Defect SummaryHonda is recalling certain model year 2003 and 2004 pilot and odyssey and 2003 through 2006 acura mdx passenger vehicles manufactured from november 26, 2001, through august 30, 2006. the interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
Consequence SummaryRemoval of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryHonda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a honda or acura dealer. the dealer will install an updated shift interlock lever and, if necessary, replace any necessary part of the ignition switch, free of charge. the recall began on february 22, 2013. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

 On december 10, 2012, honda motor company submitted a defect information report to nhtsa regarding ignition interlocks in approximately 576,117 model year my) 2003 through 2004 honda pilot and odyssey vehicles that are the subject of this investigation and 231,044 my 2003 through 2006 acura mdx vehicles (recall no. 12v-573).honda's report states that a design change to the ignition switch used in the recalled vehicles reduced the range of rotation for the ignition switch from 160 degrees in earlier designs to 125 degrees without a corresponding change to the ignition interlock blocking mechanism.the result was that excessive rotational force could damage a lever that would allow the driver to remove the ignition key that was in a position other than the park position, which may allow the vehicle to roll away.odi identified 176 complaints related to the alleged defect, including 48 roll away crashes.threeof the incidents resulted in the following injuries to pedestrians:1) a broken foot and torn achilles tendon; 2) a fractured fibula and crush injuries to a shin area; and 3) an incident requiring unspecified treatment at a hospital emergency room.this investigation is closed.the voqs associated with this investigation are: 10486515, 10486393, 10486100, 10485010, 10482229, 10482091, 10481169, 10481105, 10481079, 10481027, 10480804, 10480648, 10480099, 10480009, 10479934, 10479695, 10479561, 10479517, 10479494, 10479484, 10479437, 10479421, 10479409, 10479343, 10478916, 10478876, 10478857, 10478845, 10478784, 10478776, 10478720, 10476767, 10473167, 10465590, 10463995, 10457825, 10452596, 10451185, 10448593, 10446962, 10440841, 10440040, 10439061, 10439033, 10438611, 10425909, 10403299, 10397920, 10395833, 10395298, 10379673, 10374724, 10365751, 10363501, 10361325, 10358480, 10355331, 10354680, 10354669, 10354390, 10353281, 10351899, 10351489, 10351240, 10349716, 10349612, 10348987, 10348955, 10348725, 10348579, 10348564, 10348429, 10348389, 10348268, 10348254, 10331474, 10325334, 10276072, 10179464.

The mechanism that locks the key in the ignition until the vehicles is shifted into park fails and needs to be addressed by honda.the key can be removed without shifting into park. this could cause the vehicles to roll off unexpectedly and hurt an innocent bystander or roll off into an intersection. this issue needs to be addressed immediately and honda needs to address this key- ignition issue. although i haven't suffered any accident i always try to remember to keep my car in park before removing the key. i have heard from several people this is a common issue with this model year for both the odyssey and the pilot. *tr

I can take my key out of the ignition while in drive. because of the setup of the shifter, and the short space between gears, it's not apparent that the car's not in park, and fairly common for me to remove the key while in drive. i've not had this problem with other cars. several times i've taken the key out and the car started rolling a little before i stepped on the brake and put the key back in and shifted to park. about 4 or 5 weeks ago i parked at a strip mall in front of a store, and when i came back out my car was backed up against the car on the other side of the aisle, having rolled back about 15 feet. fortunately there was no damage. another time my wife went shopping and came out and the car had been in drive the whole time (about an hour) but fortunately the parking lot was flat. *tr

I parked my van on my sloped driveway, setting the emergency brake. as i was getting out, the van started rolling backward. as i was trying to stop it, i tripped and my left leg was run over by the front left tire. i had an open fracture of my fibula and crush injuries on my shin area (and multiple bruises and pulled muscles elsewhere). i realized later that the van was still in drive. i had been able to get my keys out without putting it in park. [i have tested it since then and i still can remove my keys while the van is in drive or neutral] on testing the emergency brake, i found that it would not hold unless it was pushed all the way to the maximum position. even though it sounded and felt engaged, it did not hold.

While i was driving my engine light came on and soon after my tcs light came on. i was on the highway and when i slowed down to get off on an exit and tried to go up in gear my van stalled and would not go past 25 to 30 mph. i took it to an auto place to check the engine light and these codes came up p0740 torque converter clutch circuit malfunction and p0730 incorrect gear ratio. *tr

Transmission failed while traveling 40mph at 130000 miles. it was replaced. there was a class action lawsuit regarding 2003 transmissions, but the window had closed, so i had to pay for it fully. november 20, 2011, while driving 45mph, dash lights flash, radio loses power. when i turn the ignition off, the car is dead. restarts almost immediately, after lots of clicking in the dash. at varying speeds the dash lights will flash, and the clock and radio go dead briefly. sometimes the door lock and the sliding door buttons don't work, but if i wait 2 minutes, i hear the clicking in the dash, and suddenly there is power. left it at the dealership to be checked out over 4 days, and they say nothing is wrong. to be traveling at 40+ and have the car go dead is a hazard to me and my family, as well as everyone else driving while i am driving. it is currently at another shop to be evaluated.

The vehicle (2003 honda odyssey) has progressively been experiencing what i'll deem electrical issues that seem to be severely impacting the automatic sliding doors on the vehicle causing them to open while driving, not open when using the handle or button. specifically, the automatic sliding doors will not open, will not close or partially close without fully latching. this happens regardless of using the manual door handle or the button located on the dashboard. more importantly, the automatic doors have opened while driving the vehicle with children in the back of the vehicle creating an extremely dangerous and potentially deadly situation. this has occurred approximately 6-10 times over the past year and seems to be getting more frequent. it's happened while driving on the highway, on side streets and during normal operation of the vehicle. in addition, there seems to be an issue with the electrical system that is constantly drawing a small charge from the battery keeping it in a weakened state.

The top bracket holding the alternator to the engine block failed again for the third time while my wife was driving the van. as a result of the failure of the top bracket, the stress on the main serpentine belt caused the bolt holding the alternator in place to snap off at the engine block. this caused the alternator to become loose and caused a burning smell to come into the cabin of the vehicle. the alternator loose and un-attached poses a potential catastrophic failure with the pully system and the power steering which may cause an accident. i reported the previous incident of the same problem on october 25th, 2010. my concern is that this is a recurring problem that honda is aware of and not correcting with a recall and addition of a re engineered and strengthened top alternator bracket. i am also very concerned that failure of this part/system while my wife and children are driving the van will cause an accident and injury or death to my family. i have called honda and their solution or recommendation is to replace the part and use proper torque specifications. this has not worked 2 times so far and my mechanic tried to weld and additional piece of metal to the oem bracket to make the bracket stronger, and this did not work.

Top alternator mounting bracket failed for the second time in one month. on first failure at night, headlights became very dim while vehicle was operating causing danger to occupants and other motorists. on second failure vehicle was close to home and no immediate hazard to driver or other motorists. research shows this is a known component failure to honda and nhtsb.

2003 honda odyssey ignition switch: we can remove the key without putting the vehicle in park problem has existed for at least 1 year. vehicle does not appear to be covered by a recall for this problem (per honda recall lookup by vin), but npr reports that honda has recalled some 1.4 million vehicles for this problem, including minivans (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyid=129085652 ) it seems likely that our vehicle model & year should be included in the recall, but is not.

Car will not start. ignition switch remains locked. my 2003 honda odyssey will no longer start. prior to this, i went to honda service to complain about the frequent incidents of my ignition switch failing to unlock. they said that this was due to wear and tear and i will have to spend over $500 to replace the key cylinder. are they putting substandard key cylinders? i understand that other models of honda are being recalled due to ignition switch problems. haven't they done anything to eliminate this problem with the odyssey models? *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the radio controls worked intermittently. while on vacation, the cruise control suddenly stopped working. the dealership determined this was a common problem with vehicles of the same year, make and model. the defective part also affected the proper operation of the horn assembly, the steering wheel, air bag sensor, cruise control and radio controls. the dealership replaced the cable and reel assembly. the repair only corrected the problems with the radio controls and the cruise control.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - WIRING - INTERIOR/UNDER DASH

Summary: wiring problem that could potentially cause air bag deployment when turning steering wheel. the wiring inside the cable reel assembly in the steering column of my 2003 honda odyssey came apart inside. this wiring include srs wiring as well as horn, lighting, and cruise control wiring. upon removal of this part all copper contacts to all wires were exposed and any wire could have shorted to any other wire -- this could potentially cause the steering wheel srs/air bag to be deployed while driving. contacts were constantly being tugged at whenever the steering wheel was turned. because the car has 42,000 miles and honda would not say they would pay to fix it, i repaired this myself in accordance with the honda service manual. i have pictures of the part, and have save the part in a zip-lock bag so that it can be analyzed. *jb
