is used to transport families and is not used for towing or offroad purposes. honda corporation of america should pay or reimburse consumers for this obvious manufacturing defect and safety issue on their product.

Honda dealership (hoen honda/ poway honda) knowingly installed defective rebuilt transmissions (3 times) on my honda odyssey 2001. the transmission failed all three times !! these transmissions are defective and it is not a matter of if it is a matter of when they fail. recently, my wife was stranded in rush hour traffic with her elderly parents. luckily, she got out of car and redirected traffic. honda charged me $4700 to replace their defective rebuilt transmission. honda and their dealerships are very aware of the defective transmissions they install and are not willing to stand-by their products. i would like nhtsa to kind investigate the safety of the the defective rebuilt transmission that are being installed by honda.

2006: notified by honda corp that our vehicle may have a defective transmission took to sim fryson honda, winchester avenue, ashland, ky for evaluation - determined to be part of recall.and transmission was replaced due to torque converter solenoid malfunction, however, . vehicle shifted hard and a made a whirring noise. we advised the dealer of this on at least 3 occassions but were told that it was replaced with an honda part as instructed by honda. this dealership was sold and the subsequent owner filed for bankruptcy and would not listen to our complaints. during the fall, 2010 we noticed the car was beginning to shift even more harder and seemed to stall before going into gear but ironically when the weather was warmer it would behave okay. however, in january 2011 it would not initially go into gear and we thought it was the gear shifting lever that was perhaps out of sync and took it to moses honda, rt. 60, huntington, wv since the other dealer was out of business. moses tested the vehcile and found nothing wrong, however, it continued to off and on behave the same way. we again had moses to test it in march/april 2011 and was told then that the transmission was failing. we contacted the ashland kentucky dealership (now reopened) and was told the warranty had expired in january and to contact honda for additional info. we have attempted to speak with honda several times and will not discuss nor return calls to us. this is a known problem, having researched the issue, and honda refuses to acknowledge their repsonsibility in r&d of defective and poorly designed parts. i am requesting full consideration of this problem for all honda owners that have experienced this problem and for honda to address the issue.

The transmission has failed yet again on the 2001 odyssey van. we called honda us to take care of the problem. honda's only reply is that the warranty is expired and that they are not required to do anything additionally. we appealled to honda on several fronts, inclcuding the poor design, history of the van being unavailable, lost vacation as we were actually driving to a destination one time that it failed, and most importantly, safety. we requested that honda take care of this problem once and for all even though the mileage is higher because of the overall customer disruption, poor design, faulty manufacturing, time without use of the vehicle (throughout its life and this time as well), expense over time, and most importantly safety... the agent hung up on me even though i was stating my case in a respectful manner. he got agitated when i asked to speak with a representative with more decision authority. he indicated that it does not matter who i talk to- even the president of honda us would not make a different decision. we are extremely disappointed and facing yet another costly repair and car rental that we cannot really afford. in the last day, my family has incurrred expenses of (order incurred) $99 diagnotic fee from a honda dealership, $70 initial diagnostic from a tranmission rebuilder shop, $70 rental car through the weekend, and the rebuilder just called to have me authorize any $865 to get inside the transmission. so far the total is $1,104 and the car is not operational. given the poor design, faulty manufacturing, and safety of this unit, we respectfully ask that honda be compelled to take full responsibility for all out of pocket expense incurred associated with the failure of the transmission.

The honda odessey transmission failed, my mother with alzheimers was in the car with us, the car is very unsafe, we are the orginal owners and are putting in a fourth transmission in our 2001 honda odessey which we gave to our daughter who is a singel mom of four children, we had faith in honda and now wish we had sold the odessey after we replaced the transmission the first time.

The van at times seemed to be sluggish when changing gears. also the engine check light came on and so i had it tested by auto zone and they indicated it was transmission failure. this occurred at about 85,000 miles. i had the readout checked again by a certified honda mechanic and he said yes the transmission is failing. early on i had been told about honda odyssey's and their transmission failures and so i changed the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. i kept driving the van and at about 98,000 miles the engine light was coming on more often. this was in 2010 at the time the government program cash for clunkers. so i thought i would cut my losses and get at least $4500 for the van which i did on a trade in for a civic. to my surprise the dealership put the van on the lot and sold it for about $6,500 maybe more. so now some poor buyer is going to have to put a replacement transmission which will cost 4,000 to 6,000. just out of curiosity i looked at reports from 2001 through 2006 on mycarstats.com and have discovered that honda still hasn't corrected their transmission problems.

Honda odyssey with 4 failed transmissions in less than 95,000 miles. honda paid for the first 2 replacements but required us to pay 50% of the cost of the 4th transmission despite the car's history. i have read that under the terms of the class-action settlement, honda should have covered this up to 109,000 miles. their customer service personnel are highly trained to avoid paying anything. they routinely won't return calls, are rude and obnoxious in the hopes that customers won't bother them. this is by design and honda should be held accountable for this. they are not acting in accordance with the terms of the settlement.

We purchased the 2001 honda odyssey with 70,382 miles on the odometer in may 2007 from a dealer. all of the service has been performed at honda dealers except for a couple of oil changes done at jiffy lube. it is difficult for us to accept that the transmission in the honda odyssey would fail after 4 years and 30,000 miles. the car is driven by two retired people that are in their early 70s. the odyssey has never been used for towing, driven hard or at excessive high speed. it is mainly used to go to the grocery store, going out to eat or visit friends. we have never blown a transmission or engine in any of the other cars that we have owned during the past 50 years.

I purchased the odyssey new and am still the owner. the transmission started to fail under normal use in the range of 60,000 miles and failed completely at 85,000. this was very common and problem that resulted in a lawsuit and free replacement by honda of defective transmissions. however, i am told that my vehicle is too old, regardless of the mileage for honda to offer any help with the cost of the repairs. my complaint is that it is well established that the transmission in these early odysseys was mechanically defective and it should be replaced by honda, at least a substantial portion of the cost of repairs should be shared by honda.

My first transmission failed just at 40k miles. the service engine light came one. was in the hov lane. managed to get off the nearby exit ramp and called the honda dealer. i was able to drive it back home. the dealer said it was under warranty and replaced it. once again at 107k miles the service engine light came on. i had just got the service done and a transmission fluid replaced. it happened within 2 weeks of this service. stalled in the center lane in front of the kids school during peak drop off time. had to call aaa to get it towed to the dealer. it would not move in any gear except reverse. the dealer said it was a transmission failure. also had a oxygen sensor recalled on this one. thank god it was me who was dropping off and was about to leave for office. i get scared even to think if my wife and kids were alone in this one. american honda was the worst. they would not listen. they say we cant do anything. they keep repeating it like a broken record. reading of a script. i have purchased a honda twice. the first time and the last time. stay away from it.

Was driving a 2001 odyssey van on 11/24/2000 and at 8:00 pm on 321 north to blowing rock, north carolina and the transmission failed completely. we were barely able to get the van off the road and were fortunate it occurred where it did because part of that highway has no easy pull-off area. original transmission had been replaced under extended warranty by honda in late 2006.....this transmission that failed was only about 3 years old, had about 60,000 miles on it, and was serviced according to honda guidelines. honda refused to take any responsibility.....i believe the evidence is clear that honda has had transmission defect issues with this vehicle and there is a major safety issue. we have filed an official complaint with better business and with american honda....case number for honda is no12009-11-3--1138. *tr

We own a 2001 honda odyssey. we bought it because we wanted a safe vehicle for driving. in 2006, we drove our van from massachusetts to florida. we took route 81. while driving we began to experience an odd pulling when putting pressing the gas. eventually, the car would barely move. we were being watched by an angel. we were fortunately able to get off the main highway and find a place to look at the car. we were told that the transmission was in need of repair. we were within a few miles of a honda dealer in staunton, va. honda gave us a rental car and we proceeded on our trip to florida, while the car was being repaired. i felt safe. i felt that the issue was taken care of and that the honda would be okay. our van is now at 140,000 miles. we have been planning to drive the car another 30,000 miles and then entertain that idea of another van. today i took my children on a family outing. we were enjoying the fall colors on a 2 lane mountain road. our car began to pull a bit and the next thing i know the car is beginning to not move. by the grace of god, i was able to get the car around the bend of a winding road, but i had to leave it on the highway. i put on the flashers, got my kids out of the car as quick as i could and then quickly crossed the road with them and went to the scenic lookout that was a bit off of this 2 lane road. i did not want to be near my van that completely died on a 2 loan winding mountain road!!!!!!!! thank god i did not have any cars behind me at the time!!!!!!!!!!! i called the police for help. they sent a tow truck right away and then the car was towed to a honda dealer. i do not feel safe in there vehicle. i do not know what to do. i had planned to drive this for at least another year. i am going to look into possibly going against honda legally. i am very upset about this. we could have been involved in a very serious and deadly accident. also, there was no warning light or sound to warn of this problem. *tr

2001 honda odyssey with severe transmission problems. had a new transmission put in at 56,000 miles and now at 114,000 it needs another new transmission. we got stuck 1 1/2 hours from home as the car suddenly would not run - noo warning at all. we keep up with all maintenance. we are in the process of waiting for american honda to call us to see how we can help. because of their winter holiday, we have now had to wait 17 days without the car. *tr

The transmission will not shift out of park and the brake lights don't work from what i believe to be a faulty switch. i have to pump the brakes at least 5-10 times before i can shift out of park, and the brake lights don't always come on when driving a braking. i did a little research online and have found many people with similar problems with their honda odyssey vans and honda accords of approximately the same year. *tr

2001 honda odyssey. consumer writes in regards to transmission problems *tgw the consumer stated while driving, the tcs and check engine light illuminated. a diagnosis revealed torque converter failure. the dealer reset the light. however, about 100 miles later, the light illuminated again. soon after, the d4 indicator light started flashing and there was an extremely slow gear engagement causing the vehicle to downshift. also, the water pump, timing belt and tensioner were replaced. *jb

The transmission in our 2001 odyssey went out for the second time after just 45,000 miles. it was originally repaired by honda under terms of their settlement of a class action lawsuit. but according to the transmission shop we took it to, the repair did not fix the underlying design flaw. it is well known that honda odyssey and other honda transmissions have a design flaw. ours went out on a busy highway as we were traveling a busy highway at about 10 pm. luckily the car briefly recovered and we were able to continue driving but it could have been a very hazardous situation.

My 2001 odyssey transmission first showed signs of failure in sept 2009 (105k mi) while i was traveling through north dakota. i took the van to a honda dealer in minot nd after the check engine light came on. they reset the warning light and said they did not think it was serious but it should be checked when i got home. after returning home i had the transmission fluid changed and was told the problem could be due to a loose gas cap. the check engine light came on several times after that but i did not sense any slippage until sept 2010. i knew it was going but continued driving it until one cold evening when i could barely get the van moving, i had the sense that the trans would not shift to a low gear and was attempting to start out in 3rd gear (115k mi) . honda quoted $7500 to replace the transmission. a local transmission shop rebuilt the transmission for $3200. i was told that corroded terminals on the vehicle computer may have been partially to blame for the transmission failure in that the transmission was not getting the proper signals as to when to shift.

2001 honda odyssey needing 2nd transmission replacement at 118,000 miles after check engine and tcs lights came on while driving. dealership examined car and pulled the code p0740 meaning transmission failure. first transmission replacement at 63,000 miles under extended warranty from honda due to known transmission failure. information regarding extended warranty on first tranmission replacement came from a friend with the same problem, not from honda. honda did not notify us of this problem. now, 3 1/2 years and 55,000 miles later transmission is failing again. american honda has refused to provide any financial assistance with their representative stating, to be frank, honda has had so many claims on this extended warranty and this has affected so many people that honda has no assistance left for this problem.

2001 honda odyssey lx w/towing package transmission failure at 115000mi. honda dealer quoted $7500 to replace, independent transmission repair shop quoted $3000 to rebuild. other than the trans, the only other problem with this van is the digital clock light that went out after 6 years. i was hoping to keep it for another 10 years. what are the chances a rebuilt honda transmission will last 50k miles?

I bought a 2001 honda odyssey and within 5 months of owning it i broke down on the highway. i was driving and all of a sudden the rps went up and down and the van stopped within 60 seconds. i am the second owner and since buying the car this has never happened. i had the car towed to my house and then to a dealer. i was told that it needed a new transmission which would cost between 2100 and 2500.00.

We have a 2001 honda odyssey ex. at 67,000 miles, while still under warranty, i noticed that it seemed to be slow at shifting gears after slowing down. i took it to the dealer and he said that this was normal. now at 101,000, the engine light came on and the slow shifting suddenly got dramatically worse, with the engine revving up before jerking the car as the transmission finally shifts gears. now when we took it to the dealer, out of warranty, we were told that the transmission would need to be replaced because of a transmission torque converter clutch sys. malfunction and the replacement would cost $5000. i'm upset because honda knows that this is a problem with the 2001 model and should dealt with it honestly when we brought the car in under warranty rather than telling me that it was normal and waiting until after 100,000 miles to inform me that the transmission needs replace. we are trying to decide if it is worth the money to replace the transmission.

Both check engine light and tcs are on. when i pressed accelerator, engine is raising but transmission is slipping - gears are slipping. i took my vehicle to dealer. they asked me $3800 for new transmission + $1200 for labour + tax. i have only 108k miles. still under 109k miles warranty. since it is beyond the 93 months warranty, american honda or dealer are not willing to do any help even though the miles are still under the warranty.

2001 honda odyssey mini van. i am the 2nd owner of the minivan. the tcs light came on and the d started blinking. i lost power and it was like in a high gear and would not take off. i about got hit by another vehicle and it would have hurt me and my children. i called honda. they said there was a warranty extention but no recall. i do not know why they would extend the warranty if there was no problem. this is how people get hurt and have accidents. it is terrible that america would allow these vehicles to be on the roads. i paid good money for a dependable vehicle, that is not dependable and the problems are widely known. i just wish i would have found some info out about these vehicles before i bout it. the vehcile barely has 100k.

2001 honda odyssey transmission failure at about 100,000 miles of routine driving on a vehicle that was held to a better than average maintenance schedule. honda issued a recall, but did not inform me of its existence, despite the fact that i regularly visited a certified honda dealer for service, and now the vehicle is out of the recall's time/mileage parameters.

Honda odyssey lx - 2001 model year i had a check engine and a tcs indicator light that came on. took it to an honda authorized mechanic and he said it needs a new transmission. i called honda america customer service and was told that they cannot help. eventhough there is recall with this issue and honda has offered to pay for repair (limited by 7 yrs 9 months or 109k miles). internet search with edmunds and other consume sites indicates this problem is a widespread manufacturing defect and honda is refusing to help pay for repair even if its limited.

We purchased a new 2001 honda odyssey ex-navi from shockley honda in frederick, md. we had transmission related issues and as a result of a voluntary recall by american honda motor company, our transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit in april 2005. the vehicle had approximately 78,000 miles at the time of replacement. we now have 202,000 miles and the vehicle is exhibiting the same shifting problems as before. i called the original dealer and they told me that honda is not offering any goodwill with respect to replacing the transmissions. my concern is that honda replaced my transmission in 2005 with a rebuilt, unmodified (not redesigned) transmission. i have read on internet forums that numerous buyers of this vehicle have had 2,3 even 4 replacements. what is being done by nhtsa to address this problem? what is nhtsa doing to hold honda accountable for just replacing failed units with rebuilt, defective transmissions instead of replacing failed transmissions with new, redesigned units?

I own a 2001 honda odyssey. i had transmission problems in 2006 that ended in the dealership replacing the transmission. i had 53,000 miles on it. last week (1/3/11), the 2nd transmission failed. i was driving home from work accelerating up a hill when i lost all forward gears. i pulled over to the side of the road and placed the vehicle in park. all of my forward gears were gone. i was able to drive thr remainder of the way in reverse. i have 95,000 on the vehicle. american honda corporation will take no responsibility for the problem. i feel the vehicle could have caused a major wreck if i had been attempting a merge onto the highway. i am very upset with this and want nhtsa to take action against honda. the class action lawsuit of 2006 did not fix the problem.

2001 honda odyssey. consumer states problem with transmission *tgw the consumer stated according to the honda owner link website there is an automatic transmission recall for the odyssey minivans. when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and mentioned the recall, they didn't respond. they just diagnosed the problems as a slipping transmission, a new ecu was needed, the front and rear mounts were broken and the right front and left rear struts needed to be replaced. the consumer took the vehicle to an independent shop and they concluded the transmission was indeed failing. the recommendation was replacement or a complete overhaul. *jb

The transmission on my 2001 honda odyssey started to fail. on one drive, i noticed it slipping a little. on the next day, the next time i drove the vehicle, it almost totally went out on me. i was trying to enter into a major mile street, pushed on the accelerator, with only a slight response from the transmission. one car had to swerve to avoid me, but there was no accident. upon researching this, i've discovered that the 2001 honda odyssey has a big history of transmission problems. there was even a class action lawsuit settled which extended the warranty to 109,000 miles. unfortunately, my vehicle has 121,000 miles. i am an original owner and was never notified by honda that there was an issue with this vehicle. i have no idea why this hasn't been recalled, it's a huge safety issue. american honda says there is nothing they can do for me, that i will have to pay the full price the dealership is asking to replace the transmission.

Second 2001 honda odyssey transmission failure. 1) driving to pick up husband at denver airport. no unusual driving situations. 2) 1st transmission failed at 120000 miles; rebuilt transmission failed at 168000 miles. 3) replaced first transmission with rebuilt one. honda knows that the odyssey transmission fails. they are asking for $5000 to replace it. we cannot buy a new transmission; only rebuilt transmissions. with honda only providing rebuilt transmissions, they are guaranteeing that we will have to replace the transmission every 3-4 years. always just out of the warranty period.

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. while driving 40 mph the automatic transmission started making noise and trying to kick in to different gears causing him to pull to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic shop where they ran a diagnostic test and informed him the transmission failed and needed to be replaced again. the transmission was replaced previously at mileage 107,000 in september 2008 which the dealer covered majority of the cost. the transmission keeps failing at every 45,000 mileage. this was the third time the transmission fail. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic shop for repairs. the manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance for the transmission this time. the failure mileage was 215,000....mw

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. he attempted to accelerate from a stop but the vehicle would only travel at 2 mph momentarily before it jerked into gear and began accelerating further. during the failure the check engine and traction control system lights began illuminating on the dashboard. the vehicle was stopped and shut off. upon restart the vehicle operated as normal. the failure continued to recur intermittently so the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he was informed this was a common failure and the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified and they also informed him this was a known failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 138,000. the vin was unavailable. sm.

My 2001 honda odyssey transmission failed at 87000 miles lynnwood honda dealer sold and installed a rebuilt transmission for $3600. the rebuilt transmission failed in less than a year at 37000 miles. i believe they installed a faulty transmission. honda says they won't assist me. results: i lost $3600 dollars on the repair. plus i have a van worth $7000(kbb) that doesn't work. total loss $11000.

Transmission slippage during shift from first to second gear when accelerating from a complete stop, as if the vehicle cannot gain traction. rolling backward at an incline from a complete stop, when the accelerator is pressed. engine speeds up, transmission does not immediately shift, and when it does finally engage the shift is extremely rough, with a noticeable loss of acceleration/power. obdii code indicates a p0740 (tcc enable solenoid circuit electrical) problem, and the transmission now needs to be replaced at 119,344 miles. i've discovered that american honda is aware of this particular defect, and have issued several extended warranties pertaining to transmission failures in 1999-2002 honda odysseys, yet they have never issued a recall to correct the ongoing problem.

2001 honda odyssey. transmission defective. again. the original was replaced by honda under extended warranty around 60,000 miles (approximately 4 years ago). second transmission failed the other day with less than 40,000 miles on it. clearly, honda did not replace the transmission the first time with a transmission that corrected the design flaw. rather, they installed a rebuilt transmission with the same design flaw. honda was fully aware at the time they faced a design flaw - but installed a flawed transmission anyhow. this was done most likely knowing that these transmissions would on average make it at least through the warranty period and become the owners problem afterwards. i, personally, consider such behavior potentially fraudulent. that is, installing something that known to be defective and subject to early failure relative to what the expected lifespan of the system is as measured against the norm and within statistical reason. i am aware of the class action lawsuit and outcome (minor extension of warranty). i am filing this complaint simply for record and out of disappointment for honda's actions.

When i would go to pass and push down on the gas the engine would rev up and it would take 2 or 3 seconds to kick in to passing gear. i took it to them and they said nothing was wrong. now the engine light has come on and the code says i need a new transmission. i told them that it wasn't right within the first year i had it. i took it to them twice and they said nothing was wrong. i changed the transmission fluid every 15000 miles and it still happened. i went to honda after the light came on and since it is out of warranty they denied my claim. the only reason it took this long to go bad was because i serviced it regularly. the best part was when i took it to them after the transmission light has gone on they did not have any record of me bringing my van for this problem. what a coincidence.

2001 honda odyssey downshifts unexpectantly. as i was traveling down the highway, the honda downshifted sharply and then i felt like i was driving in neutral. i tried to get off the highway carefully without being able to accelerate. i had several cars almost hit me because i could not accelerate and dropped speed quickly . i drove to a mechanic and he said my transmission was blown. i called honda and they did have a recall on this issue, but they told me that i would not be covered because it had to be under 109,000 miles. honda has known about this problem all along and have had class action law suits against them regarding this very same issue. they will do nothing. i feel that this is a safety issue for honda owners and this company is just waiting for someone to die.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) honda odyssey 2001 vin [xxx] days ago i was driving on the 3rd line of a busy highway when i felt my rpms going very high and my car was slowing down, i didn't know what was happening !!; even that the van was accelerated it was not moving. i had to put my emergency lights and find my way out to the side line. i will tell you it is very scary to start loosing power and having others cars full speed behind you. lucky me i didn't cause an accident and nobody was hurt. when i started looking at prices and information, in the internet i found out that honda knows about the problem and they even lost a legal battle in 2006 for the same reasons. they know that this 2001 honda odyssey falls into the bad batch. at that time they extended the warranty to 109,000 and 93 months. my van has 102,000 miles but is out of the 93 months. my question to honda and to nhtsa, if you know that there is a problem, also you should agree that this problem could cause some accidents, why wait until somebody has an accident and dies. why was there never a recall? today i called the dealer and they offered me a deal, from 4k to $3,000 (oh! what a deal- i could buy another 2001 van for just a little more). i called an independent auto repair and they will charge me $2,200 to repair the transmission, so where is the real deal from honda?. another question, can we sue honda again for not fixing the problem which they already recognized they had a problem back in 2006 but didn't do a recall. even if i fix my transmission i have been reading that people have had to change their transmission 3 times in 100,000 miles. from where are we supposed to get the money? where is the government to enforce and control this kind of abuse? *tr

2001 honda odyssey, 139,000 miles - check engine light and tcs light came on and transmission was slipping. technician said transmission was bad and needed to be replaced. not covered under warranty. van accelerated whiled applying brakes and trying to turn. hard shifts. slow shifts. very dangerous at intersections because van sometimes does not accelerate while trying to turn. research into problem reveales honda knows there is a problem with the transmissions in these vans but refuses to do anything about it. we transport 3 children in our van. appears to be a very dangerous situation. it's time for something to be done. will it take someone being killed in a honda odyssey - with known transmission problems - before anything is done about it. it's time to step in and hold honda responsible before the unthinkable happens. they will not listen to individual owners. we need your help. please.

Brought my 2001 honda odyssey ex to my local midas shop to have a scan performed because of an error message. i was told that the code came back showing that there is a transmission defect in the car. i have since found out that there have been wide spread transmission defects on my car's model year. so much so that honda felt pressured to lengthen the warranty of the transmission coverage. it turns out that my car was well within to allotted miles to be covered by the warranty, but was 9 months beyond.

Over the past two years we have noticed that the automatic transmission in our 2001 honda odyssey would shift abruptly. it was suggested that we have the old transmission fluid flushed out and replaced with new fluid and we had that work done by the honda dealer from which we bought the car when it was new. about three months ago we were driving the car and the transmission ?locked? in high gear at about 60 mph on a divided highway. we could not get the transmission to downshift and the car would not slow down; it was a dangerous situation. we finally had to press on the brakes with a lot of force and the car finally slowed down, stopped and downshifted to a lower gear. this now occurs about once a week. we called the dealer and they told us that the transmission was failing and would most likely need to be replaced at our expense. a search of the internet revealed hundreds of cases of odyssey owners having this same problem and having to have the transmission replaced even though the cars had low mileage. we also found that honda had agreed to replace the transmissions at no charge as the result of a class action lawsuit. we took the car to the dealer to have the transmission checked. the diagnosis was that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost to us of $3500. this malfunction creates a dangerous, potentially life-threatening situation for drivers of honda odysseys. honda has admitted this is a design flaw in the car and yet they will not accept any responsibility to remedy the problem. *tr

2001 honda odyssey minivans problem: defective transmissions transmissions typically self-destruct between 75,000 and 130,000 miles. honda lost a class action lawsuit relating to this issue. when this problem occurs, the transmission shifts harshly and sounds horrible. d4 indicator light blinks as well as the check engine light comes on. the class action lawsuit resulted in honda extending the drivetrain warranty to 100,000 miles. unfortunately, most transmissions breakdown shortly after that mileage and honda typically does not help out after that period. after googling honda odyssey transmission problems, i was shocked to find out that there are thousands of customers suffering from the same problems that i have, and honda will not help out. in fact, their customer service representatives are noted as being trained to act like robots and belittle the customer when it comes to offering assistance. i feel that honda should replace these defective transmissions for no cost to the customer. i believe transmissions should last well over 100,000 miles. my transmission has completely failed at 119,000 miles. i did have it at the local dealer complaining of transmission problems at around 94,000 miles, but they said nothing was wrong and suggested i have the transmission fluid changed. i went along with their suggestion and had it changed. this corrected the problem for a short time; unfortunately the problems returned and then the transmission eventually failed. upon reviewing forums on the internet relating to honda transmission problems, i believe honda is blowing off odyssey owners with this problem. there is a major safety concern. the autos can breakdown during travel risking an accident. it can leave drivers and passengers stranded. honda needs to offer complete replacements of these transmissions without cost to customers. they produced a bad batch of transmission over a period of years beginning in year 2000. please investigate. thank you. *tr

I have a 2001 honda odyssey. in may/june 2009i noticed that there was some fluid leaking near the undercarriage -this was noticed right after a dealer servicing where they changed a lot of fluids in the vehicle. i called the dealer, he took a look and determined it was a transmission oil leak. he estimated that it would cost me up to $4000 to fix this problem and advised me to keep the fluid topped off and that would take care of the issue. on 01-21-2010, my van did not start even though the battery was working. i had it jump started. to prevent further such issues, i took the van to aamco to get the transmission oil leak examined. they determined that it was from the inside the transmission box and that it would take$600 to open the transmission and fix the issue. when they opened the transmission they discovered the transmission block and transmission had some issues and determined that the transmission needed replacement/ or needed to be rebuilt. they provided an estimate of $2300. i looked up the honda website and discovered that this was an issue with honda odyssey vans of my model year and honda extended the warranty on the transmission for these vans to 7 years and 9 months. i had never received any mailing to this effect from honda and this was new information to me. i called honda and they explained that they could not do anything as the warranty had expired - they want me to take the vehicle to a honda dealer to get the transmission examined - they will consider my claim at that time. there is no guarantee i will get any reimbursement from them. the cost of the examination at the dealer would be out of my pocket in addition to the $600 i have already paid to aamco. question is: honda knows there is a defective transmission in this model year, why are they not replacing it? the way they have dealt with this issue - forces me to back on the road with this van with a risk of it stalling or having other transmission problems on the road. *tr

Bought a 2001 honda odyssey feb '01. transmission replaced @99,729 miles, w/rebuilt transmission, because of strange noises when gears changed. on 11/24/09, approx 7:30pm, traveling on i-695 near baltimore md, we experienced total transmission failure. ten minutes earlier traction control system (tcs) & check engine lights came on simultaneously. the rpms began to increase dramatically; transmission stopped working, we glided about 10 feet to the side of the road, and stopped. van was immobilized. smell of burnt transmission fluid filled the van. had we not been in right travel lane, the sudden stop could have been catastrophic. vehicle towed by aaa to brown's honda service, glen burnie md. this van had about 156,532 miles on it, meaning the rebuilt transmission lasted only 52,803 miles. *tr

I have 2001 honda odyssey that i have maintained very well. i have had no issues with it over the years. last week, i was returning home from a local walmart when the traction control (tcs) light turned on and refused to go off for about 2 minutes. when it finally did, the check engine light turned on. i took it to my honda dealership this week. they called to tell me that my transmission was gone. i learned from the internet that there was class action lawsuit for honda odysseys made between 1999-2002 and honda had extended the warranty to 93 months or 109,000 miles whichever occurred first. unfortunately my vehicle was bought in november of 2000, so i do not qualify. i was told by the dealership that honda agreed to pay half for the repairs which still left me with $2200 to pay. this is unacceptable. honda knows this is an issue with their odyssseys and the least they should do is cover all the defective vehicles and offer a recall. i have a vehicle that i took great care of and now in 9 years and only 82,000 miles ended up paying more than 2k for no fault of mine. i am never going to buy a honda again. i urge you guys to take strict action against honda.

*tr

I am the original owner of 2001 honda odyssey. my car has 86,353 miles on it. the check engine light is on and the code is p0740. the dealer is telling me that the transmission need to be replaced, which would cost me about $3,900. i purchased the car in sep 2000 from the same dealer and all maintenance services were performed according to the dealer/honda schedule. i took good care of this car. this is very upsetting. when i researched the problem, i came to know that honda was aware of this problem. i never got a letter from either dealer or honda regarding this. this is irresponsibility. can you please advise what i should do? i see that there are numerous similar complaints. *tr

2001 honda odyssey lx with about 94000 miles was purchased used by current owners with about 22,000 miles. transmission was replaced by honda at 47191 (apr 21, 2005) after much complaints by owner to dealers and regular mechanic. owner was even told to flush engine at a cost of $70.48. on june 11, 2009, odyssey was checked out for road trip by regular mechanic (oil changed, filters replaced, brakes shoes replaced, and rear wheel cyls replaced) however transmission failed on road trip leaving 6 stranded in ca desert outside of barstow. car was then towed to regular mechanic for review and repair. over the years this car has received regular service from mechanic and transmission was serviced at 67851 miles by regular mechanic (not honda dealer). honda has denied claim for transmission replacement due to service by non honda dealer and they are requesting proof that generic term qt synthetic atf which was used by mechanic (as noted on mechanics invoice for service dated 3/19/2007) was purchased from honda dealership and was actually a honda part. mechanic has regular relationship with honda dealer and suppliers and continues to use honda parts for honda cars (toyota parts for toyota cars, etc). during owner's discussion with honda, they asked for additional clarification regarding atf honda part. owner spoke with mechanic regarding this. mechanic went back to clarify original 3/19/2007 receipt and added phrase honda atf-z1 and reprinted receipt with print date: 6/23/2009 showing work completed date: 3/19/2007. honda used this correction to deny all claim and said the mechanic altered the invoice. this vehicle requires it's third transmission before 94,000 miles. owner feels this is unacceptable especially when honda is aware of transmission problems during these years. transmissions should last at least 100,000. tires last 50,000 - 75,000 miles, why shouldn't a transmission. *tr

I purchased a 2001 honda odyssey and shortly after buying it the transmission started having difficulty upshifting!i tried returning it but the honda dealer that originally serviced the car said that it needed a transmission and that it was out of warranty! the car is dangerous! i drive to the store in it and at each stop sign when i accelerate! the car suddenly screeches forward and engages after revving up to 4000rpm this causes the traction control system to brake the wheels making it dangerous and unpredictable! the honda dealer keeps telling me that it is out of warranty however this is one of the vehicles that were included in the class action of 2006 with attn jared stamell! honda has made a very dangerous car and they should be made to take these models off the road! i have not been able to have honda repair this 2001 odyssey auto transmission and it has caused me a financial hardship being stuck with a potentially dangerous vehicle that they do not wish to take responsibility for the repairs that they admit it needs! this honda company has a very non responsive customer service and people have even posted that these vehicles have killed people!every single time that i drive the honda odyssey the transmission acts up and doesn't shift right! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 honda odyssey. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle felt as if it would hesitate. the engine did not rev and the vehicle was not accelerating properly. the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that there was an issue with the solenoid switch, which caused the transmission to fail and possibly lock up completely. through research, the contact discovered that this was a very common issue with this type of vehicle. the contact believes that a recall should be issued. the manufacturer has not been notified. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 58,000.

Honda 2001 odyssey mini-van transmission failure - happened while driving the van would not move with the engine accelerating but no movement. honda has a chronic transmission problem that has been litigated with a settlement in dec 2006 to a class action lawsuit against honda. honda extended the transmission warranty by 9 months !! the fact is that honda sold a defective product and it should be recalled - all the defective transmissions should be replace by honda as part of the recall. *tr

I have a 2001 honda odyssey that had a transmission replaced in nov 2006 by local honda dealer here in northern italy. the transmission only lasted 2 years, 2 months and 32k miles. the 2001 odysseys were given an extended warranty which covered the first one, but i'm being told i'm outside the warranty, so the next transmission isn't covered. as of today, the odyssey engine is fine but the transmission won't engage in any gear. it's hard-broke. my chief complaint is honda not replacing the new transmission that only lasted 2 years. *tr

In sept 2002 we purchased a used 2001 honda odyssey with 12,500 miles from a dealer in grand rapids michigan. in may 2008, with about 78,000 miles on it (and a vehicle inspection before our trip)on an extended trip our check engine light and 'tcs' light came on. we drove it back home. after that we would notice after extended driving time there would be shifting issues. we then took it to the dealer, who told us we needed a new transmission, approx $3000. after doing some research online, we found out rather quickly that the transmission problems had been a well documented issue with the 2001 odyssey and that not until after a class action lawsuit, honda agreed to extend the warranty on the transmission. we had never been contacted about the transmission issue. we then found out because our vehicle, which had originally been titled in canada, before we purchased it, was not covered under this recall. we contacted honda america & was told there was nothing they could do for us. the dealer where we purchased the vehicle will not return our calls. this is a total safety issue - honda is not standing behind its product. we feel that honda should have to replace this transmission - they built it originally - it should not matter where the vehicle was originally titled. can you help us?*tr

The check engine light came on (a $1,500 repair) for the catalytic converter replacement and the transmission had to be replaced (at 93k). apparently these are both increasingly common problems in this model. it's hard to believe that my van carries the honda name. then i started googling and found many sites reporting the same horror stories here i realized that many of these vehicles were manufactured with faulty parts and may be a lemons as well? the prospect to paying $100 every time the check engine light turns on is not a pleasant one. vehicles built today should not require transmissions & emission converter at a mere 93,000 miles. i have been very disappointed with the reliability of my honda odyssey. the brand is considered highly reputable and has a price premium (and supposedly a resale value) to match - but my experience with the odyssey has been one of repeated mechanical break downs and poor performance as many owner have written and blogged. i feel helpless and know honda is powerful corporation who will do nothing ... we need your help to protect consumers of these practices. thank you for your time. *tr

We own a 2001 honda odyssey mini-van which we purchased new in april 2001. we have been having problems with the gears shifting and took the vehicle to the dealer on a number of occasions only to be told there is no issue. finally, when the check engine light went on, the dealer conceded that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle has 77,000 miles and was still under the extended transmission warranty. however, the dealer than told us that the engine mounts need to be replaced as well. in reading the strings on the nhtsa odi website, it looks like this is a problem that exists across the 2001 models. i would recommend that honda and nhtsa began a recall of these vehicles and/or extend the warranty on the engine mounts and the transmission to 100k or 10 years. *tr

Failed transmission in 2001 honda odyssey. we drove from starkville, ms to our families homes in ocean springs, ms for christmas. we got about 45 minutes from our home when we came to a stop light. after we stopped we tried to accelerate and the car shifted very hard. it shifted hard every time it changed gears. we made it down to our families for christmas. on our return trip home we experienced the same problem. when we attempted to turn left to cross the hwy. on to the on-ramp the car would not down-shift out of 4th gear. the van struggled across the highway. it took us about 30 seconds to get across the 2 lanes of traffic. my husband contacted the local dealer and they referred him to american honda. he told them about the problem. they told him they could not repair it because it was no longer under warranty. we continued to drive it as it is our only vehicle. the problem wasn't too bad when the weather was cold but as soon as it would get warm it would shift hard again. it finally gave out on our way home one day in march, 2008. it would shift hard and then hang up like the gears wouldn't lock in. it was terrifying to drive. we took it to a transmission specialist and were told it would cost $3,000 to fix. we kept the maintenance up on this vehicle and took very good care of it. *tr

Traveling down i-75 near marietta georgia, traffic came to a near stop as tornado producing storm entered the area. the check engine and tcs light came on prior to the failure. the vehicle has 130,000 miles on it, but has been well maintained. when attempting to re-accelerate, the engine rpm's increased rapidly but the transmission did not immediately engage. when the transmission did finally engage, the van lurched forward with a very unhealthly sounding mechanical clunk. after exiting the highway, the transmission continued to delay engaging making it very difficult to seek cover from the storm. as the tornado sirens wailed and the hail starting coming down, my family and i found ourselves essentially stranded 8 hours from home in the midst of very severe and dangerous weather. i am the original owner of the 2001 odyssey and purchased it specifically for honda's purported reliability. it appears that honda has known for years that this transmission is prone to failure. at a minimum, honda should have notified all owners so that they could act accordingly - instead honda allowed owners to unwittingly place their loved ones in danger. i'm a long time honda proponent and i'm enraged that they would act with such negligence! not only are they responsible for endangering, but they disrupted our vacation, cost us a cab trip to the atlanta airport piled with bags for seven people as well as a week's car rental charge. after pressing honda, they agreed to pay for half of the transmission cost but no labor. *tr

I have a 2001 honda odyssey ex, i am currently having the same transmission problems everyone else is having. my check engine light is on and i have a erratic shifting between gears during driving. when the vehicle is cold and i shift into reverse gear it causes a real hard banging jerk in the transmission. i spoke to the honda service dept and they acted like it was an engine mount (which i immediately changed at a cost of $100.00 for the part). i also went ahead and changed the transmission mounts as well (another $40.00 for parts). this was not the problem and i now discover they knew it by reading online complaints about this model of vehicle. i was notified of the warranty extension but my vehicle had already passed the warranty mileage extension. i think there should not be a mileage placed on the warranty.....it is obvious, this vehicle has a design flaw when it comes to the automatic transmission. honda of america should replace my transmission free of charge. i bought this vehicle used from a honda dealer and it was supposed to be certified. i don't know how many transmissions it has had. the vehicle has been well maintained with the transmission fluid being changed as directed every 30,000 miles with honda atf fluid since i have owned it. *tr

I own a 2001 honda odyssey. the first transmission was replaced with a remanufactured transmission at 86k miles. it was replaced free of charge under the extended warranty. the new transmission was guaranteed for 1 yr or 12k miles. i communicated my frustration with the warranty of 100k on the first transmission and only 12k on the new/improved one? when i spoke to honda central customer service i was given the broken record about the 1 yr/12k mile free replacement. i still attempted to communicate that it is not fair to assure this customer that the new transmission was guaranteed for one year and i wanted to speak to their supervisor. i was told that the buck stopped here and there was no higher customer service representative. at the time, i was frustrated but had nowhere to turn. the dealer gave me the honda central customer service rep and the central rep pretty much shut me down. little did i know at the time that my new/improved remanufactured transmission would in 35k miles go out again. the tcs light comes on intermittently and the check engine light has been on for awhile with the egr code and the 1559 code showing. i see there is an ongoing theme based on previous complaints. this is the same thing. the van rolls when i am on an incline without my foot on the brake. please do something, i cannot afford a 5k replacement and cannot risk driving this vehicle any longer. my wife is using the vehicle to transport kids in her children's services job and i would hate to see something happen as a result of negligence on the part of the manufacturer. *nm

At 83,000 miles the second transmission on my 2001 honda odyssey failed (registered in my wife's name, lynn roessler). original transmission failed at 43,000 miles in 2003 and was replaced by honda under warranty. in july 2005 the second transmission began to slip, check engine light came on, d4 light began to blink, tcs light came on. returned call to honda dealer, who again replaced transmission and left inboard joint. i do not know if i have now have a new or rebuilt transmission. i am concerned that the two transmissions i have had so far have lasted, on average, about 41,000 miles.

I have a 2001 honda odyssey ex minivan. when at a stop, facing uphill in drive, the vehicle will roll backwards as soon as you take your foot off the brake. it rolls as if it were a vehicle with a manual transmission, or as if you were in neutral. parked facing downhill, than starting in reverse (backing up the hill) the same problem presents itself, but it is even worse. this has led to several near accidents as we have adjusted to this unusual situation, as all automatic transmission automobiles we have owned in the past doi not behave in this manner. they hold on hills, at least momentarily, when the brake is released and the automobile is in drive. i wonder how many accidents this defect has caused while the drivers discioverd this flaw and adjusted their driving habits (it's a lot like driving a manual transmission). i contacted my local honda dealer, and they said this is normal with these vans and accord automobiles.

At approximately 38,000 miles my transmission on my 2001 honda odyssey failed. this repair was covered by an extension of the basic warranty of 36,000 miles as honda is aware that the transmission that they originally installed was defective. the replacement transmission has now failed at 67,000 miles and was also replaced by honda. my concern is that the transmission has not been replaced with anything but the same faulty transmission. i requested honda to extend the new transmission's warranty period to 100,000 miles from the time of replacement but was refused my request. i believe that they are aware that the problem has not been remedied and are installing defective parts in mine and other vehicles. i would request that the nhtsa look into others (as there are many) replaced transmissions and find out if my experience is unique or part of a trend. i can be contacted to supply evidence that the vehicle was maintained properly and this failure was not related to failure to follow guidelines of the manufacturer. *jb

The transmissionis failing on my 3-year-old honda odyssey at 65,500 miles. honda admits they have a problem. the transmission needs to be replaced and they will not do it under warranty because they say the vehicle is a gray market car. it was produced in canada like all other 2001 odyssey's and imported to the usa one-year-old with 18,000 miles. i bought it used. honda says they won't cover it under their newly announced extended warranty on defective transmissions because it was intended to be driven in canada. i did not realize that canadian roads were so different from those in minnesota. i asked if that meant that they were implying that i did something illegal. they said oh no, but brokers bring these cars in from canada because there is a shortage in the usa and the prices are less in canada. somehow it is my fault that honda usa price fixing creates a gray market? does the vehicle not say honda all over it? was it not made on the same line in the same plant with the same parts as all of the other 2001 odyssey's? is corporate divisional infighting putting me the consumer in the middle? they make a defective tranny and now they won't stand behind it. honda had a sterling reputation until this transmission issue started to surface. a qualified transmission shop researched the problem and told me it is a saftey hazzard and could lock-up at highway speeds causing a catastrophic failure. do they really think if someone is killed by this they won't be held responsible in court? they should be ashamed of themselves. there is no excuse for poor product quality. they are trying to get me to go away and leave me high and dry with a $5,000 fix-it bill (dealer quote) on a 3-year-old vehicle i paid big bucks for. seems fraudulent to me! this is a disaster in the making and must be stopped before an innocent life is lost.*ak

Honda is not honoring the extended warranty that they have on the transmissions of the 2001 honda odyssey. i purchased a honda recently and it turns out the seller did not disclose that the transmission is going out. i found out 5 days after bringing it home from a honda dealer. i also found out honda has an extended warranty on this but will not cover it because the car came from canada which was also not disclosed. both honda us and honda canada have extended warranties on this but will not cover it because it is a canadian honda (although it was sold by a us dealer in the us to the party i bought it from) and because i am a us citizen. i read an article in usa today that said honda had so many complaints on their transmissions that were extending the warranty on this year of honda odyssey and other vehicles they make to 100,00 miles or 7 years due to consumer complaints made to the nhtsa because nhtsa was getting ready to issue a recall. honda has refused to honor the warranty on the honda i purchased and it only has 40,000 miles on it and is a 2001. i did not know anything about as honda terms gray market cars. as far as i am concerned most of the honda's are made in canada that come into the pacific northwest , some are alloted for canada and some for the us as i have found out. but me as the average consumer knew nothing about this and honda does not want to honor this extended warranty because of that. honda made this automobile, they are having problems with the transmissions. they have extended warranties on it in both countries. this is a safety issue, i am scared to drive this vehicle now as i do not want to risk my childrens safety or mine if the transmission should fail completely, say on the freeway. honda knows of the problem and has an extended warranty on this and has refused to honor the warranty on this vehicle . can you please help me?*ak

Second transmission failure. two months ago, had unexpected down shift from 4th to 2nd on highway (luckily devoid of traffic). honda repaired transmission by replacing solenoid switch, not replacing transmission. again, while driving (this time accelerating) transmission slipped, unexpectedly allowing no power to drive wheels during acceleration. luckily was on a deserted road, no other traffic. if i was pulling out into highway (as we have to do to leave our neighborhood) results could have been catastrophic, as unexpected inability to accelerate/move into traffic flow would most cause trucks barelling down hill to hit us. lucky this happened 2 minutes and 1/4 mile earlier than that. others may not be so lucky. dt

The transmission does not hold the position of the vehicle. for example, if i shift into drive, the car can drift backward, requiring i use the brakes and the gas at the same time to avoid hitting something behind me. the transmission also does not slow the car on hills. if i am in d1, the car will fly down a hill as if it is not in any gear. the honda dealer insists this is normal. i do not know if it is acceptable for your safety standards but it is difficult for me to drive on mountain roads without wearing the breaks out, and is a safety hazard for me.

With vehicle stopped (as at a stop sign or at a red light), when accelerator is depressed, engine revs up but vehichle hesistates. then ,transmission engages suddenly and vehichle lurches forward. the intensity was anywhere from a moderate bump, to enough to cause the tires to squeal and loose traction. this happened several times before we got the vehichle to the dealer for service; we just began to describe the problem when they said it would need a new transmission, as if they had seen the problem many times before. when questioned they denied there was a problem with odyssey transmissions, although they did say that their odyssey shuttlevan (same yr/model) had the transmission replaced the prior week. while conducting a search on the internet, we found dozens of instances of odyssey transmission failures, all with replacement of the entire transmission as the remedy. while in our case this was done under warranty at no charge, we are concerned that this is a systemic problem that can easily lead to a traffic accident. *ak
